I purchased a power wheelchair from City Wheelchair & I worked w/ Brock & Bryan. I've never had a better experience purchasing anything, let alone DME. This is my 1st wheelchair so I was nervous & I'd looked into a bunch of places but I kept running into roadblocks or bad customer service, & no way was I spending thousands for terrible service. The way City works: they provide you w/ rec's & research to look at (based on your needs), you pay for an initial consult, a tech comes to your house & asks you q's & measures you, they order what you decide on, assemble it at the store, & then deliver it to you & show you how to use it. & they do all service. Brock was incredible at putting me at ease, listening to my specific situation, & providing me w/ rec's to look at before my initial meeting w/ the tech, Bryan, as they custom build their wheelchairs based on the user. Brock was always quick to respond & extremely knowledgeable, & always willing to answer whatever q's I had, even when they were ridiculous :) He was so kind & not at all pushy, & I felt no hesitation at all bc I felt heard & I knew they were going to treat me right. Boy did they. Bryan came to my house & besides asking the q's he needed to, answered all the q's I had, gave good suggestions, & explained exactly why he thought each piece was needed for the type of wheelchair I ended up ordering. I felt very comfortable working w/ him, & I thought measuring would be weird & awkward, but it wasn't--he was very careful about entering my space & didn't have me even move to measure me. He didn't even really touch me at all. I felt very at ease. Brock followed up w/ me at all the exact right times & I ordered my wheelchair w/ confidence, despite the hefty price tag. But let me add, I did not feel taken advantage of in any way--if anything, they gave me an extremely reasonable price (I couldn't use my ins, but they do work w/ private ins, Medicare, etc) & he broke down the price for me so I understood it, & after doing my own research on price, I know they could've charged me a lot more (so unlike any other DME!). Brock gave me an accurate estimate of how long it would take, & I was able to get my wheelchair very quickly. I randomly reached out w/ q's, & he was wonderful about answering them immediately & w/ the info I wanted. There was nothing he couldn't answer. I prefer texting, so that's how we communicated. He gave me the option for how I would like to communicate, which I also appreciated more than I can say as I hate talking on the phone (I mean, we did have to talk a couple times because of course, but mostly texted). Bryan delivered my wheelchair & spent a good hour with me showing me how to use the wheelchair, going over the different aspects of it, & answering all of my MANY q's. I have a neuro disorder so I know I asked the same q multiple times, but he had no problem answering them again so I felt safe enough to use it. I felt comfortable asking whatever I wanted. When he left, I felt confident & happy to go ahead & use my wheelchair. He also told me to contact him with any questions, which I have, & he's always been great at responding right away & providing me w/ what I need. He also was totally honest, & told me when i shouldn't get something for it, but to do something else so as not to mess up my wheelchair or my experience in it. I value that honesty. & I LOVE my wheelchair. I'm a partially mobile wheelchair user, so I'm not in it all the time, but it has changed my life immeasurably. & it's beautiful--it's purple & black!--& it has all the features & parts I need to make it work for me, & it runs beautifully (I have the Q6 Edge 3.0 f/ Quantum w/ the synergy rehab seat). There is not a single thing I would change about it. They do all the needed repairs & maintenance on it, which I am glad about as I love that I get to cont. working w/ them & don't have to find another place to do service! They service everything they sell, which is a great business model imo. & they come to you, which is also a relief. Brock has checked in w/ me periodically, which I love. He's just been so wonderful at making sure I have everything I need & making sure I know I can come to him if I have problems (which I haven't yet!). This is my second power chair. I moved from Sacramento to the Bay Area and it was time for me to get a new chair. I had dealt with other companies in the Bay Area regarding my old chair and every company I called either had bad customer service or couldn't help me. So when it came time to get a new power chair my doctor recommended several companies including City Wheelchairs. I hadn't talked to City Wheelchairs before so I chose them. Let me tell you, the 5 star review is very well deserved! Brock was my point of contact for all my questions and concerns. He is awesome! He really made me feel good about choosing City. I am impressed that the GM is willing to have constant communication with his customers. He always answers cheerfully and ready to help. Thankfully City takes insurance but I only have a primary and not a secondary. He explained to me I can apply for grants to help with the remaining cost of the chair. That was a huge help! The tech Oz was so helpful he came in and said my two front tires were beyond repair he would have to order it probably be a week and I said I can't be stuck that long I have graduation tomorrow and