As a dancer with no studio, finding affordable practice space is a common challenge. On average,…read moremost studios charge $30-60 an hour for renting a space. This is in addition to the challenge of scheduling times available for use. Fly Loft used to be ridiculously affordable in the past, having a special nonprofit rate of $15 per hour. Recently, they have had to increase their rates to $25 an hour which is still reasonable, but it's getting closer to what other for profit studios charge. I'm not sure what the reasoning behind the increase is but I'm thinking it might be pandemic or staff shortage related. Overall, Fly Loft has been such a life saver! All the staff I've had to deal with (3 different ones) are extremely friendly, attentive and accommodating. It's great to have a smooth process for scheduling recurring practices. Mallory is usually the one that is working when we use the space and she's super helpful, whether sharing the wi-fi password or opening the mirror curtains for us. In terms of the space, they have three rehearsal spaces available, all with sprung floors which offer increased support for joints and muscles and reduces fatigue in the legs when leaping/jumping, etc. They each have mirrors on the east wall, acoustic sound bars around the room and a speaker system with plug input. The only thing that varies between the spaces is size. The first space is the biggest one, with capacity for 150 people. The second space has a capacity for 120 people and the third space is the smallest with 80 max occupancy. They also have a conference room for up to 16 guests and other rental options like projectors, screens, tables, etc.

I'm…read morepretty sure that this is where the Tulsa Symphony offices are, but also lots of people use Fly Loft for rehearsals or for an audition space. So I say it's "multipurpose in a weird way" because it's a place where people work, but that other people rent out to use too. If it were me working there, I'd probably get distracted by other people coming in to practice different stuff, but I guess it works. And to be fair, I'm sure the building is probably bigger than what I think it is/ what I've seen of it, because I've never really run into any of the office spaces/ Symphony workers before. Or maybe that's just because I've only been during non traditional working hours? I don't know, but long story short, it seemingly hasn't been an issue to have it be used for different purposes. I've been there for different things probably 4 or 5 times. I always think it's nice. When you walk in, there's a front desk, an elevator, and stairs. When you go up the stairs, it's kind of like a hallway that has a few different rooms. On the right side are the offices, which seem fairly small but I haven't actually looked inside, and on the left side are the more rehearsal space type rooms. I think there's only 2 or 3 of them, and I believe they are about the same size? Black dance floors with one wall as a full mirror. That's about it, so it's pretty basic/ simple in the rooms themselves, like most other similar spaces. One of the cool things to me about Fly Loft is that they have a little kitchen that you can (I think?) use. Well, I've never used it myself nor have I seen anyone else use it while I've been there, so maybe it's only for the people who actually work there, but I can't imagine that that's the case. I just think having that is a nice little extra element to have. It's almost kind of comforting to have it there. It makes it feel like a more "official" space too. The only real thing I don't like about Fly Loft is the parking situation. It's downtown (so, enough said!) and they don't really have their own lot, just a few spaces right out front, and even those I don't believe are free most of the time. Main reason for 4 stars instead of 5, though I know it's not really THEIR fault. It also isn't able to hold TONS of people (because other than the rooms it's kind of just a wide-ish hallway) but it's good for what it's good for. Overall a cool, in-the-city type of atmosphere, so I like having rehearsals here... again, I just wish I didn't have to stress about where to park!

I have attended various events (weddings, community events, dance socials) in this building and its such a wonderful space. The staff is wonderful to work with. They're responsive and helpful in every way. There are various rooms available for rent depending on what you need and a full kitchen. The atrium has a stage and lots of rooms for tables and chairs (provided by the center). You can choose the layout and there's also audio available if you want to connect your laptop. We have been very happy with our experience using the space for our Latin dance socials. There's a beautiful view of downtown, lots of natural light and very spacious option for events. Nonprofits also get a discounted rental fee.

