Incompetent and unethical business practices. I feel the need to warn my fellow Seattlites with less the perfect eyesight. Don't let the lovely location fool you. This shop is run by incompetence. I went in as a first time customer with high hopes but mostly because it was the closest shop listen by my insurance. I need glasses to distance and, thanks to the wonderful process of aging, also to read. Unfortunately I can't tolerate the mushroomy experience that multifocal lenses provide. I made that clear to both the doctor and the technician. They still up-sold me on "this new technology" that is going to work for me. I asked what they would do if the lenses didn't work for me. They reassure me that they would make it right. After a couple of weeks I got the glasses. I couldn't even leave the shop with them. Nothing was on focus. A different tech apologized and politely re-took the ocular measures noticing that they were wrongly measured and that, to make things worse the lens shop made a mistake as well. I waited another couple of weeks for the new lenses. Much better but still off center. I used the glasses for two weeks as they recommended and I decided that I could not deal with the fishbowl effect. For me it's mostly everything is out of focus and I have to search the sweet spot constantly. I felt noseous every day. They took the glasses in and ordered regular lenses. Once I got those back, I was expecting to get a refund for the difference. Multifocal are closer to 500 dollars and single focus are more like 200. They refused to make up for the difference. They refused to discuss it with me and referred me to a manager. I called the manager 3 time before getting a text message back say they they were busy. Finally today they emailed me refusing the refund. Wait, you are too busy to call me but you have the time to write me a long email to refuse the refund? Is this something they do on a daily basis? Do they have a template for this reply? Why is the manager so busy with these tasks? She had the time to reply to my second email and the third but she didn't have the time to call me? Do they use AI for these communications? How often do they deny refunds?! Is this pure incompetence or a business strategy? Be weary of this establishment they are more skilled at denying customers then they are at making glasses. Funny that they prefer to steal a couple hundred bucks rather then acquire a new loyal customer. If you need glasses, you'll need glasses for the rest of your life. They have the opportunity to make up for their mistakes 10 fold over the years. Especially in a city like Seattle were we love supporting local businesses. Final note, they have a very limited selection of frames and most of them are outdated and out of style. I provided my own. I might have caught this place at a bad time a year ago or so. I had a bad experience stretched over a few times because of miscommunications but I don't think it was largely on me for a lot of it. The front staff was polite the whole time and the doctors too but the logistical nightmare it turned out to be made me see another place which turned out to be much better. I also think it is weird they charge a mandatory out of pocket fee for some eye test other doctors don't do and insurance doesn't cover. It was about a $100 extra I think? I paid because I was in a rush with my insurance changing but sort of feels like a money grab. I know operating a business is expensive but I wouldn't have gone if I had known ahead of time. The scheduling system didn't get my appointment through the first time and I showed up and immediately had to reschedule. The second time I went in the doctor was sick and I had to reschedule when I showed up after walking there. The third time, I had to do reschedule a contacts fitting because no one told me to bring in my old contacts when I wanted new ones. Hopefully they have improved. Straightforward pricing and better communication overall for treatment and scheduling is important. read more

Far and away the best exam I've ever had. I'm used to an arduous process and waiting for 15+ minutes before and between every step of the exam, I was shocked when I got whisked through the whole thing in 30 minutes. I had been looking for a local eye doctor that didn't require dilation for years, and I'm so glad I found Dr. Craddock! Having your pupils dilated 1. hurts, 2. ruins your productivity for the rest of the day, and 3. it's not actually necessary. With the right equipment, like the Optomap that Eyes on the City has, they can get a great view of your optic nerve, macula, retinal blood vessels, etc., with just a photo. It's even better--they can retain those photos year-to-year, and better evaluate how things are changing over time. (There is an extra cost associated with this, but it's the same additional fee--$39 with insurance--that I was accustomed to paying at a previous eye doctor; well worth it to avoid dilation, if you can afford it.) Eyes on the City also offers other modern conveniences, like online booking, and digital forms to complete prior to the appointment. They also emailed me my invoices and prescriptions after the appointment--I didn't ask for this; they just do this by default. The office itself is nice and new, and at least on a rainy November day, it was easy to find free street parking nearby. Dr. Craddock herself was great--gave me a lot of clear information about my eyes, and the contact lens and glasses options that I have. I'll definitely be back. read more

