My wife spent three weeks here in the shilled nursing facility after the repair of her broken arm. The care she had was caring, attentive and personal. There seemed to be personnel attending to her continuously. The staff helped her recover and return to her memory care facility. I work at Solheim part time as an RN. I can say the staff there really care about the residents and are interested in providing quality care. It's unfortunate that the good care doesn't get attention. But any little thing that goes wrong in a Nursing Home (Skilled Nursing Facility) gets headline news and everyone thinks they are horrible places. Not the case. We have had two extensive experiences with Solheim. Both of my husband's parents were there, (my Mother in law for about 4 months, in both nursing, then in memory care, and my Father in Law for about three years, getting strong enough to move to assisted living from nursing several times). My mother is there now. She spent a year in nursing following a devastating accident,and through the care and hard work of the nursing and therapy staff is now in assisted living. We have found the staff to be so caring and thoughtful that they have almost become extended family. The facility is immaculately clean and surrounded by beautiful gardens. Staff greets my mother by name and frequently greets us by name as well. There are activities of a wide variety that include travel to So. Cal locations, games,crafts,parties, music and exercise class 6 days a week. Mom was able to bring her own furniture for her room and had help from staff getting it set up. This senior community is so dark and shady it's never-ending. The lies and attempts to block family members from seeing their loved ones in their facility are so evil it's shocking to me and anyone I tell this story to. My Uncle has been a part of this senior home for a half-decade now. Upon moving in, there were no problems. He lived peacefully in a one-bedroom apartment. They rolled over his Roth IRA and 401K to the home, got him an attorney who is a board member of the home, got him a friend of the home (Roy), took $150K non-refundable deposit, and then a couple of years later got him a doctor of the home and deemed him incapable of making decisions for himself. They moved him into memory care, where his rent went up, and his room size went down. They block me from seeing him saying, "he doesn't want to see me," albeit every time I talk to him on the phone, he wants to see me. I am his only family member that lives within a 3-hour drive of him and have a very close relationship with him, considering he has no children. When I ask them to prove certain things, they say they don't have to prove anything. When I ask them to talk with my Uncle and me, they say no because they talked with him individually. They don't want my Uncle to admit they are wrong, so they block every attempt to resolve any of the concerns. They act like they aren't involved with elder abuse and fraud, but they know exactly what happens. This senior community is exceptionally shady. I know this happens a lot in senior communities, but it hits home when it's a lovely and innocent family member that is there only because of the church he belongs to. A few members of our family toured, with an appointment, this location as a possible facility for a beloved member of our family to recuperate. Although it came highly recommended by a social worker at a hospital, we did not find it at all suitable. Our first impression was the rundown neighborhood when we arrived. Once inside, the lobby seemed nice enough, but the woman at the front desk not very welcoming (more like the strict secretary from elementary school). The woman who we had an appointment came to the front, introduced herself, and asked us to follow her. As we progressed through the tour, we found her to be thorough, but gave off vibes like we were wasting her time. One of the ref flags we were looking for we found...a lot of residents parked in their wheelchairs in the hallways. Based on that alone we put this location at the top of a "no" list. Two members of our group met with her in her office to discuss some particulars. Another red flag was private patient information out on her desk for us to see (HIPPA???). She did answer each of our questions, and confirmed that they had room for our loved one, but again, made us feel as though we were bothering her and wasting her time. The next day we received a call that they decided that our loved one's medical needs could not be met there. That's okay, we wouldn't trust them with our family member anyway. If you are considering this facility, make sure to take more than one tour, talk to patients and staff during the tours, and ask a LOT of questions so you can make the most informed decision possible. read more

Visited 9/29/2016 Located on a quiet street. Plenty of free street parking. Upon entering the facility, I noticed right away how nice it looked. There was a sitting area near the front desk which was very inviting. I looked around and definitely liked what I saw. The staff appeared to be friendly and helpful towards me and especially towards the patients. There are different sections depending on what level of care the patient needed. There's a really nice looking chapel located on the grounds. In the memory area, it's a locked unit. When I opened the door, an alarm went off and the staff came right away. Perfect for wandering patients! The waiting area for this unit was also very nice. The eating areas were nicely done. There was a TV in the eating area in the memory unit. I noticed that the patients in the memory unit had scheduled activities which was great. The living quarters are so nicely done and personalized with the patients stuff. They have their own bathroom with safety features. I didn't notice any smells. The SNF area takes Medicare and other insurances. A definite must see if you are considering placing your loved one in a memory unit. read more

