I wouldn't normally trade a night of dancing in NYC for a night out in NJ, but my best friend and I decided to check out "Feather's" one Thursday. As apparently one of two gay places in North Jersey,* Feather's juxtapositions all the gay bars in Chelsea and Hell's Kitchen I've come to know. While NYC gays are finely manicured, if not a bit bitchy on occasion the gays inhabiting Feather's are much more laid back if not altogether a bit awkward. Unaware that it was "Latin Night" at Feather's I was in for a treat, complete with a drag show and booty shaking to Shakira, learning to take my first shot of Tequila,**(***) and losing my jacket. This is where the story gets sad, not because I was totally sober, and a merging of being a space case and hard of hearing led to my jacket getting lost; not because I've had the coat for years and dubbed it "Pet;" and not because it was ridiculously cold out; but because it was MY token jacket. I HAD to get it back And easily enough I did, I called Feather's the next night and picked it up, everything was in the pockets and after euphorically hugging the entire coat room staff and the bouncer for finding my coat, I can take on another winter with "Pet" _______________ *Deko, the OTHER place is only gay on Friday nights, but for people like me, who are gay all week long it's nice to have a place like Feather's **It was Latin Night after all ***It was only $4, so drinking here wont burn a hole in your pocket. read more

Straight guys, I know what you're thinking. "Why the hell would I go to a gay club?" Answer: nice atmosphere, great music, cheap drinks, and surprisingly enough, lots of cute straight girls. Always empty before 11 or 12. Why most people decide not to get the most out of the $5 cover I'll never understand. For whatever reason, this place only gets packed at the last hour or two. Wednesdays are $2 drinks before 11, Thursdays are Latin nights. I just went last Thursday for the first time in over a year and was pleasantly surprised by all the renovations they did. Lookin good, Feathers! There was also a short drag/comedy show which served as a hilarious icebreaker. Drinks are strong and cheap! $3 on Thurs for well drinks, they're small but don't skimp on the alcohol. There's several bars on each floor for your lushy convenience. A club with no dress code? Yes that's right boys, you can wear tank tops right along with the girls (or no shirt at all, if you so please. It does get hot and sweaty on the top floor.) Always a great crowd! DJs play great music and do an awesome job of getting everybody pumped. Everyone is super friendly and fun, which makes Feathers a great place for making new friends. Stop making assumptions! If you get in early enough, cover is waived and you get $2 drink specials. Their well drinks are higher end, so you'll be nice and shwasted early on and can spend the rest of the evening dancing it off. When my friends and I go, we always spend the majority of the time on the top floor, dancing our hearts out. Feathers is very accepting of everyone. I was here for the first time this month and I was pretty impressed (And I had good company so that helped too... ;). I like the place has a cool layout, very clean and sophisticated. The second floor has a dance floor where they play latin and pop music. The drag performers here were great! And for some reason I found myself enjoying the salsa and merengue music, which is not normally my thing. The drinks were good and strong and cheap - Thurs night margarita specials!! If you've gone out in Jackson Heights it's a similar vibe but classier overall. The crowd here was not much different than many Manhattan bars, with many douchy gays but the bartenders were friendly. Well tonight was an horrible night at this place. I was denied re-entry for no apparent reason. Maybe it was because am black or maybe it was because the bouncer was having a bad night. But there is no sign that state there is no re-entry. They even called the cops on me. I was not arrested because I didn't do anything wrong . But the bouncer felt I should not be allowed in . My brother and his partner were visiting and we decided to check out Feathers. We picked a good night to go because some of the drag queens for RuPauls drag race were there to perform. We did have to pay a $15 cover charge though. We went up to the bar and they got to meet the drag queens; which were super nice. The bartenders were nice, too. They did not have any seating...standing room only. I did not like that at all. I was wearing heels and my feet were killing me. We awaited for the drag show for a good two hours..and when they came out the three of them sang one a piece and then they were done. That was lame. But the bar seems like a good place to dance and party..the no seating thing is a turn off. Also upstairs there is only a men's bathroom and the downstairs bathroom is unisex and it isn't the cleanest thing in the world. read more

