I've been on a history kick lately, doing research on an Army unit that a couple of my uncles served in during World War II, the 100th/442nd Regimental Combat Team. And came across the story of Private First Class Sadao Munemori, the only Medal of Honor recipient in the unit during World War II, and the fact he was a native of Glendale. The Go For Broke National Education Center in Little Tokyo mentioned a little while back that the city of Glendale was dedicating the square housing their Veterans Memorial as the Sadao Munemori Memorial Square. Bookmarked it and made plans to visit it when the opportunity presented itself. This past Saturday the opportunity presented itself, and I made my way to Glendale. Easy to get to, lots of street parking on a Saturday. The .Memorial Square is on the northern corner of Isabel & Broadway. The memorials are divided by conflict: War on Terror, Vietnam, Korea, World War II, & World War I. Sadao Munemori's name is on the bottom of the WWII memorial, set off by itself. It was quite appropriate that I visit a Veteran's memorial on the Memorial Day holiday. There is a Japanese saying, "okage sama de" (I am what I am because of you). My life & those of other Americans of Japanese ancestry would be different without the exemplary conduct of the 100/442 and all other AJA units, and I certainly would not have the Army career I had either. Glendale City Hall invited me to their holiday tree lighting event, (but I live in Burbank)... And so, I went. Parking around the government buildings were taken. It was okay, I parked in the public parking lots and walked over. I stayed at the event for an hour, but found it would open skating rink hours, (but didn't find out those exact hours). The Glendale Mayor was there along with his family and other government workers. They talked for 30-minutes before lighting the Christmas tree. The anticipation to view the lit tree grew plenty people restless because there was a lot mindless chatter in Armenian around me. It was worth the wait for all of us, (and much better looking than the pics I uploaded). I ditched listening to the adorable childrens choir to explore... The holiday village displays and holiday plants were nicely laid around. The City offered complimentary hot cocoa. Also, Studio Movie Grill gave away passes for free movie screening of choice. The skating rink was like normal but outside. They closed a street for the car show fundraiser, outside screening of Dr Seuss and food trucks (funnel cakes and cheesesteaks). Glendale Firemen and Police protected the crowds. This was a much nicer event that I could have ever imagined. The weather was nippy but nice. Then, the clock stuck 7pm and a slight drizzle started. grow up in Glendale, went to high school. Yes it's a safe city but it takes 30min from one side of Glendale to other side. If you are a home owner and have a business with permitting department. You WILL get extremely frustrated, you'll get more if you talk to the tree. Rent is out of control, utilities double, parking almost none. I wouldn't recommend it. read more

