This hotel is located off I-65 just North of US-30 on the West side. If you read some of the other reviews, I would say they are accurate. It does look pretty old and outdated. I agree with most of the reviews that the staff was friendly but I think that would apply to most of the people in Merrillville/Crown Point. The price was over $200 per night which is high for what it looks like. Also several of the rooms the toilets got clogged and needed to be cleared. They do have breakfast but after several kids went through, there was very little food left and it took a very long time to restock and refill. There are quite a few options in the area around the I-65/US-30 junction so next time I would choose another place. read more

No, it's not closed. Don't let the dried up fountain, weeds all over, and uncut grass fool you. Once you step inside, you're immediately transported to the 1990s when this hotel was last redone. The cleaning staff must have left when the landscapers did. Fortunately my room had a comfy bed, and work kept me busy. There's not a chance I would have sat on the sofa or chair unless I was in a hazmat suit. Rusty, mildewed bathroom fixtures were the icing on the "campus apartment" motif. read more

My wife and i stay here anytime we are in the area which is like 4 times a year. Its a very romantic secluded oasis. Its not a business trip kind og place, its more like a place for healing and something magical. First off, if you seen hot tub time machine then thats what this place is like. It looks like a 1988 ski resort hotel and has awesome kind of cabin look to everything. Also, the hot tub and pool were great. The pool is indoor/outdoor. I get my room key go up the stairs coz the elevator is not working put the key into the lock and nothing...tried a cpl more time...nope not working. I go back down the stairs and told the frt desk person he reprogram the keys and back UP the stairs only to find out nope the key is not working. GO back down and ask for another room. When he pulls up the former room he sees a note.....DOOR LOCK NOT WORKING.....hello!!!!! He puts me on the ground level...thank-you but this room the tv doesn't work. Again to the fr desk tell the young lady and she hands me a piece of paper with instructions on what to do if the tv does this or that. Tv never did come on..just a snowy picture. Desk manager Elizabeth was the highlight of our trip. When one air conditioner did not work, and the gentleman behind the counter was far from sympathetic, Elizabeth later helped us with moving. The picture for Clarion shows a fountain that does not work, and landscaping that sorely needs help. They did their best with breakfast considering the person who had to take care of front desk and towels for guests also took care of putting out the breakfast. I stayed at the Clarion recently for an overnight, while in The Region to visit family. Let me start with the good things: the room, the bathroom, and everything in it, was neat and clean and comfortable. I was even lucky that the windows faced out onto a small natural area, with trees and a pond, instead of the highway. The free breakfast spread was fantastic. I could hardly believe what I was seeing; I'd expected cold cereal and stale rolls. Instead, there were chafing dishes of scrambled eggs, bacon, pancakes, gallons of hot delicious coffee, cereal, juice . . . it was outstanding. The eggs were especially delicious. I made a pig of myself. And while I was eating, a few hotel staff stopped by to check in with me, was I enjoying the breakfast, how was my stay -- very friendly, pleasant, and good customer service. Checking in was easy, and so was checking out. The hotel was quiet; definitely not a busy night. No problems with parking at all. The downsides: toilet didn't flush well. TV remote was funky, had to be played with to work. Gentleman at the front desk at check-in acted like I was bothering him by showing up (although this one, I understand more -- when business is slow and someone shows up to make you work, it feels like an imposition. I've been there.) My room was at the end of the building, so I entered through a back door that was unsecured. It should be opened only with a hotel key card; instead, I walked right in when I arrived, and when I came back from dinner. (Yes, I reported this.) When my Mastercard bill arrived, I had a brief blood pressure upsurge; I saw that I had been charged three separate times for the single night. Before my eyes totally bugged out of my head, I noticed that two of the charges had been credited. So, someone at Clarion made a mistake, and somebody else caught it and corrected it. I would advise anyone who stays here to carefully check their credit card statement. When I reserved, I mistakenly thought the Clarion was located in that huge lineup of hotels next to Southlake Mall. I was wrong. You exit onto Rhode Island Avenue east of I65, and there isn't much back there except a senior living center. It's pretty isolated. That means you will have to drive for dinner. And when you exit, you don't exit the way you came in, onto Route 30; you exit onto Broadway, south of Route 30. I think this can be very confusing. I am a native of The Region, born and raised in Gary and Merrillville, so I wasn't confused, and I figured out right away how to get back to Route 30 and Southlake Mall area. Newcomers to the area who don't have access to GPS could easily get lost. So, bottom line; my stay here was A-Okay. If I spend another overnight in Merrillville, as I'm planning to do this fall, I kind of doubt I'd stay here again. I would probably be looking to upgrade a little. read more

