The gentleman with long hair who took care of us was very patient dealing with parents coming with a toddler having a tantrum. He was trying to find solutions to make it work and it did. We came here for an afternoon of climbing while in town visiting family. It was my first time here, so it took a good 30 mins before getting to the actual climbing because of needing to sign a waiver, watch a safety video, and take a belay test. I'm an experienced climber, but I understand the need to do these things to ensure safety. They have a lot of auto belay stations set up which is nice if you're coming here alone or want to try something different than your partner. They have some great top rope routes but I was really surprised how much of the gym was closed! I understand doing some construction work and resetting routes, but I wish they didn't decide to do this on three separate areas all at the same time. Two big sections on the main climbing walls were closed, and the entire upstairs was roped off as well. If they're going to have a third of the gym top rope routes closed, I feel like they need to give a discount on their day pass rate. It was pretty congested at times with all the climbers there trying to fit on the smaller sections of wall that were available. I'm sure they wouldn't close this many routes at once on a busy weekend, but I was pretty bummed that they did on the day we were there. It wasn't the best first impression for me, so I'd probably try a different gym next time we are here visiting. read more

Took the grandkids here for a birthday celebration and was pleasantly surprised at the amount and rules of climbing available for children under 6 on addition to all of the other options! The kids had a blast climbing nets, ropes, and walls. Drove in from another town about an hour forty-five out. Went on a Monday around 10/11 am. - Street parking only or paid lots around the area. Meter parking is $1.50/hr and you can pay either cash or card. - The day pass is $22, I had my shoes but rented a harness for $6 - If you're apprehensive about getting a day pass, ask to do a quick walk around and see if you like the space. - Save time, and do the waiver online at home, you'll still watch a 5-minute safety video when you get there, which is standard. - They offer auto belays, top rope, lead, and bouldering. - Their space is on the smaller side but they utilize it very well. - Some top rope routes share an auto-belay option, something I've never seen before. - They have boulder routes, which also cross over one another to provide more, but within a similar level (ex: V0, V1, and V1/V2). - QR codes located around to help climbers with problem-solving routes They have a small gym on the top loft, as well as a small area where they explain what specific holds are called and a small wall where you can work on that hold. I've been coming to City Rock about a year now, and I like the experience a lot. I honestly am a pretty terrible climber, but they have enough variety that I'm able to find some routes that are challenging and helping me grow, but still doable. They also share the space with the Ute & The Yeti, which is nice for a post-climb beer (plus member discount - love it!) The only reason I'm not giving five stars is because of the renovations. I get it, they want to re-do the inside. And I know I'm going to love it! But it's going on for a long time, and honestly it's super hard to focus with the loud sounds going on! I almost wish they would just close for a little and get it all done without needing to send sawdust into the air and have crazy loud noises while I'm trying to focus on not falling. I'm really looking forward to finding new things to love about the renovations, but I hope they're done soon! read more

Stopped in for a family outing with my husband, 15, 12 and 10 year old. We have never been rock Climbing indoors before so we didn't really know what to expect. Mind you, I don't have a lot to compare it to but we thought it was AMAZING! Tons of different areas to climb at any and every level of experience. We did do The cave climbing just rock climbing this time around big overall we had a great experience! -1 for the staff... the people at the front desk were rude, seemed annoyed that we were there, and less then helpful especially since it was our first time and we had no idea what we were doing. Also -1 for the cost. I don't have anything to compare it to but it was an expensive family outing that's for sure. We left with our kids begging to go back next week but for the cost of a family of 5.... it will probably be a rare outing. read more

We just went to City Rock yesterday for a birthday party. Their kids facilities were awesome, and my 3 yo LOVED sliding down and climbing back up. This gym has a ton to do and a lot to offer. We will definitely be back. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 was there is no easy way to tell who works here when you need help. There were a lot of people there, and some older kids were out of control. My daughter got kicked in the face by a 8-10 yo who was jumping down the climbing wall, and I couldn't figure out where the parents were or which staff to talk to. I know they are busy and cannot manage all the kids, as this is a climbing gym, not a daycare, but I would've liked to be able to tell someone before a kid was really injured. read more