Unbelievable that an entire city can have the stench of cigarette smoke throughout. Did an ordinance not pass? I certainly see the signs up! However the citizens of Glendale continue to blatantly laugh in the face of the "Fresh Air" ordinance. Apartment Buildings, alley ways, side-walk - no place in Glendale is safe from the smoke. Worths city to do business with. They want everyone to pull a permit. Is the only city that closes at 12pm and after 12 you can not pull permits. If you happen to come early they are short on staff and take forever. Is 11:57am now and they need to transfer me to second floor but it just happens that they close at 12:00pm so now i have to come back tomorrow and waste half day again. They only have two cashiers and the wait to pay for a permit is as long as the wait to get the permit. Then ones you pay you need to go back to the original desk to finalized the permit. WOW really the place is full why don't they work like everyone else 8-5. Ridiculous. Look how many people are waiting and is 12pm now. Update: 10/14/2016 I had to leave a deposit for the permit i pull on top of all the non sense insurances i had to pull and spend $1200.00 something i never needed in any other city neither LA, Burbank etc. The deposit amount was over $500.00 i finish the job long time ago and i try calling public works to get my money back and no response. Do i really have to waste more time to get this money who is going to pay me for my time just because this city is being run by incompetent people. Want to know something else Glendale is #1 in credit card fraud in the country. Ahhhhhh the city of Glendale... where I was born and raised. Where as a child I was looked at by white people, hispanics, and Asians, and they would be like 'you're Armen-what???" And I would be mocked and laughed at (if you ever see My Big Fat Greek Wedding, you'll get a better picture lol). Driving sucks in the city and you need to always drive defensive, otherwise you may get in an accident with the other party practically falling out of the car yelling "MY NECK!!! MY NECK!!" (Regardless of age, I've seen grandmas full on dramatize this LOL). The city in itself is beautiful and always has been beautiful. Glendale is a very clean and organized city, partially because the city enforces their home owners to keep things uniform or they'll tax you for it, bastards LOL. Since it's my city I grew up in, I will basically defend it regardless of the bad stuff that goes on. It's a white collar crime type place, and is known as one of the safest cities in the country. House pricing is ridiculous. Shopping variety is wonderful. Schools are very good. Overall, It's a great city. For those who complain about it... don't know what to tell you. It should have been 5 stars since it was a beautiful day but since the City of Glendale is lacking in common sense, and continuous sidewalks, it was a great big pain in the ass. 9.5 miles turns into 10.2 miles due to sidewalk-lameness. What is the deal?! Why can't the sidewalks continue, uninterrupted, so I don't have to keep walking 2-3 blocks out of the way to stay out of the street!!!??? Glenoaks (from Grandview till Concord) is fine, but then you have to head North/East-ish all the way till you get back to Brand Blvd (a 6 block detour!!!) Heading north on Verdugo, you have to stay to the left side of the road (don't take the College side of Canada or you'll be IN the street for at least 2 mils-no sidewalks) then cross the street at Country Club Drive because the sidewalk disappears next to the golf course without warning. It's nice to see the neighborhood on foot but c'mon Glendale, why not add continuous sidewalks...and while your at it, make REAL BIKE LANES!!! Get with the program City of Glendale!!! read more

The city of Glendale, CA is located about 10 miles northeast of DTLA between Burbank and Pasadena. Glendale has it's own municipal services and home to The Americana, a large outdoor mall that caters to everyone. The American was built as an extension to the original Glendale Galleria. Together they offer many stores and restaurants, for all wallet sizes, as well as a movie theatre. The community is primarily middle eastern so all those looking for humus and baklava, come here, it's everywhere. Make sure you read the street signs, there are many restrictions and parking enforcement is always watching. Not mention, their police force is very much alive and lurking so watch your speed. read more

This is one of my fave neighborhoods in LA, its smallish, friendly & has some of my fave restaurants & outdoors!! It's conveniently located near the 134, 2 and 5 freeways. Of course, there's Porto's!!! Who does not know Porto's? You should be ashamed!! They have some of the yummiest pastries, cakes & sandwiches! The freshest OJ to boot!! Go!! Grab a nice table outside. ;) My other fave restaurant in the area is Raffi's Place.. mmmm. Raffi's has never let me down. They have the yummiest kabobs & fluffiest basmati rice... Try it out! I love how they expanded & doubled the seating! Yay!! Americana at Brand is a great outdoor shopping area with lots of grass to lounge & picnic. Lots of shops & next to Glendale Galleria for shopping!! Don't go in December, its crazy!!! The parking is in a nice structure, but it is too loopy for me... Brand Blvd also has Auto Row where most car dealers are. I get my car fixed in this area sometimes. I have to say, some of the houses in the hills of Glendale are nice! ;) All in all, I love heading out to Glendale on nice days to chill & relax. read more