We stayed overnight here to celebrate my daughter's birthday at a waterpark nearby. I chose this hotel based on positive reviews and because they had an outdoor pool for swimming/sunbathing. The whole hotel is in disrepair and needs attention. The grounds are not kept up, weeds everywhere, carpet dirty, things broken in the room, our ac didnt work properly (it was sticky and humid even though we set it at 68 degrees), the hallway was cooler, ice machine broken, ATM not working and the list goes on and on. I wish I had chosen a different place. It definitely took away from our family outing. Staff seemed friendly, but the owners need to sink some major $ into updates and repairs. read more

Disgusting is an understatement. When I went to the front desk to complain of various issues. The girl leaning back in a chair with her feet on the counter took a good 3-5 minutes to LOOK UP FROM TEXTING ON HER PHONE to see that I was there. Seriously? Employees are just allowed to lounge around and be on their phone so much that they don't notice a guest standing directly in front of them. Miranda was her name and she informed me that there was no manager working. Furthermore offered no solution to my complaint about the dirtiness and hair as over the bathroom or the fact that the tub was so backed up when I showered I was I other people's leftover hair and filth. Soooo gross. Not sure why she is working if she can't offer a solution. Gross to see employees smoking in uniform right in front of the hotel. Yeah that really welcomes new guests. read more

Nice hotel, good location, friendly staff that is accommodating. Their staff was very friendly and helpful with great service. I just love the comfy bed with new sheets and fluffy pillows. They really have excelled and provided excellent upgraded rooms that have microwave and some with 'fridge. Overall the rooms and halls are quiet. Some might not like that there is no elevator to the 2nd floor but that wasn't a problem for us. The hotel is situated a little further back off but is just off the main road so it seems to be tucked away from the fray. Breakfast is included and includes a pretty good variety of options available. We'll be back because its so conveniently located. read more

This place looks 100% different than the photos online. I have had many complaints air my way as well as seeing for myself. The fountain is destroyed, the pool is always closed. The hallways stink and need either replaced or at least shampooed. Mold, and plumbing issues. Just an all around No good. My boyfriend and I thought this was an upgrade from La Quinta which it is. More peaceful, secluded and not any traffic near hear. Some things I did not like about the place, I provided below. 1.) The lady at the front desk who helped my boyfriend get out room, charged my bf extra charges and double charged him for the room on his card. Then they tried charging him extra again the second time around but thank God Chase was able to block it. Something super sketchy is going on. I hope they make it right by when we check out, if not my bf will just be filing a claim since he didn't authorize those extra charges. Be aware of them trying to extra charge you. 2.) Our toilet is leaking.. which annoys my bf cuz his sock gets wet sometimes. 3.) Pool and hot tub are out of order, of course. Lol what a joke. Seriously, they need to update and fix that. It's a shame they're letting there place go to shit. We were having bad vibes at the La Quinta and now we're having some weird vibes. JeeZ hope they just make this right. The hotel should be shut down. It is seriously disgusting and no one should have to settle to stay there. I strongly recommend a complete gut out renovation and change of staff. Fortunately I was given a refund after requesting to check out the same day I checked in. It's really bad when the staff asks you if there was a problem and "did you see roaches??? " And then say "oh yeah that was room 133" meaning they already knew it's a bad room. They obviously have the wrong people staffed there to be assigning anyone to that room. Regardless the hotel hallways smell bad the room smell bad, there's holes in the walls and curtains the furniture is beyond dated and stained horribly. The rugs need to be replaced and quite frankly I wouldn't let my dog sleep there. Really horrible accommodations avoid at all cost. read more