I am so impressed with this office. I brought in a prescription from work so I can only speak on the glasses I came in on Monday with a pretty good idea of what I wanted. Jeremy made a few suggestions but I really like how he wasn't pushy. They had a really great selection of brands, including hometown ones like Rain City. Ultimately I chose a pair of Tom Fords. What really impressed me was their timeliness! I just picked up my glasses. Four days! I've gotten so many glasses before where I would get the run around for 2-3 weeks about imperfections or once the frame got lost all together so this was a pleasant surprise today to get a TEXT notification they were ready. Violation of privacy & consent trumps rest of experience. While services were mostly excellent, an intake assistant asked me for my health insurance card, after I declared my visit will be out of pocket. He insisted anyway, I asked why. He said, in case something happens to you during the visit, which is peculiar non standard & thinly veiled faux guise of altruism. I gave zero consent for filing with my medical insurance which does not include opticians/OD optometrists, only MD opthalmologists. **Even if it did, I may have had personal reasons to not file with medical insurance.** I have This filing without consent is a violation of my privacy as well as likely the Privacy portion of HIPAA. The Washington Sate Insurance Commissioner, Department of health, as well as Department of Revenue will likely be informed of this violation. The palpable upselling was somewhat annoying but minor. There were also parts of the exam that were add ons which were of questionable necessity. The optometrist I was examined by was not the owner, Leslie Craddock, OD, born in 1967 license #OD00003081, with a practice in Ballard UBI #: 603-031-022, as well as Sammamish. The go-ahead-and-file-insurance-without-consent falls squarely on the responsibility of the business owner who dictates business practices for staff. These folks have figured out how to provide a whole-hearted service experience and safety with patience and understanding. The physicians and their support network answer your questions and provide help that fit my needs perfectly. They are highly communicative without being intrusive. - or too much. Their is a soft sale offered to upgrade and add additional services and products. It's not pressurized. Perfectly okay to say 'no thank you". I don't pass out many 5 star ratings. Edit: Updated my review from two to one star because of the deceptive and dismissive response from the owner. I had an eye exam and got a new prescription from Eyes on the City. I feel conflicted about my experience. I am fairly confident that my prescription is accurate, and my exam was performed well but ultimately, I left with a bad taste in my mouth. The main reason I am showing some appreciation and not giving a 1/5 is because most of the staff seemed to have good intentions. TLDR: Scheduling hiccups which resulted in some of my time wasted, somewhat confusing (or perhaps not detailed enough) instruction from the technicians resulting in tests having to be performed multiple times, resulting in me being there longer than needed. Pobodies nerfect, and that's not why I felt compelled to leave a review. I should have been provided all of my options for treatment. Instead I had to ask what my options were to avoid a charge. I also felt like I was being nickel and dimed to get a PD measurement. More details on both of those issues are below. I called prior to my appointment to ask a few clarifying questions. Although the information I uncovered during the call was disappointing the person I spoke with (Mat) was very helpful and if my review were based solely on the role they played in my experience at EotC it would be an easy 5/5 stars. I recently started a new job with benefits after months of being underemployed with no benefits. times are tight atm and my prescription is out of date. I wanted to verify that the copay would be $0 like my insurance stated. My goal here was to get a new prescription to replace my out of date prescription at the lowest cost possible. Only when I asked what my copay would be was I told that this clinic does some sort of advanced retinal mapping instead of traditional dilation as a part of their default eye exam. They stated that the fee for this mapping alone is $39 and that almost no insurance covers this mapping. Mat got the OK from the doctor for me to get a traditional eye dilation exam which my insurance would fully cover. I appreciate that Mat went above and beyond but I feel like I should have been given the choice of a traditional exam. I felt this was EotC's way of making a few extra $$. They do have a sign indicating this $39 charge at the reception desk but iirc at no time when booking did it reference this. Another issue regarding a pupillary distance measurement (commonly referred to as PD). There are a pair of specialized goggles that I want, and the manufacturer stressed that to have the prescription work properly it is imperative that I get my PD measured. I found out online that this is not super hard for your average Joe like myself to measure independently. There are even free apps available to aid in measuring your PD. Apparently, during an exam this would take a technician seconds to measure and a lot of places are happy to do it for free. I will be measuring my PD myself because they wanted to charge me $35 for a few seconds of work. I contacted my insurance company to confirm that having this measured isn't explicitly a part of a routine prescription filling and not covered by insurance. The person I spoke to (who previously was a technician at an optometrist) told me that while they technically don't have to provide me with this measurement in their opinion it is a bit of a shady practice to charge for a PD. I was also told that often your PD is measured by default as the optometrist may need this if you purchase eyewear through their office. If the office is motivated by making as much money off of you as possible (which I got the impression is the case with EotC), despite already having your PD they won't provide it to you because they know that if you don't know what your PD is you may be more inclined to purchase eyewear through them instead of online or another place. I have no idea if my PD was measured but if you did measure it for your records, I would still really appreciate it if you could give me this info as a courtesy. Who knows, it may influence my opinion on EotC and my willingness to return. read more