Ah, yes.. Clearly this Yelp page was going to be all about Armenians, mostly negative, of course. It's like a Yelp page about Koreatown bashing Koreans, or South Central bashing Black people. Always nice to read (not). :/ Basically, the bottom line of many of these reviews are that Armenians ruin Glendale, if you're not Armenian. If you really think this way, than consider this - Glendale has been ranked among the safest cities in the NATION of cities over 200,000. There's a reason for this, and it's because, ya, maybe the old Armenian men playing backgammon at the park will take up all the picnic tables, and the Armenian ladies at the hair salon gossip endlessly (and who doesn't at a hair salon?), but we've helped to make this city better & safer, believe it or not. I've lived here close to 3 decades, and I know exactly what I'm talking about. That being said, I feel like people give Glendale a hard time. Stop hatin' on my old town. Have you traveled many places? Have you been to other cities around here? It's not everywhere that you can walk outside at 12am without fearing being attacked as a woman. Does it have its flaws? Too many people not speaking English always makes me feel uncomfortable, secluded and like I'm not even living in the US. Have to move here for the animation industry which it's all in Burbank and Glendale. I hate it. There are some lovely streets but they want to charge you more than $1500 for a 2 bedroom 1 bath with no dishwasher, ac, washer or dryer. If you want to live in an apartment that was updated at the very least in the 90s and is clean you will be paying more than $1600. Found a coupe 2bd 2bth apartments that looked clean and average gong for $2100 easy. Way too expensive. It's so over priced for the crappiest apartment. And rare to get one with more than one assigned parking. I live in Burbank now but trying to move to Glendale for work. Glendale is far too over populated, run down and full of foreigners that pretty much keep to their own kind. Makes you feel like an outsider in your own damn country. I've met some really nice Armenians, I've heard stories they were rude and mean. I've always had a good pleasant experience with them......except the young men. Bad experience on several occasions always with a young arrogant male. But the other ones are awesome to me. The Americana is the only thing of interest in this town to me. I prefer Pasadena. It's actually cheaper, less crowded, safer drivers, more English speaking and kept up better. I'm going to probably look there instead. Glendale does have proximity to a lot of cool things. Great Place. Practically Lived in the heart of Glendale. To start off, I'm not Armenian. Yes, Glendale is filed with arrogant people, but it doesn't mean the other 80% of the people are the same. I can say that Glendale is a very diverse city. There as much Asians in Glendale than as much Armenians. The most hyped places like the Galleria and The Americana, are really nice places. Not even including that the Galleria is changing its whole theme. But there is more to Glendale than you think. Residential Areas are quiet, active and kept well maintenanced. Mornings are filled with the morning people eager to be healthy and fit. Afternoons crowded with the colorful people of Glendale. Evening with roaming teens and pet owners that do pick up after their own pets. Unlike other cities. Activites in Glendale: -Moonlight Rollerway Skating Ring -Great Diverse Resturants -Morning recreational Parks -Main Street Events -HIking in Griffith Park -Swimming in the Free Community Pools -Different Gyms all around Glendale -Or just the Plain Old Picnics in any of the Public parks. There are many elements to Glendale. It cant be explained in just one review. Its the type of experience you have to live through first. read more

Ah yes, Little Yerevan...I mean Glendale. Being part Armenian, I have room to talk. Not all of us are Bimmer or Benz-driving douchebags. Believe it or not, some of us actually passed our DMV exam and know how to properly operate a motor vehicle and know not to do 50 MPH in a residential area while blasting corny fluffy McTrancey dance music. I can't speak for the rest of my people, however. Aside from the Americana or the Galleria, what exactly is there to do? I can understand why the older folks crowd into the parks to play Backgammon. I would too if I didn't have to work and enjoy living off government cheese. There are no shortages of decent food places - Porto's, Scarantino's, Zankou, Kabab Way, Foxy's, Max's of Manila...there is something for everyone. A few pointers: - The drivers are much worse than the ones you find in LA proper. They're not only aggressive but clueless to their surroundings. Expect stop sign and red light runners, no-look lane changes, and sudden pullouts from the curb. The drivers here behave as if there is some magical force field protecting them. - 90 minute free parking in the structures...if you can find parking. And one last pet peeve: Can the city make up their minds as to what colors their street signs are going to be? read more

I have pronominal experience in my specially trade have never had any issues Getting permits until I came to this forsaken city called Glendale I absolutely do not recommend homeowners to do any improvements to there homes since getting permit are nearly impossible... Have a simple project and I mean a very simple project in Glendale but I have to obtain permits to replace street facing windows and it's been going on for almost two weeks now I've spoken with three different planners.. honesty they don't know what they're talking about I have to say it's been a horrible experience I choose not to take any more projects in Glendale since the time used in Glendale I can take out twenty permit in the city Los Angeles read more

