I got jalapeño cheese, pork garlic, and hatch chili sausage. Can't wait to get home and try it!

I got some garlic pork, hatch chili, and the pork and beef classic and all thee were amazing. Great snap and the perfect chew you want in a Czech born Texas sausage. The business and its building are part of that historic Czech tradition in the part of Texas. It's a must stop!

Absolutely delightful crew behind the counter recommended chopped brisket sandwiches. The gentleman asked with surprise why we stopped at "this hole in the wall". And you know what.... the question is the answer sir. The question is the answer.

What a great place for a delicious Chopped beef sandwich and amazing sausage. This is just simple good food!!

Added a bunch of jalapeños to add more flavor.

On way home from Houston, did a quick search to find good bbq. Have tried City Market in Luling and was amazing. So figured would be Greta's well. Ordered sliced brisket sandwich. Meat was tender, very easy to bite into. Lacked a good smoke flavor. Also needed more flavor overall. Would have benefited from more dry rub prior to smoking, ad that spice. BBQ sauce was ok, nothing special.

Pretty much Perfect chopped bbq beef sandwich!

As a 3rd gen Texan, I am picky about my chopped beef bbq sandwiches, and City Market definitely makes my list of really good sandwiches! It has to have: fresh buns, a good amount of chopped beef, with just enough of the 'edges' mixed in, to keep it moist and add flavor, good sauce, and pickles, to add as I like. Check, check, check, check! City Market's exterior may make you think you have not found the right spot; we almost passed right by. Inside, you will find a store/restaurant atmosphere that was comfortable and relaxing. You order at the counter; we chose a chopped beef sandwich, sausage sandwich, and potato salad and coleslaw sides. Both sides were good; the slaw cold and the potato salad like a German style, very tasty! They have chips, drinks, and tea, as well. We also enjoyed talking with the 3 men who work there, and also just listening to them talking about local happenings. No fancy stuff, no tablecloths, just nice people who know how to make good food, at reasonable prices. We will definitely put this on our list of stops, on our next trip to the Hill Country. When you're done, you can walk across the street to the local bakery for some kolaches or home-made apple strudel.

I love the older and smaller bbq joints! This one was great and their prices were better than most other bbq places these days.

Super nice people. Below average sausage and chopped beef. I was expecting 4-5 star bbq. I won't stop here again.

The barbecue is so dang good. The biggest drawback is that they are closed during peak afternoon hours.

I don't think that itself harms the score but certainly some upgrades to bathrooms would not hurt. The decorum likely from wallpaper to interior finishes may have remained untouched since the 60's which gives it a very rustic feel. Going to win the battle in food for certain demographics..seeing kielbasa sausage with sauerkraut and bacon I am right at home. Country fried pork, cooked cabbage, real mashed potatoes and I follow you anywhere, but realize it's not for everyone. There was a salad bar section but I was interested in other items. Some items were not really warm like the sausage, fried chicken, beef stew compared to other items like country friend pork sitting right beside them which was disappointing. Still food flavor was good and this is good ole' fashioned recipe prep. Chicken soup was very good and scalding hot. Hot peach cobbler and banana pudding for desserts were very good and would put the banana pudding in a state fair contest and confidently claim blue ribbon status prior to judging. Don't let the score fool you, I'd be back just because it's my comfort food preference and I have some tolerance but for families getting off the highway with picky eaters may keep going. Country folks and truckers coming off a long day will appreciate the down home feel.

Texas is known as having the best barbecue in the country! We all hear about the big names that…read morestretch from Austin to Dallas to Houston. I've been to probably all of them. Well, there's another one called "City Market" that skipped right past me. Or, no one thought to tell me. It's one or the other because this place is pretty popular with lines out the door! So I heard about City Market BBQ, the same day I drove to Luling, Texas! It's an hour outside of Austin. City Market is in the downtown area, and parking was a breeze; the line I saw on the sidewalk coming from City Market, I must admit, was long, but it was a breeze, too. Now, this is on Wednesday, not the weekend. I hopped in line, the line moving fast. People are friendly, telling me that once I'm inside, there's another door I will go into to place my order. I like to call this the secret door with all the good smells of smoky barbecue. Check out my pictures of the secret door; you can't even see inside. I'm there, I made it inside, and there's 3 of the most friendly older gentlemen I will ever meet in my life. One of them caught on that I haven't been in a kitchen, never in my life, when he started asking if I wanted 1/4 of brisket. I whispered, "Give me three or four, because I'm not good at math either." Oh, we had a great laugh! I sat down, picked on a rib, and the meat slid from the bone! It was so tender, juicy, and full of flavor. The skin had the right burnt in the right spots. The meat was moist and easy to chew. I was like the Flintstones cleaning the bones before I bit into my sausage and brisket. The sausage was very good, and my brisket was smoky, like my ribs. I have to brag about the sauce. It came in a skinny bottle. It was a new flavor for me; it wasn't spicy, but it had a nice heat to it that I loved! I'm so happy I chose to ride down to Luling to visit City Market as soon as I heard about this BBQ place. I would have been so mad at myself if I had waited and forgotten!

City Market in Luling was established in either 1957 or 1958, depending on the source. The…read morerestaurant's own website says "Established in 1958," and most historical references use 1958. So as of 2026, the barbecue place is about 68 years old. It's considered one of the classic old-school Central Texas barbecue joints and still operates much like a traditional meat-market-style BBQ house. This is an older building, including bathrooms... One of which was not working. Was disappointed that their sides include potato salad, and beans only because when I go to barbecue, I love Colliard greens, potato salad, beet salad, etc. not available here. The brisket slice I had likely the best piece of brisket I've ever had in my life. Now... Don't go crazy. I don't eat brisket typically when I do barbecue. The rib that I had was decent. The sausage I had by comparison to other barbecue places was unfortunately the worst that I've ever had. I'm not sure what grind they use, but it seems like it was more beef and somewhat sweet to my pallet which I personally don't care for in sausage. Overall, if I just wanted brisket, I would return but next time I'm in Luling I likely will go to the place right next-door to them and try them.
