Our family had an amazing kayaking tour with Sean from Clearwater Sports. There were 7 of us ranging in age from 12-72. We all had a wonderful time kayaking in the Winooski. While the river was a little low, Sean was great at pointing out how to navigate. He also kept up with all of us, from the fastest to the slowest (me). Sean was a real hit with the 12 and 14 y/o grandchildren, finding the best swimming spots. He also took lots of photos and sent them to us after the tour. And I have to also mention Asa, our driver. He and Sean were a great team. I highly recommend this tour if you are looking for a family outing. read more

2nd time I used Clearwater; both times walked away feeling ripped off. Proprietor would not work with us and did not care whether or not customers were happy. I am a very unsatisfied customer. This was an absolutely wonderful day full of laughs and lots of adventure. The water was on the lower side but we still managed to find swimming holes and nice stops to enjoy the clear gorgeous water. I live in Iowa. I needed a specific type of Old Town canoe but couldn't find it in my area. Then I stumbled upon it at Clearwater Sports. I called and got Barry. He patiently helped me with my canoe order and arranged the shipping. Unfortunately there was an issue with the canoe when it arrived. Barry promptly took charge of the problem and worked out a wonderful solution with Old Town and me. The customer service I received from Barry and Clearwater Sports was first rate. While buying the second new kayak from them in 12 months last October I asked if they could repair a small hole in the bottom of an old kayak I had. Barry said he could and quoted me a price range for the job. I told him I lived 5 hours away but was in the area occasionally to visit family. I asked if he would be able to do the repair while I was in town next for three days over the Christmas holidays. He said he could. I dropped the boat off at the beginning of that December 2018 visit. When I came back 3 days later to pick it up he acted amazed I thought it would be ready when he said it would. I was a little annoyed but it wasn't a big problem because I don't paddle in the winter. I told him I would pick it up on my next visit to the area. That visit was three and a half months later. The job STILL wasn't done. I asked him to do it during THAT three day visit. He said he couldn't possibly do it that fast and would need ANOTHER two weeks. I asked him why he had failed twice to do it in the time promised. He admitted he shouldn't have made the promises he had made. Ten days later he called me to say the job was done and that the price would be several hundred percent more than what he had quoted because the job had taken longer than he expected. Instead of calling me to ask if I wanted to spend much, much more on the repair than his estimate, he simply finished the job and used my credit card number from the new kayak purchase to charge me the higher price. He justified this on the grounds that the repair took two hours which was longer than he expected. The much longer time I spent driving there three times for a repair he said could be done in one trip for much less money did not influence him. I never would have authorized this repair in the first place if he had been honest about either how long it would take OR how much it would cost. These guys are not to be trusted. read more

Buyer beware! I took a damaged kayak for repair. It took months to make the repair, charged me $800!!!, the work was shoddy, and then kept the kayak when I refused the ridiculous bill (the kayak cost $800 new). I'm from out of state, so I was out of luck. I dealt directly with the owner, who even his employees appear to dislike very much. read more

I was supposed to go water tubing, but ended up on a walk. They allowed us to purchase tickets from establishment to water tube. They provided us with tubes and a quick ride to the drop off point. The water was so damn shallow, we walked 1/2 the trip. We grabbed our tubes, walked along slippery rocks and our 3 hour tubing event was 4 hours bc of all the cautious walking we had to do. We also had a 4 year old with us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I wish I said something before we left bc I think we should be compensated, but I just want to get back to where I am staying and shower and relax. I had no energy to complain (now i do). Bottom line: they don't care about whether you enjoy the experience. They want your money. They shouldn't have had tubing today. They may as well as sold us ti met for skiing. read more

They carry great stuff, clothing and gear, but everything is overpriced. I wanted to support them as a local business, but they instead tried to take me for every dollar I had. They gave me the wrong information about my tele binding, and tried to get me to buy a pair of demos. While the demos were great skis, I followed up with the ski manufacturer to find they were wrong/lied. Will never know for sure but the mistake would have been hundreds of dollars in their favor. Instead of apologizing, they told me that my perfectly good skis were "totally spent" and wouldn't do me any good anyway. I rented a pair of AT skis with Fritschi bindings from these guys last February to test the equipment as I was in the market for AT equipment. The experience was absolutely horrible and, a year later, they're still trying to whack me for $500+. Here's the story. After asking half a dozen questions about the bindings and whether or not I should treat them any differently than a downhill binding (the answer was an emphatic "NO"), I proceeded to Sugarbush for a day of skiing. After about my 3rd or 4th run down, the front left binding blew into about 5 pieces, my ski went flying, I fell but fortunately recovered without injury. At the end of the day I brought the broken equipment back to the store, the clerk expressed shock that the binding broke and that was that (or so I thought). About a week later I received a call from the store, advising that they would have to charge me the full price for new bindings. I protested, explained that no backcountry binding should shatter like that, especially in a ski resort on cut trails to a guy who weighs 170 pounds. (Upon further research I learned that the Fritschi binding has a tendency to shatter if it is set too tight.) In an effort to settle the matter without hard feelings on either sid, I offered to split the difference, a gesture that they simply ignored. So, they charged my debit card and, to this day, I am still fighting with them over the charge. Bottom line: these guys seem to have zero interest in a satisfied customer, they apparently know nothing about ski equipment (especially AT skis) and they refuse to acknowledge any wrongdoing even in circumstances where it's quite clear they're at fault. DO NOT PATRONIZE CLEARWATER SPORTS. read more