I just moved to Colorado, and have been visiting several climbing gyms to call home. I am an avid climber and love the community. I came into City Rock on a Sunday night last week, and was baffled by how rude this man at the front desk was. I've never been treated so poorly and disrespectful by an employee. I was an inconvenience to him. I do not condone or want to be part of that kind of climbing community. Other than that, the gym is fantastic and diverse. Not worth the rude staff though. I've never written a yelp review before this. But I am seriously shocked, and want to bring attention to it. No one deserves to be treated like a pest. read more

I took my 9 year old granddaughter, thinking we'd stay about an hour. By 2:00 I said we really needed to eat lunch! Very nice the price is good all day so we went back and stayed til 5. She wanted to go back the next day! (but we didn't) The staff is great---very patient and knowledgeable. There are many climbing walls to suit the age and/or expertise of the climber. You must wear sneakers or for $5 you can rent theirs--but your own would be better. (or at least take them to see if they are ok) If your hands get sore, ask for their resin (or chalk?) powder. There were a few younger kids but most were older and young adults. All were having a blast. read more

While visiting Colorado Springs our hosts presented us with a local coupon book which included a BOGO coupon for a climbing day pass at City Rock. Setting the GPS for go we were on our way. The downtown area was slammin' and I must say I definitely upset the traffic flow with my reversing into my parallel parking spot - which I made on my first go (to note I found drivers quite erratic and aggressive in the Springs). After paying the meter we were on our way in. Following the completion of our liability waivers we watched the required climbing safety video before renting our gear. The gym was a good size and surprisingly busy for a Monday morning. Loads of bouldering problems to solve and fairly high climbing walls. The route setters were doing their thing re-setting so some of the bouldering area was off limits. Still there was a wide range of problems to solve which I thought was great. Sometimes climbing gyms cater mostly to more advanced climbers and I did not find that to be the case here. What I greatly enjoyed (which I've seen at a few other gyms) was that after you top out on the bouldering wall you can take a slide back down to the bouldering area. My partner thought deathly afraid of heights braved the wall and rode down once which left me elated. The gym also two slacklines which provided some great fun while we rested our sore hands/fingers. To note there was also ample seating in and around the bouldering wall to relax post pump as well as brainstorm just how to solve that tough problem. Probably the most efficient climbing gym I've ever been to in terms of registration and clear safety and behavior expectations of patrons. Will definitely visit again on my next trip to the springs. read more

I just started climbing, but the staff has been super helpful. So far I have seen no issues with CityROCK. The gym is currently going through a remodel, but has offer people the chance to hold their membership free of cost, if the noise is too irritating for you. About the only knock I have is the initiation fee. I feel that anytime a places charges you money to give them money it is ridiculous. I will say this that they did cut the cost in half, because I did the EFT payment. I don't know if this was a selling tool, a current promotion, or what. If you are going to signup don't just assume this is a guarantee as the front desk clerk, honored it, but didn't know about it. As for the walls all I can tell you is I'm glad they have the easier routes spread out. I'm not stuck in a corner or feel like I'm segregated because I'm a noob. Also, I haven't seen or experienced any customer being a Jerky McJerkface in the gym either. While something like that shouldn't mark CityROCK's review, I realize that someone shaming you because you are a beginner can be difficult to handle or want to put up with. So far the atmosphere from other customers have been either friendly, or just you do your thing and I'll do mine. read more

This place is huge! They have rock climbing for kids and adults. For the real young kiddos they have a room upstairs which is more kid friendly with hidden passages and a slide. They even offer a cave exploring which you can track your progress on a screen. They even have yoga and a small gym area to workout. You can easily entertain yourself for hours at this place. Parking is a bit expensive at "their" side parking lot. I would suggest parking across the street for cheaper rates. The staff is very friendly and helpful. I would recommend this place to anyone in a heartbeat. read more