I've been going here for a couple years for exams, contacts, and glasses. They do a thorough job, keep me informed of any issues and explain things well. They have some kind of modern eye scanning machine (I forget the name) which replaces the air puff to the eye which I've had to go through at other places, so I like that. Hours are good, I've always been able to get in when I need to. I've been here during covid and protocols are followed properly so I feel safe here. I've also taken my kids here so I know they're good with kids too. They're patient with children and are able to conduct a thorough exam even when my kids aren't able to stay still for more than a few minutes at a time. My only complaint would be that sometimes there's communication problems. I've left thinking I've ordered contacts, or that they would be mailed to me instead of picked up, then called later to see what's taking so long and discovered that someone dropped the ball. That's been annoying, but just be extra clear and it shouldn't be a problem. They're good enough in other ways that I'm going to keep going here. read more

Based on admittedly a single experience here: this is the best eye place I've ever been to. It was the easiest eyeglasses purchase I've ever done! They have the largest selection of frames I've seen. And I'm pretty sure they're the best VSP Premier member in at least all of North Seattle and maybe beyond. I basically showed up out of the blue one day to take a look at their frames after not really finding what I wanted at two other places. I found a really well laid out store with a great selection of frames from different brands. I found what I wanted almost immediately which surprised me after agonizing over the selection at the two other places. Then they set me up with an optometrist on the spot to measure me and get the order in for a new pair of glasses. They made the process super easy and then emailed a complete itemized receipt later. I've visited Eyes On The City a couple of times now (just had my 2nd annual exam), and I have been extremely satisfied with the quality of the service, not only from the doctor (Lin), but also from the entire staff who have been friendly, patient, and helpful. Last year when I first got my glasses, I had some issues with the prescriptions and fit (not their fault), and they worked with me to ensure that everything was exactly correct, even replacing glasses for me. They recently moved to a new location near Greenlake, and this is a very nice facility. I was concerned initially that parking might be difficult, but it was easy. No problems at all. Two months ago I made an appointment with their Optometrist to renew my eyeglasses prescription. At the time I informed them that my Ophthalmologist (highly specialized MD) recently completed a full exam with optic nerve scan so I didn't need another...and my insurance won't pay for it. "No worries. Just send us the report." I did. Yesterday they called to say they needed to have the scan itself, not just the report. I ordered it from Harborview. This morning, less than one hour before my appointment, they called to (very courteously) insist that they must conduct their own scan. I pointed out that their website implies that the $40 scan is an option, not required. Well. No. Must have it. Too bad. I know a bait and switch when I see it. I couldn't recommend Eyes on the City more highly. Dr. Craddock is very knowledgeable and is a wonderful human. Thinking about eyeballs gives me the willies, and this is something I explained to the staff the first time I visited. They've remembered this about me ever since, and they always take great care of me. These people know their stuff!! I wear progressives, and whatever service they use for progressive lenses works really well for my eyes. (The two times I've filled my prescription elsewhere, the progressive lenses from big-box providers gave me headaches.) Getting glasses isn't cheap, for sure. You can definitely go elsewhere to save $$ if you prefer. But the medical and customer experiences here are top-notch. The new location (east side of Green Lake) is welcoming and lovely. read more

Bad. Rude. Been a patient there for 7 years. Higher prices but was willing to pay for supporting a local business when ordering contacts etc. Their hours are weird and they're not open on Saturday's. At least 20% more for contacts and you have to go pick them on top of everything or pay a delivery fee. Although I risk sounding hyperbolic, it was truly one of the best medical experiences I've ever had. The caliber of the customer service was outstanding end-to-end, from the moment I walked in the door to the moment I exited; everyone was kind, helpful, knowledgeable, warm, professional, and personable. I was seen promptly, guided through each portion of the exam, and felt educated and prepared to make knowledgeable decisions about my eyes moving forward.
