Dr. Segil has been my neurologist for several years and has really helped me get my migraines under control. I've suffered with chronic migraines for over 30 years, ever since I was a child; sensitivity to light, smell, and sounds can make me nauseated and often worse (TMI - if you know, you know) for 12 hours or more when a migraine strikes, and I often feel weak and really out of it for a day or two following the migraine. These episodes, when out of control, can really wreak havoc on my life and make me very depressed. Dr. Segil has helped me get to a point where I'm experiencing less migraines, and it has greatly improved my overall quality of life. I'm so grateful for this and to have found such a compassionate, competent specialist. Wait times in the office are fairly short, and whenever I need to call or email the office, it's easy to get in touch with his office assistant, Amalia. It's rare to find such a kind doctor who really listens and cares, such as Dr. Segil. I don't have any friends who experience migraines, but if I ever come across anyone looking for a great neurologist, I would not hesitate to recommend them to Dr. Segil. read more

I had people telling me, "I can get you in with this doctor that doctor, they're the best in LA, They were on Grey's Anatomy, (lol) all the celebrities go to Dr. So & So, they're expensive but it's worth it because Dr. So & So is the "BEST" blah blah blah blah......." Only to end up feeling like something still wasn't right. Then I finally found one who got it, Dr. Segil. I like him because he's really upbeat, young (but don't let that fool you, it's hard to teach an old dog new tricks, just saying). He listens to you and he always picks up the phone and calls you back when he says he will .. how many doctors do you know who do that?. His brain is like a sponge and all he wants to do is suck up all the intelligence in his field. He's super smart. Dr.Segil must be one of the best neurologists you will ever meet. He is extremely knowledgeable, empathetic, professional but still caring. If/when I ever get bad news I want him to be delivering it. After a year under his care he referred me to another neurologist for second opinion but all she could do was have me examined for some extremely rare conditions because Dr.Segil had already ordered all tests and exams she could think of. Dr. Segil has been a lifesaver, both mentally and practically and I will be forever thankful! And you can not review his office without mentioning his amazing assistant Amalia. Dr. Segil is an exceptional neurologist. I am currently under his care for severe migraines that have affected my day-to-day life and I am seeing improvement as a direct result of his knowledge, compassion and diligent care. During his evaluation, he identified another issue unrelated to the migraines but scary when I blended the two issues together. He separated the two and reassured me of a positive outcome. Throughout the process he has been fully transparent, he simplified the findings to help me understand what was happening in my body and he gave me a practical path forward in my care. When I have a question, he responds so quickly (and each time he is kind, he shares his depth of knowledge, and I am clear on my next step). Think Modern Neurology Meets Old Fashioned Care when you think about Dr. Segil. This level of care is supported by his Assistant Amalia. Imagine being in the middle of the stress related to severe migraines and finding another issue AND having to deal with your insurance company. Not fun. Amalia untangled my issues. When we met Dr. Segil, we were in a terrible place. We had been through the ringer with different doctors, hospitals, and clinics. It wasn't until we met with Dr. Segil that our entire situation turned around. He not only provided us with extremely thorough care but he explained everything to us in great detail and spoke to us with emotional understanding. I saw a few reviews about Dr. Segil's membership fee. Or access fee. I don't quite know what to call it. Dr. Segil charges a $500 / year fee on top of what he charges your insurance (and whatever PPO co-pay you have). He will not see you unless you pay this fee, which it seems one must pay every year. I would maybe agree to pay such a fee if if was applied after my treatment. Makes more sense to me that after being seen and properly diagnosed and after I had evidence that his recommendations solved my condition, my doctor would earn a bonus. But this fee is an entry fee and simply allows you access to Dr. Segil. You can't see the doctor unless you pay it. I'm a fan of the free market and people can ask for whatever they want but there is no guarantee that this premium gains you anything at all... and even though I have the means and love white-glove service, I kinda feel dirty... Luckily there are amazing neurologists nearby. read more

