I hired City Renovations & Remodeling for a bathroom remodel last summer 2020. Michael Wiggs, owner/project manager, was assigned to my project and he was/is extremely unprofessional, nothing was on time, disrespectful behavior towards myself during disagreements and provided horrible customer service throughout the entire project. I would not highly recommend working with him and in fact if you've already received services from him please seek legal counsel. The contract I signed stated that this business is LICENSED, BONDED and INSURED in DC, which it is not. The license provided on my contract expired in 2006 per DCRA website. This inaccurate information is fraud. Michael Wiggs consistently reneged on many of the contract terms which were previously negotiated at the time I signed the contract. My contract was signed May 15,2020. The contract stated the projected start date was June 22, 2020. Work did not begin until August 10th and a new contract was not created. In addition, the contract's projected duration of the project was 2 weeks, weather permitting. My project was not completed until November 11th (4 months for a small bathroom remodel). In my opinion this was due to Mr. Wiggs poor project management. The first 6 weeks of the project I was out of my Condo because this is my only bathroom and the financial hardships placed on me at a time when COVID-19 was shutting down the DC area put a ton of stress on me. I was paying for living arrangements I could not utilize and I did not budget to be gone for the amount of time I had to be. I never received any compensation for this failure of Michael Wiggs to maintain the project timeline. When I returned to my unit I only had a toilet. There was no vanity, sink, or shower installed. One of my allotments was pocketed without a service or product being given. The contract mapped out 6 disbursements of money. However, once the project was almost half way through I was told by my contractor they could only withdraw 2 times from my loan and we needed to withdraw asap before my money was gone. Lastly, in the contract under "items not included" permit cost was stated, but within my line items permit was listed at a cost of $0. I eventually had to have DCRA close out my permits because he refused to close them out. There was always consistent miscommunication and lack of accountability from Michael Wiggs business, every issue was met with contempt instead of trying to find a solution. After all of this occurred, Michael Wiggs attempted to bully me by having a lawyer, Perry L. Foreman Jr., reach out to me to settle in the amount of $1,080.77 or they would move to sue me to obtain what they believe is what they are owed. Please understand as a consumer an unlicensed business cannot sue you in a jurisdiction that they aren't licensed. That's literally the purpose of the license so that the business can be protected by local laws. I did not give in to this tactic and instead I reached out to DCRA and the Consumer Protection Agency. Both of these local government offices have been extremely disappointing because they act as if they can't take action on the exact situations they were established to perform. The intentions of this review are to make all consumers aware of his business practices, understand local government offices will not be of any assistance and the best way to resolve these issues is to not get involved with them. When looking for a contractor please contact a property management company for a referral or obtain a referral from a trusted family member/friend. Make sure to obtain a business license, business insurance and scope of work from all contractors. read more

City remodeled my kitchen, removed one wall and a half wall. I now have an open concept that's wonderful. They also remodeled 2 bathrooms creating a new shower in the master bathroom. They painted the whole house and and repaired a part of the foundation that had been destroyed during the recent earthquake. The quality of the work was fantastic and I have no complaints. Mike is very good at design and I was able to implement some design elements that I would never have considered without his help. I highly recommend this company for high end home renovations. read more

They keep asking me for another review so here it is. Remember, you asked for this. THE GOOD- I found City through Angie's List and engaged them to do some work for me a year or two ago. Everything was sunshine and rainbows. They did what they said they would do, for the agreed upon price. The work was completed in a reasonable time frame, with a few hiccups along the way, which they addressed and resolved. I was (and still am) very happy with the work, and I even receive compliments on it, as recently as earlier this week. If only that were the end of the story... THE BAD- Because of my previous experience, I contacted them in November to do some work for me. I submitted their online form at their website. I received a phone call from the owner the next day and after our conversation, he said he would get back to me with some numbers. Two weeks later, I realized I had not heard from them so I called them. I spoke with a very pleasant young woman who gave me the impression that I wasn't in the system or on the books, but she said someone would definitely get back to me. She even called me back to verify some information. Then..., nothing. No response at all. It's kind of academic now since I've since engaged someone else to do the work. Despite the fact that they blew me off, however, they sent me yet another email requesting a review, this time on Yelp. Happy? Word of advice to any and all contractors. If you are going to ignore a potential customer (who would've been a repeat customer), it's probably not the best idea to keep imploring them for reviews. Three months ago, I would have recommended them to anyone without reservation. Now I could not, in all honesty, recommend them to anyone. [update] I don't really know if it's related to my review, but a few days after posting it I received a terse email from CR with a high-dollar estimate that didn't even include all the work that was discussed. Mike and his team have done an amazing job on the renovations in our home. The owner mike is very reasonable with prices and listens to the customers concerns. We had our renovations done 2 years ago and recently had a really bad leak i called mike and he made a point to come out the next day to resolve the issue. read more

After reading the comments, I wish I would have read the ones here instead of the ones on Angies List. I hired this company in March 2019. They came out did the work no problem and no issues. The owner was extremely nice and helpful w/my crazy tenant situation. I engaged him to do additional work which I paid for in advance of the work being started. After having an inspection completed by the county of false accusations from a non rent paying tenant, I didnt have to get the work done. This was April 2019. I told him to keep the money I paid as a credit toward addl service because I was selling the property and he could do the work to get ready for the market. That's when the issues began. I was given the run around for him coming to give me an estimate. I started reaching out to him in May and never got a response until July for him to do the estimate. He told me at the onset that I could communicate via his portal and that was the best way to reach him. When I did that he went off on me and told me not to contact him that way. He became rude and condescending when trying to reach out to him to get an estimate and timeline for getting the work done. After several rude encounters, I hired someone else to do the work. I am still waiting on my refund in Nov 2019. He tried to charge old work that was paid for against the money I paid him, charged me for his going to Lowes. He owes me $1500 and sent me an accounting stating he would send me the balance of $50. I provided an updated accounting and told him I was taking him to court for my $$. DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THIS GUY. He is unethical and lacks integrity and VERY unprofessional in the way he talks to customers. read more

