Stopped here on our way from New Orleans to Dallas. From the outside, this doesn't look like a great stop. But on the inside, it's a really nice shop with clean restrooms and plenty of cozy seating. We're giving this place a mixed review because the barista that took our order was not very friendly and he was kind of a coffee snob. We've been to many coffee shops in our travels and never quite encountered a response like his. My husband wanted a pour over and asked which beans were available that would pair best with some cream and sugar. The guy responded that it didn't matter which bean we pick since we are going to dilute the coffee. Yes, we are aware of that but most barista have a recommendation, usually a bean with a chocolate undertone. He reluctantly gave us a recommendation. We also ordered a mocha for me and their coffee cake. The coffee was decent, the mocha was very good and the coffee cake was very delicious! I want the recipe for the coffee cake topping! read more

I am on the quest for a great matcha latte and the Matcha Dream Latte at City Roots is now a top contender!! Presentation of the stunning fluffy matcha foam sitting on top of the milk was a superb first impression. The barista had whipped the matcha to velvety smooth perfection - if you are a matcha fan you know how crucial this is (or else you're cringing through sips of clumpy matcha powder). Mixing the latte was so satisfying and the taste was creamy and sweet with subtle notes of matcha's earthy flavor. They were very busy on my rainy day visit and getting drinks orders out steadily. Lost a star for the poor shot. It was bitter and watery. I couldn't even drink it and because of it I chose not to buy beans. I don't see any care for the shot or dialing in. Not sure why all the workers look so angry/unfriendly but it definitely kills the vibe. But the crème brûlée latte was delicious. Amazing how you can hide a bad shot with milk. Found this gem in a pinch while waiting to check in to my Airbnb. Perfect local vibes with friendly service and unique seasonal lattes. I felt adventurous and tried their banana bread cold brew on my first visit and it was so delicious! Not too sweet either. I ended up going a second time before leaving Baton Rouge. Definitely a study/working environment for college students, but I didn't feel out of place at all. Would 100% recommend. read more

Ive been going here for quite a while now and I still love it. This place makes really good specialty drinks, has plenty of outlets and wifi, and has lovely staff. I highly recommend bringing a small growler and getting a cold brew fill. They sell them there, and then every refill is $10. It's comparable to what you'd pay at a grocery store, except it's local, zero waste, and tastes better. Total triple win. This is the place that really got me into matcha when they came out with their matcha dream latte... it's ridiculously good. I had a lavender iced london fog (i think?) the other day and that was really tasty. Their regular cappuccino is great too. The only complaints I have about this place are 1. They changed their biscuit supplier a year (or two?) ago and 2. They're soooo busy I used to get these square biscuits there for like $2, you could get a savory or a sweet one, and they were completely divine. Now they have a different biscuit that is a circle and no dessert ones. I am still sad. It's great for them that they're busy so this isn't a real complaint. It just might be time to expand! Beware, check to see if it's exam season at LSU before you show up. When it is, you might not be able to find a table. Thanks for years of good coffee! read more

He offered me replacement coffees (and more) of what I initially bought and after some discussion, we came to the conclusion that it's the EBR teachers that can use some freshly ground City Roots Coffee. So he donated freshly ground coffee and swags to our favorite teachers. Dominick went above and beyond to make up for the services that I initially received. Since the review Owner reached out to me. We had a great discussion about what took place regarding service. I gave it four stars based on that discussion. He offered free coffee but I explained that freebies can't buy basic good old fashioned customer service respect. People are going through things in life. Sometimes getting outside is an effort. So, when they visit an establishment they want to experience a moment of peace and contentment while enjoying good food or drinks, service, and ambiance. They also use ceramic as a default if your order is "for here" - love that. - Consistently friendly staff. - Great aesthetic and fun urban area vibe. - If you're cranking out work for some hours on your lap top, the strange metal structure in the paved lot outside is great for busting out some pull ups or just hanging for a while to open your back. read more