I have lived in Glendale 3 times over an 11 year period - each time for less than a year, and each time in a totally different area. Once was just off Pioneer south of the HK Korean Market. Once was in a house on Maryland 2 blocks north of Los Feliz, right behind one of the big Auto dealers (we bought BEFORE the auto deal blocked our beautiful view of the mountains with a three story parking structure - YUCK!). And my 3rd time was on Maryland 3 blacks north of The Americana (so I pretty much lived there). All three times I was living here my favorite thing was just how Armenian so many places were. Of course I often had to seek it out - and when I lived near the HK I ate more Korean food than anything else. But in the other two places I always sought out the Armenian places - for food - for groceries - and for smoking (which the Armenians seem to be very friendly towards in spite of city ordinances to the contrary). Armenians love to eat, they love to drink, they love to stay out late and party and dance, and they all have big families that they spend a lot of time with - as I do with my own daughter - taking her with me to everything I do whenever possible. Also, I find them very friendly and warm - (as well as out-spoken and sometimes brash). If you get in good with Armenians, they will take care of you. I understand this mindset because I am half Sicilian, from Chicago, so if you got in good with them when I was a kid, then they would pull out their inner address book and give you the names for everyone, from real estate agents to auto shop owners to loan brokers to cake makers. And everyone on the list they hand you will give you a deal when you drop the name of your connection. The Armenians are really good at this type of networking. And I love it. The Police here are a little ticket-hungry so make sure to park legally. There is lots of parking here. But even though the Armenians in Glendale are like the Roman Legions in the Empire of Glendale - the new Emperor is Caruso - and his Palace called The Americana. He has created a miniature city within the city, driving many area businesses to ruin. This is not a bad thing, because it brought Glendale back from the dead - and turned it into a boom-town. But he has also done some fishy things - like built apartments overlooking The Americana which cost nearly 3 grand a month in rent, thus driving luxury apartment rents up to near Manhattan prices. Also, he made some deal with the City where his Americana was allowed to build a trolley track over the public-sidewalk (which is owned by the tax-payers) and then he built his own replacement "public" sidewalk on the property that he controls - so that three block stretch of city-sidewalk does not have city police - it has the Caruso-Police: a privately run squad of Caruso's uniformed security guards - which are especially aggressive. I was made aware of this most acutely after having a few happy hour drinks at Frida's next to an off-duty FBA agent who was also a smoker, as was I at the time, and he wanted a cigarette, but there was no public space where we could smoke - because all public areas were under the control of this private policing unit. So the FBI guy just went outside and smoked - saying that the Caruso police were not completely legal. Interesting. GLENDALE MUSTS: Visit the Americana - and Porto's, and Carousel (an Armenian/Lebanese Supper-Club with a feast, live music, and dancing) - and for breakfast, Foxies (they actually have toasters at all of the inside tables). As far as Asian Buffets go, the Vegas Buffet is a darned good one. And Max's is a fun and easily accessible Filipino place. There is also an historic ranch up the hill from the highway - which is well preserved and not crowded, but which really shows what life was like in the Los Angeles area 125 years ago. I moved here a few years back. I like the diversity of private shops and services. What I don't like: drivers are rude, people are rude and city officials are bulling homeowners. Parking, GWP services, cable and any utilities services are double comparing with LA or other cities. GWP has this horrible way to force you to accept they rates and ask for two payments deposit if you are late one time. I wish somehow they disappear over night, the only think whey want is to get your money: since population is using less water, they have the audacity to even say that they need to increase they rates in order to keep the income at the level they need it. Hm, perhaps I am a bit biased because I've never lived anywhere else in the greater LA area... But honestly I have enjoyed living here in Glendale very much- it's safe, full of culture and situated in a great area. I moved here from Madison, WI and although the population of both cities is the same, geographically and demographically it couldn't be more different- but in a good way! The Americana and Glendale Galleria are great shopping venues, the abundance of great Armenian kebab restaurants and homemade baclava bakeries is also quite welcome. Although traffic can sometimes be a bother- it is very easy to walk anywhere and everywhere you need to go. I quite enjoy living in Glendale for the sake of "living" in LA without having to deal with a lot of the riff raff and higher prices that come along with living in a more western region. Although I would love to be closer to the beach, at this time in my life Glendale is suiting me just fine and my commute to work is fast and efficient! (I work in Burbank/Studio City area) I give it 5 stars in the hopes that people reading this aren't discouraged by so many negative reviews!!! Where's the positivity at, people? : ) read more

