We've been taking both our dog and cat to CAC South for the last few years. We have consistently appreciated CAC's approach to both long-term care and acute injuries/illnesses. Our two pets are very different in a vet's office - while one is a cool cucumber, the other suffers from severe anxiety. CAC spends a lot of time getting to know each individual pet to provide the best possible care. They have found ways to successfully treat both of our pets with individualized approaches. We have seen a few of their vets, but Dr. Smith has been a stand out for us. She first saw our cat and we thought she was so fantastic that we switched our dog to her care, as well. We'd be devastated if she ever left the practice! CAC consistently spends the most time in the exam room out of any veterinarian we've seen in the past. CAC's techs and assistants are thoughtful and patient with each individual animal. Our dog is not easy at all to interact with but Dr. Smith has never expressed frustration, instead seeking to find ways to ensure that we can treat her without causing her any undue stress. There have been many vet offices where quality has gone downhill in recent years but CAC's staff and practices continue to give me a lot of confidence. They are also so easy to get a hold of via phone and communicate well via email to answer any outstanding or random questions. Knowing that there's a friendly, competent, and professional staff on the other end of the phone gives me a lot of confidence that we are doing the best thing for our pets and making sure that we don't have to bring our anxious dog in for every small concern we might have. They are a pricey practice - the costs here are sometimes tough to swallow - but we find that their vets are judicious in their recommendation for testing and diagnostics. They generally provide all the options up front and Dr. Smith has never pushed us into expensive or extreme options, always being willing to start with the most sensible and least invasive approach. We really appreciate the excellent care they've provided to our pets and we hope that we will be able to keep both of them within the care of CAC for years to come. read more

While our visit wasn't under good circumstances because Cinnamon, our dog, was sick due to uncontrollable vomiting. The staff was very nice and welcoming. We never felt rushed during our appointment. We had a family friend recommend Dr. Smith, which I'm so happy they did. We appreciated that Dr. Smith didn't order every test under the sun right away but followed a process. She said that if she couldn't figure out what was wrong with Cinnamon with the first test then she would move onto others. There was no need to over charge our family unnecessarily. She also explained everything thoroughly and was extremely patient with us. Unfortunately Cinnamon was an elder dog, 17, and was undergoing kidney failure. She explained his end of life options to us without in a judgement and allowed us the time to process what she was saying. We ended up taking Cinnamon home with us and he passed a couple of days later. A couple of weeks later we got a hand written personalized condolence card from Dr. Smith. (This warmed our hearts!) I know that once we're ready to have another furry friend, we will be taking them here and having Dr. Smith as our vet. Our only regret is that we didn't take Cinnamon here sooner. read more

I love CAC for my pet medical needs. My two seniors received excellent care and attention prior to passing--switched to this Vet because of how great they are with seniors and fearful pets. My current pets are both special needs behavior dogs and CAC goes above and beyond to provide excellent fear free care and the highest levels of customer service. I never have an issue getting an appointment--I am also happy to see any of the wonderful vets as they are all excellent. I personally have had amazing experiences with Drs. Fitzgerel, Galoor, Smith, and Taylor. I have also had excellent experiences with all the techs on tech appointments (their techs have really saved me in navigating some of the trickier caretaking protocols). We usually go to their Clarendon location, but was sent here because they are updating their scheduling system there. First time here and had a good impression. First of all, the wait time is much less. In Clarendon, we often had to wait outside forever (30-60 minutes, imagine!) and we are always on time for our appointment. Here, in the South location, we arrived on time and they saw our dog on time. No wait. They also allowed you inside (socially distanced and masked) which is much better. You no longer have to wait outside and talk to the doctor on the phone and wait for them to come outside to pick up the dog. The office looked new and very clean. There is a scale to weigh your dog in the lobby. The office is attached to a high end apartment and Harris Teeter. Parking is part of the apartment and Harris Teeter underground garage (with spots marked for clients of the animal care). They offer WiFi and power outlets in the lobby read more

These folks were great with my rescue pittie. They accommodated his fears and Dr Fitzgerel was wonderful

