I am a 4-year resident of Waco, and Clay Pot is my favorite Asian food in town. Reading through all of the reviews, it seems some folks are put off by the lack of focus on one kind of Asian cuisine, but let's consider something. The Clay Pot sits right on the outskirts of Baylor campus, so the restaurant tries to accommodate a lot of different tastes in one fell swoop. The menu is extensive and covers an array of Asian dishes (Pho, fried rice, vermicelli noodle dishes, and things like sesame chicken). I have only had one dish here that I didn't like, and that was the spicy soup. The pineapple chicken, sesame chicken, garlic chicken, and pho soup are excellent, always made with fresh fruits, and veggies. I don't know about these people who have had bad dining experiences... it's almost like they're not eating at the same place. I've always had fresh ingredients (ESPECIALLY in my Pho, with bean sprouts, red onion, fresh spices, and challots), great service, and awesome food. And the lady that claims the servers (who are also the owners) don't speak English, that's just not true. Phong has been in Texas for 20-something years, graduated from Baylor, speaks better English than I do, and also speaks a little Spanish (his kitchen staff only speaks Spanish). Thanh, his wife, also speaks English very well. Like I said, I'm not sure these people are eating at the same restaurant. Something else... the first time I tried a spring roll, I hated it. But that was because I didn't try it with the peanut sauce. Try that, and your taste buds will be delighted. Here's a meal I recommend that absolutely will not disappoint, or else message me and I'll buy your dinner for you: To Drink: the iced tea (which is a peach/mint flavored brew), or the chrysanthemum tea (which is a hot brew with condensed milk), or the vietnamese coffee (which is honestly just grounds from Cafe du Monde in New Orleans with condensed milk... but it's super good.) Appetizer: Chicken dumplings (NOT the veggie... those aren't so tasty.) Main Dish: Clay pot sized Pho with chicken, or the Pineapple chicken (served with a side of steamed rice) Dessert: New York Cheesecake with strawberry topping, or Thanh's homemade baklavah. Try that meal on for size, and you won't leave unhappy, I guarantee it. read more

I ate here frequently when I went to Baylor, at least once a week. The prices were great and food was consistently good, and they accept Bear Bucks. The interior is a little dark but cozy, and I liked sitting at the tables on the floor. I like to think of myself as a pho connoisseur and the pho broth is not as flavorful as it could be but it satisfied my pho cravings when I couldn't get home to Houston for a bowl. I'm not sure what other reviewer was complaining about, as I was served lime, basil and sprouts for my pho upon request. The clay pots are good, especially the one with jalapeno, so are the spring rolls. Their iced tea is excellent and they will give you a large glass with your carry out order. MY MOST FAVORITE THING from Clay Pot is the chrysanthemum tea. It is served warm and is so milky and sweet. I have no idea how they make it but I have dreams about it. I've asked for it in other restaurants across Texas and no one seems to do it the same way. If you glean nothing else from my review, know that if you dine at Clay Pot you must try the chrysanthemum tea. read more

Awesome people, great place! Ordered a portion of steamed dumplings (hich came with a sesame oil+vinegar+soy dipping sauce), & lemongrass chicken. The dumplings were great, & even better when paired with the dipping sauce. Lemongrass chicken, on the other hand, was a bit of a let down. The curry was great, but the onion was a spoil sport, along with chicken, which was a let down. The onion slices were in between being raw & being sautéed, so it didn't go well. Suggestions: * grill your meat before adding it to the curry, or cook it long enough in the curry so that it absorbs the flavors * Incorporate onions into the curry paste so that you won't have to put slices of em in the curry. read more

I really wanted to have a good experience here... I was convinced to go there my my sister, and Yelp had 4 star review average, but I wasn't impressed. The restaurant has a pleasant and semi-traditional atmosphere; there are sections where you can sit on a mat (of course with pillows for your bum) and the decor seemed convincing (though clearly cheap). Anyway, I had the Pele Salmon and my sister had the Shrimp Fried rice as entrees. I should have learned by now never to order asparagus or fish dishes at a cheap restaurant... my order had both! The asparagus was extra soggy (definitely frozen and thawed, may be more than ones), and the fish was dry and over-cooked (also not fresh); the sauce also had a rather confusing blend of tastes. My sister's fried rice was extra salty and oily. We also tried a small Pho appetizer, which was decent; but the shrimp spring roll was merely average. read more