Great place but there's some pros and cons. great place for girls night or anyone really. Pros: good music, nice people, great show, cheap drinks, Cool go go boys, cheap cover fee, and funny drag queen. If you are a straight gal don't worry you won't get molested by man. :) Cons: it is extremely suffocating after a while up there it gets so hot you can't even breathe. I had to keep going away to catch my breath. You also have to go later, do not show up around 10 the place will be almost empty. Went here on a Thursday night with a group of coworkers and friends. Surprisingly it was very busy for a Thurs night! Good mix of music. Good drinks. There were also drag queens performing throughout the night. It was an overall "fabbbbulous" night out at this local gay bar/club. Heard Wed night was a good night to check out as well. Always a good time whenever I come here!! One of the few gay clubs in Jersey that are actually reasonable with good prices. In my opinion, $40 is the minimal that you should carry with you; it's just enough to have about 3-4 drinks all for yourself, leave tips and pay for cover too. Cheap drinks with plenty of alcohol, charming bartenders, fun dancers and amazing music each time! Forever wishing this place had a third floor or a wider dance floor since this place does get a crowd especially on a Saturday night but I manage to pass through the crowd...however, my drinks barely survive, so there's that. Also, be careful with who you attempt to hook up with because apparently everybody knows everyone in this club and my friends had to learn it the hard way. This place ain't it when it comes to a Grindr meet up. Hilarious stuff but you have been warned! read more

We got here early on a Saturday, about when it opened actually. As we walked up the security man Jeff was very friendly and the coat check man Vince was extremely welcoming. It's a mandatory 3$ each for coats and 10$ to get in. We went straight to the middle bar and joey was our bartender.He was very nice & helpful. Oh yeah! As we walked inside they also gave us 2 free Christmas stockings. We got 2 NY Giants tee's and 1 Modelo tee and like 3 NY Giants coozys (or however u spell it..) & modelo key chain bottle openers along with some yuengling Santa hats.We were chillin downstairs for a bit and my bf went to the dj booth and asked if hey would play 2 chains and the dude says he doesn't play hip hop, mainly house and trance. He asked if he would play bassnectar, he responded who is that..(uhh lolok). Anyway they tell us they have an upstairs dance floor w dj and bar, we eventually get up there and my bf goes to that dj booth and asked if he would play 2 chains lol and his name was dj John and he INstantly! yelled very rudely and told him to go away?! I mean there aren't many gay bars in north jersey (if you know of some let me know!) We took an uber like 30+ minutes to get to this place. The drinks were strong and pretty cheap, plus the food menu was still open and it was late. Nothing too exciting on the menu, just fries and other finger foods but I will say the fries were hot and delicious. We were probably the only girls there which sucks but it was fun to people watch. The downstairs area had maybe 8 people but upstairs was popping! At least 40 people packed into a small space dancing. Wish they played some hip hop but other than that it was okay. Feathers...the first gay bar I'v been to, thanks to Tony Mona *heart* Place is full of wood, in more ways than one (haha). The people are friendly, the drinks are very well priced & admission is cheap! Having 4 bars in the place helps spread things out abit. I'm a straight woman...I go with gays & I bring my breeder friends...nomatter who I'm with, we always have a good time. The dance floor might not be packed all the time, but hey, better for us. They play good music..a mix between 80's up until 2011. & I have to say, one of the best New Years I'v had in awhile. PACKED. I enjoy feathers if its a sit down at the bar & bullshit night or if its a night on the dance floor. No complaints. Feathers has given me so much that I don't even know how to begin to give back. When I started going, I was just officially coming out as a lesbian and I enjoyed the atmosphere. As someone who is used to being made uncomfortable by drunk straight men at regular bars, I felt very safe here. It wasn't until I started making long lasting relationships with the staff that it became the truly special place it is to me now. It all started with Jeff, a security guard. I am an on and off cigarette smoker so I spend a lot of time outside. Jeff and I have had conversations about everything from mental illness to spirituality to my love life. He is like the older brother I never had. I would trust him with my life. Then I began to create relationships with the bartenders. Paul and Eddie are absolutely wonderful people. I only drink seltzer or Redbull because I don't drink alcohol but they treat me the same as they would anyone buying a regular drink. I've gotten to know them and they always greet me with a smile and a kiss on the cheek. I told Bob, another security guard, that I get emotional talking about him, and it's true. He makes me feel so safe and is one of the funniest guys I know. He's a newer addition to feathers and he is a no nonsense guy but when you get to know him he is an actual angel. I can't leave out my newfound relationships with the manager and the owner José and Paul. What wonderful people. Mind you, José certainly has a little fire to him but only in the spirit of protecting the establishment. You can tell that the two of them genuinely care about keeping the place safe and operating. Honestly if you get the chance to meet them when they aren't so busy keeping the place together, you'll see how wonderful they are. José is one of the sweetest guys I've met and always makes me feel confident and appreciated when I see him. And listen to Paul talk for a minute and you'll die laughing, he's such a funny guy. Beyond the staff, the parties are a great way to let off steam from work without worrying about creepy straight dudes, ladies. Every now and then there will be a creep who will find his way in but the community is dedicated to keeping each other safe. I will always be dedicated to keeping people safe from uncomfortable situations and I know many other regulars who would do the same. Even though I don't drink, I buy drinks for my friends and they are cheap and from what I've heard, tasty. The bartenders are quick, dedicated and kind. If you haven't tried their food you must! That's the hidden gem of feathers! If you know, you know. I could go on and on about how much I love this place but then no one will read it. You can find me there every Sunday singing karaoke and sprinkled throughout the week whenever my friends and I are feeling spontaneous. As a gay woman with many gay,lesbian, and trans friends, I find this to be my safe place. Of course I go to other gay bars but none of them have that hometown feel that feathers does. It's special to me, to my friends, to the staff and to all the patrons, regulars and newcomers alike. I honestly don't know what my life would be like without it. read more

