What a pleasant surprise it was to find this lovely casual restaurant tucked inside what was once an old home and now part of a garden supply nursery and marketplace. We had a group of 8 adults who had just completed touring 2 of the Painted Churches, in and around Schulenburg. While our tour guide greeted several servers as we entered like old friends, I don't think that was the cause of their friendliness to our group as a whole, I saw them happily greeting everyone and providing excellent service. Our happy server quickly took drink orders, you can tell when a server is confident in her job and knows the routines as she never wrote anything down but when she returned with drinks, the orders were all correct. She then took orders for lunch, we had a variety of offerings from the menu. I decided on the Tzatziki Salad, a nicely presented Greek style salad with grilled chicken breast slices and some tzatziki with pita points. Others around me had the Rueben and the grilled chicken salad and said everything was perfect. I also heard great things about the home made chicken salad and their hamburgers. And if you feel like your garden needs a bit more color, just step into the garden center after lunch and pick out some lovely plants to take home! read more

Dined here for lunch with my mom and our tour guide from the Chamber as a break in the middle of our day for the Painted Churches tour. I was pleasantly surprised at the absolutely amazing freshness and quality of the food and modern/light atmosphere of this place (a bit unexpected after a few lackluster food experiences in Schulenberg leading up to our lunch here). It was every bit at good as some of the cafes I've eaten in major cities (where there is heavy dining competition). Mom and I both ordered their delicious chicken salad sandwich, piled high (but not too thickly) with shredded chicken on perfectly baked, flaky (but not too flaky) croissant bread. The chicken salad was a perfect blend of seasonings with a few cranberries for a little sweetness. Divine! Each sandwich came with a side of crispy/perfect (seemingly handmade) chips. Our tour guide ordered a gourmet grilled cheese sandwich which she seemed to really enjoy as well, complete with perfectly buttered and crisp grilled sourdough bread. The atmosphere was very modern and new yet warm and dotted with beautiful antique pieces (be sure to check out the old buffet across from the bathroom doors, gorgeous!). And this place seemed packed with many locals in their brunch attire to enjoy the great food and great hospitality of the wait staff. Behind the restaurant, they also host a beautiful nursery where you can browse under the trees through their fairly extensive collection of plants (flowering and non flowering - we saw some variations of native flowering plants we've either never seen before or don't see often so my mom purchased a few for her garden!), chat with the very knowledgeable and friendly owner of the nursery, browse the little nursery gift shop full of unique and beautiful items, and even visit with the sweet "shop" kitties (who seem to like to hang out near the nursery gift shop entrance) if you wish. All in all, a very special experience at this gem in Schulenberg. We will definitely make this our number one stop for meals (and to buy more plants) in Schulenberg when we return! read more