I've stayed here many times over the last 25 years at which time it was the Courtyard by Marriott until a few years ago when it was changed (downgraded) to a Clarion. The hotel is still in decent shape but the towels have a few more snags in the, the sheets are quite at while and the carpets are a little more worn. The rooms have good amenities such as a fridge, tv, microwave, plenty of soaps, a desk and a dresser. The pool is nice and has an indoor and outdoor section that connect and the hot tub is still in good working order. My biggest downside is that the service at the counter was off, the breakfast is not included and for some reason, other than the sign outside there are no lights. In fact, it was pitch black at 9pm to the point that a dead body could be laying on the street or sidewalk and you would never see it until daylight. I was a bit unnerved walking to my car at night and I'm a very capable male. Wasn't normal for sure. They do have several spa/jacuzzi tub rooms where there is a giant tub in the main area and I've have many romantic evenings here. With the lower price of Clarion it makes for a good value for what you would pay more for at other hotels. Overall it's decent value for the money but if you want nicer, the Garden Inn or Holiday Inn are a step above. Enjoy! read more

Our Journey at the Clarion Inn in Merrillville, IN. Let start with the positives. 1. We arrived early and were able to check in early. 2. The representatives did the bare minimum to perform their duties adequately. 3. The free breakfast was actually O.K.. It's hard to mess up eggs and sausage. Now the not so good stuff. 1. A very heavy perfume like smell in the room immediately. I automatically think, what are you trying to hide? 2. Moments after checking in and entering, the front desk calls. The person that checked us in got locked out of the computer and we need to give a CC# for incidentals. I told my BF he needed to go downstairs, don't give them anything over the phone. Irritating because we had somewhere to be. 3. The room contained NO information. No TV guide, no WI-FI password. Nothing. Typically you at least get a little binder with information. This may seem petty, but it's really a culmination of things to follow. 4. There's a lovely sign in the bath that says "Forgot something? We want to make your stay as comfortable as possible". I want a box of Kleenex. They don't have any. We've stayed at a lot of places, there has always been a box of Kleenex. 5. Dude asks if I saw the tile in the shower. OMG. Moldy and yucky. I would not shower there with a gun to my head. Gross. (pic below) 6. They have 2 Ice Makers. Both inoperable. 7. Went back down to the desk to request a wine glass and pint glass. Doug wanted wine and I needed a pint to drink my collagen. As soon as I stepped up to the desk, the gentleman said "Ohhhh...you again (Kleenex bitch I guess?)". I spent a ridiculous amount of time trying to convince him to just give me 2 glasses. He said they have given guests glasses and they have broken them. I stated that we have given a credit card to cover incidentals. I don't understand the problem. He eventually honored my request and provided the glasses. He said he needed wash them and used Dial Hand Soap right in front of me to clean them. 8. We went down to eat breakfast. As I stated, it was decent. Then I looked at the floor. That dining area hasn't been vacuumed since 1994. 9. To flush the toilet you had to hold the handle down. Poor maintenance. 10. We chose the king size bed room. One side had a nightstand and the other side you had to crawl from the bottom of the bed to the top or be 5'10" 98 lbs. to climb in. We are neither. 11. The staff was very dismissive and unhelpful when I got caught in the major winter storm (Christmas 2022) and couldn't make it to the hotel. They refused to accommodate for unexpected weather (even airlines are accommodating us) and would not allow me to cancel or move my stay to another date because it was past 3pm. I've stayed at worse places for sure. It was pretty hot when I checked in the air conditioning in the lobby and hallways was not working. The room air was functioning well. Room was nice although my door was propped open and tools and supplies were left in bathroom I was so tired I thought as long as everything in the bathroom was functioning just leave it. It was so I did. Right about the time I was falling asleep I heard very loud thumping music I found it coming from the parking lot where some younger people were having a conversation while playing loud music from the car radio I travel with foam ear plugs so that helped me fall asleep. If I could give this place less than 1 star, I would. I booked thru a Priceline 3 star deal. Got to the hotel and nope, oversold, I'm left with no room at 12:30 at night. I called at 8pm to tell them I'd be there after midnight. Keisha assured me that she had set aside room 210 for me as she got off at 11 and would make sure she left a note. The girl who was working when I got there was rude and dismissive...no request to help me resolve the issue...just take it up with PricelineCustomerCare. What a joke. If I could give it 0 stars I would. Our room faced east and only had 1 curtain. The mattress was warped. Hot tub was out of service. And to top it all off, my purse was stolen from the lobby area. The staff has been no help. The GM was supposed to be in today and I requested a call (Which I never got) about viewing the security tapes. I made a reservation here over a month ago and I got here tonight for them to tell me there are 40 rooms left that aren't clean and aren't going to be cleaned so I don't have a reservation anymore, along with many other people. I was told the manager was here earlier but left knowing that they didn't have enough rooms for the reservations that were booked. The staff were not even apologetic about it. We were actually pleasantly surprised with our stay. The lobby was clean, front desk was super friendly, good breakfast options, and really enjoyed the pool. My boyfriend usually books terrible hotels, but when we got to our room I was so excited to see a clean room with a cute sitting area. The only downsides... the bed is hard as a rock and I couldn't sleep on it very well. Also, when we first got to our room, I went to use the restroom and there was still poop in the toilet from before we arrived. Really hoping it was just something wrong with the toilet. We were planning our 30th anniversary trip from Green Bay to Nashville. We were looking for a mid-point stop over. We wanted to get about a half hour south of Chicago and chose Merrillville, IN. I used Priceline's express deal feature and they steered us to this place. I am soo glad they did! Very clean and comfortable room. Safe and pleasant location. Very friendly and helpful staff. We did not try the breakfast but it looked good. (There is a Dennys nearby and I LOVE breakfast there). We got a GREAT BARGAIN through Priceline, but this hotel is even worth the money at the rack rate. I won't say that about every place I stay. read more