Its been a while since going to this club but it was always a blast. Everyone is very friendly, its a great blend of gay and lesbians, and the staff is super friendly, even the bouncers which I think is a rare quality in a bar. The music is good and the crowd is not pretentious at all. One thing to notice here is that the bathroom is not divided by gender. Basically men and woman share the same bathrooms. If you are not cool with that then don't drink too much haha. I also love that they have plenty of parking here. read more

It's a very friendly and diverse crowd. I'm only giving them 3 stars because they stopped giving out glasses of water and now make you buy bottled which is actually illegal and irresponsible. Used to go here a lot, but honestly it was always a kind of 'meh' experience. Drinks are overpriced and not that good. Also, I was dragged to the floor by an out-of-control club kid who clutched at my ankle and then lo and behold, I was blamed and cut off from the bar, while he wasn't. At gay clubs, I've learned, cute twinks trump fruit flies every time no matter how unjust the circumstances! Ugh! The impertinence of it all left me with a nasty taste in my mouth about this place and I never went back. Been going to Feathers since I am 21. Great staff, great crowd and always packed. What I enjoy is that there is two levels so you can chill downstairs where there are seats, or you can go up stairs and dance your butt off. Over the years I have noticed a lot of changes and updates to the bar. And the new staff members are just as cool as the ones whom have been there since the start. Paulie and Eddie are my two favorite, the cashier Ray is always smiling and welcoming. And the security / bar-back Mike always stops to greet people as well. My sister spent an hour outside of here getting HARASSED by a bouncer last night. He refused to believe her ID was actually hers even after she showed him a second picture ID, her insurance card and debit card. He accused her of plastic surgery and threatened so confiscate her ID although it was hers!!! He acted like a bully and took advantage of a 21 year old who was doing everything she could to just prove she was herself!!! This bouncer needs to be fired ASAP!!! read more

Security guard attempted to confiscate my sisters legitimate driver's license because he stated she "didn't look like" her picture. Absurd! She is of legal age and has a legal ID and had a school ID to back that up. Security guard said that it "didn't look like" the photos matched. Totally NOT worth a trip to this place if some security guard is attempting a practice like this! Be careful of the angle and lighting in your drivers license everyone! He actually suggested that she may have to pick up her license from the River Edge PD the next day! She has a job and needs to drive there so NO - a trip to Feathers is not worth risking your job for. Would give this place zero stars if possible for heinous customer service bordering on harassment. read more

this place is one of those small city gay bars, and i like that. it has a bit of shabby charecter, lots of regulars, and good memories.