job interviews and appointment. I've been an ALS patient for 10 years now. I rely on my electric wheelchair every day to have any kind of quality of life. That brings me to City Wheelchairs in San Francisco. Let me put my opinion of City Wheelchairs in two words ... THE BEST! Before I found City Wheelchairs I had used California Home Medical Equipment (CHME) in San Mateo for years. CHME had horrendous customer service! Getting them to respond to my wheelchair needs was an extremely painful experience that I liken to a trip to the dentist. Last year I was eligible to get a new wheelchair covered through Medicare. My Permobil wheelchair had performed very well and I was very comfortable in it. But it was time for a new wheelchair. Unfortunately, Permobil had continued my heavy duty model of wheelchair that I loved! Parts for my model chair were soon to be unavailable. CHME brought out the new model of heavy-duty Permobil for me to try out. Permobil had changed this new heavy-duty dramatically. It wasn't suitable for me. I asked CHME if we could just rebuild my model Permobil, if the parts were available. They refused to rebuild my chair regardless of the parts availability!!! REFUSED! They were only interested in making a fat profit by selling me a new wheelchair, even though I didn't like the new models available. Their profit was more important to CHME than caring for a severely disabled long-time customer! Then I found City Wheelchairs! They quickly agreed to rebuild my beloved wheelchair if the critical parts necessary were available. The parts were available. Customer satisfaction was more important to City Wheelchairs over making more money by selling a new expensive electric wheelchair! This Tuesday the friendly technician, Chris, from City Wheelchairs picked up my wheelchair for the rebuild. The rebuild was scheduled for take three days with me getting my wheelchair back on Friday. In the meantime, I had to use the new Permobil wheelchair that was very uncomfortable for me. I spent a extremely uncomfortable day in the new wheelchair. When I asked City Wheelchairs if they could possibly return my rebuilt chair sooner. They amazingly returned my chair yesterday afternoon ... after only a day and a half!!! I can't find words that describe how happy I was. If you are looking for a wheelchair or to get your wheelchair repaired, you should check out City Wheelchairs in San Francisco! For well over a year I attempted to get a new Medicare-approved wheelchair but to no avail. No matter how hard I tried, I was getting no support, communication or straight answers from any of the wheelchair companies I knew in the Bay Area, even though I met every qualification to receive one. I won't name the less than mediocre companies I'd already contacted. Instead, I'll focus on one, City Wheelchairs, that blew my mind in their efficiency, friendliness, speed, quality & most of all, how easy they made the process for me & my doctor. First of all, they have an "in house" occupational therapist who comes out to YOUR HOME to evaluate you. I believe that visit took about an hour & was quite comprehensive. Then, wonder of all wonders, the main coordinator of the project, Dwight Siu, drove from S.F. to Oakland & met me at my primary care physician's office with all of the coordinating paperwork & Medicare codes applicable to my appropriate wheelchair. Needless to say, my physician was impressed (& relieved).All of this was achieved, from start to finish by Dwight Siu in approximately 2 months. Being reliable & timely AFTER you receive your chair is where most companies really disappoint. Once they get paid for the new chair, they seem to forget who you are. Just sayin'... And we all know how scary it is to be left in the lurch by a company who doesn't get to repairs in a timely fashion. NOT so with City Wheelchairs. I've dealt with their technician, Chris, who was knowledgeable, cheerful & always on-time. And if the repairs cannot be done that day, they will offer a loaner chair until yours is back. I've never had to take them up on that but do know that other companies pretty much shrugged their shoulders when asked if a loaner could be provided as a last resort. Let's face it, we are basically at their mercy when it comes to these issues. In conclusion, at the risk of sounding like an advertisement, City Wheelchairs at 415-508-1153, is the untapped gem for wheelchair bound adventurers in the Bay Area. If I could give zero stars I would. My son is totally dependent on his chair. He had one custom made by this company just a couple weeks ago. Today something in the back support broke. Although it is a weekend, I called the company number and got an answering service that said "We don't do emergency repairs" and told me to call back during office hours on Monday. He doesn't have a "spare chair" so I'm not certain what we'll do for the rest of the weekend. I have dealt with companies like Apria, Andrews, Redwood Medical and all have provided emergency services, or at least an immediate loaner chair. I am unlikely to recommend this company to anyone who truly needs a chair. read more

