After researching a bunch of bike shops in the area and visiting another, I decided to come here. It's a non profit so they have a ton of bikes that are donated which is pretty cool and community oriented. Steve helped me find a nice bike out of their selection and was honest taking the time to make sure it was something that would fit me and be comfortable. He also helped me find a bike rack and even helped me install it on my car. Now I have a excellent second hand quality bike that was inexpensive and I'm excited to ride around in! An awesome organization!! I Was in Austin for a month and bought a bike on craigslist for the time I was in town. I dropped it off here the day I left, and it was so easy. I have two shops I go to the most: YBP and Monkey Wrench. I love going here, simply because of the environment and the small components that may or may not be there. The coordinators are nice and knowledgeable, and will help guide you to what you need to do. Because this is a community bike shop, not everything is as spick and span as someone might expect of a typical bike shop. However, that does not mean it isn't organized. Work stands are located within one half of the building, tools, components, tires and everything else needed to build up a bike are located on the other half. They have an upstairs storage for even more bikes, and the checkout is at the front. Bikes ready to be sold are also up at the front. If you need a few parts, or only have a frame, you'll definitely want to stop by here to see what you can use to build up your own bike! An important part of YBP is that they will teach you what you need to know, so that in the future, maintenance becomes easier. They also offer a Earn A Bike program, where someone could volunteer x amount of hours, and after a list is all completed, a whole bike is basically theirs to keep. read more

Yellow Bike Project is an amazing resource in Austin. In the early days, they used to fix up junked bikes and put them on the street for anyone to use. The problem with that concept was that they would get collected by exporters who would truck them down for sale in Mexico. Since then, the shop has expanded and the volunteers have executed some amazing projects. After hurricane Katrina, Yellow Bike Project donated several hundred bikes to the refugees downtown so they could get around for free. For you, the reader, these are the attractions of YBP: 1. Cheapest shop in Austin for buying a used bike. The only place cheaper might be a garage sale, but it won't be refurbished. 2. Classes on how to fix a bike. 3. Tools for you to work on your bike at the shop. 4. A huge assortment of parts available for very cheap. Great for fixing your existing bike. 5. You can donate old bikes and get a tax write-off in April. 6. If you get busted for a DUI and have your license confiscated, YBP can get you mobile again with a bicycle and can also put you to work fixing bikes to fulfill your community service requirements. read more