Had a great time tubing. They delivered the tubes to us down by the covered bridge. Only had to walk once about 3'. Our employees had a blast and so many laughs. I am part of a group of athletic women who just completed a kayaking trip down the Mad River. Of the six of us, four are seasoned kayakers and two are raw beginners. We reserved this adventure, with a clear message that a guide would need to be cognizant of our varying levels of proficiency and were assured we had one of the company's most seasoned guides. Our orientation was brief at best, and we all put into the water. The guide paddled ahead, and some of us were left behind to maneuver. Luckily for us, the Fearless Foursome of experienced kayakers could provide guidance, instruction and support. One of our group got caught up on a rock in the river, and another kayak careened into the stuck vessel, and two of us were stuck on a rock and locked together. The guide calmly sat in his kayak, way ahead of us, and waited while we successfully dislodged from the rock as well as each other. With minimum direction, and lack of clarity, we were led down the river through rocky areas, rapid water and a drop. As we headed around a bend, one kayaker flipped over as she maneuvered beside a protruding tree limb. Again, the guide sat idly by, after instructing us all to stop and wait. We asked continually for him to assist, and finally we attempted to forge the river to help our friend, who had uprighted and drained her kayak, and flipped again. Finally, one of our crew decided to drag her kayak up river a bit in order to paddle down to rescue our friend. At last the guide decided that he should give that maneuver a go. One more flipped kayak, at a water drop, between rocks, and one more lack of leadership or assistance occurred, before our trip was over. We are all great friends who enjoy adventuring together. We had a marvelous time. However, clearly, this journey would have been just as much fun, and with fewer mishaps, had the guide stayed at home. It is a very poor reflection on an outdoor adventure company to not provide experience, competent and attentive guides. I would never recommend using Clearwater Sports for guided trips. read more

I went to a free Stand Up Paddle board demo at a near by lake. I was very impressed with the variety of boards that I was allowed to try and the passion they had for the sport. Both owner and manager paddle extensively and have tried a variety of boards. I was very excited to buy my board from them. read more

I want to support a local business but... I and my husband have been in numerous times and have always felt that the owner was an aggressive sales person. We do like the choices they have but the prices are high and there seem to not be many sales. I recently bought a pair of boots, got home and felt they didn't fit my feet right so if returned them, 2 days later. I was told I could only have store credit. If I had brought them back the day before I could have gotten a cash refund. Seems odd to me and with it being the holidays I would have liked to free my cash back up. Now I will have to patronize the establishment again to use my money, which I am sure was his goal but feel it was a crappy move. read more

i can't speak to the services they offer, but the clothing they carry is top quality - patagonia, cloudveil, isis, etc.

We took a trip with these guys and were very disappointed. The trip was clearly calculated to be the minimum that they could possibly offer without being too obvious about it. We paddled for about 15 minutes and then, though we had seemingly just started, it was time for lunch. Lunch was artificially prolonged by our guide for reasons that are now clear, then we paddled for another half hour (maybe less), before reaching the take out point. There we waited half an hour before being picked up by the van for our return. The net outcome was a total of 45 minutes or less actually in the boat on the river. I recently rented five, yes FIVE paddle boards from Clearwater Sports. I priced them out online and called to reserve them. I was told if I wanted to rent them for the next day, my best bet would be to pick them up the night before. So, as soon as the boards were returned from previous renters, I headed down to pick them up for the following day. I thought it was a bit odd that I was charged $450 when I had priced them out at $300, but I guessed perhaps I was being charged a deposit and would be credited when I returned the boards later in the day. Not the case. I was first told, over the phone, that I was charged for an extra half-day for each board because I took them overnight. When I made it clear that HE, (Barry) was the one who suggested I take them the night before, and he had NEVER indicated he was going to charge me, Barry, (the owner) assured me that he would credit my card. When I drove back to the store, Barry quickly left the scene as soon as I arrived and left me to speak with Craig, (the other owner?) Craig shared that I was only charged an extra $20 per board, (A TOTAL OF $100,) instead of the full half-day price. "You see, we only charged you $85 per board?" He said, AS IF I WAS GETTING SOME SORT OF A DEAL. I argued that I should not be charged ANY extra fees at all AND according to the web site, I rented three boards at 65 and two boards at 55, so Barry took it upon himself to charge me one flat fee for all the boards, of course, the higher price. I fought and was advised to come back later, (again!) Upon later speaking with Barry, his story changed, "Nope, you were only charged a $20 overnight fee. We have this posted on our board and tell customers when they pick up the equipment." Not true. I assured him that if he was upfront with this information we wouldn't be having the conversation in the first place. I am really disappointed in the "sketchiness" of the rental agreement, and even more bothered by the dishonesty. When I told him that nothing of this overnight fee is mentioned on the website, he added "Our website is under construction." I made it very clear that I will never do business with them again, and I certainly will not recommend the company to any potential customers. read more
