Went back here having not been in for years. Saw a woman/employee coughing when we went in. This is near the produce. Went shopping. Got near the frozen food aisle and here comes unmasked coughing employee moving around the back of store. Then she's back to stocking shelves. How is she at work? Has anyone heard of COVID that works here? Needless to say, my hubby wanted to get the hell out of there quickly and now doesn't ever want to go back. It isn't the same store as it was many years ago. They need to look at how great coop stores are in Vt. and copy them. Oh and tell your employees to stay home when sick! read more

The Co-Op has wonderful flowers that are beautiful and high quality. The prices are high but that is what you get...great stuff. However, the staff are not helpful, not pleasant and are quite rude. If it were not for the flowers themselves I would go elsewhere like Vermont Cut Flowers. They have wonderful flowers with a great staff but I didn't have time to go over there. After having lived in the Upper Valley for about 20 years the attitude sadly reinforces Hanover's reputation. I have enjoyed their annual Dairy Day where they promote products to encourage you to shop at their store but again the overall attitude continues to discourage me from shopping there. Agree with H. p.'s review above on all counts... The Hannaford in W. Leb is a much better supermarket, on almost all fronts. Same items at Hannaford are close to 45% less off of your bill. I rate this Co-op as a large convenience store, basically. The only positive is anyone can shop here with or without a membership (unlike the infamous Park Slope Food Coop and Communist Style Kibbutz in Brooklyn, NY). Hanover has no competing supermarkets, along with a noticeable lack of any other type of conveniences (no car wash, no laundromat open past 5 PM, no good pizza joints, no chains, etc, etc). Then again, when the price for entry as a homeowner in Hanover is $650K+ for a 3-bedroom home with a rotting roof and leaky foundation, one should expect to be jacked up for food under the guise of "community owned and operated." read more

First the good news, Food quality is usually very good and quite expensive. Good variety of goods there. Here is the bad news. Terrible customer service. AGAIN, their catering division, the ones that never answer their phone, have me scrambling. 5 phone calls not returned until the day before I needed them, only to find I am screwed, they are too busy. Their customer service has taken a real dive over the years and over the last couple, gotten much worse. There is a laid back attitude, if I get to you consider yourself lucky. Kinda like dealing with the Department of Motorvehicles. My annual expenditures have steadily dropped there and after this last episode, it is going to get to be less this year. This store was recently remodeled to be more of a chain-style quickie-mart. It now has more processed and pre-made food, but no longer has a full selection of groceries. It's still a fake coop, and you don't actually own your shares. I can't recommend this place to anyone but the desperate or car-less. Prices are like double what they are at normal stores and coops. Quality and selection is horrible. Veggies/fruits are old and rotten inside for the most part. Meats are gross - the supposed "natural" and "eco" type meats are horrible, worse than midwestern feedlot stuff. Regular grocery stock is old and sometimes well past the sell-by date. Pre-made food is fair-to-bad. They do sketchy things like using rainbow trout ("steelhead") instead of salmon in their sushi. Like other reviews say, If you have a car, it's best to go one town over and stock up at Hannaford, and then stop by the "big Coop" at Centerra on your way back if necessary. . read more

J.S. is absolutely right when he says that the prices are high. On the other hand, so is the quality. The Co-Op blows Whole Foods, Balducci's, and other similar gourmet/organic grocery stores out of the water. Excellent produce, delicious prepared foods (that definitely hit the spot back when DDS got tiresome), a good selection of frozen products, etc. (And I think their knishes are the best I've had outside of NY, although I usually only found them in the Lebanon Co-Op). read more

Horrible meat and produce. A total disgrace to the local market. This place is indeed in no way a coop. What do they give back? Its definitely not giving back good food. I have lived in NYC and across the world. Despite them just getting what other stores get they charge 15% to 25% more. Their 90% ground beef is 50% water. My father bought some ham from there recently that had a giant bloody gash in the middle. What kind of person would cut this and even think about giving it to another human being. I know they have a monopoly but this is no excuse for crap food. I am a chef and food lover. This is a TOTAL disgrace to the word cooperative because it's a corporation that looks at the bottom line. Steve, the Hanover Coop store manager, is worth more than five stars! He listens to his customers, is responsive and takes action. Steve is why I come to this Coop. Matt, in meat and seafood, is my new reason. I wasn't sure what I was looking for and Matt guided me to a great choice. Both Matt and Steve offset the negative experience I had with another Steve, the seafood and meat manager. I will only say he needs to learn customer service. This is the best supermarket I have ever seen. Amazing selection of locally supplied meat, produce, and the best healthy items that you just can't find anywhere else. I could spend hours there, just strolling the aisles for things that are just not found anywhere else. More than a grocery store, it's an experience. read more