After 47 years in the same home in Berkeley Michigan, my brother and I moved our octogenarian parents to Los Angeles in 2014 into a little Spanish style house in Glendale so we could be with them in their final years. My mother had dementia, and my father had been her primary caregiver for several years at that point. Dad was a generous, loving husband and father, and was fiercely independent. He lived for cooking and running the household for my Mother and their two dogs, a beagle named Brandy and a black lab mix named Precious. As Dad and Mom became more disabled and the constant churn of caregivers and caregiving agencies had become too mach to manage, we reluctantly came to the conclusion that we needed to move them into assisted living. Dad was at the cusp of turning 92, and Mom had just turned 89. This was incredibly difficult for my father, who had lived with Mom for at that point 67 years. But as their disabilities mounted, we moved them into Solheim, attracted to the proximity of memory care to the residential population, and also attracted to pitch by sales staff of their in-house Skilled nursing facility. We felt Solheim would be our best option for keeping Mom and Dad together. Unfortunately for our family, we signed the contract in January of 2020. By the time we moved them in the first week of March 2020, Dad wasn't even in his apartment for two weeks before Solheim staff shunted him off to Skilled nursing due to a wound they had assessed as stage 4. So now in addition to memory care for Mom, we were paying for my father's one bedroom suite and skilled nursing. This was a sweet deal for Solheim. We hung onto the apartment for another two months, hoping he would improve. But the facility was locked down and we couldn't see either of them. Worse, the staff would give us no way to verify the progress - or lack there of - of my father's wound. The staff wouldn't arrange for my father's physician to give us a second opinion on the wound. I involved an Ombudsman to stray to advocate for moving my father into a private room to protect him from Covid, but they made none available to us. By the beginning of May, after Dad had languished in SN since the second week of March, we reluctantly let his apartment go. By mid-May 2020, I had begun to complain to Solheim management about the deficiencies of Covid protection for residents. Masking had been mandatory amongst facility staff and the population in communal areas, but the facility was slow to test the staff even though at the time Garcetti had made tests free and plentiful to nursing facilities. I was personally providing KN95's to my mom's staff, because all the facility provided them was surgical masks, which were worn loosely and ineffectively. It was only a matter of time before a SN worker infected my Dad with Covid-19. As the days ticked by, I spoke to Dad every day, rejoicing that his voice was still clear. I was grateful to hear him taking strong breaths. Overjoyed hear him complain about the food. But like clockwork, by the second week, he began to deteriorate and the speed was devastating. Two days after he presented symptoms, he had to be transferred to Adventist Hospital. I met him as the EMT's wheeled him into the ER. The clothes he was in were filthy, and he was unshaved. He died two days later and due to a lack of communication with hospice, he died alone. I will never be able to process the neglect Solheim showed my father and the cruelty they showed me. The day after his death, the director of nursing was literally screaming at me on the phone for involving an Ombudsman in my mother's care. In contrast, the staff in Memory care were incredibly kind to my mother. The activities were great, and from what I observed from the short time she was there, the staff was engaged, compassionate and dedicated. They welcomed my calls, and I will always be grateful to them for keeping her safe. By about a month later, I was able to transfer her out of there into a Covid-free facility. I was able to hold my Mom's hand when she passed away in September. After losing my parents, it seems petty to say this but I feel it's worth mentioning that a valuable gold bracelet was stolen from my mom, about a month and a half after she moved in. In fairness, we were advised not to bring it in. The theft was discovered by our private caregiver. The day after she reported it, she was barred by the facility, purportedly due to County regulations. The timing could have been coincidental, I'm sure. I had really hoped we could give my parents the final days they richly deserved. They were such wonderful people and not a day goes by I don't miss them. I will always regret we put them at Solheim. They deserved so much better. read more

Our beloved grandma was recently transferred to this skilled nursing facility. We researched the best facilities that could accept her Medicare insurance and we agreed this would be the best place. As a family we had many reservations in placing her somewhere with limited visits due the pandemic. So far the entire staff has been tremendously engaged and responsive to every single inquiry and contact requests to know any update of her progress. They have allowed for an IPad to be used for communication which is so very important due to our grandmothers onset dementia. Once she's been through a quarantine period we will be allowed limited and isolated visits with a physical barrier to prevent any contamination. The Physical Therapist and Occupational Therapist have been personally in contact as well. We are truly thankful she's in a place that cares for her progress and well being. It's important to mention that they have been very recently rated a 5 stars facility by Medicare directly! read more

