My family moved to Arlington in 1989 and have contacted this veterinarian practice multiple times throughout the years, always getting the same abrupt response that they are not taking new patients. No wait list, no suggestion on where to go for good care. It puzzles me how some of these reviews are from clients having been with this vet for 20 years or less. How do they "choose" their patients? We have had many pets throughout the years, luckily found a wonderful vet who has, sadly, just retired, and I'm now on the search for another great vet for our two fur babies. I'm not really sure how to rate this, but just FYI to everyone...I called today and they still aren't taking any new patients due to it being a small practice. Which I understand. They don't have a waitlist and they don't have any recommendations for other places to go too. They will just tell you they don't have any, and to look for others in your area or refer you to the one across the street from them. Super bummed because I loved that they had people who were 10-20 year loyal customers. It says a lot about the business. read more

Northside Vet has great staff and veterinarians. I've been taking my puppy there for the last 6 months and they have always been super accommodating. We've been taking Reggie to see Dr. Adam McClure mainly, but both Dr. Adam and Fiona McClure are caring and helpful. They are very thorough during the exam and spend a lot of time listening and answering questions. They are just genuinely nice people. They are also very flexible when it comes to appointment schedules and work ins. Phone calls have been returned in an extremely timely manner. I especially appreciate the early evening appointments so I don't have to take extra time off from work. All the great service does come at a cost, as the fees are a little high, however, most clinics in Arlington are and I do think that it's worth it. I have been extremely pleased so far. Doctors Adam & Fiona McClure are wonderful! We've been using their services for the past 8 years and couldn't be happier with the level of care and service we've received. They take excellent care of our 2 cats when we're there, always return our calls, and make sure we understand everything before we leave their office. Dr. Adam even called us when he heard that our cat was in the emergency room, and then continued to call for the next few weeks to see how she was doing! They are up-to-date on their readings & make excellent recommendations based on the most current findings in Vet Medicine. However, they are not quick to try unproven or "trendy" methods of treating common cat illnesses such as diabetes and asthma. And, they are quick to correct course is a treatment isn't working. I'd highly recommend them to any "cat person" who wants to see their pet well cared for and treated with dignity and kindness. read more

Even though there are several vets much nearer to our house, I will continue to come to Northside as long as they are there. Everything about this vet is what I was looking for in a vet that was lacking at my old vet (Clocktower Animal Hospital). My aunt who lives in Arlington recommended it to me; she has been taking her dogs to this vet for close to a decade and swears by them--particularly Dr. Hahn. I thought I would give them a try, even though they are farther than I prefer to go. Totally worth it! This vet is the antithesis to the big, polished, factory-style vets so common to this area (like my previous vet, Clocktower) that are cold, unwelcoming and care first and foremost about turning out pets and services to make the most profit possible. At Northside, if you didn't know it, you would think you were at some small-town, local, corner-side vet where everybody knows everybody and treats their pets like their own--the building is modest and unassuming, the staff remember everybody and their pets and could not be more warm or friendly if they tried, the vets are VERY good, experienced and completely reasonable, and the price is REALISTIC (another rarity in this area). When I come to this vet, I truly get the sense that: -the staff and vets care about my pets (dog and cat) -the staff and vets want to give me reasonable, honest and common-sense advice/treatment as their PRIMARY goal, and not to make money as their primary goal -the staff and vets do not want to rip me off--they keep cost in mind and are sensitive to that I never feel here like I have to read-between-the-lines and try to figure out when I may be being scammed and when I'm not--I would trust this place with my pets' lives. When I call to make an appointment, they say, "when would you like to bring the baby in?" Other vets I've used act like they are doing YOU a favor by letting you do business with them. This place is the opposite. They also always manage to find an appointment for me reasonably soon after I call instead of putting me on some waiting list for weeks on end, and they will fit you in for emergencies rather than schlepping you onto some emergency clinic and washing their hands of it, or fitting you in but charging you some ridiculous "emergency fee". They spend as much time with you as you need and answer every question you have; you never get rushed out or made to feel like your concerns or requests of explanation are an inconvenience or unimportant. I value the quality of the experience and care I/my pets get at Northside--expertise, time, attentiveness, honesty--over the song and dance you get at other vets (pretty building, shiny and impressive facilities, reviews in magazines, waiting lists for appointments because they are oh-so-popular, etc.) At Northside they treat their customers with respect and decency and in return it seems to me they have VERY loyal customers. I have only been bringing my dog and cat here for a few months, but my aunt has taken 2 dogs here for almost a decade and only had positive things to say...I feel confident I will stay with this vet until I am no longer in the area because I trust them, which is the most important factor to me. read more