Glendale has a scam called a "kennel" license if you have 3 dogs or more. It has been a $50. charge up till now and this August they raised it over 500%! We now pay 3 dog licenses at $26. each and now a "kennel" fee of $271.09 yearly! All because we rescued a cute little poodle from the streets:( When will La Crescenta ever split from Glendale so they can no longer rip us off of millions in taxes and now fees??? read more

Fact: Glendale has one of the best Middle Eastern restaurants in all of America. If you are ever in Glendale, which is probably often (busycity), you should have breakfast-lunch-dinner here. Try Armenian Ponchik (breakfast) with coffee @ Papillion Bakery Then enjoy lunch at Sipan Bakery on Glenoaks AND for dinner- either Raffi's Place or Carousel Restaurant :) Enjoy! read more

Glendale is growing by leaps and bounds. There are so many new apartment complexes being built all around the city. The Americana and Glendale Galleria are nice, upscale places to shop, and can be destinations in themselves for some. Unfortunately, Glendale lacks a variety of great restaurants. Hopefully with the influx of people choosing to reside in the city, it will also bring a better selection of solid eateries. read more

That's right, you put up signs designating my block permit parking within a two week notice. Unreal. And your website is down so it's the extremely inconvenient for the residents of my block. Glendale is a gem of a city. Equidistant from great surfing, skiing and only about 20 minutes from the cultural hub of Los Angeles, it makes for a great place to settle and enjoy the SOCAL life. The schools are top notch. The city is safe. The parks are plentiful and clean. We have a veritable world tour of restaurants and various multi-cultural festivals. The home values keep going up and the local government is investing more and more into improving and beautifying the city. Yes the taxes are high and the fees abundant, but look what we're getting for our money. I've almost moved away to San Francisco, West Hollywood, Santa Monica...but Glendale is where my heart is and why I chose to buy a home and raise my daughter here. read more

You WILL get parking tickets because there are street sweeping rules almost everyday and literally everything is ALWAYS under construction so there is never anywhere to park, because OH YEAH there are way more cars than parking spaces. You WILL get enough parking tickets and Glendale WILL tow your car off the street where you live during their tow stings - which they do at the end of the week so you can't get your car out from the tow yard and have to pay more. I've lived in Glendale for over 30 years, and I've never had the need to be involved in the city's Department for building Permits and safety but recently They've asked me to pull out a permit for a job I hadn't done (previous house owner modifications).I'm really disappointed in the staff working there, they severely lack in customer service. Staff is RUDE, DISRESPECTFUL, UNKNOWLEDGEABLE OF THE JOB, especially the employee VERA CHOLAKIAN. I wouldn't doubt that most of them get these jobs with a connection in the city. TRY TO STAY AWAY FROM THESE GUYS. Glendale residents please stand up and inform the community and bordering communities to take a stand against this modern day tyranny and corruption! I moved to "La Crescenta" only to find out I'm still in Glendale but at least it's little better from a sociocultural standpoint. The area of Glendale, down below, bounded by the south face of the Verdugo Mountains, the Glendale Freeway, and San Fernando, is the most racist place I have ever lived. Up here, however, people of different ethnic backgrounds actually say, "Hello", to each other when passing on the street. There are still bad elements in the La Crescenta area of Glendale and they are slowly changing it's character year after year so I imagine it won't be long before it's the same up here as it is "down below". There are more and more people moving to the La Crescenta portion of Glendale who want the rest of us out and since it is still Glendale those folks are well represented and their efforts are more than tacitly supported by the Glendale city government. City codes are ignored when money changes hands and businesses that rarely see even a single customer enter their doors continue to operate year after year without so much as a second glance by the authorities. The law abiding, tax paying, gainfully employed folks who live here seem to know what goes on; so much so that the 24 hour water stores dotting the landscape that have come to represent such businesses are a sort of inside joke. How do they continue to stay on business when there is never a customer to be seen? Why doesn't anyone investigate? Out of fear, perhaps? Glendale is a city all but lost to a creeping undercurrent of unwholesomeness. Year after year bad elements that at one time were unwelcome by good citizens are becoming less subtle and more brazen as more people turn a blind eye or simply choose to leave what remains of the city to those unwholesome elements that have pretty much taking control. It is becoming a city bereft of values, strong moral character, and genuine civic mindedness. For those of us who cherish such traits Glendale is a city already lost to us. read more

