I normally love going to the Civic and have always had positive experiences there, which is why this situation was disappointing. Today I came in with my aunt, who had a service dog in training for veterans. The dog was well-behaved and remained under her control the entire time. He tugged on the leash a couple of times, but each time my aunt quickly corrected it and put him into a sit-stay, keeping him calm and under control. Nothing he did was disruptive or noticeable to others. When we went to check out, the worker was extremely rude and told me that the dog should not be brought back until he was better trained. This was frustrating for several reasons. First, service dogs in training in South Dakota have the same public access rights as fully trained service dogs. Second, the dog did not cause any problems. Third, it was not even my dog, and I was not handling him in the store, so any concerns should have been addressed directly to my aunt, who was the handler, rather than speaking to me about it. This dog is regularly trained by a professional and attends weekly training with someone who works with police dogs, so he is very well-behaved and actively in training to serve retired veterans. I have seen negative reviews about the Civic before but had never experienced anything but kindness until today, which is why this interaction stood out. Because of this experience, I am now hesitant to return to the Civic and cannot recommend it to individuals who have or rely on a service animal. People with service animals deserve to feel welcomed, respected, and treated fairly, and this interaction did not reflect that standard. I hope management takes this seriously and ensures staff are properly educated on service dog rights and respectful communication moving forward read more

Everything is really cheap and good quality. Highly recommend (even over Walmart) for household goods, clothes, home decor, etc. I'd only recommend other places for electronics or food. read more

Great prices, worth checking out if you wanna kill some time. The drop off hours are not long enough or often enough. Year after year the biggest hassle by far. Two days a week for only a few hours. Considering this is a business that relies on people being able to drop items off for resale, two days a week is ridiculous. I've been shopping here for YEARS never had a bad experience, I always find something I didn't know I needed. It was a great place to go to buy things for my first apartment lots of cooking utensils, nice dishes, silverware, fabric, books, clothes, wall decor the list goes on... they also have deals a lot if you check out the Facebook page. The Civ really is a great place for our community! It makes me sad seeing all the bad reviews for dropping off donations. The employees are just doing their job, even though your donations are appreciated as they help get things to people who need them they shouldn't have to deal with bullies. I personally have never had an issue with drop offs, sometimes in bad weather or in the busy seasons you might have to wait but its because they have a lot of drop offs or they had to put their coat and gloves on because it's cold! Just go at the listed times of drop off if you'd rather not wait take your donations somewhere with a drop box like Sioux Falls or Sioux City. Whatever you do just be kind! read more

I don't shop here, but the donation process is indeed exceptionally rude and painful. Today, for example, I stopped by at 10:52 am (unexpectedly a bit early). Head people inside, rang the bell, no answer. At 10:58.5 (!), this guy comes walking out and tells me that they are not open yet (?!!!), and instead, start fidgeting with stuff. I tell him that I'm really busy, trying to catch a flight (AND dropping off name brands, although I didn't tell him that). He tells me that if I just leave stuff, he'll trash it because of rules, yada yada. I ask him, does it really matter that it's 1-2 minute early?! I'm trying to GIVE you people something for FREE!! He goes, "If you were working here, it may matter, AND TO ME IT MATTERS." Mentally ill, clearly. Just don't. In the future, I'll just fly my stuff back to a main city and donate there, where they'll happy thank you! How moronic! read more

This is a well-laid-out store with low-priced merchandice. The reason I give it one star is the way I have observed the manager mistreat those in the back who try to help people with their donations. The sign says they stop taking donations at 4. I made an effort to get there early. Imagine how insulted I felt when I saw another customer attempt to drop off donations at 4:20. The person out back kindly said donation times were over. This other customer had the biggest spoiled brat tantrum. If I could make it on time, surely this person could have. Then, adding insult to injury, the manager reprimanded the staff, and let the jerk drop off his donation. As a customer who came on time, I felt insulted and devalued. I won't give this store my business. I am not from the area anyway. read more

This is a very good little thrift store with reasonable prices. It is clean, organized and generally smells good. The size of it is nice - not too big and not too small. The staff is helpful most of the time, and they stick by the times that are posted, which is good. They also run good sales, and have special shopping days, which add variety and fun to our visits there. The building does not have alot of storage space so I think the employees and volunteers do an amazing job with sorting over so much stuff each season. And the best part is that the store's profits are given back to the Vermillion community in various ways. I enjoy shopping at the Civ better than at Wal-mart! read more

Not worth one star. The lady at the counter is so rude and snippy she always seems extremely impatient and acts like its a chore to have to help you. Around closing time and not one minute over 5pm. They made a older lady leave her cart of stuff when she came to check out at 5pm this dirty lady with tattoos and dark hair told this poor old woman "Next time listen when we say where closing at 5 and check out your stuff and leave" this woman had to leave her cart of clothes and was rushed out the door along with my few things they said they do not work after 5 com back tomorrow and find your items if you want they would not hold them and she called someone to return the cart of stuff back to where it belongs. I don't recommend this place to anyone it smells dirty the floors are trip hazards with sudden drops where I've twisted my ankle a few times they don't have these spots marked with warnings either. I got off work and drove like a bat outta H to get there on time. I had several nice winter coats to drop off! I pulled up at one minute to four! There was already an employee out back so I didn't have to ring the bell! He pointed to the sign and said we are closed! I told him that I had a few coats and they would only take a second to take inside! He had to go back inside anyway so why couldn't he have taken the coats! He said No! I got mad and he started laughing at me and making fun of me! I have always spent a lot of money there and took a ton of items there! From now on I go to the New to You and the Good Will in Yankton! Your employees will have to find someone else to make fun of!I I could understand if I was really a lot after four but it wasn't! Heavens forbid they make a one minute exception!
