People made a big deal about the Bermuda Triangle back in the day and as time went on, we realized that it was kind of fake thing. But one thing that is more true than the Bermuda triangle is the Baton Rouge Bridge Crossing traffic back up. It's like as inevitable and predictable as anything can be and I am getting to enjoy it firsthand today. Always a traffic accident always a lane closure. Now usually I do the farm market Road north of Baton Rouge to avoid it but today I needed to go this way. The I-10/I-12/110 Triangle maybe? And I knew that my first stop would be French Truck location. I wanted coffee for the rest of my trip as I am traveling with my brewing equipment. I sampled their Festin, and their single source, Kenya, and Ethiopia and I decided to get a bag of the Ethiopia because it has that profound blueberry flavor profile that I like in small doses, thinking it was be a perfect coffee to share with my friends in Florida. And now on to lunch at Mestizo. A wonderful staff and ambiance. Great coffee shop music. I will bet that if I waited long enough, Tame Impala would come on the sound system. Lol. read more

This stretch along Government has been booming over the last decade and places like French Truck Coffee have played a key role in the neighborhood's revitalization efforts. Despite not being a big coffee enthusiast, I have come to appreciate all they've brought to the table as a serious coffee destination. As a venue, it's a beautiful spot with a good amount of outdoor and indoor seating. Their creative use of branding with lots of yellow, distinctive fonts, and merch are displayed throughout the store, becoming a central theme of their decor. Coupled with natural lighting, plenty of seating, good WiFi and a cool display of their brewing process, it's evident they've taken big steps to ensure their venue is one of the least ordinary establishments in the city. They honed their craft in New Orleans and have managed to do the same here. Their New Orleans iced coffee was dark and potent, while their Japanese slow drip aka Oji drip iced coffee was pleasantly delightful. The cafe au lait is classic and a nice rendition compared to the many places that do the same throughout the state. The macchiato, cappuccinos, and americanos also deserve their own mention. Like any quality coffee place, they sell all kinds of different coffee brews by the bag both online and in store. They also sell food as well ranging from breakfast items to salads and sandwiches. Avocado toast seems to be a big hit here, but they have a wide range of open-faced toasts that includes smoked salmon, pimento and prosciutto. I am definitely eyeing their croissant sandwich for future visit. Prices are standard foodflation but I think the coffee and the ambiance will always be the central focus. They have a good amount of people on staff and therefore the waits are never too long. Customer services on point and the bathrooms are very clean. Parking is available in the back and there is limited street parking as well. With locations in Memphis as well as the OG in New Orleans, they should be very proud that they've done well in Baton Rouge. read more

It was a good breakfast place but it was dirty and the staff was just ok! You order at the counter and then they call out your coffee order and bring you your food. When we sat down, the table was sticky and had some crumbs on it. I didn't see anyone wiping down tables, and when the employee brought out our food, she wasn't much help. So, we just cleaned ourselves. The food and drinks were perfect! I got the waffle with Nutella and the biscuit. Perfect size for breakfast. Overall, I love the space and have for years however it does feel like perhaps it's been hit by the inflation bug. The bread that's used on the toast Meals has been changed and definitely feels like a cheaper option. You also can't mix and match the toasts like you used to be able to. Stopped for a light breakfast with my friend. This place is a cute addition to mid city and it's pretty busy every time we come in! Always a top notch experience coming here. My first visit was a couple of years ago while on a staycation, and I grabbed a breakfast sandwich and regular coffee. It was a Wednesday morning, and lots of things were happening. It was a great location for me to sit there and read a book for a while, and there were several people who were conducting work meetings - everything from running into a friend holding a financial counseling meeting to an architect with renderings showing her client an amazing draft of her dream workspace. The space was perfect no matter your reason for coming. The staff was friendly and great with their recommendations. My most recent visit was after a long bike ride. My friends and I headed there and I got an iced team - just a basic, no frills drink, and it was brewed to perfection. I was offered all sorts of additions, but stuck with the basics. My friend grabbed a breakfast sandwich which smelled like heaven, and another grabbed a cold brew. Though we were fresh off a ride (yes, we tried to freshen up a little before heading in), we did not feel like we were seated close enough to anyone to feel like our workout would have any effect on them. The parking lot is a bit bumpy, but its ample. On Sunday, you can always snag a spot at the bank nearby. There's also bicycle parking, so with the recent improvements to Government Street with the bike lines, it's a nice little destination for folks in the neighborhood. We are coffee connoisseurs so we were definitely on the hunt for a good coffee shop while in NOLA. And wanting to have the coffee with chicory, we found that this place had a lot of great reviews, so we stopped in on our first day. We stayed in NOLA another 3 days and went here twice everyday after!! We can be picky with coffee, but the staff was very accommodating in helping make sure we got what we wanted. It did not disappoint. We did the Iced New Orleans coffee! It comes with sugar and cream to counter the bitter chichory - so if that's how you take your coffee stick with it. We don't do sugar and I do oat milk so we ordered as we normally order coffee and it was perfect! And the crushed ice they use is what's up!! In addition, I bought the last satsuma bread, and it was stale. The only interpretation possible is a lack of monitoring their baked goods. I will not be returning. Highland Coffee and Brew Haha do not sell stale baked goods nor put lots of ice in a light ice drink. Consider avoiding. Lots of young people working with no decent supervision probably only exacerbated the atrocious attention to what I got today. read more

If you only order one thing from here, make it the New Orleans style iced coffee. The best way I can describe it is like melted coffee ice cream. It's thick, smooth, a touch sweet, and oh so delicious that it's challenging to not drink super fast (especially on warmer days, which we have a lot here in Baton Rouge). If I lived closer, my bank account would not be happy with me, but my taste buds should would! This place has an excellent vibe. The employees are chill and knowledgeable about their product, which is great. You can order your coffee is all the hipster ways imaginable, so there's definitely something for everyone. Came here on a week day late morning and it was surprisingly packed inside. The service wasn't slow or anything. The cashier was really nice and recommended the NOLA iced coffee. I'm a sweet coffee drinker but my friend was a black coffee drinker and we both really liked it. Of course it isn't as sweet as I usually do it, but I'd def get it again! The buttered biscuit sandwich was so good. She got the croissant one and she liked it too. It wasn't anything too fancy, I liked the eggs and the honey butter biscuit. (Or at least it tasted like that). The strawberries on the side was probably just for presentation but it was a good palate cleanser for after! We ate outside and it was so nice. As a coffee lover, I would say you can find better espresso - French Truck only provide one espresso blend and don't have guest beans for it. HOWEVER, French Truck Coffee have a selection of fantastic pour over options and they never really disappoint. This place provided me my first ever "fruit bomb" or "blueberry bomb" pour over I ever had, and thus hooked me into specialty coffee. It's been about 3 years since, and my tastes have evolved, but their pour overs remain worth it. It is also spacious enough for studying in, and many do. So I had the chance to stop in this am to get coffee and purchase bean. But never again. I'll go to CC's and just get a cup. My second visit to the establishment left me quite pleased. I'm not super crazy about the warehouse vibe--it's not extremely cozy. However, the avocado toast and Iced Dirty Chai (chai latte with a shot of espresso) were delicious. The avocado toast was served topped with delicious pickled veggies. The iced latte had wonderful floral notes which set it apart from the other Dirty Chais I have had at other places. The staff was friendly and I am definitely interested in returning to try some of their other food items and beverages. If I have any other critique it's just that they close at 6 pm. I understand they are open early and that's a long day, but I have after work meetings at coffee shops and this precludes me from being able to go there and potentially become a regular.
