William Penn Park is a nice, medium-sized park located in a nice residential area in Whittier, close to the city's namesake college. It was a mostly peaceful, warm day (10/27/16) for our first visit. The human-made water features were a pleasant surprise. Although the ponds are fish-less, it's a neat area to walk through especially for toddlers. PROS - free parking - well-maintained & mostly clean - playground with a cushy surface - garbage & recycle bins are nearby - several picnic tables in one general area near side street parking - BBQ grills - many shade trees and lushes grass CONS - minimal parking - need more swings for older kiddos - no soap dispenser let alone any soap in the women's restroom? Wth... - garbage trucks, etc. are constantly driving by towards the city landfill access road (this area, though, does not have a landfill stench) TIPS - Permits for professional photos of any kind are required Review #514 '16 Challenge #80 read more

Penn Park is a beautiful plush landscaped park, hidden away on top the hill on the other side of Whittier College Campus. It's been around as long as I can remember (real long time). I remember in my high school (PiHi) it was the place they'd take homecoming court's pictures, prom pictures, etc. A lot of people take their wedding & quinceañera photos & proffessional photos as well. You do need to obtain a permit or pay a fee in doing so before you take those types of pictures. (Hey, City of Whittier needs their cut). The park itself is a great place to take the kids to the playground area, picnic and just hang out. It's also great for mom's & dad's to take their strollers and walk through the park, which has a variety of sidewalks to go through. Also great for toddler & small children to go walking w/parents as well. Has a few ponds here & there you'll walk by and throw pennies (usually seems like it's empty lately as the big two legged fish seem to dive in for them) and romantic place for couples of all ages. Beautiful flowers, bushes & trees througout. Parking available out on street (marked parallel) and surrounding neighborhood up hill, also with multiple entances. Best times are always the weekdays if you want to enjoy the peace, tranquility and enjoy the sounds of children playing in playground. Weekends on good sunny days can get a little busy and always brings all kind of people to the park :( I'm really trying to put that in a nice way. Enjoy! read more

I love this park. We had our baby reveal here and had a small photo shoot and it was so amazing. It was not crowded at all. And the scenery is amazing. The trees and they even have a waterfall which is usually only on the weekends. The park is kind of hidden is up the hill and the parking is on top so to go into the park you have to go down some steps. Which makes it hidden. They have a kids area to play which is right next to the bathroom so make sure you take care of your kids well. They have more than enough tables where you can have events or bbq. Today we came for a friends baby shower which was in the corner and there was two other event happening at the tables and there was more room for others to sit down. Everyone that comes here is very well mannered and respectful so there's never been any issues here. Great park for events, photo shoots, or even just bringing your kids to have fun. Will definitely plan my next event here next summer! read more

Loved this park Came to Whittier with my Girlfriend to eat breakfast at the Original Pancake House and decided to go to a park. I looked up parks close by and saw pictures of the little waterfalls they have. It's a beautiful park that helps you relax and enjoy nature. We might visit again when we are in the area. This is my favorite park that is in Whittier and close to home. They have a really nice playground for kids to play. The cushion on the floor is so bouncy I love standing there. The restrooms are right next to the playground which is nice. The scenery is my favorite part of this park. I always come here any time I want to take pictures with my family. The grass and trees are so green it's beautiful. They have a bridge that takes you to a path to walk where there are more beautiful trees as well as a little water river. The park is a decent size to walk or run around. Parking is very limited. There is not much places to park and the college is right next to it so it makes it even more limited. I have had parties here and was always able to get enough tables for my party. Love it here! read more

Penn is a beautiful Works Progress Administration park from 1940 (bricks in the walkways tell you so). Located up a hill away from traffic in a safe neighborhood, it's a great place to do some thinking, have a picnic, or take eating disordered kids on walks. There's a playground for younger kids, quite a few picnic benches, restrooms (which are startlingly clean and feature touch-free faucets...but no soap!), sitting-type benches, and convenient parking. Signs tell you the wide grassy expanses are not to be used for sports (also that you need a permit for photography), which is kind of nice, but also a bit of a shame. No dogs allowed, either. The brick walkways lead you in loops around some of the most particularly nice features of the park. The flattest loop takes you around the grass. The loop that goes up the smaller hill takes you over a little bridge spanning a basin of water, then another bridge takes you past a pretty waterfall, the source of all that water. There are also a lot of flowering bushes, and it's a fairly shady path. The highest loop, which takes you on some steep hills the ED kids like for calorie-burning, takes you past an ivy-covered hill and under pink-flowering trees. I don't recall ever seeing graffiti, but the park seems to be maintained very well (I've seen workers there regularly), so I'm guessing if it happens, it's taken care of quickly. read more

It's a cute little park located nearby Whittier College. I like the look and feel of it. They have some playground equipment, plenty of picnic tables, and a little stream. I wish it were a bit bigger to walk around but it's a good park for a picnic or to take your kids on a sunny day. Watch out for wasps though. Wonderful park but I live walking distance and it is always packed on weekends. During the week it is great because it's a lot more quaint and peaceful. The city employees take pride in keeping the grounds clean and it shows. read more

Dope park took a 12 mile Cruz here from el Monte just to enjoy a nice clean park with out a wanna be thug loitering the park and irresponsible ghetto families that don't pick up after themselves. Main reason why a city like el Monte can't have something nice like this, damn shame. This is a GREAT park for many purposes! It is a bit off the beaten LA/OC path and is primarily fenced in. According to Whittier's city website, there are 84 picnic tables and onsite BBQ's. There is a beautiful man-made stream and foresty walk area. A waking path takes you around the 8 acre park. With massive green space and hills, this park is great for kids and ball play. The playground has the rubber surfacing and the equipment is well maintained. Great for all ages! There is a splash pad/water spray area for the hot days of summer. The restrooms are immediately accessible and always clean when we are there. I highly recommend for a quiet stroll, family playdates, or parties and birthdays. GREAT park!! read more

This is a beautiful park tucked away at the end if a residential street and across from the city dump. There are many trees and plenty of grass to relax, have a picnic, play volleyball, catch a ball or just people watch. There's also a hiking trail with a man made stream that is so beautiful and peaceful and definitely worth checking out. The kids play area is right in the middle of the bathrooms and the benches and bbq grills. There are many benches and grills enough to have multiple parties and really close to the play area, bathrooms, water sprayer. We went on a Sunday in the middle of summer and the water sprayer wasn't turned on. I'm not sure if the city decided not to turn it on because of the drought or if they're not turned on on sundays. Overall a beautiful, clean park. Note: kids play area seems geared more for the 2-5 year olds because it doesn't have many climbing features nor does it have any big slides. read more

Most beautiful and nice park I've ever seen so far. I felt I was in another state or world even... Nice trees, greenery, flowers, benches, ponds, mini waterfalls, stairs, iron work. So romantic for couples. They also have a family picnic area and play area for kids. The cool stuff I spoke of is kind of hidden, be sure to walk to the back of the park and up the little trails so you can see it. You will love it!! read more

My nephew was married in this park in from of the fountain. Nice place for a wedding. Clean and beautiful.

I haven't been there in many, many years. But i'm grateful to see recent pictures show that it is still beautiful. In the 1950s it was a lovely park, filled with things to do. Our family would take outings to Penn Park to "feed the ducks." I remember a small bridge and lovely waterways and ponds where ducks lived. We fed them bread crumbs. There was a tall hill that we'd roll down, nearly out of control. So many old-growth trees, lush grass and brick sidewalks still remain. I dearly loved Penn Park. It looks like it's been well preserved. read more