Our waitress was super friendly. They put a lot of pride into their ingredients. It was all top notch! The brioche bun was extremely fresh. The lamb burger was a perfect medium and juicy. The fish tacos were perfectly fried mahi-mahi filets on a fresh flour tortilla and perfectly dressed. Stopped here out of necessity. The other places near by didn't seem to tickle my girls fancy so there we go. I will say this place has a lot of charm. Not sure about the history of the building but very inviting. As for the service certainly top notch. Friendly folks with smiles all around. I went for a burger and it was good, but the fries were exactly 2 potato wedges. I would have liked more because they were pretty good. Love this place! Stopped by for a halfway point for Houston and San Antonio, super cute cozy, warm cottage kinda vibe. It definitely has one of the best Reuben's I've had. The sauerkraut is not overwhelming just enough to really bring out the flavors of the meat. My personal favorite is the fungi burger, it comes with mushrooms and something with truffle maybe truffle oil I can't remember but if you like those earthy flavors like I do then I would recommend! I've been too full to try the desserts but they're looking very tempting. Dropped in with the Family on the way to the hill country for lunch and we were rewarded with a lovely farmhouse house meal. It's located right on the Main Street just about a 1/4 mile south of the interstate. Easy to get to for sure. Plenty of parking and there's a nursery that it shares the location with. Tons of flowers and charm to keep you or the little ones entertained. First thing on the menu is Famous Crispy Brussel Sprouts, what an absolute banger of a dish! They're maybe a touch on the sweet side, but they're so craveable and tasty in a variety of ways. Pizzas, Burgers, and some other sandwiches and salads are the rest of the menu, simple stuff with a good coverage for different palates. Got a BBQ chicken pizza and a lamb burger. Both were fine I think the burgers here seem to be the best route to go, I wish the fries with the burger were crispy and seasoned some more. Our wonderful server recommended that we don't leave without trying the Pecan Bread Pudding. Another homerun for me, soft without turning into mush, just enough chew from the bread and the sweetness didn't overpower you. This is the second time my family has dined here while on a road trip to San Antonio--and there is a reason we returned. Above all, I appreciate the concept. The restaurant combines delicious eats with a healthy setting (an outside garden is so well-kept and gives the restaurant beautiful greenery) and a versatile menu that offers both vegetarian and kid-friendly meals. The food itself is overall good. The stars of the show are definitely the appetizers (specifically the crispy Brussels sprouts and grilled portobello mushroom), but the mains are also great. There was no bad dish, although I did not particularly enjoy the mushroom Asiago pizza. The staff is very friendly, helpful, and patient. I truly have no complaints. This place is a must stop if you're going towards San Antonio from Houston. It definitely was a highlight on my trip. They have a pretty garden outside with several cats that are friendly. Came to town for a weekend visit from Houston and found this gem. The interior section where was restaurant is is very much that of an old country house. You could tell everyone around us was enjoying themselves. The food was great and service was impeccable. We definitely felt very welcomed here. The chicken fried steak is excellent and you cannot go wrong with any of the desserts. On top of all that, they have a cool garden out back which our family definitely enjoyed walking through, despite the good ol' Texas heat. A very neat experience away from the city. read more

The rustic decor and garden area in the back were gorgeous. They sell plants and have a little shop in the back. We ordered the Brussels sprouts and bacon wrapped chicken bites as our appetizers. I visited the Garden Company for the first time today and I was very pleased! I had been craving a good burger so I ordered the Plain Jane Burger, which came with a 1/3 lb Kobe beef patty and all the usual fixin's. Very tasty and came with a side of fries that had a full potato flavor. A fast-food burger meal including fries and a drink is only a couple of bucks lower than what I paid at Garden Co, and I'm sure the burger isn't more than 1/4 lb, not to mention of lower quality beef. After dining I visited their flower market, which had just the most wonderful collection of plants and flowers... all healthy and some quite unusual. The gift shop also was fun to shop. We found this little place as my wife and I drove back to East Texas from Kingsville. We noticed all the cars parked there and decided to give it a try. The house was built in 1907 for $1000. The food was excellent as was the service. The decor was quaint and the tables were rustic. Visited the gift shop out back and bought some things. I'm not sure I'll get back down there anytime soon, but if we do, we will be sure to stop and eat there again. read more

We stopped in Schulenburg and found this place had good reviews. So we stopped by and took pictures in their pumpkin patch. We got there around 6pm and enjoyed their famous Brussels sprouts, pizza, chicken fried steak, pork chop and beef tenderloin and a kids meal. I really liked their Bellini. We all enjoyed their bread pudding too! My only nag was the service was a bit slow but I expected it as it's a small town so probably not a lot of staff and this place had good prices so it was hopping for a Saturday evening. I had them as my meal and then had my favorite dessert (bread pudding) which was also to die for. What a wonderful little gem of a place. We're traveling through and only saw fast food type of places until we saw this place. It looks like a farm house and has several other little houses around it. I tried their peach Bellini and it tasted like a dessert. It has peach purée in it. The dark stout convict hill was pretty good too. For an appetizer we had baked Brie with cranberries and pecans and crostini's on the side. It was delicious and is gone before you know it. I ordered the lamb burger with goat cheese and it was quite good and very filling. It's has 3 large fries which are basically a potato. For dessert we had the pecan bread pudding. It was just the right size after having so much food. It had caramel and a dollop of vanilla cream. Everything tastes fresh and perfectly cooked. It did take a bit to get the check and to sign the credit card slip so I was bummed I couldn't see the outside garden with some light. read more
