There's a large pet section, a clothing area with brands like Carhartt, firewood, a tool section, and tons of local Vermont and Woodstock branded clothing. This general store literally has everything--and I mean EVERYTHING--you would want on a Vermont vacation. They have tactical gear, winter clothing, teas, maple syrup, vitamins, medicine, and even Vegemite and Marmite! This review is based on customer experience. Any business that does not have a customer bathroom is nowhere I wish to spend money. Woodstock is the epicenter of fall foliage visitors. It is the quintessential New England town. Gillingham's makes a fortune from the throngs of different seasonal visitors but is not considerate of their customers. Yes. There is a visitor center nearby but that's not the point. The nice lady explained their bathroom was on the second floor and not terribly accessible. This leads to the question of how the employees are treated. It's not something we will ever need to think about again. I don't mean to sound harsh but it's insane. In fairness, other local businesses may have the same policy but the need has not risen before. We will miss you. read more

This store is shopping heaven. I can easily lose myself in it for quite a long time. When you walk in you can't tell just how big a place this really is. It's only as you work your way toward the back of the store that you realize it winds this way and that and in fact has quite a large footprint. It seems everything and anything can be found under this roof from local Vermont products like maple syrup, to organic beauty supplies such as creams and lotions, household goods, garden supplies, hardware, knick-knacks, chocolate, Vermont cheese, wine and beer. You name it, they probably sell it. There really once was an F.H. Gillingham who was the founder of this general store back in the 1880s. It's been here ever since and with the same guarantee: If you don't like it, return it and you will get your money back or a replacement. During our latest visit a woman had set up a table inside the store where she was selling her locally made caramels and giving out samples. Oh my. We were hooked and bought a few boxes to give as gifts. My favorite were the Salted Caramels. I was good though; I only bought them as presents. The store is incredibly charming with pleasant and helpful staff. The state of Vermont has done a top-notch job of supporting local crafts and small businesses. As a result, when one sees "Made in Vermont" on a product, it is generally thought to be a quality item. I certainly think so. FH Gillingham & Sons fills many of its aisles with such local products and the breadth and variety of things is quite pleasing. While we found a number of things to buy here for Christmas gifts, we didn't find the elusive store cat who was doing a good job of hiding somewhere! :-(( This store is not to be missed when visiting Woodstock. read more

Had heard good things about this place from friends who visited a few years ago. Visited with family this past Fall on a tour and was very disappointed. I had checked their website which clearly has not been updated or maintained in some time, and their social media accounts which had some really great products I was excited to check out. The store hardly had anything that they had been advertising store which so much out of stock. Maybe they are just under new ownership or management since my friends had visited?? Lots of overpriced, low quality stuff. Staff was okay, except when I walked in the cashier was sitting, down hunched over on his phone, and didn't greet me or the other people walking in. Store seemed rundown, and in need of a good cleaning, dusty floors and shelves...I wouldn't recommend this place, Vermont Country store a little drive away is much better. read more

This is a must visit store in Woodstock, VT. I came here after visiting the Sugarbush Farm because I grew up in a small town and love exploring what they have to offer. This particular store takes the cake when it comes to unique small town nature. First off this was the type of store that existed in ye old'n days. I mean when they say a convenience store has everything you need this is the kind of store that comes to mind. Now keep in mind this place is as old as the town so the store hasn't been updated since then so this is real old world look and feel. Upon entering the store you are faced with the standard food section of a grocery store, except that the shelves are wood from a hundred year old trees. The floor is the same and even sags in spots, which to me is where the charm of this old store is found. However, what really makes this place unique is the fact that it carry's everything like an old world Amazon. They even provide free sample food like Costco. We picked up free coffee and cheese that were made by local farms. The further back you go the more unique and wide ranging the items become. There is a hunting section that sells gun's, bows and arrows and fishing materials including hand made fly catching. Right next to it is home goods such as tools and other items to help fix up the home. There is even a section for clothing as well as a gaming zone. I sat down with my fiancee and had a wonderful game of checkers on a large cloth game board. Overall this is a must stop location, a part of history and how the world used to be before the modernization of the cities, our lives and our way of living that we see now. read more

