Closet Revival is a quaint boutique, perfectly situated on Newport's busy Broadway Avenue. It has vintage/consignment items and the owner is very friendly and helpful. This shop is just so much fun. Treasure awaits if you take the time to browse. Look up and down as well because there are so many accessories on the upper and back shelves. Today's finds were a green floral jacket, which is a nice piece for my fall wardrobe; a brand new black Marc Jacobs laptop/ iPad bag with vibrant splats of orange, purple, red, and tan priced at only $40. (I can wear that with a solid red or black outfit); and earrings made by a local artist. I did see two pairs of Brooks Brothers brand new boat shoes priced at a mere $50 each. The fashionista in me wanted one pair, but they were snug. If you love fashion, your statement pieces can be found at Closet Revival. Check out the Preppy Handbook, which sings its praises to fashion conscious Blair Waldorf wannabes everywhere! Of course, since she's one of my idols, I decided to visit yesterday in search of the perfect cocktail dress to wear for a concert production of Ragtime I'm starring in later this month. Boy, did I ever find one! To add to the amazing score of this gorgeous find, it was also just $40 and new with tags! For those of you in the secondhand clothing hunter world, that's a HUGE deal! The show is divided into two sections - consignment and vintage. Closet Revival mostly caters to women's fashion, but there are men's items in two limited spaces in both rooms. The vintage clothing is in remarkable condition, and they carry everything from gowns from the 1930's to unique 1970's jumpsuits, and a great collection of fur coats for winter. No matter what quirky item you need to make your wardrobe sparkle, they probably have it here! Granted, this isn't a thrift shop, so you're not going to find $2 dresses here. However, if you're willing to shell out a bit more for awesome vintage finds and high quality consignment, you'll have a great shopping experience here. Consignment items are in the $15-$60 range, and vintage in the $20-$100 range. Amanda and Joanne are wonderful, and super friendly and helpful. Clean and well organized! I hate going into used and vintage places that make me feel dirty. They didn't have a huge selection, but we are still in shoulder season. That's the thrill of the hunt! So first off, this is a BOUTIQUE not a thrift store. If you're looking for something cheap try somewhere else. That being said they've got a ton of options for both genders. It's a cute store with cozy fitting rooms. The best part is they have an entire room dedicated to formal and costume wear. Which is why I came in today. Stopped in with my favorite sister-in-law. We had so much fun! I found a beautiful sweater was $24 marked down 50%. So a whole $12. Googled the label a little later and found out that it was probably originally $250-$300. Score! Joanne was so friendly and helpful. She looked up my sis-in-law's name to find out that she had a credit lingering there. She had no idea. We both walked out with some pretty new (to us) sweaters and shoes. Vintage Heaven! If you're looking for beaded purses and other vintage items in great shape this is the place. Tons of shoes, belts, hats and even bathing suits right out of the 50's. My friend tried one on and we had such a laugh--it actually looked cute! There were some retro-stylish 60's dress and if I'd known how to sew I would have taken one piece I tried on, but the fit was just a little funky. It also had some stains that were camouflaged by the flowers so always check garments closely. I ended up with a 60's (maybe 50's) silver beaded purse for $28. Perfect for the Newport wedding I was attending that night. read more

Good for shopping, not so great as a consignor. You have to wait for three months before you can pick up a check, which is longer than I've experienced at other consignment stores. When I came back after the three months had elapsed, I was shocked to find that none of my items had sold, since they were mostly all relatively new, upscale pieces. The store is very crowded and hard to navigate, so I guess I shouldn't be too surprised. Also, a pair of shoes that I had purchased for $10 were on the shelf marked at $15- no wonder those didn't sell! I had been informed when I dropped off clothes that I could take back anything which didn't sell after 3 months.. However, the owner told me that she had no list of what I had initially dropped off, but I was welcome to look around and try to find the items which I had left there three months before. In such a crowded store, this was nearly impossible, and I regret not having kept an inventory of my own so that I could have known what to look for. I can only assume that I'll never see the money or the clothes again, which is very disappointing. read more

I have never really shopped in this store, but I finally decided to visit ( Mostly because I needed something for an elite event. ^^; ) So, I went in looking for something, figuring I wouldn't find anything that would fit my rather broad shoulders as well as my ......busty side. *ahem* The woman working the shop was more than happy to help me, I told her I was looking for a decent classy dress of some sort, and she immediately went to work searching the shop for me. She also informed me that one of the window pieces she had would most likely be my best bet, so she stripped down the manikin for me, leaving it raw and available for all eyes to see. So I took the rather adorable dress into the best fitting room I've ever laid eyes upon. No, really. Screw the fitting rooms full of mirrors -- I don't have many flaws, but sometimes just seeing all parts of myself in every which direction makes me irritated. Nope, instead it was one large mirror, more clothing hanging upon the wall, and an onslaught of vintage trinkets decorating the walls, and the corners of the changing room. Needless to say, it was a pleasant experience. Pricy, but pleasant. IT is vintage clothing, so I can't really blame some of the price tags. read more

My jewelry was taken by closet revival. Amanda claimed she didn't remember me handing it to her personally. Numerous attempts to follow up accomplished nothing. (phone calls, in person request for the jewelry back, emails). She claimed she didn't have a record of it, because she didn't handle the jewelry sales - in her own shop. I don't understand how a local business can get away with refusing to be responsible. Ive been consigning with closet revival since about 2007. Since the jewelry incident I have not consigned with her again. Attached is a pic of one of numerous pieces of jewelry that I gave her to sell - my gold and garnet bracelet given to me by my mom before she died. I actually handed her an entire bag of stuff like this. Including a silver Tiffany necklace and matching bracelet. The reason for this review is to hold her accountable. I don't want any other unsuspecting honest individual to hand over their family jewelry and get nothing back but an apology. read more

