I used to like coming here. That's right, I wrote that in past tense. Recently I tried to stop by about fifteen minutes until closing time. As I was walking up, the gentleman who works in the store came out and started locking the door. I asked him if he was closing or just taking a break and he started shouting at me. He told me that the lights were off and he locked the door so yeah, the store was closed. He also told me I didn't need to walk up next to him and that I should give him some space. For the record, I was about 10-12 feet away from this gentleman, and actually took a step or two closer to him to try and figure out what he was yelling about. I told him I was asking him if he was closed because the sign on the door said the store was still open and I knew what issue I was looking for. No dice. I'm all for locally-owned small businesses and I realize that with small businesses like a comic book store that you might need to leave early or take a weird timed break. It's cool. This gentleman could have told me anything about why he was closing early. His kid could have had a basketball game. It might have been slow and he wanted to take his wife out to dinner because it was Friday night. Maybe he wanted to go and see a movie? Life happens, but I don't think I'm unrealistic in saying this gentleman was out of line. I didn't deserve a tongue lashing, especially when I was just asking a question and I was trying to spend money. I'm not sure if my $4 to $10 that I spent a month in here is a big deal and that's fine, but I won't be shopping here any more. If you decide to I recommend that you use this store as a last resort and that you double check to see if the store actually is open before you drive out. EDIT: PLEASE AVOID AT ALL COSTS. After I updated my review, the owner sent me a private message which contained a thinly veiled threat to harm me. Great little shop tucked away in old Overland Park. They have so much stuff. New comics weekly. If you started reading a new title, they probably have the back issues on the rack to either complete the series, or at least the storyline. Their TPB selection is probably the best in town (they always get the new ones in each week, too). I catch myself browsing too much, even when I shouldn't. David is super friendly, always willing to lend a reading suggestion, or just chat about that great title, or the one that disappointed you. There are so many hidden gems in this store, you'll find yourself coming back. Requires masks and hand sanitizer squirt required at the door. The New Owner (David) is amazing. You can tell he's a Comic Book fan by how he runs his store, greets everyone who walks in, and by the quality of everything on the shelf. Store is laid out well, clean, and very organized. Can always seem to find what I'm looking for, and they are usually in very good shape. Even comics from weeks past. If you're a pop culture junky, you owe it to yourself to check out Pop Culture Comix. To be sure, they have loads of comic books, but there's so much more packed into this little store. I went in for a quick look around only to find myself browsing the trading cards, nostalgic gifts, books, games and accessories, all the while wishing I was a kid again. When I think comics I think of the "man" characters -- Superman, Batman and so on. Pop Culture Comix had these guys and so many more: Xmen, Hulk, The Fantastic Four, Marvel & DC characters. All of the good guys and bad guys were there. The store's action figures ranged from music personalties like Alice Cooper and Elvis to cartoon, movie, and TV characters. Whether you're a Star Wars fan or a Simpsons junky, Pop Culture Comix can hook you up. I've always considered comic books a "guy" thing, so I was surprised to see all the female characters that Pop Culture Comix carries. Buffy the Vampire Slayer, She Hulk, Wonder Woman, Vixen, Hawk Girl, Dark Ivory ... you name her, they probably have her comic, her figurines or both. I had a great time looking around, and I saw some potential gift items that I haven't seen anywhere else. I came in with a friend for Free Comic Book Day, hoping to spend quite a bit on catching up my collection of a few series. After all, Free Comic Book Day is the day to show some love to local businesses. There were signs for the discounts of the day, which included 50% off of back issues. However, when we went to check out, we found out that the definition of "back issues" was at the discretion of the owner. Some of these comics were several months old, but suddenly were new enough to be exempt from the discount. When I tried to ask about this, the owner got an attitude with both me and my friend. He said "If I did that, most of the store would be considered a back issue". Yeah, that's the very definition of "back issue"; anything that's not current or very recent! We decided to not purchase much of what we planned to because of this. If you're going to offer a sale, offer it and don't stiff the customers based on your whims. I won't be back. If you're in JoCo you're better off going to places like Elite Comics or making a foray downtown to go to Clint's Comics. read more

Best comic shop I have been to in years. They have a really great store. Sid is super nice, he will happily chat with you and he will remember your name when you come back in time after time. They have DC Marvel, IDW, Darkhorse, Archie and more. So many comics to choose from and they even have a kids section in the back for stuff like Sonic the Hedghog, My Little, Pony and more. So if you like that you can get those here to besides the more popular things. They also sell all sorts of Graphic Novels and busts and figures of all kinds. They also have older issues for sale as well as a few box's of older variant covers. They also provide a loyalty card where you buy so many comics you get one free but the best idea is to subscribe to to comics using there website and comixology. You can get a bit of a discount when you subscribe. They even sell comics supply's, bags and boards. The store also participates in Free Comic Book Day, helping to raise food for the hungry. read more

