One of the things I love about living in New England is experiencing all 4 seasons so fully. And because each season is so gloriously intense, I love having the opportunity to carefully select the appropriate wardrobe for each of them. Particularly for the wet, raw, muddy, cold weather that reminds us of the old country for which we are named, enter Royal Male. Despite the "Male" in the name of the store, there are clothes for both genders. This independently owned store could not be more lovely or charming. It's an absolute delight to open the door as you hear the tinkling of vintage bells to then find yourself transported into such an extraordinary place. What you'll find here are a fabulous assortment of high quality goods hailing primarily from Britain. I've always loved stopping by whenever I'm in Newport. The selection of goods is top-rate and the service is simply and perfectly top-notch. This is an absolute A-plus shopping experience. I am often disillusioned and wearied by most shopping experiences these days when no one seems to care or take pride in salesmanship. His extremely kind, knowledgeable and gentlemanly manner made my day as I pondered over the Barbour Beadnell versus the Barbour Beaufort style jackets before I finally settled on the latter. Etienne and I next tackled which color combination of DuBarry boots suited me best. It wasn't simple but his guidance was essential. The Barbour Beaufort I purchased is made to be a hunting jacket with a pocket in the back meant for game for example. I love the mole-skin lined hand-warmers and the secret inner pocket too. And although I'm not a hunter the longer length felt more protective and the pockets well-suited to fit things when I want to ditch carrying a handbag which is much of the time. It was nice to have Etienne to point out all the features. He told me he has several of his own Barbours and so knew the ins and outs first hand. There are gorgeous silks and woolens and leathers to be fondled and tried on. Yes, it all may seem quite pricey but these are things you will have forever. The looks focus on the traditional and prep which really never goes out of style. Purchases like this are money well-spent and you'll never be accused of being penny-wise but pound foolish. And oh be still my heart, not a thing here made in China or a third world country. I am thrilled with my Barbour "Beaufort-style" oil cloth jacket. I am now ready for almost anything nature throws my way. I can keep up with the hardiest of New England or Irish fishermen/women in my leather DuBarry boots. I'm told I could stand knee-high in a bucket of water for days in them and my feet would never get wet. One thing I like about Newport is that they really have unique merchandise in many of the shops. In an age where "good shopping" is sort of moot if you live in New York or, duh, have the internet, this is one place where you actually can find some unusual items. Royal Male has a lot of Barbour and St. James clothes, but also high quality clothing from smaller manufacturers. The best reason to shop there, though, is that the two guys who are usually in the Mary St. location actually know clothing . Yes, they want to sell you pieces, but they know their inventory, they know how clothes are supposed to fit, they have some idea if a color compliments your complexion, and they won't let you leave unless something looks good on you. Charming little shop that sells top quality British & Scottish clothing for both men and women. They carry a great selection of pieces from clothing companies such as Barbour, Hunter and Le Chameau. They stock gorgeous cashmere sweaters, great leather bags and fabulous outerwear. The service here is top notch as well. There was a lady and a gentlemen (not sure if they were the owners?) working when my husband and I came in to shop last week. They were both very friendly and helpful. The lady kindly offered to order anything I wanted that they did not currently have in the store in my size. I left there quite happy, having bought an adorable Barbour rain hat. If I hadn't recently bought myself a raincoat, I might have snagged one there as well ;-) Although this place is not cheap, you are getting top quality for your dollar. The prices are comparable to NYC boutique prices, which explains my lack of "sticker shock" here. I did notice quite a few really nice pieces on sale as well. This is the shop to go to if you are looking for timeless, classic, good quality pieces of clothing to add to your wardrobe - things that you can wear for many years to come. It was a beautiful sunny, though windy day today, so I decided to take a stroll around my neighborhood. Having passed by this cute little shop a million times, I finally decided to check it out. Normally, during the weekday when I work, I dress up in my nice clothes. But today, being the weekend, I wear jeans and sneakers and my warm Columbia jacket. As soon as I walk in, I notice the warm wool sweaters and tweed jackets. Everything does look high quality, but the prices were high - $895 for a wool sweater! Then an older woman greets me. She gives me the customary greeting and then immediately points me to the "SALE" section. Hmm... thanks lady... Not only are your prices exorbitant, but your customer service is snobby as well! A word to sales people: Never treat customers, no matter how they are dressed, with disrespect. Just because a customer comes in with jeans and sneakers does not mean you should judge them to be "poor" and hence not worth your time. read more