I have been living here for a little over 24 years and the best way i can describe is " Little Armenia." Don't get me wrong i love people of all nationalities and all races i am NOT prejudiced but you can also look up a geographic study and it will clearly tell you what the general majority of the population is that lives here and it will tell you it's 75 if not 80% Armenian and i don't even know when the last time they have taken a poll or study of it so i don't even know if it will be current? All i know is i have lived here long enough to know that we have had Mayors elected that are Armenian, many elementary, junior high & high school teachers & principals that are All Armenian. Doctors, Dentist, Markets, Stores, Parks, Bakeries, Pharmacies and every part the the entire Glendale Community is surrounded by Armenians from Armenia Or Russian Armenians or from Persia & Turkey or some part of a European Country and if you don't speak their language you will feel very left out because it is spoken throughout this place. They find it very disrespectful among themselves if you are Armenian and do not follow their traditions. I love Glendale the only part i do not love is like in every race you will find good & bad in people and i do NOT like coming across Rude or Pushy Armenians..And trust me you will come across them here. I DO NOT tolerate anyone pushing in front of me in grocery stores or in banks just because they have more diamonds on or drive a newer Mercedes Benz or BMW in the parking lot. It's not like i go looking for trouble or want to start a fight and i hate road rage but i won't let them take my parking spot if i had it first and i don't appreciate being honked at for no reason at all. So just remember when you do come through Glendale as i was told by my hairstylist who is a very kind Armenian Lady named Carmen when i asked her: "Why are there so many rude and pushy Armenian people that i sometimes have to argue with?" And she said: "Oh you need to stay away from the Armenians from Armenia they come here with lots of money and push everyone around!" Huh? How am i suppose to know the difference how can i tell them apart? I can't tell one Armenian from the other? That is the problem they can tell which one's to avoid but WE Can't... But other then that Glendale has always been a great place to shop and eat at and it had the Americana & Portos Bakery etc. Your best bet is try to come here and enjoy the atmosphere without getting into anyone's business. read more

SOooooo glad that I finally moved out of Glendale.. I grew up in Glendale.. and the neighborhood, originally, was amazing.. friendly neighborhoods.. well taken care of city.. beautiful parks.. clean air.. then, the Armenians showed up.. and gradually took over.. i went to HS and College there.. and by that time, the Armenians were everywhere and had taken over businesses, apartment-filled neighborhoods, schools, jobs.. EVERYTHING... although i've met, and made friends with some wonderful Armenians.. the majority of them turned Glendale into a bad neighborhood... the old men took over the small parks (to gamble, smoke and gather all day)... the school classrooms were jam-packed with masses of them, that speak Armenian to Armenian teachers.. They don't care for keeping up the look of neighborhoods.. they only care to keep Armenians happy and push their weight around with everyone else.. and in all honesty.. i really don't know why Little Armenia is in Hollywood???...