It's been some months into the rebooting of my teenage comic book habit and I am really happy with PCC. Sid always has my stuff for me, knows about new titles to suggest, and doesn't mind my endless browsing of his little shop. I know that lots of comic book readers can be fanboyish, but stop in sometime and just relive that smell of your younger days. You might pick up a title. DC is probably at their best in decades, Valiant has recently relaunched, and Image and Marvel continue to put out good product. read more

I'm not a big comic book guy myself, but my husband and a good friend of his are and we've been to a number of stores in town looking for various things for them (and I'm starting to get in on the act, thanks Joss Whedon for some Firefly comics!). Of the stores we've been to in town, this is my favorite. Others seem messy, dirty, little grimy... Some are too crowded, some seem hard to find things... Here, the space is filled about right (not a big place but not too crammed with stuff so you can't move around), the place doesn't come across as gross or uncared for and I can find things without much trouble (and I'm not even all that well versed in all the different companies, etc and still I can figure out where things are). The prices seem right in line with everywhere else we've been. On top of that, there are a lot of the fun side things besides the comics. Lots of graphic novels, shirts, figurines, and other collectibles. They seem to have things pretty well covered. The biggest complaint I've seen by others is the attitude of employees (employee...). I can't say the guy that works there seems like the friendliest guy on earth, but he's never been rude to me whatsoever. And he certainly remembers anyone that might be deemed a regular and is rather friendly with them. He's even joked around with us many a time now. So, maybe he won't be super warm upon first visits, but he warms to you. And he's never ignored us or not answered questions and is generally quite helpful when asked for something and will offer info on something if he notices that you are showing interest in it. This has become our go to comic shop in KC and I'm certainly planning to continue to go back. read more

Pop Culture is definitely a hidden gem. While some comic book shops have a secondary (or in some cases, primary) focus on gaming, you won't find that at all here. You'll find collectibles, t-shirts, and of course, comics. The owner is a very friendly, and is always willing to make recommendations. He carries all the DC and Marvel titles, and also carries books by smaller publishers. I've never had a problem finding a title at Pop Culture. Everything is well-organized. read more

Old guy with silver hair is a jerk. I came in with my kids and he couldn't bother to help the ONLY PEOPLE IN HIS STORE. I asked a few questions because I was looking for a few issues for my kids, and was given a grunt and a wave. An instant unwelcoming feeling the moment I walked into this shop. This shop displayed horrible customer service. I was not greeted or acknowledged during my visit to this establishment. The employee or store owner ( whichever he was ) talked to the other patrons (regulars I assume) in the store, and simply did not express any interest to receive my business. I have never experienced going into a comic book store in which the employee/owner deliberately ignores you during the entire duration of your visit and shows no appreciation for your potential business. The sad part about my experience is that I actually found a couple books I was looking for and left them on the shelves due to their lack of customer service experience. read more

If there's one thing I love about Comic Shops, it's how much merch they can fit into small spaces. Very rarely do you find a shop in some high-rent, high-footage locale, that's just not the way they roll. Pop Culture is no exception, and it's so much more than comics, though I doubt he's missing many titles in that regard. Great selection of statues, collectibles, shirts, posters, etc, and perhaps the best selection of Action Figures in JoCo. Though it's a small market, he also has a great choice of kid's comics for the newest fans at home. The owner has always been friendly and helpful, and definitely is worthy of your patronage. If your looking for older back issues.. sadly smaller selection bit still always fun to look through. Has great selection in Image and Independent comics!! Also in Marvel and DC respectively!! They have back issues in the comics newly coming in selection at cover price which I love catching up on Comics I just started reading (ex. Suicide squad or Batman INC.) Best comic store in Kansas City metro area, bar none. I've been going to this store for 9+ years and even shopped at the old store in Mission before that, and I've had nothing but luck. Looking for new comics that came out on Wednesday and it's Saturday? He'll more than likely have the one you're looking for, or he'll order you a copy if you want. Looking to complete a run on a recent comic series? He's got a bunch of books still on the shelves, and tons more in the longboxes, bagged and boarded. It won the Best Comic Shop for Pitch Magazine for a reason. He has a little bit of everything. Comics, toys, shirts, everything. This is the place to buy comics and this is the place that I will always buy comics. Clean, easy to find what you're looking for, just the best place to go. Anything else I can say nice about it, you can assume I mean it. I love this shop and travel over 20 miles every week just to get my comics from Pop. read more

Great comic shop, best in the area! The comic selection is huge and the other items (shirts, action figures and trade paperbacks) are impressive. They've got a large children's section with comics and magazines, plus there are boxes of old comics to go through and choose from. If you are a monthly collector, the pull lists are always right and the comics are in great shape when you get them. Plus there is a large supply of bags, boxes and boards when you need them. The owner and employees remember their regular customers by name and are very appreciative when you come in and purchase something from them. read more