I took my extremely young kitten here for her first check up after finding her outside. Despite her having a superficial wound on her ear and bad breath(which was the reason for the appointment) She was a normal curious active playful kitten. The first doctor noticed the wound wasn't concerned but did prescribe medications for worms/parasites to be proactive since I found her outside. My kitten handled the small dose well based on her weight as she was only 1lb. Based on the fecal test results, she needed to take the dewormer longer. A different doctor who never seen my kitten prescribed the same dewormer but increased dose for whatever reason. Immediately when I administered the increased dose my kitten had an intense and scary adverse reaction causing me to have to rush her to an emergency vet. When I got to the vet I learned CAC told the emergency vet that I denied care for my kitten and that's why I was bringing her there which was not true. The emergency vet stabilized my kitten but she was still showing overdose symptoms. The next day CAC asked me to bring her in to evaluate her. Another doctor then started to gaslight me into believing her symptoms could possibly be rabies due to the wounds even though she had the wounds prior to adverse reaction and the first doctor wasn't concerned about the wounds nor did she have any symptoms until after administered the increased dose. The doctor told me that if she had rabies she would die within 10 days. My kitten made it pass the 10 days and was eating and drinking water which doesn't happen if an animal has rabies. However, to save face for their mistake they decided to report her for possible rabies to cover the mistake of the doctor. After a week the adverse reactions subsided. My kitten is still alive and drinking water. She returned to her normal self once the excessive amount of dewormer was metabolize out of her system. It was never rabies just too much medication in her little body. The worst experience I've ever had in my entire life with a vet and I have owned 10 cats over a span of time in my life. I understand mistakes and accidents happen but it was the attempt to gaslight me on what I experienced and witnessed with the change in my kitten's behavior after administering the increased dose of dewormer med and how the whole situation was handled was very disappointing and disheartening. read more

Honored to give the newest branch of Clarendon Animal Care their first (of what I'm sure will be many) 5 star reviews. When your dog wakes you up whining at 4am in the morning, there's a few things that could be wrong. Often it's because they need to go to the restroom, unfortunately last night it was a little more serious. French Toast exited her cage and shook her head, flopping her ears back and forth, and then continued to walk around shaking her head. I knew from previous Pet Googling that this was likely an ear infection. I took her out... she didn't go potty and brought her back, letting her sleep at the foot of my bed for the rest of the night so she could walk around more freely to shake her head if need be. And she definitely took me up on the offer, for about 15 minutes or so before she finally settled down. Enter Clarendon Animal Care: I called up to see if they could squeeze my puppy in sometime today and they were able to wedge me in the schedule for a 4pm appointment at their newest "South" location (also in Arlington). I've been going to their North location since Toast was a pup as I spent a good deal of time in the area and it truly was one of the highest rated Vets around. For reference, the older more established location has 129 reviews and a solid 5 star average. And I know exactly why. The reception desk is warm, inviting, excited to see your dog, remembers your dog's name, and the doctors are everything you would want a Vet to be. They are serious, knowledgeable, gentle, and don't try and rush you by any means. This new location is 100 percent consistent with the old one. I went in to a very warm reception Covid Updates: They'll have you call to let you know that you're there. Now you can go in, they temp you, and you're allowed into the exam room with your pup. The exam rooms are small, so the Vet Tech talks to you from the entryway to the back office to maintain social distancing. Of course masks are required, they have a gallon jug of hand sanitizer out. And this is location quite clean. The Vet Tech was as sweet as can be. I was able to get a few questions I had on my mind answered. She did a thorough consult before she passed off the reigns to the Doctor. And the Doctor was warm, concerned, and very thorough about the exam explaining to me what I needed to do. Unfortunately, I was right. Toast has an ear infection. So I'll be giving her medicine in her ears for the next two weeks. But everything from setting up the appointment, initial consult, and seeing the doctor was smooth as can be. I would highly recommend it to anyone in the area. And if you're not, isn't it worth the drive your best friend in the whole wide world. This location is located on the bottom of a large apartment complex with a Harris teeter on the bottom. If you enter through the entrance on S. George Mason, there's ample parking available. If you accidentally pass it (alla me) and enter through the other Harris Teeter entrance, weaving through the garage can be quite confusing. And the signs that try to "point" you in the direction of Clarendon Animal Care are quite unclear. And yes... I put point in quotations for a reason. When you find it, the elevator has a sign that clearly says- use this elevator/entrance for Clarendon Animal Care. The most unpleasant part of the experience was leaving... not because I wanted to stay... but I had opened the elevator to a large dog who had just gotten sick in the middle of the elevator. The woman owner was very embarrassed and really had not much she could do (and even stated so). Another sick puppy going to see Dr. Carter I presume. The most warm and welcoming staff i've had since adopting my dog. As a first time dog owner, I have a million questions before, during and after my appointments. They've been nothing but helpful each time I call. Im sure this is a busy location, but it never feels like it. I feel so at ease and calm when checking in. The team takes the time catch up with how things are going and answer my questions. And not to mention all the quality time they put into giving the love and attention to my pup. The office staff and vet techs are very young and immature, losing stool samples, not patching up my kitty well leaving her to bleed all over the bottom of the carrier, giving me dirty looks, and yelling at me. They can't listen at all. They need a re-do. read more