There needs to be a 10 star rating. Solheim Senior Community has earned it. My brother and I brought our 65 year old brother to Los Angeles from a horrible nursing home in New York. We had asked around and Solheim was literally the only home that came recommended--and now we know why. From day one, our brother's experience was the antithesis of the place in NY. When your family member is in Solheim's care, YOU are treated like family. My brother was extremely well cared for both physically and emotionally. This is an extremely organized well-oiled nursing facility. There were so many fun activities and everyone was warm and friendly to him. Sadly my brother passed away last week. We miss him terribly. We also miss our friends at Solheim to whom we will always be grateful. read more

My family has been very happy with the compassion and care my mom is receiving in the memory care neighborhood at Solheim. We visit regularly and observe the activities, music, art, movement and interaction with residents and staff. We only learned of Solheim through a close friend whose father had been a resident for several years, and we are so grateful to have found the home. The staff obviously really cares about the residents and shows compassion and warmth. We liked that there were three levels of care from active residents to the memory care neighborhood to skilled nursing when and if needed. Every time we visit, we are gratified to hear music, see holiday decorations up, and walk in on residents doing activities. My mom is safe, well cared for, and is getting stimulation and medical care each day and we feel blessed to have found this community. read more

My story takes place in Sept 2020. My mom had been living in the senior assisted living facility and began to decline. One day my mom called and begged me to get her to the hospital. I approved an ambulance. I spoke to one of the nurses at Solheim and they were surprised I wanted the ambulance she "seemed fine". She was not and the doctor was very thankful we got her to the hospital when we did. When she came back from the hospital she was sent to skilled nursing to quarantine for Covid precautions. Her health was really declining at this point. Her time in quarantine was up but they hadn't gotten the Covid test results back which would take a few more days. I begged the staff to let her go back to her room to be with her cat and offered to get around the clock care. They declined because they couldn't fully give her the care she needed in assisted living. I was disappointed, but understood. Finally, they agreed to let me bring her cat into visit her in skilled nursing. I was grateful. While visiting I noticed an ant on my mom's bed. I removed it and kept talking to her. Then I notice several more and realize she has dozens in her bed. I immediately called for the staff. They apologized and assured me they would get this cleaned up. I eventually left, fuming and trying to figure out what to do next. I came back the next day to see her again and they tell me I can't come in and that my mom is in quarantine still. I explain that I was there yesterday and they won't let me in. It's a Saturday and there is no one there to approve it. A couple hours later I get the call my mother passed away. This was such a horrible way for her to go. I will always remember that vision of my mom with ants on her. I do not recommend the skilled nursing for your loved one. This is what they let the family see, I can't even imagine what I didn't see. read more

We have never had a reason to question our decision to have a loved one cared for by the wonderful people at Solheim. The nursing staff, the support staff, indeed everyone we have encountered in the memory care center and the Solheim community as a whole has been outstanding. From the day we first spoke with Lucy in marketing, and then Kathy in social/event planning, Marie in medical care, Joy, Tina, Sheila in nursing, Christine in activities and many others, we knew that this was the perfect place for our loved one. We have never once been disappointed with the professionalism, care and knowledge of Solheim's entire team. The campus is clean, well run and seasonally and special event stimulating. We specifically appreciate how the residents of the memory care are engaged in activities, exercises and social events. They don't just sit and watch TV all day. They truly treat us as members of the Solheim family. The communication from the top to all residents, family members and stakeholders is very much appreciated. read more

My mother was a resident of the skilled nursing facility for eight years as an Alzheimer's patient. The care and compassion she received was beyond our fondest dreams. Yesterday it took 25 minutes for the staff to put my mother to bed after lunch. Ten minutes after my initial request, I returned to the nurses station to remind the nurse. She was busy with paperwork and apparently had called no one. She went to the intercom and called a CNA. I took and additional 15 minutes for the CNA to arrive. My mother is often left in bed unattended for most or all of the day with her food tray out of reach, untouched. There are some good people there but also plenty of uncaring robots. The more visits by family members, the more attention to your loved one, seems to be the rule in this and similar places. read more

I visited Solheim Lutheran Home recently and was impressed by the caring staff and warm, community atmosphere. The activities director truly cares about the residents' experience and all the staff and volunteers were dedicated to meeting each resident's needs. The recent renovations have been beautifully done. It's a special place, in a great area with lots of convenient shopping nearby. When it's time for my older relatives to consider a retirement home, I think Solheim will be an excellent choice. read more