The Hanover Co-op is a HUGE disappointment. It does not stock a lot of natural and healthy foods that other co-ops have been stocking for years, like acai juice, and they are pretty unresponsive to suggestions. Employees sometimes don't know what the store has on its shelves. The deli is not vegetarian friendly. It's about 3 times the price of other grocery stores, but you don't get much benefit. Price Chopper has a better organic produce selection. There are no working memberships. It's really stretching the definition of a "co-op". read more

Full Disclosure, I am an member which makes me an owner. I own this store with about 22 thousand other members. It is the oldest Co-op in the United States and the second largest food Co-op in the Country. They are successful because they are committed to the Upper Valley Community. I shop at all three Co-op stores for groceries and Lunch/Dinner dine in . They have a variety of selection for lunches. They have a hot and cold case. I really enjoy their smoked foods. They offer vegan and gluten free alternative in their Prepared food section. As for grocery shopping: I have read that they purchase 18 million dollars a year from Local Producers. I like that they define local as with a 100 mile radius. Al too often grocery stores over use this term. I bought something local once that was from Pennsylvania. What I can tell you is that I shop there because I can trust that I am getting good quality Meats, Seafood, Produce and .prepared foods. I also know that most of the money I spend there remains in the upper valley. read more

I love the co-op for what it offers, but am not a huge fan of how overpriced it is. That being said, it's pretty much the only game in town if you're a carless Dartmouth student, so really, what can you do? This place is a case study in why market competition benefits consumers. read more

No bother to gripe about the prices. That's fairly well-covered. But if you're going to sell overpriced goods, can't you at least do it with a smile? That's the Whole Foods way. The Hanover Coop features some of the most miserable employees I have ever encountered. Walk up to the customer service counter, and you'll be received with a "yeah what" attitude. Many of the cashiers are anti-social. ( Some are wonderful) Note: the other Coop locations don't seem to have this problem, just Hanover. Must be a management issue that makes the employees so bitter. You'll see other reviews about the lack of service here. And management does nothing to fix it. The closest grocery store to campus which has a great mix of organic and big name brands. Whether you need a quick breakfast sandwich or supplies for dinner the Co-Op has plenty to choose from. read more

The Coop is my place to shop. I travel 45 minutes to do so. The customer service is wonderful..especially the meat department. They go out of their way to get me exactly what I want. The produce is fresh and the organic choices are great for in season products. The cheese department is fabulous. They also have a nice selection of unique grocery items. There organic bin products are great. There regulars canned products are a bit over priced..but then I rarely eat processed foods. I do wish they would carry more organic products. But for New Hampshire you can not beat them! Wholefoods has no plans to move into NH in the near future....so Coop is my choice! Incredibly expensive. Everything there is rediculously expensive. Some items are 2-3 times more expensive than other grocery stores for the same item. I have also had bad experience with their costumer service, since there is an older man working there (usually seen stocking items in the frozen food section next to the drinks) who stares me down every time I go to the store. He follows me, staring me down, telling other workers to watch out that I am going to steal something (I have heard the conversation, he was not very desecrate). He makes offensive unnecessary comments about how I'm plotting to steal something and shows hatred towards me. He makes my experience there very unpleasant. Overall, it is a terrible experience for me shopping at the Coop. Prices are much too high, even for the exact same product that other stores sell for much less. Some things there have good quality, but those are even more expensive. A huge disappointment, one very unpleasant staff members, and a sad excuse for a grocery store. read more

A lot of sniping in the comments here, mainly about high prices, lack of vegetarian options, uninformed staff, etc. I have been shopping here while a visitor in Hanover for 10 months and can say, yes, prices are significantly cheaper elsewhere. And yes, the store was undergoing a major renovation during fall/winter 2015-16 so almost every week many shelves and whole aisles were relocated without notice and it was hard to find certain items as things evolved, even if you asked staff. However, I only have a bicycle so cannot drive to West Lebanon to Hannaford's. Yes, i can buy toiletries and a very few grocery items (beer, wine) cheaper at the local CVS. This does not detract from the fact that the food at the coop is of universally high quality. The veggies, meats, and seafood are all very fresh and the 'world foods' section has a lot of hard to find items, like Thai chili basil paste, that I can only dream about finding where I live in Finland. I have tried the shellfish, the fish, the meats, the cheeses, the breads, the frozen foods, the veggie and non-veggie deli items. Today I got the sushi to-go because I did not have time to cook dinner and it was really fresh and good. They also have all four grades of maple syrup for sale and the bulk items section is great. In the city of 60,000 in Finland where I live there is no such thing as a store where you can buy carrots or eggs individually. I live alone here, so that is a big plus since I don't want to waste food I cannot eat before it has gone old. People should stop whining about what is a really a top notch selection of high quality foods for premium prices in a small New England town. If you have a car, drive to West Leb. read more