Disclaimer: I have little previous experience at indoor climbing climbing gyms, although I am well-versed in the technical aspects of climbing. City Rock deserves five stars. The gym is larger and "grander" than I could have ever imagined. After a thorough safety video, it was time to tighten up the harness, slip on some climbing shoes (or bring your own; they reassured me that every pair is sanitized). Before heading out to climb solo (or belay with a partner), we practiced using the auto-belay with a trained expert. As I scaled the holds and ascended higher and higher, I thought to myself: How on earth am I going to let go and safely find solid ground?! The first descent is the scariest. I leaned back, took a deep breath and fell backward. After a pang of instinctual panic, the auto belay responded, sending me gracefully to the ground. After I received the "ok" to climb, I ventured to a few of the walls in the large, cavernous room beyond the main floor. City Rock sets the standard for an amazing climbing experience. read more

This review comes from being there since it opened at the new downtown location. I started climbing there as soon as it open and watched as they invested and added more to the gym as it grew (the newest being the upstairs bouldering and training area). I can stay I gladly wasted a lot of time at the gym working out fantastic problems and routes, participating in a open workouts, taking classes, or just hanging out talking. The lead climbing here at the gym is the best in the area, which is why I sought out this place. The huge arch and tall walls allow for lots of different types of training for powerful dynamic routes or techy balance routes. You find routes from 5.6 to 5.13 and the routes are changed monthly, which gives a great amount of variety, but enough time to project something. They also have auto-belays on the majority of the walls, which is great if you don't have a partner, or just want to get a bunch of laps in which making someone your belay slave. The staff was always helpful as I saw it grow and become more seasoned. They spend a good bit of effort on safety and have some watching the floor for experienced people making forgetful mistakes or keep helping newbies become comfortable and safe. I took a couple of the climbing classes throughout the years here and can say they have greatly help me become more comfortable climbing, becoming more social with other climbers, and help me become the fittest i have ever been in my life. A class I would recommend if they still offer them, is a climbing movement class focusing on foot work and balance. This class was the best for me to allow me to learn how to properly and easily move while on the wall. This was great place to make lots of friends with my similar interests. I made some of my best friends in the area of Colorado Spring here, which anyone living in the area knows can be hard and very sketchy to find normal people. 1 more tip: After leaving the gym and heading for a beer, go to brewer's republic (across the street) and tell them you were at CityRock and get a $1 or $2 off your beer. read more

