Poor communication and didn't actually do the thing I payed for. I asked for a new tube in one of my tires and came back the next day as agreed, but they did not start the replacement. Now two months later the tire I asked to be replaced deflates much quicker than the "older" tube. read more

I've been into the store several times over the years for bike issues for my old road bike and now for my new road bike as well as my husband's bikes. They tuned my road bike a few years ago for a triathlon and did a great job. I recently got a new bike and was very excited to ride it but wanted to do a safety bike check first. They were busy and so was everyone else so I ended up going to another store that was able to squeeze me in for a bike check for $100. This other store did a fine job checking my bike but my shifters were still messed up when I rode it. Obviously my fault for being impatient. This other store was going to charge me another $60-$90 to fix the shifters and another $200-$300 for new tires, including installation. So I ended up going back to Clown dog - and should've waited and gone there instead to begin with. They did a great job consulting me on tire options and have access to order a variety of tires and it cost me only a fraction for installation and to tune my shifters. Solid. I'm a happy customer and they have become our go to store for all of our bike needs. This place is a gem. read more

Great spot to get your bike repairs. It's close to the UT campus, so super convenient if you are a student who relies on a bike to get around and live near campus. Cool stickers on the door. The staff was super attentive and helpful. I dropped off two bikes that needed fixing on a Friday and due to my forgetfulness and work ended up picking them up on Monday. Great shop. They've fixed bikes for me but they've also offered lots of useful repair advice for when I want to fix the bike myself. Several years ago I was looking for a particular model in a particular size. They didn't have it in stock so they send me to another shop that had exactly what I wanted. When I need something fixed, they turn it around in a reasonable amount of time -- often the same day or by the next day. They sell parts and tools for reasonable prices. If you want your $10K racing machine tuned, maybe you want a shop that caters to that select audience. For everyone else, especially those of us who prefer steel frame bikes, Clown Dog is a great shop. read more

this is my first time doing a review on yelp, usually don't think it's worth it but if you're a student in the area please just go to mellow Johnny's. I was having some play in my rear wheel and knew it was a hub adjustment but didn't have tools nor much knowledge and they wanted to keep it for TWO DAYS and charge me. Went to mellow johnny's and the attitude was way more welcoming and got me on the road again in less then 5 minutes and didn't charge me a dime! don't waste your time with these clowns they will just look at you like you're bothering them unless you have a bunch of money to blow. read more

This place is awesome! My bike was in bad shape at the surface, and as they looked more into it, they really found the bigger issues. Instead of just keeping the fixes at the surface level, he went beyond and recommended some more fixes (and asked me if that was okay). He even waived some of the charges which I really appreciated! Now that I have my bike fixed, i feel like I'm riding a completely different bike. Everything is so smooth and those sounds that I got used to while riding totally disappeared. We decided to check out their website in advance and then called to discuss if what we had chosen was a good fit for what we needed to accomplish and John and Andrew were great! This little shop is hands down the best bike shop in town. As a female cyclist, I sometimes find the male dominated bike scene intimidating but have always felt respected and supported at this shop. Whether you're a new or avid cyclist, these dudes create an open and friendly atmosphere free of the pretentious bullshit you can find at overpriced bike shops - did I mention they have the best prices in town? Avoid the big corporate bike shops attempting to take over this city (trek, specialized, etc) and get a dose of the old austin by supporting this locally owned spot :) if you buy a bike from them, you get free tuneups for a year! So, Yelp for long enough, and you'll see, either through the "owner reply" tool or backhanded "compliments," some lunatic proprietor hit back at customers for negative reviews, disputing their account, insulting them, or both. They're neither willing to fix the situation nor leave well enough alone. And, frankly, that's a shitty way to do business or go through life. But John at Clown Dog did the opposite of that. He contacted me immediately to apologize for my experience and make the situation right. Both through bringing my bike back in for additional service--discussing multiple options to make sure I was happy--and addressing in conversation the points that I made, it was clear that this is someone who values customer feedback and exerts the effort to solve problems. In short, it's an imperfect world, and things go wrong that cost time, money and aggravation. I may not have even effectively communicated what I wanted for my bike to begin with. But I left Clown Dog the second time happy with both my repair and the commitment to service that I saw, and went from a situation in which I was unlikely to return to one in which I'll return and recommend it to others. read more

