I came across CJ Physical Therapy & Pilates purely by chance, and I can say with certainty that it has completely restored my quality of life in less than 3 months time. After suffering from severe back pain for almost 3 years, I followed the general route of seeking care through an orthopedic office (Access Sports Medicine). This resulted in wasting thousands of dollars and valuable time (4+ months), with no results or improvement. After months of expensive and ineffective PT, I was told steroid injections or surgery would be the next best option with little to no confidence from my physician that the recommended course of treatment would result in improvements. I am SO grateful that I found CJ PT before I went through with the steroid injections as it could have resulted in a vicious cycle of injections, never actually solving the root of the problem. I learned more from CJ PT than I ever did from my physician; mechanical pain is different from chemical pain and should not be treated the same, herniations can heal with corrective movements, and steroid injections can mask the pain leading to further injury. The team at CJ PT was incredibly informative, educated me on ways to protect my back and help it heal and slowly introduced strength exercises to help get me back to baseline. Dr. Jill is phenomenal. She gave me the tools I needed to begin healing my body and got me back to playing with my kids and reintroducing activity back into my life. I am not even certain I can do this review justice but here goes. This place literally gave me my life back. I broke my femur of my left leg clean through the bone. Doctors stuck a titanium rod in the leg and screwed it in. I was completely unable to walk for a month. I had a crutch but even basic movement was painful. I was stuck at home, unable to even work, with my parents having to stay at my house to take care of me like I was still a child. Very sad times. I tried finding a PT, even going as far as asking my doctors for recommendations and referrals. I ended up at a few places that wanted to simply put me on a basic run-of-the-mill program. They weren't interested in the specifics of my injury and what hurt and what didn't. I almost gave up. I found this place via Yelp coincidentally. It had great reviews and for very good reason. The very first visit I did I met Carrie and her team. She spent time exploring the specifics of the pain and problems I had and over the other visits crafted a program for me that helped. I showed up on crutches, pain with every step I took for over a month. Within a week I was off the crutches. The breadth of knowledge of this team in this area was simply astounding. I could show up to a visit, explain what was hurting or causing me discomfort and they would craft a routine for me on the spot that helped immediately. In no time I was doing targeted leg raises, squats and stretches. I can proudly say today, 6 months after completely breaking my leg in two, I can walk like a regular human being. After googling PT's in my area I found CJ's. I have tired physical therapy 6 times for chronic neck and shoulder pain I've had since childhood. CJ PT has a different approach and intention that is evident from your first appointment. I have hope my pain will be resolved, something I haven't had in years. I was greatly disappointed in CJ Physical Therapy and Pilates. I came there shortly after partially tearing my meniscus, and was concerned with the level of activity I would be doing in Pilates. I had never done Pilates, and my concerns were glossed over. The owner, a Physical Therapist, said I should be "fine", but that was far from true. I couldn't do 90% of the Reformer exercises, and the little I did complete aggravated my injury. It went against the very reason I went to CJ Physical Therapy and Pilates, for synergy and a greater level of guidance due to my injury. When I requested a refund or a "comp" visit for what I felt was a wasted session, I was flatly and unreasonably refused. The attitude of this business is that their Physical Therapists are superior to everyone else, because they don't take insurance and have to fill out insurance codes for payment. They say they can "fix" you if your current physical therapist can't. This is all a bunch of crap. I'm sorry I got locked into a pre-paid Pilates plan with this practice. While the Pilates instructors are great, I can't say the same for the owner of the practice. read more