Oddly enough, this was the cheapest hotel we visited on a trip from VA to IL. I was pleasantly surprised. Our room was huge. We were able to set up the pack and play for the baby and still had more than enough room to move around. The bed and linens were comfortable. Both the bed and the bathroom were spotlessly clean. My husband enjoyed the complimentary breakfast. He was expecting muffins on paper plates. Instead, he was delighted to find a hot breakfast served on real plates. Seriously, he raved about the bacon for the rest of the trip. If I were to ever find myself in the area again, I would certainly stay here. read more

Very poorly maintained hotel. GM had a dog in the hotel who barked constantly. When someone complained the manager had them removed from the hotel. Rooms were clean, AC did not work, shortage of clean towels, someone had a family reunion in the lobby so it was very noisy, loud people up and down the halls all night, pool area was unkept, no towels, hot tub was green and didn't smell clean. We could not complain because the GM would throw us out. Spend a few dollars more and go to another hotel. There are 12 with in a mile. If you don't believe my review, good luck. Room was really nice & clean ... fridge & microwave. On the downside, I got moved from the first floor to the second floor ... NO ELEVATOR! (I had 3 pieces of luggage.) Uhm, wow, I don't know how they are permitted to remain a Clarion franchise! It's filthy, not maintained, no updates for decades, not an exaggeration. Customer service in virtually non existent. I had to have my key card reprogrammed daily, as did many other guests. Coffee and cups in the room but no pot, stained furniture, carpet was actually sticky, matress was worn horribly with springs hurting my back, room was cleaned only once in 4 days. Nice sized room. The electrical was a bit funky with the microwave and reefer running on an extension cord....made it difficult to plug phone/tablet chargers in, but the desk was nice. TV strange with half the channels snowy and half clear. Excellent breakfast. Clean room, all in all above average. I'd stay there again. read more

I secured a reservation through a third party which the staff decided not to honor. There was one person at the desk when I arrived and already a queue of people who were not being treated timely. While I waited for my issue to be resolved, I watched a gentleman return three times to complain that his keycard didnt work. He couldn't get in his room. I watched two people leave waiting to be served while the flippant service kid basically jokes his way through everything. Every mess up and hold up was "so weird!!!" or "oh my god this has never happened before lmao" and so insulting. Several people showed up and left to this place in a ten minute time frame. The edgy little service puke actually reprimanded the only competent other person there for "not serving the person that walked out" as if it wasn't his hideous demeanor. There were like 10 cars in the parking lot when I showed up. Hope this place dies and that unprofessional loser who works there and can't support his customers has to find a new career he can actually succeed in. read more

Came here to stay the weekend for a baseball tournament, definitely did not make the evenings relaxing. Kids running down the halls all night and someone had a dog in the hotel. This hotel is ranked wrongly in stars. I would give 0 star if I could due to the horrible experience in the past weekend. There has been no internet service in the whole weekend of July 20-22, 2018. The female general manager was super rude and unprofessional after I asked for refund of 2nd night so that I can transfer to other hotel which has internet service. She said that I can checked out, but no refund. I said this is very inconvenient for me because I cant work without internet. She claimed that this is not their problem, its Comcast's problem. There is nothing she can do and no apology from her. The room is filthy and smells moldy and cigarettes. Only one towel in the bathroom. Just horrible experience.