I cannot speak highly enough about the guys at Clown Dog Bikes! I would give them 10 stars if I could. If you live in Austin this is the place to bring your bike!! They charged me far less than any of the quotes from local bike shops (and I called and stopped in at A LOT) and they brought my craigslist find back to its former glory in record time :) They went above and beyond in all aspects of customer service and repair! And they are open until 7pm, which makes drop offs and pick ups after work super convenient. Now here's a spoiler alert... I'm about to go on a super long tangent about all the "fun" my bike and I have been through in the epic journey to get a simple tune-up. It may be slightly more exciting than watching paint dry, but I make no promises. All of the pertinent info was covered in the first paragraph, except the cost break-down (skip ahead to the third paragraph from the end), so feel free to say peace out if you're not in the mood for a story. I purchased "Jenny" about 4 months ago from Craigslist. Within a day or two of riding her I could tell that she needed a tune-up. The gears would shift when I didn't want them to, or they wouldn't shift when I did want them to, and the brakes were weak at best. I started calling shops and stopping in to ones that I passed on my daily commute. The general consensus was that I would have to spend $40-75+ for some combination of tune-up, new gear shifter, derailleur, brake lines/pads, etc. One day a couple of months ago, while chatting with my favorite Cap metro driver, he was really putting the pressure on me to get my bike into the shop for a tune-up. He was concerned, and rightly so, that if I put it off I was going to get seriously injured. He told me if I wanted a great shop with very reasonable prices, that I should stop by Clown Dog. Super long story short(er)... I made an appointment the next week, got into a pretty serious bike accident the day before my appt (my bike and a pothole got into a fight and the pothole won, sending me flying superman style over my handlebars), called to reschedule my appt, didn't want to go near my bike for a couple weeks, called to cancel again, felt like a chump, and just started riding my rickety bike again. The guys were super chill about my flighty behavior and welcomed me back without judgement when I finally dropped my bike off this past Friday. By this time: 1. My chain had started to fall off almost every time I was in 7th gear, OH JOY. 2. My rear wheel was actually resting on my fender and not even 100% vertical, because the rear axle/gear shaft/something-or-other was jacked up. Riding wasn't even an option at this point. 3. I had not one, but two kryptonite U-locks attached to my bike with no keys to remove them. 4. And my poor wicker basket had finally given up the good fight. The only thing holding it onto my bike was the aforementioned U-lock. The guys assured me that with a quick tune-up ($25) and potentially a rebuild to that rear thingamajig whose name escapes me (max $22), that Jenny would be in great shape. Add on $10 bucks a pop to cut the locks and the total quote was about $70 bucks. I wasn't excited about the price but I knew it was more than reasonable and needed to be done. Fast forward to Monday and Bryce calls me up with stellar news! The rear thingamajig just needed some tightening/adjusting and was covered in the tune-up. Since the locks were close to each other, the guys did me a solid and only charged me $15 to remove the pair. This brought my grand total to a little over $40 bucks. I was almost giddy. Since I was feeling a bit under the weather I asked if I could pay over the phone and pick it up Tuesday. They said to take my time and pick up Jenny at my convenience. When I arrived yesterday my bike was fit as a fiddle and they had even zip-tied my poor basket back onto the rack. Clearly these guys really want to provide excellent service at a reasonable price!! They didn't try to sell me an unnecessary bill of goods like all the other shops in town. They are very knowledgable and have their customers best interests at heart. read more