I love this place. I've gone a couple times, and everyone there is super friendly and helpful. I was a little intimidated at going at first, as I am a clean shaven business professional with a short crew cut, and I have had issues with the east side-hipster community giving me incredibly poor service in the past. This was not the case here. The people working here are just regular, non-judgmental people. People who are passionate about bikes and helping others. Does this mean they are going to fix your bike for you? No. But they will hold your hand, pat you on the back, point you in the right direction, and tell you that they believe in you! I definitely suggest checking this place out, as they have gobs and gobs of great tools for you to use to fix your own bike. What to say about the Yellow Bike Project... First off, it's a big warehouse packed to the gills with Bikes and bike parts. Also with people working on bikes. According to their website, they are an all volunteer non-profit which aims to eduacte and promote pedal-power. So if you go in with a bike problem, the volunteers will show you how to fix it and give you a hand if you have trouble. I believe they also sell whole bikes that have been rebuilt from parts. I needed to replace a broken pedal cage on my 10+ year old road bike and figured this would be the place to fix it. After searching through Bins and Bins of parts I did manage to find EXACTLY what I needed. SCORE! However, the system of payment for said part was a little hazy and finally someone just said I need to leave a few bucks as a donation and that'd cover it. Done deal. What a cool concept. My husband has fixed up his bike, and bought me an old semi-working bike and got it up to speed for me here. Then, when I needed to upgrade from a hybrid to a road bike for a triathlon, he also got my new craigslist-purchased road bike into great shape after a visit to Yellow Bike. The employees are helpful from right when you walk in the door, looking clueless. They know their stuff. Prices are fair and reasonable, and they ask for donations, so pay as you wish. After combing craigslist ads for a full 4th of July weekend in search of my perfect bicycle to no avail, a lightbulb went off in my head to check out Yellow Bike for their Ready-to-Ride selection. (My husband purchased his Trek bike w/helmet for $100 from YBP's Ready-to-Ride section!) I popped over to east Austin after work yesterday to check out their selection. I walked away with a CRAZY INEXPENSIVE Trek 8000 bike. It's a beauty! The volunteers at this location were extremely helpful to make sure my bike was good to go before leaving the store. I rode it around the block to make sure it was safe for the streets of North Central ATX. They accept cash for the purchase of bikes and bike parts. They're currently accepting paypal payments for community support to build their new location at 12th & Webberville http://www.austinyellowbike.org/home.htm. YBP is an amazing cause at this insane time of $15/gallon gas. (well...it might as well be $15.) I'm very appreciative of this organization from saving me from the stress of purchasing a lemon off of craigslist. I could not be happier that I went here. Everyone there was immensely helpful and friendly. If you are new to Austin and need a bike, make this your first stop. If you aren't new to Austin and need a bike, you should also make this your first stop. I know almost nothing about bikes except for how to ride one, but I left here with a comfortable commuter bike that I can wear a skirt on and I can take the front wheel on and off of it. I love it! I went on Saturday (always check the website for their hours) to get help with my brake. Something happened and it was hitting the wheel. I told one of the volunteers my problem and they helped me solve the problem explaining what it was and why it happened. They also showed me how to easily remove the pedals. IF YOU DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT BIKES: Take it somewhere that will do it all for you! Yellow Bike is all VOLUNTEERS!!!!!! They are there to watch things and answer questions!! They help if they can, but no one is gonna be there to hold your hand and tell you what you need!! YOU need to know what you need and some knowledge of bicycles and how to repair them! They are extremely helpful and creative if you need parts for your bike!!! SO its best not to complain if you have no idea what you are doing. The Yellow Bike Project is a fantastic concept executed very well. The best part about the YBP is if you think it could be better, you're more than welcome to help make it better. You can learn everything about lots of bikes while volunteering, or just working on your own bikes, at the YBP. I knew nothing when I got to Austin, and I now feel comfortable working on my own bikes without supervision...all because of the volunteer shop coordinators at YBP! Once you know what you're doing you can just come in and 'rent' the tools for the time you're there. For those of you not in the know, this is amazing! Most cities don't have co-ops (ahem, DC), and those that do usually charge an entry fee (grr, Cleveland). On that note the YBP is not a free bike shop; you can't just bring your bike in and have someone fix it. People will help you, you might get conflicting advice, and you'll probably screw up a few times before you actually 'get it', but no one will just fix it. I've definitely busted things on my bike I didn't even know existed (star-nut?..?), even when working alongside coordinators. You need to be flexible at the YBP. Nothing will work out perfectly...you're learning!...the coordinators are learning!...we're having fun learning!...and we're not getting upset when we break something! Everyone here is a volunteer, many with no actual bike shop experience. Don't just stare at someone working on their bike waiting for help! Ask people for help...most will at least point you in the right direction. My YBP chronology: My first bike (junker 10speed) was bought at the YBP for $40. I learned how to adjust the derailleurs (the gear shifters) and brakes at the YBP and the bike ran well until it was stolen. I built my second bike (junker single-speed) at the YBP learning how to rebuild wheel hubs and bottom brackets. This bike ran well even after I gave it away. I have done adjustments on my fourth bike (old mid-range 10speed) at YBP. I rebuilt my sixth bike at YBP (a really nice, newer 10speed that was abandoned at my DC job). I gave the YBP my seventh bike (an old mixtie 10speed) to sell for their own benefit after rebuilding it here. I put together my eighth bike, ordered on ebay, at YBP (a brand new single speed). read more

