Thanks to the Montage Kapalua and Yelp, my friend and I got to experience the infamous Cliff House! ATMOSPHERE: Perched on a low, rocky cliff off the Montage Kapalua's property, the intimate glass-walled "house" overlooks the Pacific with the island of Molokai as its backdrop. Inside is a small bar, communal table and low tops, with high tops lining the outdoor balcony. Restrooms are located on the first level of the House. THE CLIFF HOUSE: Originally built in 1940 for the managers of the now defunct Honolua Plantation, it was recently renovated and is now operated by the Montage Kapalua, though used only for private events. VEUVE CLICQUOT EVENT: In December 2017, a few of us Elite Yelpers were invited to an event that was actually open to the general public. The House was gussied up in French company Veuve Clicquot's signature orange-yellow colors via logo banners and table umbrellas. The pricey menu featured Champagne & cocktails by the glass (starting at $23) or by the bottle (starting at $138). Small bites available were oysters, tuna tartar, pavlova, crudo and burrata, starting at $22. We were served specifically the Rich Cocktail drink in which I chose the pear flavor that was very refreshing, followed by a glass of their Yellow Label. We sampled all of the small bites except for the oysters, and all were absolutely delicious! We ended with a meringue dessert that wasn't on the menu. SERVICE: The outstanding service started even before we got to the Cliff House as we were greeted by Katherine (I believe was her name) at the valet area as we exited our car. She walked us to the lobby and explained how to get down to the event and even popped in during the event to make sure everything was going okay. The servers at the Cliff House were friendly, professional and attentive. I'm sure that tending to a table of Yelpers might seem challenging but we're all cool peeps! OVERALL: The perfect place for an exclusive event of 40 guests or less.

Located off the Coastal Trail and on Montage's beach: Veuve Cliquot pop-up!

After an invigorating walk on the Coastal Trail, we discovered that the Hale Veuve Cliquot pop-up bar was open. Quel régal! We had chosen a few coupes de champagne, but Randy our server reminded us that the sun would warm the champagne quickly. He suggested two "Rich cocktails" with pineapple and berries. My first thought was, "How can you do that to Veuve Clicquot?" It is a nearly perfect and pricey champagne that doesn't need any ice or mixture, but we tried them and were not disappointed. Refreshing and not too sweet. Still, these cocktails would be good with California sparking à la Roederer. The VIEW! Impressive over the water location next to a popular cliff jumping area. Solid and personable service even though we were back from a sunny hike and not too fancy. A taste of the finer side of life!

This review is for the Champagne Hale at the Montage at Kapalua Bay. You may also find this familiar with close to "cliff house" for the locals ;) I had the honor to attend an end of the 2017 year event with our new Maui Community Ambassador Maria P. What a way to say Aloha! The drive was a bit of traffic for my girlfriend and I from Kihei, but that's to be expected. It's totally worth it to venture to the Westside. Valet park at Montage and mention you're headed to the Vueve Clicot Champagne Hale and they will give you directions to the trail. From the ocean, you'll see a delightful trail of that famous Goldenrod, set amongst lanterns, and an adorable beach cruiser and accessories set against the most Luxe Hale I've ever seen. Cozy seating is located under umbrellas on the lanai. You can also take a seat at the family style counter height, family style tables. Be prepared for the view - it's breathtaking! From the ocean as far as you can see, to the cove known as Cliff House - for the adventurous divers, you'll be in for a treat. Come for a host of specialty champagne cocktails and deluxe tapas offerings. From crudo to ceviche and an off menu merengue.

    Yes ... go this way!

Seriously ... one of the best sunset views on the planet. This week, champagne is flowing everyday from 4 to 8 amd it is open to the public. Very special! I had the berry muddled drink today and it was awesome. I'm coming back tomorrow! Cheers!

Ummmm! How could a champagne house off the shore of Maui, where you cliff dive, swim over & enjoy a glass of Champs be less than Golden?! I believe in Magic!

    You can see Molokai!