I chose this venue for my sister's baby shower, and unfortunately, our experience was very…read moredisappointing. When booking, we discussed renting the downstairs space because we had elderly and handicapped guests who could not easily access stairs. Based on the listing photos and our text conversation with the owner, we understood we were renting a different area than what we actually received. When we arrived, both my sister and I immediately realized the space was not what we had expected. The area we were given was the entryway/lobby area, not what we believed we had reserved based on the listing and our communications. When we expressed our concerns, the owner initially acknowledged there had been a misunderstanding regarding the space and even discussed refunding us before the event. However, with guests already traveling and arriving--including family from out of state--and less than two hours before the baby shower, canceling simply was not a realistic option. We chose to continue because we wanted my sister to have her baby shower, not because the issues had been resolved. Unfortunately, the room itself was only part of the problem. Our contract allowed us access before the event so we could decorate. However, when we arrived, the venue was still being cleaned. We were unable to begin decorating on time because the owners were still cleaning the rented space. They remained in the venue through the beginning of our event, further delaying setup and making preparations much more stressful than they should have been. The building was also very warm. The air conditioning had not been running before we arrived, and despite being turned on later, the room never cooled below 77°F during the event. With a room full of guests, it was noticeably uncomfortable. After the event, I reached out in hopes of finding a reasonable resolution. Rather than addressing my concerns about the delayed access, the venue not being event-ready, or the temperature, the conversation focused almost entirely on the room selection. The owner also listed several "upgrades" as compensation, including setting up tables and chairs, upgraded chairs, and access to a small private room typically used as a bridal suite. However, none of those were services we requested, and they did not address the actual issues we experienced. In fact, we had to rearrange the tables ourselves because the setup interfered with decorating. Guests began arriving while the owners were still on-site finishing the cleaning, which meant we never had the uninterrupted setup time we had reserved. What was especially frustrating was the inconsistency in communication. Initially, the owner acknowledged there had been a misunderstanding regarding the space. Later, she denied there had been any misunderstanding at all and instead stated it was entirely our fault. She also repeatedly claimed we had been offered an opportunity to tour the venue before booking, but after reviewing our text messages, I could not find any such offer before the event. This review is not because I wanted a larger room for a lower price. It is because I expected the venue I rented to be accurately represented, clean, ready at the agreed-upon time, and reasonably comfortable for my guests. Those expectations were not met. The baby shower itself turned out beautifully because our family worked hard to make the best of the situation, but the venue created unnecessary stress on what should have been a special day. I hope this feedback encourages improvements in communication, clearer descriptions of the rental spaces, and ensuring venues are completely cleaned and ready before renters arrive.

On the way home from our 49th Hammond Batts Family Reunion, we stopped in Tulsa to visit family, and I knew it was the perfect opportunity to bring the kids to Greenwood to walk the streets of what was once known as Black Wall Street and to truly connect with our legacy. Let me tell you nothing compares to being here. The Greenwood Cultural Center is a powerful, sacred space that preserves the brilliance, resilience, and tragedy of one of the most prosperous Black communities in American history. At its height, Black Wall Street was home to over 10,000 Black residents and boasted more than 600 Black-owned businesses, including 21 churches, 21 restaurants, 30 grocery stores, a hospital, a library, a bank, two movie theaters, and even a private airplane. Yes, you read that right a private plane in the 1920s! In just 18 brutal hours during the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921, an estimated 1,200 homes were burned, and over 35 square blocks of the Greenwood District were reduced to ashes by a white mob. The destruction caused an estimated $1.5 to $2 million in property loss at the time which would be over $30 million today. The human and economic toll was immeasurable, yet the story was buried for decades. Ms. Rebecca, our guide, brought the experience to life. She was brilliant, funny, and incredibly knowledgeable the kind of person who makes history stick. We later found out her mother has worked at the center for over 30 years, and that love and dedication radiated from every corner of the space. Her storytelling made us laugh, cry, and reflect. This place is not just a museum. It's a promise to never forget and to keep building. I'm already making plans to return for Juneteenth, which I hear is unforgettable here. If you're anywhere near Tulsa, even for a layover, make your way to the Greenwood Cultural Center. Bring your kids, your elders, your friends. This is not just Black history this is American history. Once a year hospice volunteers have a fundraiser in which they sell tickets at $100 per person for…read morean all you can eat and drink dinner. The food is provided free by local restaurants, so the cost of the food isn't taken out of the $100 donation. The entire donation is tax deductible. The highlights of the buffet are oysters and beer, but there's a large variety of offerings from restaurants, including meatballs from Roosevelt's and bread pudding from Charleston. There's wine and pasta and fancy appetizers from a variety of local eateries. Many people donate things for a silent auction and a raffle, which increases the amount raised for hospice. It's a fun evening and a good cause. I hope you will consider being a part of it next year. Unless we die suddenly, we are likely to need the services of hospice eventually. This is a way of giving it forward and having a great time doing it.