I love coming to city roots to study or grab a quick drink! I love that they had a few different tea options, since I don't drink coffee, and I really liked the Louisiana citrus green tea (I think that is what it was called). I'm hoping it is not a seasonal item because I plan on coming back for it!! I tried the s'mores latte and that was also delicious. The employees are very kind and inside is very clean. With all the coffee shops that Baton Rouge already has, City Roots has somehow found a way to still be innovative. City Roots recently opened in the new Electric Depot off of Government Street. They offer light bites, your typical coffee drinks, your not so typical coffee drinks (nitro and draft lattes) and milkshakes (they have an espresso milkshake!). I'm typically your boring americano or black drip coffee drinker, but I had to try their Nitro infused vanilla draft latte. Highly highly recommend trying it! I got excited just watching them pour it. It's surprisingly very roomy inside, with plenty of tables. Also very Insta-worthy inside and outside. The staff are so so friendly. Overall, I highly recommend City Roots Coffee. Their drinks are great, the people are great, and I look forward to trying some of their food items in the future! read more

I like the location and the coffee shop is growing on me. I enjoyed one of the fall special drinks, the Cinderella Latte (pumpkin and white chocolate). It's comfortable there for the most part, and it's really cute. The Internet was a bit on the slow side, perhaps because it was packed with people on their laptops. One unique aspect is that a limited amount of adult beverages are offered, which is not typical of a coffee shop, but surely appreciated by many I am sure. I also really appreciate the hours. It seems that many coffee shops have abbreviated hours because of the pandemic, but here they are open later. The outdoor seating, including large fan, are appreciated with the hot evenings. Every Saturday I go to the Red Stick Farmer's Market and then on my way home, grab 2 coffees to bring home for me and my husband. City Roots is relatively new to BR, but they quickly became my favorite coffee shop. Their cold brew is great ($20 for a jug, then $10 a refill) and I think I got a cinderella latte every saturday in October. The vibe of the shop is chill and welcoming- good place to write or study. I like that you can bring your dog and sit outside. The staff here is always enthusiastic and professional. Oh! They also sell roasted whole beans for those that prefer to brew at home. read more

I am in love with City Roots! Being a college student, especially during Covid times, I attended City Roots Coffee more times than I could count over the 20-21 year. The location is perfect for people in mid-city, and the ambience is one of my favorite from a coffee shop in BR. There are actually enough seats for people, and the outdoor seating is so relaxing and perfect for doing schoolwork. I could spend hours just hanging out at City Roots, it's perfectly placed on Government closer to downtown and great for waiting out traffic before I hop on the interstate and unlike lots of other spots it has ample parking . Beyond the lovely repurposed industrial vibe City Roots also offers some unique to Baton Rouge coffee options including cold brew by the growler and the espresso cielo which is sweet and coffee and all the best things in one sip as well as Irish coffee and mocha Amaretto when you need a bit of relaxation with your caffeine . I can't wait for fall to warm up with real Irish coffee ! I finally made my way in here during the relocated Midcity Makers Market today. Not only do they have all sorts of coffee choices, but they also have wine and draft beer. Now, I am one of those people who gets pretty nervous when there are 5000 different ways to order a coffee, so as the heat index today approached 100, i just took a regular, plan cold brew. Reasonably priced, it was very smooth and tasty. I've had some rough cold brew that actually turned me off of it for years, but this is good stuff. The staff is super friendly and engaging. I'm sure if i had questions, they would have helped me tremendously. I would have ventured to a more interesting choice, but it was an event, so there were people lining up behind me. The atmosphere is super cute. It has a lot of old warehouse coffee shop vibes. Bathroom was clean, too, which is a plus during an event like today! I'll be back soon! read more

I ordered a cold brew with skim milk and brown sugar & cinnamon syrup. It was exceptionally good. I could taste the cinnamon-y goodness in the lovely coffee. I also ordered a Brown Sugar Coffee Cake.
