I dreaded going there for the first time, but was immediately put at ease. Timothy met me, sat down with me and explained everything. Although I arrived with a rough draft of the obituary, Timothy helped me finalize it and select a photo. He explained about the cremation process, explained the various urns. I opted for the compostable one, as I am planning to spread the ashes. I asked about the certified Death Certificate. Timothy was very helpful. I was ready to purchase 10+, but he advised that 5 would probably be more than sufficient and if I needed add'l ones, just phone Walker's and they will order them. It turns out he was correct--5 has been plenty. He did not try to oversell in any way. He was very respectful of the grieving process. When I returned to collect the "cremains", I again was assisted by wonderful staff who helped make a sad event not quite so sad. I highly recommend Walker's Chapel Hill. They show compassion and respect and assist throughout the process.

"The cemetery is full of indispensable people." -Winston Churchill…read more Olde Town Cemetery was established in 1757 by the colonial Assembly and is the final resting place for some of the city's original Colonial era settlers. I also saw a number of veteran gravestones (some Civil War) and a number of other city leaders. One noteworthy interment is William Hooper (1742-1790) who was a member of the Continental Congress representing North Carolina and was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence though he was reburied at the Guilford Courthouse National Military Park. The Hooper family home stands two doors away on West Tryon Street. Another is James Hogg (1729-1804) who was born in Scotland and became an advocate for establishing a state university. The tallest gravestone is the obelisk honoring William Alexander Graham (1804-1875) who was the 30th Governor of North Carolina and served as Secretary of the Navy under President Fillmore. The ground is very uneven and a little challenging especially following a cold rain when it was quite muddy. Nonetheless, an interesting and insightful walk, imagining the lives of those who came before us. There is parking across the street at the police department.
