About a year ago, I noticed an odd sore on my face. I thought it might heal on its own, but it didn't. I made an appointment at Coastal Dermatology and was seen by Dr. Ross Kaplan. A few days later, I received a phone call with cancer results. I decided to have Mohs Microscopic Surgery performed right at the office. I will never regret making that decision. The staff was supportive, and the procedure went smoothly. Before I knew it, I drove myself home. It's been a year or so, and I am cancer-free. I'm happy to have a barely noticeable scar, and it serves as a reminder of what might have happened had I not made the appointment with Dr. Kaplan. If you live near Camarillo, make an appointment with Coastal Dermatology and see Dr. Kaplan. I think you'll be glad that you did. read more

Three times isn't a charm. I had two bad experiences at Coastal Dermotology, but figured I just caught the office on a bad day and gave the practice one last try. If I wasn't sure how bad the office was, it was confirmed on my third and last visit. I never actually got to see the doctor. I was told the procedure I was scheduled for, which they confirmed several times, and I confirmed 2x by phone was not available. I was told this in the treatment room, not by the doctor but by the receptionist. I asked to speak to the doctor for clarity and was told she was not available unless I paid for the appointment. It was really strange - and basically, that is how previous appointments felt. Unprofessional, even a bit sketchy. read more

Waited almost naked for 40 minutes in the patient room for Dr Nguyen. She never showed up and I left. I went to the front desk and two employees were talking away. I told them about the situation and they quickly said sorry and went back to their pleasant conversation. No one really cared and no effort was made to explain. I was there for a body scan not for cosmetic consultation or buy product. This is what is wrong with the medical system today. We may all die early but our lips will be nice and plump. read more

I had been dealing with a pretty bad rash on my face for four weeks before I went to see Dr. Nguyen. A practitioner friend of mine prescribed me a topical steroid that wasn't working. So it was time for me to see a dermatologist. From the very beginning of the appointment, I feel that the doctor did not listen to my needs, and was not compassionate to what I was going through. I'd given my version of the story on what happened to an assistant before seeing the doctor. When Dr. Nguyen came in, she never asked me what happened, she looked at my face for 30 seconds and diagnosed me with contact dermatitis and wanted to prescribe me the same topical steroid I already been using. I explained to her that I was already using that and it wasn't working. I showed her pictures of my rash getting worse, which she disregarded. I asked her if she could prescribe me a antibiotic because I felt I had a lot of infection in my face. She told me no. I asked her if we could do scraping of the skin to see if it was something else going on, She told me she could do a biopsy, and that I would leave with a stitch in my face. I thought that was a little extreme for a rash. So I was left with two options to leave using the same steroid that wasn't working or to get a biopsy. I told her I was going to go ahead and get a second opinion somewhere else. I did, in fact get in with another dermatologist a week later, who told me, I in fact was misdiagnosed and did not have contact dermatitis. I had perioral dermatitis and that I had a lot of infection in my face and was prescribed a antibiotic immediately, and given a topical cream to help with the inflammation and rash. Within two weeks the infection was gone and I am now on the road to recovery. I'm very upset that because she chose not to listen to me. I was left to be in pain for another week if not longer if I was not able to get another appointment somewhere else. Her lack of knowledge could've done significant damage to my skin barrier because the more research I did I realize that having a topical steroid on your face for more than two weeks is not good and she should've had me stop putting that steroid on my face immediately instead of sending me away, telling me to continue to use it. I would not recommend Dr. Nguyen if your looking for someone who is knowledgeable, compassionate, and have the skills to listen to their patient instead of brushing them off. She's only been doing dermatology for four years and it shows. I have been to other doctors in the past for skin checks BUT this clinic failed to impress me at all. Their pricing is ridiculous and they call a 360 exam of skin extensive and charged me $35 more than quoted over the phone. they make a big deal of going over pricing while you are in exam room which is really weird. Not my cut of tea. I would not recommend. read more