Someone once told me that the Clay Pot is decent Viet food if you remember to add the phrase "for Waco". Unfortunately, I'd have to say they're right. Food: 1-2.5 stars. The quality varies and can be decent at times, but it really doesn't taste like authentic Viet food. Dumplings/potstickers were good. The tht nng was rather bland and a bit tough. The ph was overpriced compared to other restaurants I've been to and wasn't served with the typical sides (peppers, sprouts, etc.) on a separate plate. And you know that joke about how La Croix tastes like someone whispering fruit names? The broth was basically the soup version of La Croix. Drinks: 1 Star. The tapioca was hard and not done properly, almost like it was frozen together and hadn't been boiled properly. Service: 3 stars. Usually decent, though sometimes it can take a while for the waiter/waitress to take the order and for the food to come. Depends on when you come and how busy they are. Tbh if you're either Viet, familiar with Viet food, or hail from a larger city, I'd skip out on this one unless you have a serious craving. They made veggie pho different then I'm used to with the veggies slightly cooked and not raw, no green onion or fresh jalapeño slices, but was still good. Alot of places make veggie pho with meat broth and I don't eat meat so seems pointless to order that, but here they us veggie broth. My husband wanted the chicken pho with chicken broth, but they only do it with beef broth so he didn't want it. The vermicelli bowl was really good as well as spring rolls. Who ever answered the phone was little rude and short with us our first time going because we parked in the wrong area on the opposite side they apparently wanted, but instead of just letting us know he told us in a way as if we were supposed to just know. Road Trip to Austin, my buddy and I really wanted so Pho so we started searching on Yelp. The Pho was awesome. Very unique. It was unlike any Pho I have ever had. The spring rolls were lame though. I recently went there for Sunday lunch. We arrive not long after they opened and we were warmly greeted. The atmosphere is prefect. I asked the waiter what he suggested. He asked what flavors I preferred and suggested the fried noodles. This is by far the best Asian dish I've every had. It was perfectly seasoned not needing even a drop of soy sauce. The prices were a bit high but the quality made up for it. I would totally recommend this place. This may be my new Sunday lunch spot. read more

As a college student with a frantic schedule and a tight budget I find that Clay Pot's ability to meet my criteria on a restaurant astounding. I have never left without having consumed a good portion of food that I thoroughly enjoyed. The ambient setting serves as a sort of melting pot of cultures and traditions, and the food I have there has been great. In fact, because of my experiences at Clay Pot, I think it absolutely must be a destination my fellow colleagues at Baylor make time for and go enjoy. However, not all is perfect at this humble little "somewhat Vietnamese" restaurant. First of all, if you plan to arrive during a busy time of the day, then be prepared to have trouble finding a spot. I'm fairly certain you have more fingers than Clay Pot has parking spots. Furthermore, I would classify the food as a hybrid of Vietnamese/Asian cultural dishes and american convenience. The base of most the dishes are authentic, but in order to appeal to their dominantly college student crowd, Clay Pot has mixed in some American flair to their entrees. Overall though, I would eat here occasionally. Especially for lunch, as the prices for the specials makes up for any downside the food may have. read more

We were very happy with our entire experience with the Clay Pot. I called before hand to make sure that dining in was an option. The girl on the phone spent several minutes with me discussing the restaurant and it's food. We were also very impressed by Josh as our waiter. He made excellent recommendations! It's summer and Baylor is out, so it's a quiet night at the Clay Pot with lots of local families. Fried chicken dumplings were served fast, and were hot, crisp, and full of flavor. They were a touch greasy, but not too bad. The curry chicken was a nice combination of spices, unusual, and the garlic chicken was OK, but a little soggy and too sweet for my taste. Overall, it was fast, hot, fresh, well prepared and tasty. Good student food. This is different than any Vietnamese food I have had in 20 years of enjoying this cuisine, different flavors, sauces, spices. It's good, but probably not what you are used to, so keep an open mind. We had the friendliest server who was happy to share tons of info about the menu even though he was pretty busy and he made some great recommendations! We started with the appetizer sampler and everything was fresh, hot, and tasty! Probably a little too big for the two of us, but worth it to get to try some of everything. Nothing way out of the ordinary but obviously not the standard 'straight from the grocery freezer' taste of a lot of other places. Yummy!! My Fiancé got the chicken clay pot with ice tea. The tea was delicious and fruity. I'll get it next time! His clay pot was very good but a little mild for my spicy palate. I ordered the chicken curry pot that our server recommended with the Vietnamese coffee. The curry was so good I had to tell my fiancé to drag me from the table before I stuck my face in the bowl to lick out the last of the curry broth still clinging to the sides of my bowl. Seriously! It was that good. I would order that broth by the gallon and drink it daily! It had just enough spice to leave that tell-tale tingle of delishousness on my lips but not even close to being too spicy to enjoy (I love heat though!!). A sad imitation of Vietnamese food. The Pho tasted nothing like real pho is suppose to taste and doesn't come with the correct fixings. Instant pho from the ramen packets taste more authentic. The spring rolls and the egg rolls are, for the lack of a better word, garbage. The Bun Bo Hue here is a disgrace to Vietnamese cuisine. The Pho Ap Chao (pan fried noodles) tasted OK but still isn't what it's suppose to really taste like. Their Bubble teas always taste powdery and fake. If you grew up on Vietnamese food or came from a bigger city with good Vietnamese options, coming here will be a disappointment. It's more worth it to just take that drive to Dallas or Austin to get your fix for Vietnamese food. read more

