I always enjoy a stop over at Praseks. The one comment of negativity that I feel compelled to make is the restroom doors. Those of us that deal on a daily basis with the effects of combat related. I stopped here to walk my dog, Sneakers out front for a potty break and I grabbed myself some Corn Nuts for the road. When I went to pay, little did I know that the cashier was going to commit fraud on my debit card. Yes, you heard right. I went to check my card statement and saw four transactions to Uber Eats that happened on the weekend of Easter and that Monday. Texas BBQ meets Buc-cees. * * * This is a gigantic convenient store gas station on the order of a Buc-cees that also runs a successful smoke house. What is amazing is amazing. Not everything is amazing. * * * Item 1) The BBQ is real deal and bona fide. You can get first rate meat here or a first rate BBQ sandwich. I had a pulled pork sandwich with cole slaw on the top. Yeah yeah yeah, if you are reviewing Texas BBQ, you are supposed to get the brisket. After the brisket, you test the sausage. I went North Carolina and got pork rather than beef. But I was not disappointed one little bit. This was Carolina quality. In general, any Texas BBQ that does one kind of meat well, does them all well. (An exception is Terry Black's in Austin whose only good meat is turkey.) Usually, if one meat is good, all meats are good. Item 2) They do an outstanding jerky and dried sausage program. Some of the best I have had anywhere. Note that Buc-cee's also does an ambitious jerky and dried sausage program. Prasek's leaves Buc-cee's in the dust on this count. Buc-cee's jerkies are often downright poor. They are sold even if they are old. You can often see visible spots of mold on a Buc-ee's jerky. Prasek solves that problem handily. They plastic seal the jerky immediately. They do not let it sit out in the open air receiving whatever microbes and life forms want to land on the jerky and start multiplying. Now in case you are thinking "Well every brand of jerky you can buy in a convenience store is plastic wrapped. What's the big deal?" Trust me on this one. Prasek's jerky is way way way way better than any national or regional brand you will buy in a convenience store. Actually, in this part of Texas, the convenience stores DO buy Prasek's as well as the national commercial brands. I have only had Prasek's jerky in their very own flagship store. But that flagship jerky is absolutely positively stellar. 3) They have a gigantic cylindrical floor to ceiling aquarium that is knock your socks off. I am a sucker for aquaria and go to them all the time. Having a big aquarium in a convenience store is cooler than cooler than cool. * * * So why does Prasek's get only three stars if it has great BBQ, great jerky and a cool aquarium? Because everything else is either OMG overpriced, OMG bad or OMG overpriced AND bad. The BBQ and Jerky are reasonably priced. That is what they use to get you into the store. After that, the plan is to bleed you alive with extra purchases, And those extra purchases are rip-off-city. $9 for a jar of salsa? $75 for a simple checked shirt? I personally sampled their pea salad side dish and a caramel brownie. The prices were not terrible for those. The quality was as rock bottom as you could be without being spoiled. The peas were tasteless without salt and tasteless after you put salt on. The brownie tasted overwhelming of bad artificial flavor. I have been to bottom tier Tex-Mex bakeries where all the pastries tasted of cheapo artificial flavor. This was worse. * * * The contrast with Buc-cee's is marked here. Never mind the home decoration tourist goods sections where prices can be high (although not outlandish). Most of what they sell at Buc-cees is a huge array of convenience food. Like every candy bar made by every candy bar manufacturer in the United States. Like every kind of carbonated beverage you can find in any supermarket. Like all kinds of sandwiches, and all kinds of fudge and all kinds of snack food whether made by themselves or made by a national company. It is all fresh. It is all good. It is all fairly priced. The one exception is the occasionally over-exposed jerky ... But there is usually good jerky elsewhere in the case. Basically, jerky aside, you can buy pretty much anything edible at a Buc-cees and it is going to be okay. Their barbecue is actually credible, although it does not reach the high standards of a Prasek or any famous name local Texas BBQ. Their other merchandise is basically okay for what it is. I have bought Country and Western CDs from them (generally special compilations made for the tourist trade.) The prices were fair. The music was decent. * * * Overall, Buc-cee's is a better place. If you are on a long road trip, and you are planning a convenience store like stop, Buc-cee's is where you want to go. If you are planning on getting off the highway and eating in whatever town you are in, Well, that is what Yelp is for. They will help you find a good place. I wouldn't avoid Prasek's but if I went, I would stick to a system. Buy Barbecue. Buy Jerky. Get back on the road. No harm in looking at the fish while you eat. read more

First off the ladies at the counter are so rude, then you get in your car and try to eat your kolache, they didn't even ask to warm it, so it's cold. Of the 4 Kolaches we brought, they all went to the birds out the window. The bread, has no taste to it and the egg and cheese, I hope the birds don't get sick! On our way back to Houston, we made a quick stop at Prasek's for a bite to eat. If you've ever been to Buc-ee's, you'll know the vibe--it's quite similar. The restrooms were spotless, which was a huge plus. They have a wide variety of food items and a pretty extensive retail selection. There's also a large dining area where you can sit and enjoy your meal. There was no crowd at all, which was nice. However, the ordering process was a bit confusing. Thankfully, the employees were very patient and took the time to explain everything and even offered some food recommendations. Now, for the not-so-great part: the wait time for our food was significant. I finished my entire large drink (I drink quite slowly fyi), and our food still wasn't ready. When it finally arrived, it was a letdown. I ordered a burger, and it was dry and hard. The fries seemed undercooked and were cold, so much so that my kids wouldn't eat them. Overall, we all hated the food. Another issue was that an employee was mopping the dining area where we were seated. She mopped as close as right next to our feet, which was both annoying and unsafe. We had to tiptoe out to avoid slipping. While I'd definitely stop by again just to use the restrooms, I wouldn't eat there again. This place is nice where fun to browse around where there was a wide range of merchandise and food items and lots of it looks handcrafted and locally sourced. Friendly staff working here make you feel like at home. The BBQ brisket taste really good and has a nice flavor to it where was not or dry or moist. Me and the fam LOVE this place. They prefer this over buccees if we can time it right. They are not open 24 hours, and NOT all the pastries and kolaches are good, but most are. The kids love getting the tiny sausage kolaches. For me personally I'm not a big fan of them. I prefer the blueberry scones, and the brownies. Also the selection of jerky is amazing! The cinnamon coffee is my favorite coffee in Texas! The restrooms are just as spotless as buccees. There are soo many goodies we have yet to try! Tips...the counter people at the bakery side are not always in the best mood. We have gotten sweet and great, to what the hell do you want. So we learned that if it's not the sweet workers, they will not tell you that depending on the time of day you go, you will have to heat up your kolaches or warm pastries in a microwave right next to counter. We stopped by this place out of curiosity. When you walk in, you'll notice the unique, handcrafted items for sale before walking into the actual store itself. Noticed how clean everything was and the employees were nice. This place reminded me of Buc-ee's but add a lot of country and you have Prasek's. One could spend a lot of time looking at the baked goods, meats and Texas brand food items they sell. They also sell out of state brands like stonewall kitchens. We ordered a few sandwiches, the brisket nachos and a mini lemon meringue pie. The brisket over all had great flavor. On point and the smoked turkey bbq sandwich was surprisingly delicious. Coleslaw was bland. Definitely not a fan of the pie. So the meringue was ok, but the lemon filling underneath was as hard as a gummy candy. Just no. Why would you sell me something overcooked or possibly old? So I'll stick with the bbq the next time we stop by. They do meats really, really well. My husband got a brisket and egg taco and said the brisket was gross. He also got sausage in a stick...not good.