Dealing with long-term chronic pain is miserable. After nearly a decade of seeing every specialty doctor from orthopedic, to neurologist, to rhumatologists, and many, many sugeries, I was referred to a "pain doctor". The recommendation was that the only option other than opiods was to have a spinal cord stimulator installed to provide relief from neck, spine and sciatic pain. I was concerned htat a SCS would be masking pain and its root cause. A friend suggested that I try Carrie and her team. I researched their methodology and decided it wass based on real science and that I would tgive it a shot as my last chance at avoiding surgery. Within a few months, my neck pain was completely relieved. I can now actually turn my head when driving and if pain returns, I know the corrective to make it go away. My back and sciatic pain are a complex problem caused from multiple knee surgies that were never rehabed properly. I have had seven operationis on my knees and have partial knee implants on both legs. I was making great progress with posture, stride, flexibility and pain relief when I damage the implant on one of my left knee. You just can't make this up!! With all that, I am much improved from when I started treatment, and we are still working on corrective movements that will eventually eliminate even all symptoms. I cannot say enough about the professionalism and effectiveness of Carrie, Jill and Holly as therapists. As a team, they are outstanding. They listen intently to my symptoms and their acute observasion skills of my anatomical movements leads to treatments and solutons that I would not have believed possible. I so appreciation their knowledge and skill sets, and am grateful that I found them before I conceded to more invasive surgery. read more

When I went to CJ Physical Therapy & Wellness based on the recommendation of a co-worker, I had serious lower back and hip pain. I was tired of having the recurring episodes and tired of not finding a permanent solution, always relying on my chiropractor to "fix" me. Carrie helped me to "fix" myself with some great tricks and tools that I can now use on my own when these flare ups occur, while continuing to use my chiropractor for maintenance. She showed me where my weaknesses are and is helping me to strengthen those areas so that my flare ups are less frequent. BACKGROUND: I have had so many ankle sprains and foot issues I tried PT at a place in Portsmouth around 2013/2014- I was not impressed. The process was slow - no one was paying attention - I had no idea what I was doing. I quit. Due to a work related issue another PT was recommended to me by a colleague for carpel tunnel syndrome and had such great success with my wrist pain - I started working on my ankles. I wasn't seeing results, money was tight so I stopped going. All those ankle sprains amounted to a cyst and bone fragment that needed to be surgically removed from my right ankle. After my 2015 surgery things were going great, until I experienced the worst sprain of my life in early 2016. After my sprain, my surgeon had recommended I go back to PT for maybe 3 weeks, I once again returned to that same PT and went once a week for MONTHS with NO RESULTS. It had been over a year since I had been there for my ankle and after the initial consultation I was expected to remember old exercises I had done in 2014, pre-surgery. I felt foolish but did my best do I didn't look silly. Basically I went in, alongside other patients, wasted time on exercises I was doing wrong, and then the PT either used an ultrasound or e-stim (electrical stimulation) on the swelling of my ankle. When the e-stim was used, the PT was paying attention to other patients. Both made no difference and had no lasting effect on me. I gave up, I cancelled my last appointment. I quit. Again. I figured I would just have to live in pain - no more hiking, no more running, fine. Whatever. CURRENT: I know that was a long background but I needed to show my apprehension as to why I cancelled my first appointment with Carrie. My Chiropractor, Dr Beebe recommended Carrie. Carrie and I talked through email then had my consultation over the phone. I cancelled my first appointment. I had wasted so much time getting nowhere with my current PT I didn't believe someone else could possibly help me. I felt like I was destined to live with the pain I felt every day and restrict the activities I did. Carrie called me, listened and talked me through my worries - I was so wrong. I have been going to Carrie once a week for 8 weeks and ALREADY feel 98.99999% better. I can't believe it. Carrie works with me one-on-one for a full hour. There is no one else in the studio at the same time, except maybe her pup which is pretty awesome. Carrie gave me exercises to do at home that I do not dread doing, exercises she had taught me and made sure I was doing correctly. She made sure to correct me when I came in one week wondering what was going on - I was doing one of the stretches wrong that week. While I am in her studio she corrects my posture and makes me be mindful of the way my body is moving and how that affects my ankle. She pinpoints why my ankle hurts where it does and what we need to do to correct that. The whole body is connected; it's not JUST my ankle that needed correction. All that time I wasted before, I was making my injury worse because no one was paying attention to what I was doing. I was doing it all wrong. For months. Did I mention I went from feeling pretty crummy and in a lot of pain to 98.99999% better in EIGHT WEEKS? For those of you that have given up, that think you can live with the pain, that stopped doing those activities that you actually enjoyed - make an appointment with Carrie.