Dr. Segil is a great neurologist and worth the cost to visit him. On my most recent visit I was surprised to find out that starting in January 2014, he is going to be charging patients a fee in addition to insurance. He outlined why he is doing this and it makes sense with all the changes going on. He treated me like a real person and clearly knew what he was doing. I'm one of those people that expects/demands that their doctor has both expertise in healing and a good bedside manner and Dr. Segil indeed has both. He explained what the tests were for and what was going on with my body. I will be returning to see him again to follow up on the studies he ordered and see if the medication he gave me helps. Dr Segil saved my life. So I think he deserves a solid Yelp review. I suffered two strokes in September, 2012, and Dr Segil was the neurologist assigned to me in the hospital. He was direct, clear, caring, and he treated me like an equal despite the clear doctor/patient divide. During my recovery process, he has taken an active roll in keeping in touch with me - not only during scheduled appointments - and even attended my stroke survival celebration in May, 2013, exactly eight months after my first stroke. Normally I recommend good service to friends, but thankfully, I have no friends in need of neurological assistance, so I continue to tell my story and highlight Dr Segil as the doctor who literally saved my life. Came in to see dr. Segil about a year ago to test for temporal lobe epilepsy. First thing he said was that I should be grateful to have friends in such high places that could get me in to see him.... Okay.... Then he asked me a total of 4 questions about why I came in, told me there was no way I had TLE but that he'd send me in for an eeg and mri as a favor to the referring doctor. Waited till the end of the appt to demand his $750 concierge fee which I refused to pay. Now, nearly a year later with a patient, thoughtful, helpful and intelligent neurologist I have been diagnosed with temporal lobe epilepsy. If only Dr Segil hadn't written me off as a waste of time, he could have not only made that extra $750 off me for his classist office fee -- but he could have made a whole lot more off all the visits I've had to make to the neurologist in the last 10 months, and all the ones I'll have to continue to make. Dr. Segil is so caring, knowledgeable, responsive and insightful, I sometimes wondered if I was his only patient (in a good way.) Never have I had a doctor take the time to thoroughly interview me for my history, and then explain both my disease and treatment options. He is extremely professional and really makes you feel like he understands exactly the underlying processes behind what is causing you to see him, and takes the time to explain it to you patiently in however much detail you need. I feel the need to respond to the negative review from Marina. I fully understand how she misinterpreted Dr. Segil's amazing bedside manner. While extremely professional, Dr. Segil also treats his patients with respect and as equals. He's younger, so I imagine this is quite a shock to patients of previous generations that are not used to this type of interaction from doctors. He may say something directly in the interest of educating the patient so that they may be informed fully about their medical care. From my perspective, he has just enough of a sense of humor to help with sometimes difficult or painful procedures, but at the same time takes you and your condition extremely seriously. I have never had a doctor be as thorough, detailed, clear, and responsive as Dr. Segil. When he's at the computer he's not ignoring you. He's documenting you. In the most detailed way possible as to minimize the chance that anything was missed. He really gives me a lot of confidence and I feel like Dr. Segil provides the best medical care in his field that is possible with today's science. read more

Personally, I've always found it tough to locate a doctor with social skills. Cliff tops the chart in that area. I can always go to an appointment knowing both the issue at hand will be addressed, AND he'll talk to me like a human being, not a test subject. I have no trouble walking in and saying, "Hey Cliff, it's my birthday, ya gonna write me that prescription for Viagra?" He knows his stuff too and is always prompt to reply one way or another. This human being is top notch. I've never seen a more organized office and a more interested doctor. My only regret is not finding him on April 20, 2015, when I went into an altered mental state, and would remain in severe critical condition for 19 mos. What happened to me is so off the wall, and I have not read anything like this and have researched 10k hours on Pubmed. I wish to God I met him day one. He calls you directly. The next day. He is thorough and stays on you like white on rice. He doesn't miss a beat. No one was/is taking my horrifying death reaction seriously, as I am not in medical books, as this is a new disease, created by an illegal cosmetic device and my body did things not seen in medical journals. I wound up w a severe ABI due to the length of time I spent in this condition, and he suggested that I get an MRI once a year to check for abnormalities. (My FMRI and prior EEG and neuropsych tests are a mess...I lived it, so I am not surprised)....low and behold, there was another abnormality and he was on top of it. He must love what he does, bc I have never seen organizational skills and attention to detail like this in my life. Yes, there is a 500 annual fee. I've spent 300k looking for a cure and it was at CVS for 5 dollars. The good doctors don't even take insurance. 