The new location is really great! Seating is more comfortable, even at the booths. We had a group of 6 and there was no wait for a table, even on a busy Sunday evening. Our waitress was pleasant and was able to understand when we mispronounced things while we ordered- Haha! The good was fantastic and we all left very happy. This is a mixed review, and I was torn between 2 and 3 stars. We started off with the appetizer (don't remember what they called it) that is little pork fried pancakes, accompanied by cucumber and lettuce wraps, plus fish sauce for dipping. These were delicious!! Also, it was a large appetizer. Unfortunately everything after was disappointing. My husband's Vietnamese iced coffee wasn't mixed, and they brought it already over ice, so the condensed milk wouldn't mix in. They should serve either separate from the ice or mix well first. His lemongrass chicken was dry. My chicken pho had shredded chicken (have never seen that, but made it easier than trying to cut the meat in a bowl so I liked that method). Sadly the broth was just flavorless, and the delicious broth is what makes pho pho!! We eat pho all the time, all over the DFW area, and I've never had such bland pho. Wouldn't go back, but if I lived in Waco I might get a to-go order of the appetizer every once in a while. Waiter was also not great. read more

This restaurant has fantastic Vietnamese food! What a great, authentic find in Waco! Try the Banh Khot, small, crispy, savory rice flour pancakes made with shrimp and ground pork. Wrap them in lettuce leaves and dip them in the accompanying nuoc mam. The rich and creamy rice porridge with fried shallots, fresh herbs, and finely shredded dried pork was excellent! I also tried the sticky rice with pork belly, and it brought me back to my time in Vietnam exploring the local street food scene. If you have time, have an iced Vietnamese coffee out on the secret back patio to see the marble dragon and the ceramic wall mural shipped in direct from Vietnam. If Thanh, the owner of the restaurant is around, make sure to have a chat! She was super friendly and gave us some tips for sightseeing in Waco. read more

Yuuummmmm!!! If you are a vegetarian like myself, there are options for us as well! Most dishes contain A LOT of rice, but I love rice, so it's ok with me. I ordered a stir fry rice dish and it was delicious. I was not disappointed with this place at all. My fiancé on the other hand who is not really a rice fan was not as impressed as I was. Not to say he hated it, it just wasn't a moment of " this is the best thing I've ever tasted in my whole life, omg I want to eat here everyday" for him like it was for me. The atmosphere is very adorable and quant. There is floor seating as well as tables. Same with chop stick optional, or just a plain old fork. You get to decide how authentic your experience is. Ate here for the first time today with the family. 3 out of 4 of us enjoyed our dish. The one not liked was the Pho, but as we haven't experienced pho anywhere else, I won't say its no good. It was a fruity-ish broth, quite the opposite of the broth you get when you order a ramen noodle soup dish. The waiter was knowledgeable about the dishes and was able to steer me clear of any dishes that could potentially irritate my shellfish allergy. The price was VERY affordable for us, the atmosphere was beautiful, and my food was the best asian cuisine I have had here in Waco. Meh. This place is just one disappointment after another ...... I ordered Bánh kht, bún cá cay hi phòng and bún bò Hu. The bánh kht came out like an overcooked and a little bigger than the size of a quarter and dark. Bún bò Hu does not have the taste of bún bò Hu. It is just off completely. The bún cá cay has the taste of tomatoes cooked with water. The broth for both soups are bland. I would not come back again read more