Great staff, great environment, great climbing: great gym. Been climbing for a few years, predominantly outdoors in Southern California. What gym-time I did have was in the Los Angeles area. Upon moving to Colorado Springs, one of the very first things I tried to do was look up a rock-climbing gym to get plugged into. Visited CityRock merely because it was closest and I've been glad i did every day since. CityRock is apparently a relatively-new gym, opened just a year ago. I actually ended up getting checked-in by what turned out to be one of the co-owners. Not knowing this, I was chatting with him and explained that I was new to the area and was looking to get involved in the climbing-scene. He then (unsolicited) offered to introduce me around...and promptly walked me over to the bouldering-area and hooked me up with one of the guys there, who offered to team up with me for Top-roping. Sweet! And that's the kind of place CityRock is: a great environment where everyone is friendly and helpful. I know that one problem I've always had feeling comfortable at rock-climbing gyms in the past is that oftentimes the "feel" of the gym will suck when the group of "regulars" at the gym develop an elitist attitude towards newcomers (and, well, even non-newcomers). I don't see any of this at CityRock: I see new people coming in all the time...and the staff do a really good job of showing them around, introducing them to people, setting them up for climbing-success. Whatever they're doing to foster this positive environment...I encourage them to keep it up! With that social comment out of the way (which i think is really important in a climbing gym), on to some other details: -the creativity of a lot of the climbs here (both wall and bouldering) are really impressive: a large number of the climbs I've down have been real smokers, but highly enjoyable! (some real setting-geniuses there) -spacious and airy: this is NOT a super-cramped gym where they try to fill every possible space with climbing stuff. While this means that there's some space they could better-utilize, it doesn't have that super-cramped feel you get at some gyms. -slacklining: have 2 slacklines set up...which keep pwning me To summarize: great gym. Been telling all my friends at home about this place...and I'm fully-confident that any non-jerk I'd send here would be greatly-pleased by their experience. Now, here is a climbing gym! From the friendly staff to the wall to the slacklines, everything about CityRock is top notch. So where shall I start? First, the route setting is on point. They maintain a good range of climbs both in difficulty and in style. There is something for the most novice of climbers as well as the most experienced. I also like how they have comment cards directly on the wall, so climbers can leave their own feedback. I'm all about sharing an experience (hence my fascination with yelp) so I find this a cool unique feature. Next, the shear variety of wall surface is awesome. Their tope-rope routes are taller than most indoor gyms I've been to, being just north of 40'. They also have an incredible roof you can lead, should you dare. And then there is the bouldering: three levels of climber paradise. In addition to all the climbing, they also have three slacklines (two low-lines and a high line) and a yoga studio where they teach classes. Essentially, CityRock is a playground for virtually everything adventurous. read more

About two years ago, I started rock climbing. I began ON rock and climbed a bunch for about two years. I went to a few classes (by independent instructors not necessarily employed by City Rock) and climbed a bunch at City Rock. After all this, I discovered that I am a top rope whore and too damn afraid to lead climb. Sincerely, City Rock is the best climbing gym in the Springs. It really is. Especially compaired to the place up north, to which I have not been in a while so it could've changed in a year and a half. Not only bouldering and tall, roped climbing walls, ice holds to practice dry tooling, and high lining, slack lining (at which I suck). Yoga classes (which I have never taken), free movie nights sponsored by UPADOWNA as well as presentations benefiting the Rocky Mountain Field Institute. There is also a pretty cool area for kids, up on the second level, where the projection room used to be when this was a theater. The employees are all pretty nice. the routes are changed regularly. Ice night is pretty cool!!! Classes and camps for kids. Definitely MORE than a fan of City Rock. read more

This is where the cool kids train for epics at the crag. By far the best climbing gym in the area. The details: routes from 5.6 to light 13s, setters unveil new routes monthly, lots of roofs, sustained overhangs and vertical terrain plus two lead-climbing walls/arches, 8+ auto belays for single climbers, large bouldering area with a campusing section, monkey bars, two low and one high slack line, near-nightly yoga (thursdays are acro-yoga!), equipment rental and beverage counter. Monthly climber comps keep things fresh on the walls and gives non competitors a chance to try (and rate) the comp routes before the competition. Friendly staff ensure safety and answer any questions you might have. They have womens-only, lead climbing and basic climbing courses, but I've never taken one. Monthly family membership is $77/month, which means that my husband and I break even on the 7 1/2th visit., so roughly once a week. The only con is that it gets pretty crowded after work, but its more motivation to leave the 5.9s to the recreational climbers and start flashing the 5.11s. read more