I hired City Renovations for handyman work around the house and I had an excellent experience. The workman arrived on time, was courteous, professional and worked diligently and thoroughly. I had 5 wooden steps fixed, shower heads replaced, 3 bed frames set up, air conditioners installed, and a coat rack hung. I definitely would hire them again. read more

I had horrible issues with "Mid-Atlantic Waterproofing" waterproofing my basement. The system that they put in never worked, the sump pumps were pieces of junk that never turned on and the water furthered damaged my basement. After several attempts of not correcting my wet, damp and mildew basement, I just gave up on Mid-Atlantic Waterproofing. Someone recommended City Renovations & Remodeling and I wish that I was in touch with Mr. Wiggs, before my troubles began with Mid-Atlantic. Mr. Wiggs was able to come in and access the problems and explain why my basement was still having waterproofing issues. He was very nice and courteous, especially when I did not understand all the dynamics! I was so impressed by his knowledge and professionalism, that I also had him finish my basement. I would definitely recommend this company and I can personally state that Mr. Wiggs was able to get the job done and done correctly! Working with Mike was terrific. He is friendly and open and he knows how to make a house look great. His employees and subcontractors did exceptional work. I prepared my house for the market and I found him on AngiesList where I got a deal for tile work. He also replaced my kitchen cabinets and he assessed what else in the house needed to be prepared. He identified cracks that I had never noticed and fixed some crown molding. A week before my closing, I had a plumbing issue. My normal plumbing company wasn't available so I called Mike. He put me in touch with his plumber and then Mike's employee did the wall work. The plumber was affordable and so was Mike (in fact, I'll only use them in the future and not the larger plumbing company). Overall, I found City Renovations and Mike to provide high quality work at a reasonable rate. read more

this is a pre review and I will later post a post review. This company is currently doing work for my mother. This is the most unprofessional company I have ever seen. I ve been sitting back watching and allowing my mother to handle things but so far it seems as though he is aripping her off and the materials he is using are cheap and falling apart. I wish I could give no stars... Never got my issues remedied until I spent the money to get other people to come in and rectify the situation. I ended up dealing with the owner of the business several times who was absolutely rude and incompetent-he yelled at me, treated his employee in front of me as if he were his slave and the actual work that was finished was botched so badly-even from the most simple point of view... they didn't prime the dag on ceiling before the paint so it would have just peeled off later. I too wish that I could give no stars. Michael, the owner, never actually showed up for the estimate. After being hours late, and not calling, when I called him he said that he couldn't make it that day. He was so ridiculously rude and unprofessional over the phone that I'm glad to have never given him my business. City remodeled the floor and the crawl space in my add-on room. Mike and his team quickly and accurately diagnosed the problem with the room. They did an excellent job laying to a vapor and new insulation in the crawl space; redirected the sump pump pipe so the water would go away from my house; and leveled and installed my floor. Mike and his staff were courteous and efficient. They cared for my home when my family was away. Mike was responsive to all of our needs. He even added a temporary fix to one of my down spouts without me asking, ensuring moisture would not get under my crawl space. I am extremely happy with my choice to use City Renovations. It is a great company. The staff was extremely responsive and showed a high degree of professionalism. Michael was straightforward and clearly explained all charges. And most importantly he did not try to upsale. I was working with a tight budget so every dollar counted. I ordered the 8hr handyman repair deal. The repairman arrived on time and completed the job in 8hrs. Everything looks great. I would recommend this company to my friends. This company has exceeded my expectations of a contract company. Previous contractors have disappointed me by taking unnecessary shortcuts and doing shoddy work. The work done by this company has been excellent. The only communication problem I ever experienced was when I found out that I had given the owner an incorrect email address, which delayed our initial meeting. But after that, all was smooth sailing.The workers have been courteous and respectful of my property and belongings. I am very pleased. read more

I got an early Christmas blessing when I purchased a Black Friday special from this company for $400. The owner, Mike, told me that no reasonable offer would be refused. He was absolutely right! His carpenter arrived 5 minutes early to start replacing rotten wood from my 3rd floor window dormer. The job ran into some problems because more rotten wood than expected had to be replaced. In fact, the carpenter had to do wood cutting and put in insulation and prime the finished product from a forty foot ladder. Mike, out of the goodness of his heart, purchased the wood with receipt so I wouldn't have to haul a 2 by 10 douglas fir. Even though the job was indeed carpentry and not a handyman special, and would have been priced at about $1100.00 (based on reviews I have seen), Mike kept his word and only charged the $400, which also included his painter repairing a ceiling with a plaster issue as well as painting the entire ceiling! That ceiling had been looked at by two other contractors who wouldn't give me a quote until they could start the job because, according to them, it was complicated. Both jobs done by Mike's company were done in a skillful, professional manner. Mike gave advice as needed on some questions that arose during the jobs and inspected the finished results at the end of the job.