I had an annual skin exam and purchased a $90 sunscreen they recommended. Dr. Rebecca Nguyen didn't exam a spot that I was concerned about. II made another appointment immediately- came back and had another exam that I waited 38 minutes for her to enter the room. I asked the medical assistant to ask Dr. Nguyen of this would be a post op from my first exam a few weeks back. Considering this spot should have been checked at the previous exam. No response from Dr. Nguyen. She literally took 30 seconds to look at it ( no exaggeration) and charged me another $90 co pay for something she should have examined on the first visit. I asked to speak with someone in the business office. They took a message and never called me back. I called again, and spoke to someone in detail about my experience and was promised a call back- no return call. This place is very unprofessional. They didn't give me a reason or even call back after multiple messages. I will never recommend this place to anyone. I will take my business somewhere else - where they actually treat you fairly and frankly do a more thorough exam. read more

I was excited to visit this office so I drove an hour total and took a work call in my car- it ended up I did all of that for under 10 minutes of consultation. They were recommended by my plastic surgeon in ventura AND wow, I was disappointed. I thought my appointment was at the bottom of the hour but it was 10 minutes earlier. The front office staff was so annoyed with me and told me the clinician that was supposed to see me was scheduled for lunch...I apologized. I had set aside a LOT of money to really take care of my skin and treat myself for my birthday. The intake appointment lasted, maybe 6 minutes and the end result offered zero in-depth consultation or recommendations. I would have loved to hear options to invest in myself over the next year. All I got was a suggestion to use a ret/ bleaching cream for 3 months and come back?? The appointment was rushed without any real deep discussion upon on how I could improve the areas I shared with them: 1. Crows feet 2. Pigmentation 3. Sun spots 4. Redness 5. Slight loss of collagen 6. Aging skin It's safe to say the consultation is an interview and sadly I don't feel they invested in earning my business. I will vote with my cash and go somewhere else. I've been meaning to leave this review for sometime now. I visited this dermatologist office back in 2019 right before the pandemic. I had a growth at the tip of my lip which turned out to be a wart that had to be removed from a plastic surgeon. I was prescribed medication by the nurse practitioner at the time before either her or the doctor knew what it was. I'm not sure if she is still at this location since it has been a while but the medication she prescribed actually caused the growth/wart to grow even more which then in turn required me to visit a plastic surgeon for formal surgical removal. Their suggestion for the plastic surgeon was incredible, but the nurse should have done her due diligence as to what medication she prescribed that caused the wart to grow. This nurse also cut off the wart without testing to see what it was before I was then referred to a plastic surgeon in the area to have it formally removed. All this to say the nurse had been more thorough because my lips no longer look the same and surgical removal could've been avoided had I not been prescribed the medication by said nurse. I recently got a call from this office to come back in for an annual check and needless to say it won't be going back in. read more

During the 1st exam which occurred right after my honeymoon, that was on a boat for 10 days, Dr Kaplan was condescending and gave me the Snow White story, basically that tan didn't equate to beautiful, he did not try to get to know me or ask me the circumstances that lead to my tanned skin. No one spends 10 days in a boat and avoids sun exposure wth. I have since found a Dermatologist that isn't arrogant and has time to understand her patients without the demeaning tirade. That's right, a woman, who provides comprehensive care and a more professional and emotionally intelligence approach to interaction with her patients. read more

I've been going to dermatologist for years for my psoriasis, and wish he was the first one I ever want to. I am a 59 year old male and just now found out I have psoriatic arthritis because of my first visit to Ross S. Kaplan, M.D. he didn't just see the psoriasis. Though I no longer have it on my face in my ears, still a little bit on my elbows but I feel so much better with a clear face and ears that aren't peeling skin. I don't usually comment on my Doctors but I must share my latest experience with Dr Ross Kaplan of Coastal Dermatology, and his associate Julie, I love going to see them both once every six months. I entered a drawing at their office and was notified I won. I didn't feel safe claiming it because of Covid. So I Didn't go for over a year, yet when I went they still honored my prize of a cosmetic procedure. I was so thrilled with the results I will definitely go back each year to keep it up. Also, Dr Kaplan is always diligent looking for any sun damage and found a possible cancer from sun damage on my back and took a biopsy. He even had me take my shoes off and checked between my toes and every accessible place on my body. The office staff were great and helpful. If you're looking for a great dermatologist, look no further. read more

