It's in the Far East part of Cleveland and there's some amazing food out here. It's not the safest neighbourhood, especially at night, but it's hipstery and well-manicured and exciting and nice, and it's definitely one of the heartbeats of the city, much like Ohio City which is more close to Center, and the West Side Market. It's an amazing City, and an underrated one. And neighbourhoods like this are one of the reasons why. So try a gyro from Best Gyros, and perhaps try a legendary Godfather Sandwich from Melt, and definitely try a milkshake or better yet, a malt, from Tommy's as well. NE Ohio is a whole world unto itself, it's a region, a destination, a little country that has little in common with the rest of Ohio. It's not nearly as Midwestern as other parts. My favourite thing is that the food here is phenomenal. While Pitt is a more gorgeous city (than almost any other), and has some food gems, Cleveland has more "must try" spots than Pitt, Columbus, Cinci, Detroit and Toledo put together. Bold claim, I know, but there are just so many things in Cleveland that you need to, need to, need to eat. And yes I'm going to tell you what they are. And if you prefer a more spicy kind of city, then I suggest going to Cloveland instead. They have some amazing options - very few of them healthy - but all of them delicious, and some among the very best in the country. The 9 Must-Trys: Angelo's - the loaded baked potato pizza, deep dish, is one of the best 5 pizzas in usa Best Gyros - best Gyro in town, both locations, one of USA's best Biagios - get crulers, but only when you get there at 4am so they're fresh, hot and gooey Corky and Lennys - the sammy kay sandwich is incredible, so is the goulash Hartville Kitchen - Amish, way south, try Roast Beef, Dessert Pies, Chocolate Shakes Pupuseria La Bendicion - maybe best pupusas & tamales in the usa, you must try it Raddells - excellent hot hungarian sausage on bread at lunch time Setis - best Polish Boy in town, which is a cleveland classic, try it (Al & B's is good too) Swensons - get the Galley Boy. I encourage the reader to venture 10 miles south to Parma, OH and climb 500 feet in elevation to the highlands. There is a beautiful collection of television and radio towers there. Most are taller than the Key Tower and in my estimation it is a far more unique and interesting photo op. Wikipedia says that this grouping of towers is second only to Mount Wilson in LA. I stood at the foot of one of these hulking beasts today and almost lost my balance when I kept moving my neck to see the top. Maybe equilibrium was lost because of the tower transmissions burrowing a hole into my brain. I harken back to one of the greatest films of all time They Live by John Carpenter starring Roddy Piper. The mission of the protagonist was to stop radio towers from programming our population thereby destroying humanity. It is a breathtaking few acres of land containing giant magical steel structures that send out signals that travel to far far away places for little children and grown folk as well to watch tv, play on their phones/tablets/beepers(maybe)?/computers/etc.. Nearby houses love this place so much, they attach mini Antenna to the roofs of their homes in attempts to bring some of the magic even closer to home. I bet by next year the word spreads and theres an entrance fee to this place. I imagine it to be something similar to Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Very mind blowing! The Cuyahoga River moves North - South and has multiple parks, waterfalls, picnic areas, car lots, bike paths, walkways and historical signs to read! This area of Cleveland is very serene, quiet and a nature preserve filled with outdoor stillness. The Cuyahoga Valley National Park is vast and green and connects lots of towns East - West South is Cleveland. Unfortunately some of these backwoods roads are near-undriveable and almost not street legal in their derelict state. Signs are missing. I was raised LDS, so coming to a place like Kirtland (which yes, I'll admit, probably seems…read moreentirely random to the average person) was actually a really interesting experience. Some of my ancestors lived in Kirtland, so seeing a piece of my personal history was really insightful and something I'll never forget. My dad, my brother, and I all went on a guided tour around the grounds which is where the Mormon Church moved to in the 1800s. A lot of these buildings are restored originals where you can see what it was like to be in the village during that time. Kirtland itself is actually a really beautiful small town and from what the tour guides told me, it is quite spectacular in the autumn when the leaves change color. The volunteers were very knowledgable and kind young women who told us a lot about the history of the grounds and had fun facts at nearly every turn. Really cute tour and fun if you are into local history!

It's the picture perfect representation of Americana. Expect I personally think it's all fake. I have a like/hate relationship with the Falls. It feels too commercialized to be real, like the town it capitalizing on the small american lifestyle without actually being "small America". Maybe I've seen Pleasantville one too many times but this place just seems off. The stores aren't actually local, the restaurants aren't really run by families, the Starbucks is the most frequented stop, and unless you're making a hefty yearly salary, you just feel unwelcome. Or at least that's how I feel when I'm here. One time I had my NPR bumper sticker stolen off my car here. Now I don't know about you, but I don't think they wanted it for themselves. It was more like they didn't want that kind of riffraff in their town. Also, (this is the last thing I swear) no public transportation runs through Chagrin Falls. I have written to town hall about this because I think 1: it's discriminatory and 2: it's terrible marketing. Take it as you will, I'm just not a fan.

Ahem! Now that I have got that out of my system! Visiting the city of Cleveland never crossed my mind this year until I saw a promotion for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Half Marathon on my Facebook feed. After researching the event, its location, and the registration prices, I was sold. It turned out to be the perfect reason to visit the city the best way I know how--by running! Some notable Cleveland foods that I wanted to try included Lake Erie perch and walleye, pierogies, paczki, cassata cake, and buckeyes (the candy, not the team). Researching activities outside of the run itself--like the city's history, the Great Lakes Science Center, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the USS Cod Submarine Memorial, and, of course, the iconic A Christmas Story House--made me highly anticipate the visit. As for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Half Marathon, it began as a way to combine Cleveland's rich music heritage with a major running event. Giving runners a scenic loop around the city, passing landmarks. The run elevation for this half marathon event was downhill, but of course, there were some climbs--nothing wild, though! The highlights encountered for me were starting downtown near the Great Lakes Science Center, Huntington Bank Field, the Cleveland State University campus, the lovely cultural gardens along Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Lake Erie, and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Museum--which reminded me that the finish line was just ahead. Prior to my visit, I bookmarked several restaurants to try some of the foods of interest to me, which were The Lakehouse, Butcher and the Brewer, and Mitchell's Homemade Ice Cream. However, the restaurants I ended up visiting during my three days visiting were Mr. Hero, Zanzibar Soul Fusion, REBOL, and Jake's Pizza which were notable restaurants within the city. Next visit, I would love to visit either Winking Lizard Tavern, Mabel's BBQ, 7 Cravings, or Mitchell's Homemade Ice Cream which were popular ones I discovered or did not get to visit. Notable sights that I would love to visit or revisit in Cleveland in the future include the Great Lakes Science Center, the USS Cod Submarine Memorial, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, A Christmas Story House, and the Superman House. Finding out that Cleveland is the birthplace of Superman completely blew my mind. High school friends Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster dreamed up and illustrated the iconic superhero in 1933 while living in Cleveland's Glenville neighborhood. Learning this piece of history--which I hadn't fully known before--was a major highlight of my visit, right next to watching the Cleveland Browns versus Buffalo Bills game. I am very open to visiting Cleveland again. The city grew on me within the three days I visited, and there are some sights I did not get the chance to see yet.