What you have here is the Wheelchair Whisperer. The owner, Dwight, is an incredibly generous, kind, clever, and creative person. He could do anything with his sensational personality and keen intelligence, but he has a real passion for helping people and an almost spooky instinct for getting the most out of your powerchair. We need to nominate him for some kind of award for local treasures or community heroes. My mother's 2004 Quickie Freestyle M11 powerchair had been mystifying our mechanic at CHME in Foster City for years now. It wouldn't hold a charge, and nothing seemed to fix it. Mom's original mechanic in Mountain View, Rehab Specialists, from whom we bought the chair, closed down, so we were going to this large multi-purpose company, CHME, which was covered by insurance. When Mom's insurance agreed it was time for a new chair, we bought a 2010 Invacare Pronto M51 from CHME and had nothing but problems with it. So that was two chairs that didn't work properly. Finally, I found Dwight. Not only did he restore the old Quickie to absolutely pristine, like-new condition, but he gave me a very good price. As for the brand-new Pronto, I got CHME to replace the controller and the batteries (under warranty). It worked much better, but it was still extremely slow and sluggishly responsive. I had Dwight look it over, and now it works beautifully! He inspected everything and re-tuned the computer programming for optimum performance ... for FREE. I shudder to think that I may never have found Dwight had it not been for Yelpers. And don't be fooled by the address. There are startups and nice companies in this building ... plus it's a much safer neighborhood than I expected. It's a little out-of-the-way, but you will NOT be disappointed. The bad news: my mobility scooter broke down on our trip to San Francisco. The good news: we met Dwight and Mike. Two of the nicest people you could hope to deal with. We were given an emergency appointment first thing in the morning, they went out to get necessary parts, and Dwight (the owner) would even have come in on a Saturday morning if necessary (his day off). I've been looking for a nice (but cheap) manual wheelchair for my Grandma, just something compact that I can easily put in the car and help Grandma to go from point A to point B. Unfortunately, almost every store I checked out were either upselling or just plainly rude. Sometimes they don't even pick up their phone and when you leave a message.. they don't call back. I almost gave up and bought one online. Anyway, I am really glad I found City Wheelchairs. They have great customer service, very knowledgeable and friendly. Actually, the company mainly focuses on power wheelchairs but the lady who answered the phone tried her best to help me. Bonus: They also helped me get the wheelchair paid through my Grandma's insurance. FYI, they cannot do this with all insurances unfortunately. It is better to give them a call and ask if they can. I had only a short interaction with Dwight, but it was brilliant. The charger on my mobility scooter stopped working. You could plug it in, and the red light came on, but it wouldn't charge the scooter. As a result, I couldn't get out of the apartment. I thought I needed a new charger, which would have cost $65 and taken a week to get here. Dwight had a used charger he could have sold me for $40, but instead he diagnosed the problem over the phone and told me to buy a particular fuse from Radio Shack,and what to do with it. Problem solved for $2.15! The next time I need repairs on any of my equipment, I'm going to City Wheelchairs. read more

CityWheelchairs - Here's my awesome wheelchair that City Wheelchairs help get!! You guys are great!! - Mobility Equipment Sales & Services Near Me - San Francisco, California

Vendor City Wheelchairs (CW) came through for me. I approached them, seeking a SmartDrive and a chair, which would be my first purchased wheelchair, to go with it. CW offered me a SmartDrive MX2+ and Quickie Q7, provided they got insurance authorization. Owner Dwight later explained WHY he feels solid tires make for happier customers, heard why I felt air-filled (in other words, pneumatic) tires were for me, and accommodated me. I understand Bryan, my ATP at CW, had to work really hard (and so did I) to get my insurance to cover (instead of the power wheelchair I qualified for but didn't want) an E0986 and K5, that is, authorization for HCPCS codes E0986 (rim power assist) and K0005 (ultralight chair) (and a few more for accessories) - so they could supply the MX2+ and Q7. CW, like all DME vendors, have to work within what I see as a sick, twisted purchasing scheme that defies logic. It's clear that facilitating or even allowing the *patient* to make an informed DME (Durable Medical Equipment) purchase - one that best meets their needs (given the reimbursement rates insurance pays, and what's for sale at what prices)- is NOT one of the goals of the 'system'. I wanted to and found it's thus a massive undertaking - the fantastically messed up, unnecessarily huge process of making a reasonably informed DME purchase. It includes learning (that is, figuring out, largely on my own) what to ask, look for and think about, recognizing that the insurer's scheme (which prevents and forbids working with more than one vendor at a time) is designed to *prevent* comparison shopping, learning what kind of wheelchair features and and power assist I wanted, finding good sources for that info, getting a prescription, getting fitted, getting insurance authorization, trying out a chair, and deciding what chair I want, getting the specs of