I wished I could've bottled the pine smell! The deer and bunnies were happy to grace us with their presence also. Always a bonus to see animals. Not a very busy lake early in the morning had us walking the short path by ourselves and spending plenty of time reading signs and taking in the scenery. What a neat stop. So glad someone had the mind to preserve parts of our history, makes my imagination and appreciation skyrocket.

Even if you just want an out of the way spot to park and sleep in your vehicle, this spot will do. Part of the U.S. Parks & Forest Service, but there is no fee to this well maintained area. Yup. FREE!! It's down a dirt road and about 12 miles from the nearest town so expect a Texas ranch scenic drive to get there. It has one big parking lot and an area with 6 large concrete picnic tables (2 have ADA access), 4 standup bbq pits and 3 ground fire rings at each edge and back area. There is only 1 small container for refuse and 1 for recycling so plan to take out your trash if you have more than a small bag full. 2 vault toilets are also on premises. The area is patrolled by the Texas Sheriffs in this area. Met a very nice one that passes by in the evening. A park ranger will also pass by in the mornings to clean and check on the area. Was warned about coyotes in the area so watch out for your fur babies! You'll hear them at night. Very cool. Enjoy and keep it clean. :)

Tent sites are available look level ,clean . Dump station on way out must be well thought of in approach to dump, wider turn must be made onto grass to approach and empty.

Of course this is in a desolate spot in the far eastern part of the panhandle and that's just not much around, AT ALL! If you do decide to come out don't expect to be accommodated beyond a permanent port a potty and a fence with some basic rules of the park. Overall really not much can be expected from the state of OK as there really isn't much here. The views though of the landscape are second to none. It really is quite incredible the nature and wildlife that you can find out here. Despite giving this only 3 stars I say it's well worth the trip out to see it, but I don't want to give it 5 stars and set somebody up for disappointment. If you're going to make the drive out, be sure to look up the fossilized dino tracks just up the road and the tri state marker. Both are within 10 minutes of the park entrance!

I was on a cross-country road trip and altered my route significantly with the intention of camping…read morehere. I was not disappointed. This campground is a little tricky to find. From Elkhart you have to take 27 N for several miles, then a right onto FS 700, which has a marker. Then you have to drive about 4 miles on a dirt road, the campground will be on your left. What's the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Kansas? Probably fields, wide-open sky, and windmills. This place delivers on all of them in a big way - you'll see what I mean. The campsites are very-well marked and each has a fire ring, garbage can, and picnic table. There is a pit toilet and potable water as well. When I stayed the fee was $7 and the whole campground was empty and serene. Bullfrogs croaked in the nearby pond and the only other sounds were from crickets and birds and a few coyotes as the sun set. It was relaxing, scenic, and quiet. To the right (east) of the campground there is a day-use picnic area with gazebos and BBQ grills. The campground seems underused, there were a few stray beer bottles which I took to mean people like to just hang out there and drink, but I didn't see anyone else so can't confirm. This is one of my favorite campgrounds, and I'm hoping for a day when I can return.

Since I actually didn't even get to hike the volcano, I wanted to mention how fantastic the lovely lady was in the vistor center. I'm sorry that I do not remember her name, but she was such a nice person. She mentioned that her husband also used to work at a national or state park, and she swore my son in as a junior ranger, and just made the whole experience feel so wholesome and wonderful. She even swore me as an adult and made my junior ranger dreams come true! Even though I don't remember her name, I want to give her her flowers because she just elevated our experience so much! Thank you to her, and to all of our park employees who go above and beyond to give us a great experience!

The park streets and sites are crushed limestone. The park was clean and quiet. The sites are very close together; fortunately, it was not full and we had room. Restrooms and showers were clean (did not use shower). Amenities include: common fire ring with seating and view of volcano, swing with view of volcano. Stayed in pull-thru campsite #25 which had evening shade and level. It was a crushed limestone site. There was barely enough parking for my 34 ft TT. Neighbors are VERY close. Utilities: 20/30/50A electric in middle of site. Water in middle of site, good pressure. Sewer in middle of site with 4-in screw-on fitting. AT&T had two bars of LTE service. AT&T Speedtest: 36.6 Mbps down, 7.5 Mbps up. Free WiFi is available, but did not use it. The town of Capulin, NM is very small. The closest restaurant is The Sierra Grande Restaurant in Des Moines, NM, which is open year round for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Other restaurants and fast food are available in Raton and Clayton. Would stay here again. We camped at Capulin RV Park & Camp in a Travel Trailer.

The busiest weekend is July 4th, otherwise it's a fairly quiet lake. They have various events throughout July 4th weekend, such as a parade, glow and the dark golf, a picnic, etc. It's quite fun! The fishing is great at the lake, and the water is high.

It was fascinating to me, but I am sure my dog was wondering why it was scorching out on that August 2, 2016. We had been in Angel Fire where it was much cooler. Lol. I drove over to the first Visitor Center area. Then driving back over the dam some guy with a boat was tailgating us so I pulled over back into the day use area. What a jackwagon. The lake was a bit low, but there were several RV campers and a few boats out fishing. No entry fee that day. Not sure I would ever return, yet, I am glad I got to see it.

South shore camping is known to have more nature. There was a mountain lion spotted in the area before our arrival. There are critters so make sure food is secure when you leave the site for the day. We stayed at this campground, in Colorado but close to the New Mexico border, for one night in our…read moresmall Class B camper van in late April, 2024. We actually had reservations further along at a national park but decided to shorten our driving distances for the day. We were able to make our reservation online. This is a very nice campground, with sites nicely spaced out and some nice amenities. We were in the Carpios Ridge campground which has 63 sites for RVs, trailers, and tents on a ridge 150' above the lake. We're actually pleased that our mapping app took us on an indirect route to the campground as our site did not have a water-view and we might have missed the lake otherwise! My understanding is that this is an Army Corps of Engineers (COE) campground that is managed by the state of Colorado. In April, 2024, the seven sites with full hookups were $41, with only 50 amp electricity: $36, and basic: $28. You also need to purchase a state of Colorado daily vehicle pass for $10. (This is expensive as we've stayed at other COE campgrounds for 1/2 off as holders of the NPS interagency senior pass, and without the need for a vehicle pass. $46 with state of Colorado management vs $18 were it COE management -- plus we had already paid for a site at Zapata Falls Campground that we wouldn't be using. The campground has clean restrooms and free showers (for campers only), as well as laundry facilities (in theory) and a book exchange. There are shared water spigots, as well as walking trails in the vicinity. There is also a shared dump station. The Visitors Center was already closed when we arrived and wasn't open yet when we left the following morning but we were able to buy our vehicle pass at a kiosk. We saw rangers patrolling the area. Only two concerns are worth noting. First, as already mentioned, the discrepancy between pricing of state and COE campgrounds. Also, the washing machine ate my $2 without the machine starting. More than the irritation of losing the $2, we really needed to do laundry after having been on the road for few week.