People there are very nice and it's very clean, but after having called to specifically say my cat needed to have a cortisone shot and have his nails clipped, they didn't tell me they don't do either of those things. One of his scratches was infected, so they gave him an antibiotic shot for that, and for medical reasons, they prefer to give oral prednisone, which would be for weeks. The problem is if he were an easy cat to med and snip nails, I wouldn't need help. While injected cortisone can cause problems, he generally only needs 1 to 2 shots a year. And, if you think 2 minutes of nail clipping is going to stress him, weeks of meds are not going to be better. I did get his yearly shots thinking that as long as I was there, I might as well. The bill came to almost $400, and I still will have to take him elsewhere. On the whole, I understand that they are a "no fear" clinic, but it's just not a good fit for us. read more

I was referred to the urgent care at the South location after my dog got chocolate poisoning. Dr. Lockhart and the clinician worked swiftly and were able to get my dog to vomit out the chocolate WITHIN ONE HOUR of ingestion. I am very grateful. Solid COVID management. I was required to have my temperature checked before I entered the facility. I appreciate being able to go into the clinic with my sick dog. Parking is the same as the Harris Teeter garage. It is not easy for me to post a disparaging review. I've only been to this practice once. I didn't know until I got there they don't trim cat's claws. A few days ago my cat was a attacked and there was a hole (you could see through it) in his backside. He was bleeding and in pain. I contacted 5 ER vets on Sunday and they all said they had an 8 hour wait. On Monday I called this practice and explained to the person who answered that my cat had been attacked, had a hole in his backside and was bleeding. I needed to bring him in, she said there were no appointments for two weeks. I couldn't believe her coldness. There was no "I'm so sorry" it was just no appointments. I fortunately found a vet in Burke who saw my injured kitty. The Vet was empathetic and had a heart. She got me into the Hope Center. Surgery was done and now my sweet kitty is spending his second night in the hospital and it looks like he will mend. I won't come to this practice ever again. I'll drive from Arlington to Burke. The Burke Vet has been calling everyday to check on my kitty I trust her. read more

I thought I would really like this clinic but unfortunately I will NEVER EVER come back! I was incredibly disappointed. I walked in about 15 maybe 20 minutes early because I live a hour and 10 minutes away. Initially I was seated and told I was early which is understandable. I saw everyone that came in after me or the same time as me and were taken back immediately after their pet stepped on the scale. So 1:30 came no one rushed me back or even cared about the pain my dog was in, I sat there for 30 minutes after my appointment time before anyone took me to her room if I could have just left I would have easily walked out but I love the hell out of my dog and I don't want her to be in agony because the clinic was horrible, anyway after I got in the room we still waited for another 10 min before anyone came in. I was highly upset because I couldn't help but to think it was because of my race. I have been discriminated against but this was blatant. Had the person at the front desk told me my vet was running late I probably would have been more understandable but no one communicated that to me. Also this was my first time at this vet so honestly they could have put me with anyone. I really felt uncomfortable in this clinic because other customers were in and out with no problem. I saw one of the staff members go to lunch pet my dog and came back and told the staff I was still waiting. Also upon a gentleman arriving into the room I asked if I would still be paying the same price for the exam because I didn't have contact with anyone until 40 min after my appointment. I was told it would be the same price and I didn't think that was fair so another lady walked in and said she asked and got 20% off of that price which was appreciated. I was quoted a price before I came in and was fine with it because they had to do a wellness check, while the wellness check was happening the vet checked her ears and told me it looked like an infection so she swabbed her and left. The guy came back in and proceeded to tell me the ear exam was an extra $100 smh I told him I wasn't aware and the vet did not tell me that. I didn't understand what the point of the wellness exam if her ears aren't included. I was really baffled and disgusted with this situation. I wasted more time than I should've and still had to drive a hour and 15 minutes back. This was a terrible experience and I wonder if I was a different color would this still have happened? If I could give this clinic 0 stars I would. Not to mention the parking is horrible I'm sure that's not their fault but that didn't help. read more

Have been taking our aging pug to CAC for over a year and cannot say enough good things about this practice that lives up to its "No fear" standards -- that is they provide gentle care for animals who are afraid. They are exceptionally thorough and professional, and have truly made a difference in our pup's quality of life. This is admittedly not free -- state of the art vet care comes at a cost. I love this vet and so does my dog. I got my dog from a rescue and he'd been abused. before moving to Virginia, vet visits were always stressful for him because of fear. While he is still very fearful this place is great at calming him down and they treat him with such love and care. I hope my job keeps me in Virginia just so I can stay at this vet! read more