I am a terrible rock climber. Mainly because I don't practice enough. However, do I enjoy CityRock? You bet your socks I do! (Or shoes...some climbers don't wear socks) They have great top roping routes, from easy to extraordinarily difficult. I usually stick to the 5.8/9's and try my best...but that's the point. If you could do every climb, what's the point!? For those who are in the "promaster" range, they also have some crazy hard, mostly inverted climbs that I usually just watch in awe when people attempt and do. Great bouldering routes, very good at making you work on technique rather than muscle. To help make it cost efficient, you can buy a 10 punch pass (for about 100$). Harness included (usually a 5$ rental).Shoes not included, so I would check out steep and cheap or other discounted equipment. 10 rentals at 5$ is pretty much the same cost. City Rock is a great climbing gym with lots of variety in climbing, great people, free Yoga and other non-climbing activities, and a great place to just hang out! Their climbing wall has really great variety - There are several faces of the wall that have roofs, incline, decline, overhangs. cracks, flakes, and more. All routes can be done lead-climbing (bringing the rope up with you), and most can be done top-roped. If you are an experienced climber, you know these are great features. If you are a beginner, they are features you will have a great time learning! There is a bouldering area. The bouldering wall also has a lot of roofs and overhangs to play with. Bouldering area is really great! One complaint I have about the bouldering wall, is that there are often competitions in bouldering. It takes the staff about 2 weeks to set up new routes for a competition, during this time the new routes are closed until the competition. This leaves the bouldering wall pretty bare for a week or two. A couple good routes are left up, but many are not. This does not happen often, it is only a suggestion to the staff to think about leaving more routes up while setting up competitions. In addition to climbing, there are many other great things at City Rock. There is slacklining (tightrope walking), there are Free YOGA classes, core/ab strength classes, and other group activities you can get into for no extra cost. There are pull-up bars and other exercise equipment, as well as an adjustable exercise wall that you can change the tilt. Great gym to have around! read more

City Rock is a great rock gym here in Colorado Springs. It isn't the only one, but I do believe it's the only one that's not purely bouldering. I have a lot of experience with indoor gyms and this is definitely one of the best I've been to. It's very clean, the workers here are super nice, professional, and take safety seriously, which is important. The routes turnover often, which is nice. They have an espresso machine and serve coffee. They are also working to complete a new bar area that I've heard will have a few taps of local beers for post-climbing enjoyment. I really love the lounge area here, which has a fireplace and several comfy chairs for hanging out. In addition to a good number of top rope and sport climbs, and a large bouldering area, this gym also offers an area for strength training with things like a pull-up bar, finger boards, and three slack line setups. This gym has auto-belay stations along the wall as well, which is a huge plus in my book. There is also a small room with free weights but I haven't actually been up there so I can't attest to what it's like. The downside is that there are no cardio machines. However, I found that there's a river-side trail that you can catch just a few blocks east of the gym, and running outside is way better anyway. Finally, the gym offers a limited amount of yoga classes and they've partnered with a local massage studio to offer free 20 minute massages to members. The locker rooms have showers, which is a plus, and small lockers are available, although you have to bring your own lock. My friend and I have been coming a lot late;y to climb and hang out. This is really a nice place to get some good, fun exercise and then hang out. I can't wait until the bar area is complete! read more

I joined this gym as a member two months ago and have been going 2-3 times a week. I'm brand new to climbing and the area and really wanted to start a new hobby, and I've loved it so far! Signing up was quick and easy. They got me up to speed with their orientation video, made sure my harness was on right and showed me all around. I was worried that I wouldn't be able to do much without a partner, but they have plenty of auto-belays set up near a variety of routes. The bouldering is also so fun and everyone seems really good about taking turns and isn't judgey at all if you're a beginner. I don't have any points of comparison but the place is huge and has tons to offer. They're doing a bunch of construction right now and I'm excited to see what the place will look like when it's all done. The construction really isn't a big deal (so please be nice about it) and there's plenty of signs keeping you up to date about what's happening and when, plus there is still A TON of stuff to do. It can be tricky finding free parking around the gym, but if you drive just four or five blocks out of the way you'll find it and it's a super quick walk. Once you find the spots you're good. I'm so pleased with this place so far, it's exactly what I was hoping for! read more

This place is massive and has so many routes. I went on a Friday night expecting to see a large crowd but surprisingly it was not even that busy. Also it was only 15 dollars until closing for students which is such a good deal. I am considering going every Friday. The staff was honestly the best part. They were so friendly and loved interacting with their customers. They even challenged my friends and I to do a few routes. I will definitely go back often.