500 dollars is NOTHING for this type of care. He is thorough. He called asap to refer me to an endo. I wish I found him the day I hit the floor and went into an altered mental state. He would have saved my life, brain, and face. He is remarkable. I just saw Dr. Segil for the first time to do a electromyography exam. Highly recommend Dr. Segil. He has the best bedside manner of any doctor I've met. Had a clear explanation for all my questions with a wonderful touch of empathy and humanity. Dr. Segil misdiagnosed me said I had Parkinson's. From a cursory examination I asked if I could get an mri to see if I really had it . He said that I had a ninety percent chance of having Parkinson's and didn't think it was necessary. Weeks later I insisted on having test at cedar's.the test came back,turned it was meds that caused Parkinsonism symptoms. I came with my 45 year old daughter to help her explain her medical history to Dr. Siegel. My daughter has had NF1 since she was a baby, and has had at least 30 major surgeries, as well as having had grade IV neurosarcoma in 1988. She needed to have a neurologist in LA to check on her condition, and our internist recommended Dr. Siegel. I can sincerely say that in the 43 years that I have been with my daughter at all the many doctors offices I have never met anyone as uncaring and as self centered as Dr. Siegel. He did not seem to know too much about the disease, and he seemed totally uninterested in my daughter's history, being concerned only with looking at his computer and asking questions that at times had little relevance. My daughter, having had many surgeries on her arm, does have her right arm quite compromised. Dr. Siegel referred to her hand as "disfigured" and "claw like", said "if all shit hits the fan" he has an oncologist that he likes, and at the end told her, "well, it's just an arm". My daughter cried all the way back to my house, and I was so angry I was shaking. In conclusion, I would absolutely not recommend this doctor to anyone. read more

A lot of the positive things written about Dr. Segil are true. He was very engaging during visits, but he scheduled frequent follow ups for something that other doctors had not. I began to wonder if the most important part of my anatomy to him was my wallet. This was confirmed this week when I got his letter saying he was going to charge a $500 annual fee because of Obamacare, without really explaining why it was necessary just some platitudes about how the health care industry is the most highly regulated industry in America. I am not joining Dr. Segil's greed club which may btw may violate the terms of his insurance contracts which are intended to apply to all charges for service. read more

On our first call to his office, they said: "We accept your insurance, but we need a $500 payment up front before your first appointment." And then they blamed it on Obamacare / regulation / blah blah blah. WHAT!? If Obamacare makes it SO necessary to start charging an extra $500 per patient, then why aren't ANY of my other doctors charging even a penny more? Could it be that it's just being used as a convenient excuse by someone with a political axe to grind? I'm guessing whether or not you'll pay the $500 is Dr. Segil's first test for brain damage. If you pay, he knows there's something seriously wrong with you. This is apparently a new policy in his office as of January 2014, and it's really too bad. From the earlier reviews here, he sounds like a very good and engaged doctor. Honestly, he's probably earned the chance to charge more money. It's just kind of sick that it comes at the cost of turning away people who can't just shell out an extra outside-of-insurance $500 bribe for every specialist they run across. More than anything else, I'm disappointed and frustrated that a doctor we need is out of our reach because of money. For the people who can afford him and other private doctors, he's probably 5 stars -- but for the rest of us, well, he simply appears to care more about money than about patient care. One part of the Hippocratic Oath reads "I will come for the benefit of the sick, remaining free of all intentional injustice . . ." Dr. Segil has been helping me with a pinched nerve in my neck, which has been the most painful experience of my life. After failing to get help from a Chiropractor and massage therapist, my primary physician suggested him. Since the neck is a delicate area, Dr. Segil suggested taking a very cautious approach with surgery as a last resort. He was extremely thorough in his tests, first by taking a history, then some movement tests to make an initial diagnosis, then an EMG to double check that there weren't confounding variables, then an MRI to confirm the diagnosis. The treatment has also been progressive, making