Hubby needed his tired fixed for his mountain bike, we were afraid we would have to buy a new tire, but these guys knew just what to do and did it for rather cheaply and quickly. They don't push products, only what they know and what would be best for your situation. The store is very small, but that doesn't stop from people coming. These guys are fair, affordable, friendly, and great at what they do. They are a true local biz too. I bought what I am hoping is a bike for the next 20 years here. I spent more than I ever have on a bike, but a slightly used Surly Cross Check here was a hundred bucks cheaper than anywhere else in town. Even the big box bike stores wouldn't go that low. I had them soup it up to my specifications and they were so cool about not charging for this and that and swapping out things (handlebars, bike rack, gear placement) until I was happy. Super happy. And they charged me almost nothing for it. I've had a few hiccups with the bike and they basically have fixed things for free a few times. If you are looking for a bike shop to fix your bike up, go here. None of that bike shop attitude here. They don't talk down to you and they do great work. And they won't cheat you. My daughter is an incoming freshman at UT and I was there this weekend helping her move in and we looked at a bikes there and found one that was perfect for her and it was even on sale for the new college year. Even though they were slammed with incoming college kids and their parents, everyone was friendly and helpful and patient. Vitas was especially helpful. They didn't charge for installing the bike rack above the rear wheel that we bought at the same time as the bike and we had our own U-lock but I lost the bracket that holds the lock on the frame so they just gave a lock bracket one for free!! Despite the fact that these guys are practically on campus and have a semi-captive audience...they are super friendly and very helpful. Located in a small unremarkable building a few doors down from the infamous Crown and Anchor Pub, sits a small unremarkable bike shop. A bicycle-lined walkway guards the door and inside the entrance a bearded Bryce sweatily toils at the crank while a sideburned Mike greets incoming patrons. A student on the cusp of manhood enters, dragging a bent-wheeled bike by his side. Man:Uh, 'scuse me. Mike and Bryce both look up. Mike:What seems to be the... Mike's eyes drift toward the wounded bike and settle on the back wheel. Mike: Ah, what happened there? Bryce looks over without ceasing his current triage and quickly diagnoses his next patient. Man: I was just sitting there. (Pause) Not sitting, but slowly riding up to a stop light like anybodyelsewould, when some guy in his SUV suddenly pulls out of traffic and clips my back wheel. (Man swings one hand into the other causing a loud *smack*) Didn't even stop as I flew over my handlebars. ASS. Mike:That sucks. You al'right man? Mike flicks his eyes in the direction of the man's bloodied legs. The Man looks down and shrugs. Man: Oh. Ya. Just some, uh, strawberries? Raspberries? I duno, some sort of bloodied fruit. (Pause) Ya. I'm fine. Just need this guy (shakes his bike) fixed. Mike: No problem. It'll be 'bout five minutes. That ok? Man: Ya, that's awesome. Three minutes elapse and Mike retrieves the man from outside. Mike: Al'right you just owe us for the new wheel, $56.37. (Pause as the Man reaches for his wallet) We went ahead and checked your cables, break-pads and derailleurs to make sure everything is working how it's supposedta. Man: Oh. Uh, how much was the tune up? Mike: No charge man. Man: Shit, really? That's sweet! Mike and Bryce chuckle. Mike: Can't sendya backoutthere for you to realize you can't stop or shift. You'd just be right back inhere. Man: I appreciate it. Payment and receipts are exchanged. The Man nods to Mike and Bryce in appreciation as he walks his rehabbed friend out the door. He looks behind him as he pedals off, looking back at the unremarkable building and the unremarkable bike shop, but remembering the two remarkable men. read more

Someone/something is out to get me and my bike; this is the third time I've crawled to Bryce in what seems like 1.5 months. Parked my Vega outside the gym. 1 hr later the front tire is flat. Never fear, Clown Dog is [nearby]. Walk over, Bryce discovers the front valve is completely ripped off. A bike hate crime? Maybe. But haters are gonna hate, so the only thing to do is replace the inner tube and re-hook the brake system, with Awesome Bryce Labor, coming to a grand total of $10. I ask him which bike shops up north he'd recommend as I'll be relocating soon, lamenting Clown Dog won't be within riding distance. He suggests Buck's Bikes and Bicycle Sport Shop, thoroughly suggests to check out larger retail stores for my helmet-shopping needs, and recommends to got to BSS before BB. Seriously. I wish I had discovered Clown Dog before now. I used to take my bike to where I purchased it, University Cyclery. In order to get your bike repaired at University Cyclery, you have to make an appointment and give up your bike for a few days, depending on the work. Not only that, they guilt trip you into buying more accessories and try to make it sound like your bike is one sharp turn away from exploding. Sorry, this is a review of Clown Dog, not University Cyclery. So lately my bike's rails had been shifting out of gear whenever I went up hills, thus thwarting my stride. I took my bike into Clown Dog and told them I thought I might need a new derailleur (mucho expensive) and some new pedals. At this point, I was prepared to drop around $100. (In case you didn't know, bike shops make their money off of accessories and labor. Selling bikes doesn't return much profit) I even told the guy I needed a new derailleur. Basically, I set myself up to be exploited. But no. Clown Dog's bearded biker chose the ethical way out. He told me it was just my cable and that he could fix it in 10 minutes for $10. I was blown away. Not only did he offer to fix my bike now, I wouldn't have to give it up for a few days or sell my body to pay for the repair. I also bought some pedals and he installed those for me. The pedals were by far the most expensive item--true to form, but that's okay, I know a humble bike shop has to make money somehow. Nevertheless, I walked out of Clown Dog impressed and pleased. Clown Dog exhibited honesty and professionalism. For that it gets top marks. read more
