Some of my ancestors lived in Kirtland, so seeing a piece of my personal history was really insightful and something I'll never forget. My dad, my brother, and I all went on a guided tour around the grounds which is where the Mormon Church moved to in the 1800s. A lot of these buildings are restored originals where you can see what it was like to be in the village during that time. Kirtland itself is actually a really beautiful small town and from what the tour guides told me, it is quite spectacular in the autumn when the leaves change color. The volunteers were very knowledgable and kind young women who told us a lot about the history of the grounds and had fun facts at nearly every turn. We saw old steam locomotives, learned how they work, and that the machine shop is busy making parts no longer found. The American Freedom Train, after years of work (I saw it in sad shape in 2018) will take to the rails next year for the 250th birthday of the U.S.A. Passenger cars were sitting for restoration, some in working order. The black one on the turntable was lived on by a wealthy couple during Covid as they traveled safely. The car that we sat in was used in the movie "The Natural" and Robert Redford sat there. The "Death" Car filled with steam and killed everyone in it, and now has active ghosts. Cabooses are no longer due to automation. Only an engineer and a conductor ride each train. I need to find a group and go again. Look for open houses here. Not expensive. A deal with a Groupon.

While I admit that I didn't read the description enough, I thought this would mostly be a train ride. It wasn't. So this starts in a large machine shop shared with a business. There is many friendly volunteers to check people in. Then a tour guide takes you to first a caboose to walk through. Then comes the train ride. It was cool as it was vintage passenger car, but was only 15 minutes. After this, you tour various old style steam and diesel trains. This is great for kids to a point, some do get restless, but there is plenty to look at. Adults interested in mechanics and old trains will also love it. They also have ghost tours as the passenger car was the site to an accident that killed many people. This group is interesting because they are mostly volunteer and are working to retire very expensive machinary. They also had a blacksmith (my favorite part).

I've been to a lot overrated places, so I think I'm a subject matter expert. First off, the entry and exit experience is terrible. The doors and turnstiles are unnecessarily difficult to operate -- you practically need to be a bodybuilder just to get through them. I mean, they should name the building Knee Tower. Get it? Because you need to use your knees to open the doors. Parking is ridiculous. The garage beneath the tower is confusing, cramped, and overpriced. Navigating it is a nightmare. And believe you me when I tell ya, I've nightmared of being overcharged here. As for the office spaces themselves, the views -- which you'd expect to be a highlight in a skyscraper are underwhelming. They should call it Viewless Tower. The neighboring Marriott hotel is also terrible. I mean, may as well stay at a red roof inn. They should call this place Keyless Tower because no one actually wants to unlock it and go in anyway.

Society's funds quadrupled during the Civil War, it erected its own office building on the northeast corner of PUBLIC SQUARE in 1867. The cornerstone and lamp light are still there outside. When you go in there is plenty of marble, carved wood, art and stained glass (probably Tiffany glass as Tiffany had their building not far from this one) from that era. It's a beautiful building to walk through and see.

This monument, and surrounding area on the East Bank of the Cuyahoga River in The Flats, is a memorial to the Great Hunger, the potato famine of the 1840's. It includes a few small things but mostly consists of a Celtic cross statue. Come down here mostly for the view. The Cuyahoga River offers a great vantage point of the city via the Flats, with nice greenery and a picturesque view of the water. It's in the Far East part of Cleveland and there's some amazing food out here. It's not the safest neighbourhood, especially at night, but it's hipstery and well-manicured and exciting and nice, and it's definitely one of the heartbeats of the city, much like Ohio City which is more close to Center, and the West Side Market. It's an amazing City, and an underrated one. And neighbourhoods like this are one of the reasons why. So try a gyro from Best Gyros, and perhaps try a legendary Godfather Sandwich from Melt, and definitely try a milkshake or better yet, a malt, from Tommy's as well. NE Ohio is a whole world unto itself, it's a region, a destination, a little country that has little in common with the rest of Ohio. It's not nearly as Midwestern as other parts. My favourite thing is that the food here is phenomenal. While Pitt is a more gorgeous city (than almost any other), and has some food gems, Cleveland has more "must try" spots than Pitt, Columbus, Cinci, Detroit and Toledo put together. Bold claim, I know, but there are just so many things in Cleveland that you need to, need to, need to eat. And yes I'm going to tell you what they are. And if you prefer a more spicy kind of city, then I suggest going to Cloveland instead.