Looking for somewhere to cool off on the west side? Cliff house has got you covered. This place has perfect water, amazing views and fun snorkeling but it's not a place for everyone. You need to use extreme caution when coming here to swim. It's not a beach and the water can get rough. I personally wouldn't bring little kids here unless they know how to swim and it's in the calm water months of summer. Bring floaties and hang out-just be aware that it's either in the water, or on the hot rocks. There isn't a sandy beach to lay out on. But it sure is a beautiful view. It's fun to watch the local kids do flips and stunts. Getting to the cliff house is a bit of a walk and you'll need to get there early to ensure that you get a parking spot. Parking is very limited. The water is a perfect shade of blue with an incredible reef to enjoy. Locals know, but guests sometimes need to be reminded: do NOT touch the reef. We are guests and it's only for looking. Whatever you take IN to the area, please take OUT. So many times there is garbage left behind. Respect the aina. There are no bathrooms here. There is a shower located by the parking lot. Watch out for wana (sea urchins), don't touch turtles and take lots of pictures. It is a beautiful place to enjoy.

Cliff House Jumping spot, a must do on Maui, super fun way to spend an afternoon!

Unfortunately, our experience fell well short of those expectations. Our stay started with being checked into a room that hadn't even been cleaned. After bringing it to the staff's attention, they did make an effort to recover by moving us to a new room, providing $300 in resort credit, and offering us an Oasis bed at the pool, which we appreciated. However, the service inconsistencies continued throughout our stay. One evening we returned from dinner to find another couple's honeymoon welcome package--including champagne and banana bread--delivered to our room. While not a major inconvenience, it highlighted a lack of personalization and attention to detail that you simply don't expect at this level. Pool service was another disappointment. Our initial lunch order of avocado toast, poke, and carne asada tacos took over 30 minutes, and a later quesadilla order also took more than 30 minutes. The staff did comp us a round of drinks for the delay, which was appreciated, but the food itself was underwhelming and didn't justify the premium pricing. What stood out most was the disconnect between the cost of staying here and the overall experience. When you choose a Ritz-Carlton, you're not just paying for a beautiful property--you're paying for exceptional, personalized service and flawless execution. That's the standard the brand has built its reputation on. While the staff consistently tried to make things right after issues occurred, there were simply too many preventable mistakes during one stay. This is a beautiful resort with wonderful employees, but at this price point--and as Platinum members--we expected a much more polished, personalized, and consistently exceptional experience. Recovering from service failures is appreciated, but ideally, guests shouldn't have to experience so many of them in the first place.

It was really special and we've got to respect these incredible animals! The reef isn't the only way the hotel really lets you experience some of the island on site. The Big Wave shaved ice in the lobby is also some of the best you can have. As far as the rooms, in addition to stoves and washer/dryer, Westin beds are always exceptional. We were also situated at the Moana building which was definitely the best spot at the hotel because you get the full view of Black Rock and the ocean rather than the resort grounds. Highly recommend getting a room in that section. Additionally, they gave us champagne, chocolates, and a personalized card for our anniversary! The lobby had such amazing views. We also loved the pool. Lots of pool seats available unlike other hotels. I guess it helps that it's at the end of the strip so you don't really have as much crowds coming through. We grabbed some snorkel gear to explore Black Rock and it was full of marine life. What a beautiful spot (I grew up on an island myself and will tell you it's a legit snorkeling experience). The food and beverage options were limited. Breakfast was pretty pricey so we decided to go elsewhere to try a little bit of everything for meals which we were planning to do anyway. We did get food at the pool bar - karaage chicken and fries were so good! We went back for the fries and got a fruit smoothie. One downside is that since the Moana building was at the end of the property so we had to take several elevator rides through the hotel just to get to the lobby. That was fine since it encouraged us to get our steps in but could be frustrating. All in all a wonderful experience!

If you are lucky enough to get upgraded to an ocean view room, the sunsets are absolutely stunning and worth looking forward to every evening. The downsides are hard to ignore. The rooms are definitely dated, although they were very clean. The restaurants on site are expensive and the food was average at best. Breakfast costs nearly $50 per person, and the buffet was nothing special. For what the resort charges, I expected a much better dining experience. The staff were friendly and helpful throughout our stay. One tip: reserve your poolside cabana online before you arrive because they often sell out.
