Great programming in a beautiful hall that's easy to get to. What more could you want? I took in the Haydn/Handel/Bach concert this weekend and left inspired and grateful to have this gem of an institution in my city. A few things I love: 1) Community rush tickets. Being a subscriber doesn't make sense for my lifestyle (maybe someday!) and since I am someone who doesn't really care where I sit, utilizing the $25 community rush tickets is perfect for me. It keeps me engaged with the orchestra without having to commit to a large price tag or specific show dates. 2) Staff at the Kimmel Center is SO friendly and helpful. 3) I like taking my little $16 cup of wine into the hall with me and sip sipping as I listen to the music. 4) The orchestra sounds great from everywhere in this hall. I look forward to my next trip!

I attended my first Story Slam last week and it happened to be a Grand Slam - pretty much a guarantee for great narratives and funny deliveries. Before the Slam was an optional pre-party barbecue catered by Sweet Lucy's and Victory Brewing Company. I cannot say enough great things about Sweet Lucy's and their delicious smoked meats and hearty sides. Experiencing them once again only reminded me that I need to return to the mothership soon, likely with a sixer of Victory brew. The Slam took place in a large, air-conditioned theater with better than average folding chairs and the right amount of leg room. Every participant followed the rules and the time guidelines, and the event moved along seamlessly, with a short but necessary break for intermission. If you haven't yet seen or participated in a Story Slam, they take place about once a month and they provide a fun, different kind of night out.

My initial contact with The Telegram Girl was via email and within less than an hour I received a detailed response - I was very impressed with the response time and their willingness to handle all of my special requests. That same day we spoke on the phone and all details were finalized and contract completed - a very smooth transaction. My main need was to have one of the members of The Telegram Girl's team dress up as David Byrne and sing "Burning Down The House" - the guest of honor's favorite song. No problem at all! At the party, The Telegram Girl team of singers arrived on time and the fun started. Everyone was so surprised! Each singer did a great job with not only their singing but also interacting with the guests and the guest of honor. I could not have been happier with their promptness, personalities, and professionalism - well worth every penny. I just came back from the Baroque Plus concert in St. James Church. I think Astral Artists have a…read morelot going for them. My major issues with Astral Artists is the length of the concert and its selection of music. The concert dragged on for 90 minutes. Also, their theme of music was a bit confusing last night with a bit of baroque followed by modern music played by baroque instruments. If you are like me and listen to alot of classical CDs, you appreciate the simplicity of music selection and brevity with others like PCMS, Chamber Orch of Phila, and Phila Orch. Overall, I really liked the Bach pieces and wished there was more of it. When you add it with some other odds and ends, then you get more "Plus" than the "Baroque".

I hadn't been to a renaissance fair in probably twenty or thirty years, but an acquaintance of mine…read morewas working this fair and posted about it on Facebook, so I decided to bring my girlfriend and 11-year-old son with me for something to do on a Saturday afternoon. I don't have much to compare it to, but all I know is we had a blast! It was raining steadily all day, which did absolutely nothing to dampen the spirits of everyone there. Tons of hardy people were still wandering the grounds, many in incredible and elaborate costumes. Everyone was in such a great mood, it was hard not to be swept up in all of it. The fair was enormous, with something to see and do around every corner. Seven stages with official shows, plenty of games, live animals, a blacksmith demonstration, tons of food, etc. My son particularly loved getting to throw spears and daggers, as well as a free whip lesson. We happily wandered the grounds for several hours and easily forgot about the miserable cold and wet weather. Can't wait for next year!

Apparently they have different acts every weekend and some weekends have celebrity performers. If I knew about this ahead of time I would've gone 2nd weekend and the ticket price would've been worth it - feel free to dress up as extra as you want, honestly seeing all the costumes was my favorite part of the whole experience - food is overpriced as per usual - most of the acts were disappointing but that made have been partially due to the rain - it's mostly a fair for vendors to sell costumes and whatnot

Welllll, that has to be the weirdest, worst play I ever saw. We walked out after first act. Oh and don't bring the kids as there are some vulgar references from the star in drag.