Much like the chain of "Second Time Around" stores that's cropping up in malls, this store has some really good finds from the goodwill arena. The problem for me being that I am just not willing to pay the premium for the collecting service that places such as this provide. I enjoy digging through the racks at goodwill and finding a blazer for $6. Instead you can come to Closet Revival and get the same blazer for $40-50. You pay for the service of not having to actually find the item. That said, they have a good collection of just about everything, if you're willing to pay new prices for used clothing. read more

This is the most amazing vintage store and the one to which i measure all other stores. I found my favorite vintage find here, great camel colored leather riding boots. I've been wearing them for years and they still get tons of compliments. There are 1000 ways here to up the ante on any outfit from shoes to handbags to scarves. Enjoyed going through the racks of well displayed items. The prices ranged from very inexpensive to some higher ticket items. The store itself is visual fun and I found multiple items that were worth my efforts. The store was very clean with no musty, moth ball smells that seems so common in second hand - consignment stores. I will be back for sure. read more

Beautiful, diverse array of vintage clothing. I loved searching the racks to discover vintage designer gems hidden amongst contemporary fashions. The prices can be a little high, but the quality is great. From the selection, it seems like they've raided the closets of some of NYC's most fabulous fashionistas in the 70s/80s/90s. Walk by here every day so I thought I would check it out. I spent some time looking through everything, but wasn't very impressed!

So I was searching for a hatbox and found one that I really liked!! I was ready to pay up to $100 for it because I loved it that much. I asked the saleswoman if it was for sale and she said that it was being used to hold a very expensive fur and that if the fur sold then I could come back and buy the box. Well, I am not from around here so I won't be back. But she did not seem very inclined to want to part with it. Next time just say A simple "no, it's not for sale". I was put off by her response. I didn't even bother to look at anything else. I just walked up to Salvation Army and spent my money there. 2 stars though for the cute box that I did not buy. Now this place is off the beaten path, literally! What a great FUN shop. It is packed with goodies, from Prada to Lily Pulitzer, you'll definitely find something in your size and to your liking. The coffee shop next door, which I can't remember the name of, is REALLY GOOD too. So if you get tired of the same ole', same ole', and have some time to go through LOTS of pre-owned goodies, make sure to stop here, and give yourself an hour. You'll need it!!! read more

I visited this store in hopes of finding a pretty vintage dress. It turns out that I did and it was one that actually fit me perfectly. The only problem was that it was out of my price range since I was getting ready to move into my first apartment. I told the saleswoman this and she basically asked me to haggle with her. She asked what the most I could spend is. I said $75. She led me on and then afterwards decided to tell me that the most she could take off is $5 since it's a consignment piece. Why couldn't she tell me that to begin with instead of getting my hopes up and wasting my time? I left so very disappointed and annoyed with the saleswoman. It left me with a sour feeling about this store. read more

I made $42.50 on a few of the items I consigned, so I guess Closet Revival rates at least 1 star. I went in at the end of 3 months to see if anything had sold and to collect what hadn't. What went wrong, let me count the ways...The consignor card states that items unsold after 3 months will be "moved along," unless you want them back. Not so! Judith told me that weeding out items older than 3 months is the LAST thing they do, only after everything else is done, which apparently never happens. (There are no dates marked on the tags, so this would be a difficult task, even if someone attempted it.) What this means is that one of your items could sell AFTER 3 months, when it was supposedly "moved along," and Closet Revival keeps ALL the selling price unless you go back after 3 months to inquire...and why would you if you thought it had been moved along? Apparently another thing that is not a priority is inputting the sale of an item to the consignor's account. Judith told me this can run about 3 weeks behind. Even though an item may have sold within 3 months, if it was the last 3 weeks of the 3-month period, the sale probably won't be input into your account,. If you are Johnny-on-the-Spot, like me, and want to get a check for items sold right at the end of the 3 months, some of your sold items will most likely not be included in that check. And how would you know? I asked Judith if they call consignors to let them know they have a check waiting after the 3-month period and she replied that consignors are "welcome to come into the shop to ask." Once again, if you are unaware of the 3-week lag, Closet Revival keeps the money. The shop does not seem that busy to me that sales cannot be input to consignors' accounts at the time of sale, or at least at the end of each day. Items are also mismarked, with one consignor's identifying number put on another consignor's item. I found this out when looking for my items that had not sold (this is the only way you will get them back.) A pair of shoes that weren't mine had my number on them. When I inquired about this sloppy bookkeeping, Judith replied, "It happens." When I mentioned that I had not had this experience in other consignment shops, Judith said that, "they would probably be happy to have me back." I asked Judith what recourse, if any, a consignor had when unsold items were not returned, and she replied, "You can go to Small Claims Court." She also told me that she had "no patience" for consignors coming in to pick up a few items that hadn't sold. All of this happened on the very day Judith admitted to me that she was pulling her own consigned items that hadn't sold. Apparently her items are more important than other consignors. Like some other reviewers, I find a lot of the merchandise overpriced (I have noticed a few items recently available at retail for less) and I also believe some of the items marked "vintage" are only in the opinion of the owners. All in all, I did not have a happy experience. Lest you think I caught her on a "bad day," I have never found Judith to be warm and fuzzy, even when I was in the shop as a buyer. I think what bothers me most is the careless attitude. Consign here at your risk and please keep an itemized list of the items you are consigning because the shop does not. read more
