I don't Yelp but after my recent visit here with my 2002 Sequoia and my son coming in on the same day with our 2000 Expedition, I wanted to take a minute to give recognition and praise for the prompt, reliable, friendly, efficient smog check service provided for over 15 years (maybe 20 years?!) since we started coming here a few years after moving to the area in 1999. I appreciate how Hieu takes the time to explain any anomalies. I don't know if he actually remembers me but he acts like he does, even though we only see him every other year with 3 vehicles in the months of Feb, March-April. He commented on the replacement CC on the Sequoia, which was stolen/cut off right in my own driveway last May. I brought my car here for a smog about a month ago - I had been sitting on writing this review because how upsetting it was. For one, I was charged $20 extra for having a CA carb legal air intake. 2. I waited for 30 minutes while the tech searched high and low for something illegal to get me on (the car is completely emissions compliant). 3. The tech removed the engine cover from the engine bay and inspected my very stock engine; not only did he not reinstall the cover properly, he broke a couple of tabs so I had to replace them myself. I walked out with a $90 smog after being scolded for having an aftermarket (legal) air intake because, and I quote "the data base on this car is a little spotty, the car should not have an intake if it has a turbo". I found this place for my father to take his car in for a smog check. City Smog's pricing was fair, so my father and I decided that we would have his car checked here. UNFORTUNATELY THIS WAS A MISTAKE!!! When my father took his car in it was working perfectly fine with no issue. When he got his car checked they claim the car has failed smog and it was due to the catalytic converter and that when he gets it fixed he can come back and pay for a recheck. The worst part is that after the smog check my dad's car started to vibrate due to a misfire on cylinder 6 which caused a check engine light. Upon further inspection when he got home, we notice that the spark plug wire corresponding to cylinder 6 was damaged in a way that not usual of wear and tear. We suspect that it was damaged during the smog check process, so beware! read more

Do you have a "newer" car with OBD? I have a 2002 Ford Explorer. Smog testing is done by a visual inspection and by connecting the OBD port of the car/truck to the computer. If you have disconnected the battery or have had other electrical issues, the smog data could have been reset. The car/truck must be driven an undetermined amount of miles to collect enough data to pass smog. What a pain in the a$$. A re-test is free within 30 days. Will you drive enough miles in 30 days to have enough data to pass? Who knows! I do have a OBD reader. After installing a new alternator, I checked the "codes" with my reader after 2 weeks. 2 of 3 failing codes are now passing. How long to pass the 3rd? After another week, I checked. All pass. Yes! Pulled up at City Smog at 12:50PM. Doors open, nobody there. I figured he wasn't far. About 5 minutes later, he showed up. I didn't get the free re-test, it was more than 30 days. But I passed and he did give me a discount. Friendly guy, honest. If he isn't there, chill. He'll show up. He's open 7 days a week! Give him a break! I'll be back in 2 years! read more

After our first visit with Hieu, I just had to leave this review but once I logged onto my yelp account and saw that he has a perfect 5 star rating.. I just thought to myself that he definitely deserves to be recognized more! We came here because my bf needed a smog check. After Hieu was done with our smog check he also showed us how to change our air filter, which is pretty easy on a honda civic. But man our filter was pretty dirty. He also told us where to buy the filter and told us to come back right after so he can change it for us. All in all, its really hard to find a mechanic who's trustworthy because nowadays they tend to rip you off with your money. $69.75 for smog check. $8.25 for smog certificate. I, thankfully, found City Smog while on my way home, disappointed, that the original smog place I was going to go to was closed. Their A-frame was on several corners so I decided to just go. It was really my only day to run car errands. Boy, am I so glad that I did! Do not be swayed by their lack of glitter, glamour, and big name. Lam provides A+ customer service! I pulled up as he was finishing up with a customer. He asked how he could help me and I said I needed a smog check as he wrapped up with the customer. He asked me for my DMV letter and I had forgotten it. He wanted to double check that I indeed needed a smog check as some folks get checks done apparently not knowing that they didn't need to. Brownie points for checking. There are couches inside the office to sit, wait, and watch tv, but we opted to sit outside as the chairs outside were under the shade. Lam gave us cold bottles of water and said to stay cool and hydrated! Double brownie points. While he did an inspection over my car, plus a smog check, he checked my tire pressure and noted I needed more air and proceeded to do it. Triple brownie points. When he finished up, I started chatting with him about smog checks and he was polite and very informative. While he was wrapping up with me, he said I could now go to the DMV online system to renew my registration. He had updated the system with my smog check! WHAAA? I didn't even know they could do this! I'm probably going to be late to my own wedding, I swear. I got a notice in the mail saying I had not paid my car registration yet, and I had a fraction of a time left to do it. Went to the website and began to complete the info, but I was quickly informed I needed a smog check before completing my registration. After slamming my head onto the desk and cursing my time management skills, I resolved to fix this the next day. Cut to today. It's been a really long day, actually. I babysat unexpectedly around 4:00-5:30, and once kid was picked up, headed to the nearest smog center, which is on Blacow and Central. I know it was 5:30, but I thought I'd give it a shot. No luck. After telling a lady owner what I needed, she had told me to park my car, but another mechanic quickly handed me a flyer for City Smog, then said they were closed for the day. I woulda snapped at the lady owner for even suggesting I should park, but I then noticed that the flyer for City Smog actually had a $5 off coupon, so my panic mode was appeased. I think I walked into City Smog about 5:50, 6ish. I opened the door and a man behind a desk, I'm assuming the owner, was helping another couple. I asked, slightly embarressed, "Uhh, are you guys still open?" and he smiled and nodded to have a seat. He finished up the job with the other couple, then came back and handed me a clipboard. I waited in a slightly dingy waiting room with mismatched couches, but it wasn't bad. I don't feel I waited too long at all...I was just relieved to have found a place to do the job quickly. After he was done, the owner came back in and informed me I passed. I paid and thanked him....and then before I left I said, "Hey what time do you guys usually close?" He replied that they usually close at 6. It was close to 7 when I was leaving and as a first time customer, I thought this was really nice to hear that he was open to staying later for me, since I was worried about getting it done quickly. They don't accept American Express. No big deal though....and that $5 off coupon did help me, too. :) I'll be back next time, but in a more timely fashion.....I swear. read more

Very impressed. On the phone, he told me how long he'd like the car driven before testing. Went right in and while the machine was doing its thing, he checked over the car and pointed out an issue with the tires (he does not sell tires). He is easy going and friendly, but goes out of his way to check for car issues that you may not have noticed. Charged $59.75 for testing but didn't pass because of some sensor that needed resetting. Other places charge less, or do not charge unless you pass. He did not offer a free retest, but a time limited retest for another $21.95. Seems I can get a better deal elsewhere. read more

Called up the shop, asking if I could drop the car off during a break from work and pick it up later - not a problem for City Smog. The owner was interested in what I paid for the last smog (had one a few months earlier, but needed a newer smog certificate in order to sell my car and help the new owner), and he offered to price match the shop I had gone to previously.
