I made a deliberate exit off of I10 just to check it out. Upon entering you see patrons eating at tables along the wall across from the meat showcase. Down a narrow aisle towards the back you see a line of folks ordering to-go food, but there is no recognizable way to determine how to order out of the meatcase. I finally got a clerk to notice that I wanted something out of the case, ... he gathered my selected items and said, "meet me at the register." I purchased the beef links, hot chubbys, and the homemade weiners. That night, I had it all on the smoker. Everything was delicious. I found the weiners very dense and meaty, but heavy on salt content. I tried marinating them, to tone the salt down a bit, but to no avail. I'll be boiling the next batch to see if that helps. Overall, City Market is a place to visit if you're flying down I10 past Schulenburg, Texas. I'll be back. read more

Visited this small meat market as we were on our Painted Churches Day Trip. It's a small market that has jerky, different packaged sausages & fresh meat. You can view the choices in a glass-lined meat case. I bought Deer sausage seasoned with garlic for $4.50/pk. I asked the clerk about it and it seemed to be a favorite for some. I ended up frying some up today and it was nice, mild, lean, not overly greasy & no gamey flavor. It's a blend of Pork, Venison & spices. Cute place. Awesome food. I got the bbq Sunday and my husband got the half chicken with potato salad and Cole slaw.

We stopped by on the way between Houston and San Antonio for a quick lunch. Chopped beef sandwich had a stale bun, meat had no seasoning or sauce. Potato salad was interesting, but not great. BBQ beans were ranch style straight from the can. Plasticware was loose in a can with no cover or wrapping. Prepared food is not at all recommended, but the meat market looked promising. read more

My wife and I stopped for lunch and had two sliced beef sandwiches and tea. The process needs some work. We asked how to order and were told to go out to the bbq pit and tell them what you want. The pit master said they only sell by the pound and if we want sandwiches to go back inside. So we ordered and waited a few minutes. There was no one at the register so we waited a few more minutes. Got the sandwiches but no drink cups and had to wait a few more minutes for the cups. Finally for the food: Their brisket is moist and tender but no smoke flavor at all. The sauce is not good either. You have to self serve pickle and onion, napkin, plastic ware, and drinks in a crowded small space and there only 4 tables. I wouldn't go back for the bbq but maybe for the meat market. We didn't buy anything but the meats and sausage looked good and at reasonable prices. read more

Old school butcher services done right. Less meat displayed means fresher product is of greater concern. Slightly pricey compared to grocery stores but well worth supporting the small business owner's cost to compete with the big guys. Meat cut right and pretty wrapped in old fashioned butcher paper to freeze / store better than the styrofoam and plastic wrap you get at the other places. This is another stop that I make when I pass Schulenburg going down IH-10. This is an old fashion meat market that specializes in sausages and their famous house made wieners. After the first time I had one of their wieners I vowed to never buy the packaged brands in the grocery market again. The wieners are ground and seasoned well with a casing that has the right snap to it when you bite in to the wiener. It taste great especially when you use a quality bun and condiments. I also grab a bbq chopped beef sandwich to go when I visit. I will eat it later in the day when the bun has had time to absorb the juiciness of the chopped beef. Both sides were good; the slaw cold and the potato salad like a German style, very tasty! They have chips,drinks, and tea, as well. We also enjoyed talking with the 3 men who work there,and also just listening to them talking about local happenings. No fancy stuff, no tablecloths, just nice people who know how to make good food, at reasonable prices. We will definitely put this on our list of stops, on our next trip to the Hill Country. BBQ is good - only had brisket and sausage available on the day we were there. No coleslaw available - only potato salad and beans. Just could not stomach the potato salad. Threw it away. I'm pretty particular when it comes to barbecue, seldom buy it, but cook it often. This place gets it right. Brisket is tender, moist and just the right amount of smoke. Chicken, Ribs and Sausage more than held their own. I've sampled more than a few of Texas Monthly's top 50 over the years and City Market is right up there with the best of them. Snow's, Black's and Gatlin's top my list, City Market leads the next group. I look forward to many more Smokey Saturdays in Lexington and Schulenburg! read more

I, along with a group of friends found ourselves at this little place in Schulenburg as we were passing through. We were looking for a quick lunch due to being on a tight schedule. We walked in and were greeted by an older man that told us what they had and took our order. He took 4 orders at once not writing anything down. Later this ends as one would expect, wrong food went to the wrong customer. However the condition of this place and how the food was handled will keep me from ever coming back or recommending this location. Noted as we walked in there were two pans of cooked chicken halves sitting on the counter that separates the kitchen area from the dining area. As customers walked by, this cooked meat that was open to the air exposed to all customers walking in. This meat was not being refrigerated or warm with any heating device. This chicken was not covered or protected from the elements. Finally the one thing that turn my stomach was watching the gentleman that took our order and made our sandwiches stop -as he is placing our food in the microwave to warm up-cover his mouth to cough then grab our plates of food and continue working. He never washed his hands or used hand sanitizer to clean himself after coughing in his hand. This was just a bad experience neither I or the group I was with at the time plan to return. read more

Nice place. Good country butcher shop that makes their own sausage. I had a couple ribs and a brisket sandwich. Both were very well done with a nice sauce. The potato salad was odd. Poppy seeds (I think) in potato salad??? I'd definitely return...just skip the potato salad. read more

BBQ is decent. Brisket was a little dry. Sides are okay. The biggest thing they need to work on is their organization though. Too slow and discombobulated. It's as if the team behind the counter had never worked together before. They need a separate station for to go orders. They need a second cash register. And the line, drinks, condiments and trash can are all bunched up in one corner. They would do themselves a favor if they would bring in someone who has vision to reformat the place. Make it more efficient and bring in more business as a result. People left while we were there because they got frustrated with the wait. read more

Amazing pit smoking, beautiful pepper crusts, moist and delicious meat and smoke ring and fat that just melts when it is being sliced out of the pit. Don't be fooled by the mediocre sub par tourist attraction called Oak Ridge smokehouse on the other side of the highway. Turn the other way. Yes, you have to turn off the highway for a minute. It beats every other bbq between San Antonio and Houston. But you have to go on SATURDAY AM when they have the brisket in the pit. It's the only day of the week. And all those places on the highway advertise with big signs and aren't worth a hill of beans. This place you gotta look for it. But you will not be disappointed especially if you can get some great sliced beef on Sat. Remember, this is not a "BBQ joint" It is a meat market, but they do have good sides and you will always see locals stopping by to eat lunch and chat. This place is why I love Texas. read more

We stopped at Schulenburg on our way home from Austin to search of a meat market that my husband's grandparents use to come to wayyy back when. We have no clue if this is the same one, but we don't regret making the trip. City Market sells uncooked or smoked sausages and serves sandwiches. There's seating inside and outside for guests who want to get prepared meals. We ended up buying bulk sausage to take home. The prices are cheaper than what we find in grocery stores in Houston, and there's good variety. read more