I don't know the other vet in the practice, but I know Adam and Fiona McClure, and they're amazing. We were referred to them by a friend when we first moved here 5.5 years ago. Generally, our experience is that they're thorough, thoughtful and absolutely love what they do. They're so kind to their patients (2- and 4-legged), and take as much time as required They're pretty busy and might not always be available to take a call with a question right away, but they always get back to you, even if it's after hours before they head home. This was luck on my part that they happened to check email, but I just emailed after closing on Saturday with a concern about one of my dogs, and they happened to check email and replied right away with advice and instructions on what to do -- and more importantly, they put our minds at ease. We've been taking our animals to Dr. Adam McClure for almost 8 yrs. Adam took care of my friend's dog who had a medical emergency and referred us to South Paws due to the urgency of the situation. He called on a regular basis to find out how the dog was doing and if he could be of any help. Adam has always taken great courses of action with my pets and doesn't over recommend a lot of treatments that won't add value to your pet's well being. I'ved checked out prices of other clinics in the area, and Northside is the least expensive. No pet clinics are cheap, but at least you have some comfort in knowing your pet is getting great care at the best value. I've also been to some clinics that won't process 1-800-Petmeds prescription requests. I definitely appreciate that Northside does! Saves me lots of time in getting prescriptions. read more

Calls are returned promptly and professional advice is often given by phone which saves the long drive from Fairfax. When our chocolate lab became one of our family members we consulted with Adam McClure for a dog trainer. He recommended Keri Putonen with Unleashed Abilities. Keri also uses Northside. After reading all of the wonderful reviews, I called today to make an appointment for my 9-1/2 year old who is suffering from a terrible skin condition only to be told they are not accepting new clients. I emailed their administrator and suggested they post that information on their website. I have not had luck with the Falls Church hospital I was taking him too. Very disappointed. UPDATE: I received an email from the office manager AND a voicemail from Dr Adam McClure as a result of my email to them with a referral to a doctor who can see poor Wils. I have been a client of Northside since my elderly cat was a kitten, even though I live in the city and I have many closer options. I had adopted a kitten from the Arlington shelter though, and the discounted services for adopted pets were with Arlington vets, so I went there without knowing anything about them. I was sold when Adam McClure stopped his exam and said "let's just put him on the floor and watch him and see his little personality." And that characterizes why everyone loves Northside. The doctors never make you feel rushed, they seem to genuinely like your pets, and they never force expensive treatments on you. They don't judge that not everyone is going to put their pet into radiation treatment or whatever. They give you the low cost option and the high cost option and give you pros and cons of each. I have since added another cat and 2 beloved beagles to the family and they've been exclusive Northside patients the whole way. Adam's wife Fiona is also a genius vet and Dr. Han is brilliant with cats. I also appreciate that they're not just genial animal lovers, but sound scientists and well-connected to the specialist and emergency veterinary community in the area. When my cat needed to lose weight, I expected to be put on the usual diet food, but Adam said, actually the latest in the scientific literature was essentially an atkins diet of as much protein and less carbs as possible, since cats are naturally supposed to be carnivores only. It worked like a champ and I appreciated that he kept on top of his game. The front desk staff, especially Nicola and Rebecca, are also fantastic. The whole place is part of the family. My friend referred me to Northside Vet when I got a cat about 6 years ago; her family used them until they moved from the area. I primarily see Dr. Hahn. She is warm and patient (which I think the cat picks up on!), takes time to explain the situation and your options, gives you the information and opinion necessary to make the call you are most comfortable with, and has never pushed an unnecessary service. I always feel as if my cat has received a thorough exam and I leave with a specific course of action including things to look for that could indicate a need for next steps. I cannot say enough good things about Northside. After some not-so-great experiences with one of those big-business animal hospitals, I specifically sought out a smaller, more hands-on practice. At Northside, my cats receive very personal, hands-on care. My cats have seen both Drs. Adam and Fiona and I would recommend them both. They are extremely thorough and thoughtful during examinations, whether it's routine care or an emergency. The best part is they actually spend time with me, answering my silly questions and having a real conversation. If I call them with a follow-up question or if they have lab results, they call me back personally and promptly. They're not cheap, but I think their prices are comparable to other vets in the area and I never feel like they're trying to push a lot of expensive or unnecessary care. And, bottom-line, you can't put a price tag on such amazing service for beloved pets. read more

I cannot express how much I love this clinic, and Dr. Hahn. They are extraordinarily helpful, patient, quick with questions, thorough in treatment, understanding of family life, a tight budget, and individual preference when it comes to optional procedures (neutering--I wanted to wait until my puppy was over a year, as the breeder recommended, rather than have the procedure done earlier, as is typical), and each and every human I have interacted there clearly LOVES my dog the very best. HA! There is just a wonderful feeling there that your pet is being professionally handled, but loved like a family member, and this combination does it for me. After his surgery, when Dr. Hahn called to let me know how it had gone and to let me know when to come pick him up, I asked her to just kiss him on his head for me, and with barely a pause, she warmly replied that she certainly would.