sure we don't jump ahead. Thanks to him, my pain is almost gone and I won't have to undergo any surgery. He was also very forthcoming about the effectiveness of physical therapy and chiropractic treatment, which another doctor recommended, but which Dr. Segil explained isn't significantly effective for nerve damage like mine. This is my first Yelp ever as I generally believe one more positive review is unnecessary . I pay more attention to the negative ones. However , in this case I feel that Dr.Segil saved my life. This is what I experienced . The previous neurologist I saw was in a very highly respected neurology group, also in Santa Monica. He dx me with an incorrect , rare and extremely painful and debilitating auto immune disorder . I was told to wait 3 months for another visit . No treatment was offered. My records were lost and I therefore couldn't see another neurologist without the EMG/NCS. In order to receive my file , I finally had to make another appt to see the neurologist and finally the file was located. My questions were not answered and I felt like I was just another patient in a very busy office . In the interim, I continued to search for a highly qualified neurologist. I did extensive research . I read online that many people complained about the $500. fee charged before seeing Dr. Segil . YOU have to decide how much you want or need help vs how long you are willing to wait to find the right MD who may not charge $500. (annually ).I know everyone has different financial issues . Hopefully most people have $500. saved ,borrowed or they can put on a credit card for a "rainy day !" How much is your health and relationship with your Dr. worth? It was the best $500. I ever spent. Money aside , Dr. Segil is a human being with a compassionate heart who really listens and a brilliant mind . Dr. Segil immediately reassured me that while he must rule out the incorrect dx he was fairly certain that the issue was my neck and it could be resolved with the proper tests in a few days , including an MRI. Dr Segil did everything possible to schedule all the tests immediately . I could now "breathe and sleep" and go forward with my life knowing I was actually being cared for by a highly competent and extremely caring MD ! I finally felt like I would have a proper dx and proper care, with a Dr I could talk to and immediately trust. Also as a result of the incorrect dx I ended up having to have a spinal tap to definitively rule that out ! So what more can I say ? The initial neurologist NEVER even mentioned or considered my neck/ spine as a possibility . Dr . Segil thought that was most likely the cause immediately . He was right . All of this happened to me , it could happen to you . Please don't let it! I continue to see Dr. Segil occasionally as he wants to follow up to make sure that I get the proper care and see the right neurosurgeon to do surgery (if that's what is indicated ). One last thing, when I initially called the office to see Dr. Segil ( even though it was a Holiday weekend) I explained it was urgent , and got an appt the next morning! I met Dr. Segil in September 2011 after having been to 2 previous neurologists with no luck. In April 2011 I started losing vision in my right eye, having debilitating headaches and losing the ability to distinguish between green and brown. My first 2 neuro's kept telling me it would get better, that there was nothing wrong and that we should just wait and see. But I was in pain and waiting and seeing for the almost 4 months before Dr. Segil was torture. Dr. Segil's bedside manner was not at all what I expected, he is very thorough with his examinations and on our first meeting seemed preoccupied with getting the information in the computer system and rereading what the other neurologists had done previously. He sent me for more intense testing and told me that if there was something to find, he would find it. Though I was a little put off by his preoccupied manner in the the first meeting I quickly learned that his attention to detail is the reason behind this. During my second appointment, he sat with me and went through each set of MRI's showing me exactly where in my brain there is an abnormality. No other doctor I have ever seen has sat with me and shown me exactly what they see and what they are looking for in the testing they have done! He sat with me and explained exactly how we could treat my symptoms and exactly what he was afraid we might find. Due to the diagnosis, I now know that I will need to be in Dr. Segil's care for the rest of my life but without his tireless effort I never would have gotten the care I need. Over the course of our 6 month relationship Dr. Segil has proven to be the most caring and compassionate doctor I have ever had. I have been suffering from chronic lower back pain for the past 30 years. I have many physicians and specialist in Europe and in the U.S. I have had surgery, cortisone injections, and a multitude of drugs that didn't help. After a thourough examination and listening carefully, he then prescribed a medication that ended my pain in about two weeks.
