Avoid! I mistakenly went to the wrong place (bought a Groupon for the smog check/mechanic next door), and only realized my mistake at the very end because they didn't give me the quote before the smog check started! In California, mechanics are legally required to give you the estimate before operating on your vehicle. Michael also charged a pretty exorbitant price ($88) for my 2010 vehicle originally. I brought up the Groupon at the register after the check was done, realized my mistake because he doesn't take Groupons, and was able to talk him down to $50 including the certificate fee. However, he was definitely manipulative in trying to justify the cost -- said the guy next door would come up with things to fix to jack up the price (when he had just done the same thing earlier, asking if I needed an oil change), said that he had lost a year's worth of revenue due to Covid, said that the rent was really expensive. I didn't appreciate how he tried to manipulate me into paying more, and I also didn't appreciate that the entire experience was so rushed because I probably would've caught my mistake. There is no reason for a car made in year 2000+ to be more than $30-50 because they use digital tools to gather all of the information, and there is no wear and tear on an in-house dynanometer unless you are getting the star smog check. Lesson learned, will be sure to avoid in the future. read more

After getting my vehicle registration renewal notice for BOTH of my cars, I knew I had to look around and find a place that doesn't charge an arm and a leg for smog. Looked in the Penny Saver and saw about 5-10 local businesses offering a coupon for smog. I decided to hop on yelp and see what people said. Some placed didnt have any reviews, some where meh, and Performance Smog, there was only one prior review so I had take my chances. Coupon said $20 for smog, but as for any shop goes, there's always taxes and fees that goes along with it. Called Saturday morning, the guy on the phone said he was just finishing up a car and told me to come over. Pulled right up and met Ricky; one of the owners of this shop. Filled out a small form, and he proceeded to do his work while my daughter and I waited in his clean waiting room. 5-10 went by, paid $30 (with the coupon) and told him I had another car to smog. He told me to bring it by and he'll offer me the same price. Go home, eat lunch, swapped cars, repeat same process and considered it a huge errand checked off my "to-do" list. Painless experience, Ricky was great to work with and this shop is STAR Certified! The shop is nearly spotless, meaning it looked clean from top to bottom. Being surrounded by other mechanic and smog shops, I highly recommend coming here over the other guys. I can't speak on the service & repair that they offer, but I wouldn't hesitate bringing my cars back. NOTE: I "THINK" if your car is older than 1997, you'll have to pay a slightly higher fee to smog since it requires a different kind of test. Call first or check online for CA smog laws. read more

Ricky runs this little SMOG shop and there's not much to say but he's a friendly guy and worked quickly with my car and the lady's in front of me. SMOG these days is just waiting around for the computers to do it's checks, so it doesn't get complicated or exciting. The waiting area is small, but you shouldn't be waiting long! There's a water cooler, but you might need to bring a cup/water bottle to fill up. Credit cards accepted, but help him out with some cash! I should of called around before, found my receipt from Ricky last year it was $45, called around after, local shops are $45... this new guy charged me $80, total rip off, never going back, unless I see Ricky. read more

After searching for a decent place to get a smog done, I found Performance Smog. I found a bunch of places much closer to my house than Performance, but I wasn't willing to pay $50+ for someone to just pop under the hood for 10 minutes. I am a big fan of coupons and happen to get a coupon ($19.99 +some other fees) for Performance in the PennySavers recently, so I thought I would give this place a shot. I showed up and didn't have an appointment but luckily there was only one car in front of me. I waited a few minutes then my car was up. It took probably 10 minutes from start to finish once my car was actually in, was only there for about 15 minutes total and didn't cost me an arm or a leg... Not too shabby. Warning!!! I can second that $80 smog review. Same experience. Different guy. First he saId his Internet was down, and drove it across the parking lot to his "brothers shop. The shop across was busy so then he drove it to a closer shop and had it checked there. $78 later probably to pay off the other shop. Don't come here anymore. read more

Cheapest smog check I found ($30 flat with coupon). Quick, excellent service. Deducted one star rating because was told I needed a Star smog check just because I mentioned this was for my DMV registration renewal, and hence the higher price than what was stated on the coupon, but I did NOT...just a regular check. I first went by at the beginning of the month to get a star smog (not sure why I get selected for this every two years...) but apparently his test-only cert needed to get renewed first so I came back a couple weeks later and the smog tech recognized me. They had an ad in the Pennysaver for $20+ fees which meant about two Andrew Jacksons for me with the extra charges for STAR (another scam if you ask me but all cheap test-only shops charge extra for this and if pre-'96 or truck/van/SUV even though its all the same test except for pre-OBII needing a gas leak test). I think they might take credit cards but asked for cash like any small business. Guy was friendly and was out of there in 15 minutes even though I forgot to bring my DMV paperwork. Also seemed odd the ad says look at their 4.5 star Yelp ratings but now I'm the first to post a review? Maybe they changed ownership or something. read more