This is bar none the best comic shop in the Kansas City area. When I first rejoined the comic world in 2007 I frequented another shop near pop culture comix's location, this store had terrible inventory on current issues, and an indifferent staff who clearly could care less if I found what I wanted or even entered their shop. So I found and visited pop culture comix on a whim, and boy I'm glad I did! Pop culture comix has the best and largest selection of current issues from almost any publisher, a decent selection of back issues, a ridiculous amount of action figures, and almost anything else you can think of in you Nerd dreams. To top it all off, an excellent owner, Sid, who is helpful and makes great recommendations. Sid will go out of his way to get you want you want, and if he doesn't have it he'll probably order it for you. He treats his loyal customers with an amazing amount of care, and will keep a pull list for you if requested (he keeps a enormous pull list for me, and never misses a thing). Sid also provides something unique to any store I frequently visit, and that's a personal touch. Sid is friendly, and never fails to make his customers feel welcome. This is my comic store for life, and I'll never visit another. Do yourself a favor and check it out! read more

New to this area, the first thing my family did was to find a comic book store. After all, this is where we spend most of our time (and money). We were met with rudeness and employees who didn't care if we were there. I had a literal stack of comics in my hands (since I had not been to a comic book store since moving) and my husband dared to push the "Try Me" button on the toys on the wall. There was no sign telling him not to touch, and he wasn't a kid pushing buttons for fun, but because he was interested in the item and wanted to know what it did. He was told rudely not to touch because it wears down the batteries. If this is the case, then either put up a sign asking people politely not to touch, put those items behind the counter, or get new batteries. How are customers supposed to know what sounds a toy makes if they can't use the handy, built-in "Try Me" function that the manufacturer puts on the toy? Further, I wouldn't tell customers that have a huge stack of comics in their hands not to try something out. I put back about half the comics and only walked out with the "essentials". Then we went back to the store (you know, second chances) and the guy working there was just not overly friendly, didn't seem to care he had customers. The third time we tried, we had one comic to buy. Asked about board and sleeves (didn't ask the first time we bought since in CA everyone charges for them), and were told it was in the corner. Had to walk to "the corner" to get our own. Then was told they don't run cards under $5 (again, didn't see a sign). Asked, "Didn't you bring cash to buy that?" This is a debit card world so sorry, we didn't bring cash. He snatched back the comic and said, "Sorry!" Left without the comic. WOW. Not ever going back, even though it's close to home, carries lots of comics and action figures/statutes. We'll take our massive amount of business (which we spend a TON on comics and action figures/statues) to a store that cares about their customers and welcomes in new consumers. In today's economy, customer service and selection are essentials a brick-and-mortar store must possess in order to survive. I have visited this place 2-3 times. While I have found the selection to be about average, on each visit I have greeted the shopkeeper with a friendly and positive attitude only to receive disregard and even outright disdain in return. For example, he couldn't be troubled to assist a customer who waited patiently for several minutes as he incessantly dicked around on his cell phone. The shopkeeper acts as if people are an annoying presence in his personal space rather than a potential customer in his place of business. Courtesy, respect and kindness are clearly not part of this man's skill set. I am shocked that this store has stayed afloat for this long. The impending failure of this business will surely be met with resounding applause from the surrounding community. read more

Went in to find out information about a few comic books i own (quality, value, rarity - if any) and was not greeted or looked at. Walked up to the counter to initiate the customer/store relationship and was met with him taking two steps backwards and being called a smoker (in case i wasnt aware). After handing him my small stack of comics and simply asking for his opinion which i thought would be common to have posed to him he spent less than 30 seconds looking through and stacking back up and saying "not interested" as if i had begged him to purchase them from me. I was proud of my comics and only wanted an experts opinion with no intention to sell what i thought was treasure to me. Rude customer service if you can even call it that. Wouldn't go back ever. I am unsure how this old man stays in business. Better customer service at walmart on a saturday. Wow, just wow. All i can say now is go anywhere but here. read more

Been there Two Times in past two months-Old man in there is very Disrespectful-Rude-both times. Showed him some comics I had and had no clue on what they were or the condition they were in. Never said we wanted to sale them, just wanted Info on the condition and value. Flipped thru the first comic and said NOT INTERESTED so i left.I called him up and let him know his customer service is not good at all and I will never go there again-that's not how a business is ran buddy if you do read this. I have been to this shop a few times over the past 3 years. It is close to my work but it is not my primary shop, and honestly it didn't seem like he wanted my buisness at all. I got into comics a few years back and when asking questions to the owner he seemed very negetive and made me feel like I didn't belong in a comic shop. I recently went in to grab a few titles that were sold out from my shop and the owner actually wouldn't let me purchase a book that was on the shelf because he said it was a "hot" book and I am not one of his regulars. Mind you I am now very well versed in my comic book knowledge and spend around $150 each month on new titles. I understand that you have to stay stocked for your customers, but he had 6 more copies on the shelf. The shop is very well put together but his attitude and negitivity was disrespectful. ELITE comics is 6 min away and it is BY FAR the best shop South of KC. read more