I used to live within walking distance from this quaint but very useful country store. Smack-dab in the middle of the World's Quaintest Village and fun for tourists, it is also where a lot of locals go to grab a few potatoes, a jar of pasta sauce, or some crackers and artisanal Vermont cheese. They have an impressive wine collection, and sometimes the well-informed sommelier is there. I don't drink wine, but I do appreciate their equally excellent beer selection, which includes bottles of beer that you can usually only find at really good restaurants, pubs, and breweries (beers like my favorites, Ommegang and Stone). They also have snack-sized portions of in-season fruits. The best cherries I've ever had I got here in a bag that fit neatly in the palm of my hand. Other healthy snacks for the day-visitor include nuts and gourmet crackers...and some Vermont cheese. Conveniently, you can also buy a little cheese board and cheese cutter here, too. You can also buy hunting gear, mosquito repellent, or laundry detergent (keeping moving to the back and to the right) or maybe a deck of cards, classic children's books and games, books of regional interest, or a croquet set. That's right: not a croquette (though they may have some of those, too), but croquet. You know, the lawn game involving brightly colored balls, mallets, and wire hoops you stick in the ground. We bought a quality, reasonably priced set last Christmas for my sister and her husband -- the people who are hardest to shop for. Actually, I think I did 50% of my Christmas shopping here one year. In fact, I would sometimes go there for a bag of Effie's Oatcakes (which I highly recommend, but only to people who are able to control, afford, or otherwise gracefully handle their addictions), and would land up staying for bizarrely long amounts of time just browsing. More often than not, I'd walk away with some new, locally made product (chocolate sauce or Vermont cheese!) that they allowed me to sample. Or a cool book on how to make your own environmentally safe cleaning products, or a nifty little cooking or baking tool that I had not even been aware existed. So if you are leaf-peeping (this is one of the best leaf-peeping towns in America, they say) or skiing nearby or just driving through, take a moment to stop by and pick up some true, non-kitschy Vermont memorabilia for the folks back home. Like, I don't know, some real, small-batch Vermont cheese. Bring your Christmas list with you, and then buy a few bottles of brew to savor at home while everyone is stuck in mall traffic come December. (For local folks, this is also a good place to get empty boxes for moving and whatnot -- they are in the bin at the front of the store. At first glance, one would think this is just another touristy, genuine, olde, general store. In some respects you would be correct. It does have some shelf space dedicated to all sorts of maple products and a e few trinket type things. For the most part, the store is a general store in the true sense of the word. If you need some regular provisions - they have it. You need a blade for bow saw - they have it. You want some extra sharp Cabot Hunters cheese - they have 2 types... That type of thing. What I think is remarkable about the store is there pretty huge wine sections (comparatively speaking - this isn't Kappys) But they also have a great selection of micro brewed beers... they have a good selection of organic beers too. All in all a great place that allows me to submit to my tourists indulgences of buying maples candy, but also a place to buy a saw blade, beer, and good dog treats. read more

This truly is one of the most amazing stores I've been to and it really does have everything (including tiny, personal Butter Bells). Jim spent a great deal of time in the section with the pub-puzzles made from cast iron; it was here that I was also able to show him the "Pass the Pigs" game which I remembered from the 70's but which I couldn't find an example of until yesterday. I was stuck in kitchenwares for awhile, but did manage to find bottles of one of my favourite beers--Skullsplitter from Scotland. Toys, shavers, toiletries, beers, cheese, canned goods, stollen, organic & locally produced products, flannel and fleece, wellies with neoprene tops--everything really. For Woodstock (and Vermont), the prices were reasonable. We lost everyone a few times, and if it weren't dinnertime, we each could have spent hours perusing the wares. The staff is incredibly friendly & helpful, and they also have maple products and cheddar cheese. It's similar to the Vermont Country Store, but not as much of a touristy zoo; Jim would gladly return here, but will spend no more than 10 minutes at the other place. read more

They have a great line for people interested in homeopathic remedies and with food allergies. I have an allergy to wheat and gluten and they have a great section for people like me (which is hard to come by). They have a room filled with wine and beer from all over the world...a special place to stop and find a special bottle for family and friends. Everything that Nick B. said! Not being from New England makes it easy for me to indulge in every touristy bit, especially the maple products--I put it on everything I can. Walking into Gillingham's is just like walking into a small piece of Vermont history. Creaky wood floors follow your every move and you can almost picture the old horse and carriage pulling up to the place in the early 1900's. My boyfriend's dad lives just up the road from Gillingham's and surprises us with care packages full of: maple syrup, pancake mix, hot chocolate, bacon and other treats from within it's doors. It's always a great treat for a couple from San Francisco. There has not been one visit to Woodstock where I have not gone inside Gillingham's, it is the perfect place for me to get some treats for my family back home and grab a nice bottle of wine to enjoy by the wood burning stove with my boyfriend and his family in Woodstock.