Royal Male is a wonderful little store staffed with very knowledgeable people. I hummed and hawed over a certain Barbour jacket for weeks, a Christmas gift for my boyfriend. I nearly ordered it from Orvis, but a friend steered me to Royal Male and I'm so glad she did. I like the idea of supporting a local family business, and they offer free shipping on orders of $150+. Etienne at Royal Male was extremely helpful when we spoke by phone & email. After telling him my boyfriend's height & weight, he steered me away from my original choice to a different style. Great window shopping, swank tweeds from Ireland, Scotland, and England. But unless you've recently discovered a diamond mine in your backyard, you'll likely suffer from sticker shock as I did. $125 for a belt was the cheapest I saw, $450 for cashmere sweaters and $950 for a tweed jacket. It's out of my league for sure. It's good brand names that ooze money, but again - rich people stay rich by penny pinching, poor people can't afford this stuff, so who is shopping here? read more

My wife and I are in Newport for a week on our "baby-moon" and decided to do a little shopping. We are from Bermuda, so finding quality apparel at reasonable prices is some what hard on a small island. Have only gone into the store to browse, I left with a pair of Austin Heller shoes, tie, and two pocket squares. While not inexpensive, I didn't feel like I got ripped off. So I'm a little surprised at some of the reviews slating the store and it's owners as "snobby" It's really too bad because Etienne couldn't have been more friendly and accommodating...in fact, we spent about 20 more minutes in the store just chatting it up. My father has lived around the corner from the Royal Male for ten years, and I often stop in when visiting. Yes, the prices are high, but if you're familiar with the brands they carry I'm not sure why you'd be surprised. They stock very high end British items that will last you a lifetime. I'm a little skeptical of the other reviews citing rude customer service -- the service I've received has been nothing but top notch. The son even helped me track down a Barbour bag I had been searching for and couldn't find anywhere in Boston. My father has purchased several coats from this store over the past decade and has had no problems with them. I was in search of a few pairs of high quality socks with fresh designs and I found them at Royal Male. The Corgi brand socks are hand-finished in Wales and are very distinctive. I could see that Royal Male prides themselves on classic tweeds and wares of the UK, but I was thrilled when I found out that they carried socks like this! Royal Male is one of the best shops in Newport! Both locations are superb and have the best quality goods. Outstanding customer service, super friendly and all around good people. Maurice and his wife have gone out of their way to offer great customer service. I have read a few reviews where people had sticker shock of what was in the shop. Sorry folks.. That's first quality shirts, Blazers, Jackets and footwear all made in England and Europe. This isn't the commercial stuff in the chain stores. I was in the store yesterday because I fell in love with an item in the window. The overly packed store was obnoxious, but not nearly as obnoxious as the man who clearly didn't want my business. I was ready to overpay for an impulse buy -- I'm a shopkeepers dream visitor! This guy, however, didn't want to help me find the window item nor did he care to answer questions. Benefit of the doubt -- probably the end of the season, and he has had it with tourists. If that's the case, I have very little sympathy. Their very user-friendly and easily navigable website was the first hit when I was looking to purchase the elusive Bond Barbour Beacon Heritage jacket. I walked into Royal Male at Bannister's Wharf this weekend with my husband and we both tried on a few coats together. We loved a few of them, but they didn't have my size, so the store owner (a lovely and very helpful woman) encouraged us to go to their Spring St. location for more size options. We did walk over, and there we met her not so lovely, and not so helpful husband. I found a beautiful cashmere scarf and encouraged my husband to try it on. The horribly rude man thought I was being pushy and asked if I was Armenian. He said, "You must be Armenian", inferring that Armenian women act a certain...pushy way? (I am not Armenian, but that is irrelevant.) I shrugged it off thinking that it was possible he was just being playful. I was wrong. When my husband tried on a $1500 coat that was clearly well-made and a very nice coat for someone - but not for us - I told him I didn't like it. Okay, okay... I said "it looks like a coat your grandfather might have passed down to you" (this time I was just being playful! Though it was my honest opinion - it made my 28 year-old husband look like an old man!) and the man obviously got offended and told me I didn't know what I was talking about. He was extremely rude and when I said that if I didn't like the coat then my husband wouldn't get it, he said, "well then your husband needs to find some girlfriends". The nasty comments didn't even end there. I dropped the scarf (one I fully intended on buying), my husband took the coat off, hung it up, and we walked out of the store. (In hindsight, he sort of wishes he threw the coat in the man's arrogant face, but we are classier than that, and we simply walked out.) I didn't let this ruin my day, but I did have trouble brushing it off - I just couldn't get over what an extraordinarily snobby man this guy was, and how he could be so rude! Royal Male gets some nice reviews because they do carry some interesting, old-fashioned, rich merchandise, but I will never go back, I will never give them any business, and I will be sure all of my friends know not to go there. Based on my own experience, as well many others who have reviewed this store, they obviously lose valuable clients every day because of the mean old scrooge running Spring Street. Beware of this man!