the chair purchase order, discussing any changes desired, and much more. Looking back, I didn't think or talk quite enough about the many customization choices that go into placing an order for a custom ultralight wheelchair. I wish I'd put even more time. I wish I had the regular pneumatic tires, rather than the loud, heavier off-road ones I OK'd. I ended up removing both arm rests, and [hope to/wish I could] lighten the chair more by removing the whole structure they connected to. I replaced the side guards with Velcro straps I connected to the chair between the mid-thigh and mid-back parts of the chair. Lighter! I was surprised that the chair, overall, isn't any narrower than the standard steel Drive "Blue Streak", in fact, its nearly 1" wider, even though the seat width is 1" narrower, because of a 3º camber and unnecessarily wide axle (!). I wish I'd insisted on bigger caster wheels. I'm happy with most of the choices I made - the color(orange), camber(3º), main tire type (pneumatic), type(rigid), brand, model, etc. I wonder if I would be happier/have a lighter chair if I'd gone with the Freestyle Backrest System - I got confused and thought the backrests all connected to the same standard vertical bars, and so asked for a lighter-weight option given those bars - a Tension Adjustable back. I ended up going with CW instead of other vendors including WoB - Wheelchairs of Berkeley - wobwob.com and WoSM - Wheelchairs of San Mateo -wcsmshop@mac / wheelchairtech.net. I hope the ongoing support is good. read more

It takes a remarkable business and a remarkable person to turn a situation as awful as getting a mobility device into a pleasurable experience -- and that is exactly what Dwight does at City Wheelchairs. After I had ankle surgery and found myself unable to walk for several months, I was immersed into the world of durable medical equipment and medical supply stores. In the Bay Area, most of these stores and suppliers are overpriced with apathetic employees and difficult payment terms (nobody will bill insurance). Then I happened to stumble across Dwight. Although his primary business is wheelchairs, he carries a variety of knee walkers for those with non weight bearing situations. Dwight brought a particular knee walker over to my place but then offered to get a different one because he felt it suited me better. Within the hour he was back with a different walker (Invacare) that was incredible. if I stuck with the other one I would not have been nearly as mobile. Thanks to Dwight, I can now go to the gym, buy groceries and do lots of other things that I would've been unable to do on crutches or with an inferior product. He truly has given independence back to me. And he billed my insurance directly. On top of all this, Dwight is the kindest, most thoughtful person in the business that I have encountered. The owner, Dwight, seems to delight in helping his customers and he made my trip to his office a delight as well. My husband's Transport Chair (7 mos. old) was getting very difficult for me to take him out in. The front wheels were getting stuck in a side-way position making it difficult to navigate. The original store owner I purchased the chair from just gave me the run around didn't fix the chair. I went on-line and found Dwight, owner of City Wheelchairs. After going to his office and explaining the problem to him, he agreed to look at the chair and see what he could do. Long story, short he tightened a few pins, straightened a bar, and lifted the foot paddles up a notch. The chair is almost like new again and I am a 'Happy Camper". I have been a customer of City Wheelchairs for six years. The staff and service are the BEST! It is so much easier to deal with and to support a local business especially when they give terrific service. I just had my chair totally overhauled and they did a great job...better than new with an upgraded motor. They handled the paperwork for me and have been great over the entire time I have been their customer. Phone calls are returned promptly and the emergency service, although I haven't used it, is very reassuring. read more

For 20 years I've used several local companies for having my electric chairs serviced as well with receiving new ones too. My last 2 chairs were supplied and serviced through City Wheelchairs. Yesterday, one of their technicians arrived on time, changed both batteries, front and rear coaster wheels and the two main drive wheels in a little over an hour. He really deserves a "pat on the back" or a "that a boy" or a pay raise!" He was kind, well mannered and definitely knew what he was doing. Between my interactions on the telephone and their service technician's quite apparent knowledge of these machines, City Wheelchairs gets a 10 on my service rating. I highly recommend their knowledge of electric chair providers. Very professional. They even did all the paperwork with my Dr's office, MediCare and MediCal. I called them to ask a simple question about the difference push rims for my manual chair and they had no clue. The girl who answered the phone and she did sound like a girl not a woman kept saying, "Excuse me what kind of chair do you have. No I don't know anything about the parts. I have to ask a tech." I have to wonder about a place that would hire someone who doesn't know anything about wheelchair parts at a wheelchair store. read more