I really wanted to like this as a concept, but now I'm not so sure. I went here on a Saturday perhaps during the hottest, busiest time of the day so I might have had an exceptionally bad time. My bicycle was (or should I say is) making a grinding strange noise during pedal rotation, the purpose for my visit. I couldn't get anyone there to actually help diagnose my problem instead I received quick incorrect answers and was told that I was in need of a new chain. I was there for like 3 hours after that, trying like hell to remove the pins from my old chain and set the new one up and size it correctly. Every time I had a problem I waited a long time to be helped, and received little to no helpful information just 3rd grade teacher responses like, "Now what do you think you need to do?" If I knew I wouldn't be here, now would I? Recently I found out that they gave me the wrong size chain to put on (it's too wide) now I have to take my bicycle to another place and hope they can help me understand. Oh and do you remember the reason I went there? Grinding during rotation, that is still there! At least I now know how to put a chain on, and how to avoid to wrong size. read more

I had just bought a bike to get more exercise for my self and to reduce my carbon footprint. The bike needed work and a friend suggested I goo to the Yellow Bike Project. I did not want to just take my bike into a place and get it fixed, I wanted to learn how to do maintenance and repair. Rob, Tony and Zach, the lead coordinators were helpful and knowledgeable. They taught me how to change the tires, how to tighten the pedals using a pedal wrench (new term for me), and how to adjust the brakes, and what tools to use. I went during one of their Open Shop sessions in the evening. Everything was reasonably priced and they recyle resources. I highly recommend you use the Yellow Bike Project. I couldn't be more happy with my experience at the Yellow Bike Project! Earlier this year I was looking to purchase a bicycle to use for both commuting and for recreational use. After a little research on the internet, I found myself at the Yellow Bike Project. The guy working the front desk was very helpful and informative. He explained a little about the YBP mission (they are a non profit) and the three different options I had to procure a bicycle for myself. These options were: 1) Purchase a used, but completely overhauled bicycle from their sale rack. 2) Purchase a project bike, used parts and assemble on your own for free in their shop. You have to do the work, but their are always very knowledgeable volunteers working the shop floor to give you instruction and tips along the way. 3)Earn yourself a bike in their "Earn a Bike" program. The requirements for this program are that you volunteer 24 hours in a three month period and complete a bicycle overhaul checklist. Once you have completed both requirements you are then able to choose any project bike available to put together and overhaul for yourself. Once you complete the build and overhaul checklist, the bike is yours free and clear! I understand option three may sound a bit complicated, especially if you are not very mechanically inclined. But, I assure you it is pretty basic mechanics and the entire process is very rewarding. I chose option three having not done anything mechanical in quite some time and had no problems. I even took my two boys there for their "Kid's Earn a Bike Program." They both were able to complete the checklist with limited supervision and they are still in elementary school. The kid's program is awesome. It teaches kid's the value of hard work, how to repair and maintain their own bicycle and of course mechanical skills. The volunteer's at YBP are great teachers and really care about the Austin community. My one bit of advice would be to be patient. There are like 14 open work benches that fill up every shift and there are normally only 3 to 4 volunteers working per shift. So, at times they can get a little busy, but they always make it a point to take care of everyone in an orderly manner. read more

One of my favorite places in the world to be. They will teach you to be a bike mechanic if you have the interest to learn. You could spend 5 years here learning about bikes, and still have more to learn. Simply the best place to bring a broken bike if your repair budget is 1/10 of what the shops want to charge you. I think the Yellow Bike Project is a great thing for people to have bikes fixed and learn how to work on bikes, BUT I go in to "shop" and buy parts and the girl there accuses me of being a hoarder because I said I like to keep a bit of surplus because I work on bikes. Where does she come off!? Then a more recent visit she asked if I was fixing up bikes to sell on Craigslist. What the bleep?! Maybe I am and maybe I am not. That is none of your freaking business. Are you going to charge me more money for getting rid of parts that your facility has too many of that you only end of recycling for metal anyway. They charge too much and they last guy said I was low balling the shop when he asked what I wanted to pay and did not like my quote. The staff needs too stop asking what we want to pay and then saying that is not enough. I give more money when I pay less. Well...I sell all the parts on ebay that I find at YBP and I always ask a certain percentage price for the amount they wanted at the counter..just kidding. Most of the staff has always been nice and friendly but keep your nosey personal questions and comments to yourself. read more
