I really liked the idea of a challenger to keep Comcast on their toes. I also liked the idea of a home+mobile internet plan. I'm sorry to say that this one falls short. Their "free" trial was not worth the time, money, or energy I spent. The biggest cons were: - lack of coverage - slow/inconsistent speed - a sneaky 2 year contract with a hefty cancellation penalty I was curious about Clear, and chatted online with one of their representatives. I was really hoping for an ISP that would provide data access to a smartphone so that I could cancel my data plan. Even though they didn't have that, the guy offered me a "free" 2 week trial period. Months later, I have come to realize that it was not so free as they led me to believe. Their idea of free is allowing me to "break" the implicit 2 year contract without having to pay hundreds of dollars in penalties. I still paid for usage and lease fees for the mobile modem. They did however refund the money I paid to purchase the home modem ($86 out of the $120 I paid, so not bad), but not automatically. I had to call 2 weeks after I canceled and mailed them back their equipment to remind them that they still hadn't refunded my money. I have no doubt that if I had not called, they would have happily ignored the situation. After trying out this service for a while, I decided to cancel because I couldn't get more than 1Mbps and because the signal would sometimes drop completely, giving brief outages. (I should note that one of my friends has no problems with speed or connection with Clear, it depends a lot on your location.) I called to cancel 13 days after receiving the gear they sent me. The representative told me that I was too late because the trial period started when I first spoke with a representative 16 days earlier. I told her that was completely ridiculous. After all, it's not much of a trial period if the gear isn't there to try! She was trying to tell me I'd have to pay hundreds of dollars in termination fees. I strongly disputed that, and she backed down and offered to extend the trial period after offering tech support to help me. After an hour of diagnosing with me, they sent me another modem and extended my trial period for a week. This modem fared no better than the first, so I called to cancel again. They did all they could to try to convince me to stay, but I told them I was determined to leave. They said they could fix the problem, they just needed a few days. I told them that unless they could fix the problem in the next 10 minutes, that I wasn't interested. They sent me to a tech support guy who told me that the first tech support guy wasn't supposed to send me a new modem and offered a different approach. He had me restart my computer and clear my cookies and cache (logging me out of all websites, etc.) neither of which did any good. Then he sent a reset code. To my surprise, my speed shot up to 8Mbps!!!!!! I was happy, but skeptical. He was about to sign off and hang up the phone, when I asked him to extend the trial period another week. After all, if I have to clear my cache each time to get decent speed, it's not worth much, and I needed to know this wasn't a temporary fix. Don't worry, he said, the cache-clearing didn't have anything to do with the fix. (How reassuring.) Anyway, he extended my trial period a second week. All of this in only 90 minutes. Sure enough, the service quickly downgraded itself to lousy the next day. I called to cancel one final time, and broke through their wall of persistent protestations. After an hour of them trying to convince me to stay, I finally was able to cancel my service. Of course, they didn't send the refund until I asked them to, but now that this is all behind me, I can breathe a sigh of relief. read more

I tried to give this bad company 0 stars so it could get the proper review it deserves. Unfortunately, Yelp is too nice.

I have been a Clear customer for 1 year. The first 3 months were fine. There were 2 outages lasting less the 1 day. At the 5 month mark there was a 1.5 day outage. During this time speeds were fair (1-2 megs down and 1 meg up) Terms of the contract were 5 down and 1 up [but the technology is a shared service so the maximum is never attainable]. Speed has declined steadily until the past three months where it hovers between .4 and .6 meg down and .2 to .4 meg up. This speed I have checked and confirmed daily for the last week. 4 sessions with Clear com tech support have increased my frustration and not solved any issue.
