Friend and I googled yarn shops in the area and Yarn on Front came up, so off we went to Dowagiac. This little shop is a gem. It was exactly what I was looking for. Unusual yarns from trusted yarn companies. And the owner (?) was very friendly and helpful. When I told her I did a lot of knitting for charity she directed me to the discount yarn bins. There was everything from affordable yarns for every day knitting to the "wow" yarns that one only buys for special people and occasions. Another customer came in and we joked about our yarn stashes (huge but always room for more). Very friendly people! I ended up buying more yarn than I planned just because I was so comfortable with the shop. The choices of needles was huge so I was able to get a circular knitting needle that I had been looking for. I had located a person who was going to do the work but at the last minute they said their machine couldn't handle the job. It was right around the holidays and less than two weeks from when I was planning to give the shirt as a gift. I contacted several Chicago and NW Indiana shops and all said they either wouldn't do the work at all or didn't have the time but not Sewing By Judy! They saved the day!! I had emailed Judy initially and she said she'd be able to the job based on the design I sent over to her. She quoted me a very reasonable rate to the have the embroidery pattern made and then just $5.00 per item to have it embroidered on to (it was a pocket design on a polo shirt). The best part is that should I ever need anything else printed, they are keeping the design on file so in the future, I'd only have to pay for the embroidery work (which, as you can see, is VERY reasonably priced). Judy and her team were incredibly helpful, friendly and fast in getting everything prepared and ready to go. On top of that, they delivered EXCELLENT quality work two days before I had said I would need the job to be done. Not only was the service incredibly fast, but it was also very affordable. This spot honestly saved me from having to make an hour long drive to my usual place, and I'm so glad I found them. One thing to keep in mind, they were able to turn this around so quickly because I made my own design and it was printed on a white shirt. Some highlights: - I overheard one of the salespeople organizing a sale via the phone, so their online and "phone it in" orders seem robust. She said the order would go out in the mail that day, and I saw her taking a good amount of time to choose the couple of fabrics that would most closely match the customer's request, and give a recommendation as to which one the customer would actually buy. - To illustrate fabric count, they had a wall hanging of the same design stitched on four differently-sized fabrics, which was neat - They had lots of finishing supplies to help even the most indecisive person figure out how they want to finish - Their store models obviously came from years and years of stitching, so I imagine the collective knowledge in the store was pretty impressive.
