My 4 year old does piano lessons here and the experience has been great with Lindsay. After 4 30-minute lessons, he could read music rhythms (eight, quarter, half, whole note and rest), knew all the notes on the piano, learned about finger numbering/placement and was beginning to play short strings of notes. Pretty impressive for 30-minute lessons a week apart in a 4 year old who can barely concentrate on any task for more than a few minutes. The set up seems cool here. Music rooms with more of a rock music instruction focus. Some individual lessons and some whole bands of kids playing. Loungey area to hang out with snacks and air hockey. My 8 year old daughter went to camp at Coast Music this summer and loved it! She wasn't very familiar with most instruments but the classes taught her and her band 3 of their favorite songs and they performed so beautifully! My daughters have been taking piano and drums and I have been learning guitar at Coast Music for the last couple of years. We moved here from the Bay Area and I have to say, we are SO lucky to have a place like this serving our community. The owner, Beth, works seven days a week it seems. She is always looking for opportunities for the kids to perform--concerts at Coast, local community events like Hermosa Fest, sporting events, etc. I feel like our kids aren't just learning an instrument, they are learning to be confident when in front of a crowd. And she is super responsive and communicative when there is something that we need to adjust. The teachers are all very nice and positive. For beginners you can go with anyone, but obviously styles tend to get more specific once the kids advance so do your homework. I've been a pro guitarist and musician in general for over 10 years and I had an unusual area of professional music I wanted to study. Thankfully, Coast Music Conservatory had an uncommon solution in expert guitar teacher Dave Stark. There were serious gaps in my knowledge related to guitar technology: pedals, tones, amps and even instruments and pickups. This is not a normal subject for a guitar teacher. Thankfully, Coast had just the right person. I've been studying with Dave for a little over a month now and my knowledge on this topic has exploded thanks to his expert tutelage. We started from the very beginning, as I believe all lessons should: a conversation about my goals, both long- and short-term, and agreeing on a plan of action that would help me bridge this gap in my education as completely and efficiently as possible. Dave is caring, patient, passionate and really knows his stuff. He's always punctual and consummately professional. And he's extremely generous with his time, knowledge and attention to detail. I can see that Dave not only cares about me as his student but even devotes thought and energy outside the "classroom" to helping accelerate my progress with new insights and suggestions. It's like I showed up looking for a teacher but got a mentor instead. When this school was on Hermosa Avenue it had soul. It was all about learning how to improve one's musical skills in a fun atmosphere. Once they moved to their current location things changed rapidly. There is constant pressure to sign up for additional classes/recitals. The soul is gone.