Same place as the office of dr. Kaplan Ross S, MD. I called to schedule a consultation which was only $135.00, so I thought not bad. I wanted to pay CASH! However when they asked if I had insurance, I said yes but I do not wish to go through them. Then they asked me if I had HMO insurance I said yes, but we will be paying cash. So the receptionist put me on a long hold and came back to tell me that they could not take me. We were going to pay CASH, but they said that they don't take "HMO types". VERY JUDGEMENTAL! Now I can read between the lines. I questioned her to make sure it was what I heard. I must say that I'm pretty dismayed to say the least. This is the most ridiculous thing I ever heard of. So either they are ignorant or that my money isn't "rich" enough for them. Moving on! read more

My advice - find somewhere else and stay far away from this place if you care at all about how medical staff treat its patients. My family has seen Dr. Kaplan a couple of times. His bedside manner is a bit odd and rushed, and he seemed quick to upsell products and services. But what was the final straw was my experience with Julie McCardell. I purchased several thousand dollars worth of cosmetic skin care services during a special the office was running. (The fact that they had services "on sale" should have been the first red flag.) Our initial consultation was less than 5 minutes. I scheduled the appointment for the first treatment, but Julie refused to treat me. Despite being fully vaccinated against COVID and explaining I had a mild runny nose due to spring allergies, Julie pulled me outside and told me she was not going to treat me due to "her gut" and her "medical judgment." When I calmly asked for more clarification, she told me the "conversation is over." I said I understood, but I said in an even tone that it was disappointing that she was so abrupt and unwilling to have a discussion. Before I could finish, she shut the door in my face. I have never been treated so disrespectfully by a medical professional. Luckily, I was able to get my money refunded, and I am looking forward to going to an office that takes the time to talk with patients like human beings, with kindness and respect. read more

While I was treated very well by the staff, I found out after my appointment that they do not bill for preventive care services, such as an annual skin check. They said that because they're a specialist, they don't have preventive care billing codes. My old dermatologist, who is also a specialist, was always able to bill my annual skin check as preventive. Usually when you go to see a doctor you feel uncomfortable and feel like they are judging you, but not with doctor Kaplan. Extremely informative and wants to educate you on how to take care of your skin. My husband and I went in together. It was very educational and comfortable. The front staff is nice and accommodating. I wish I could say the same about Dr. Kaplan. During my last visit there he said, "You used to be so thin" and told me I should lose weight. I only weighed 180 pounds at 5'9", and most of the added weight was from weight training. He said that "as we age" we should try not to carry so much weight. I was only 46 and was in fine health. He's a dermatologist and had no business commenting on my weight, especially while I was standing there undressed for a skin exam with him and his female assistant examining my nearly naked body. went for my first ever visit to see a dermatologist and was pleasently surprised how great and relaxed dr kaplan was. the women at the front desk were very nice and helpful. i had a full check up and he removed a few moles for me i just didnt like. i thought i was going to have to make a follow up for mole removal but he took care of it right then and there. i sent my husband back a few days later for his first ever dermo visit and he also really liked the staff and dr kaplan. im so glad we found a good dermatologist. read more

Because I am not a doctor, I cannot rate Dr. Ross Kaplan's expertise as a dermatologist. But he outright lied to me and was very condescending. I feel that other people should know and that, if he reads this and becomes aware, he may improve for the better. Yesterday I called his office and asked if I could get my full-body exam with him only in the room. In other words, without a nurse or a nurses aid or whatever. Just him. I was told OK. Then I came in today and I repeated my request to the woman who brought me back there (possibly a nurse, I don't know). She said she would check with the doctor. She came back in and told me that, yes, the doctor agreed that only he will enter the room. She instructed me to disrobe. I did. But then the doctor AND SHE came in the room. I told the doctor that is not what we agreed. In a nutshell, I kept saying things like, "But that is not the issue, you told her to tell me that you agreed to give me the exam alone." He would always pivot to: "That is not how I've done this in years." I asked him a series of questions that led to him admitting that he told the woman that he agreed to see me alone. I told him something like, "Can you see how I would feel betrayed? Can you see how I feel like my privacy and sense of dignity has been betrayed?" He said, "I am sorry that there was a misunderstanding." I told him, "There was no 'misunderstanding', you just lied to me." So if you like people to tell you the truth and to respect your dignity, I suggest you go elsewhere. read more

...so having been in many times through the years, I thought was time for an update following a new procedure. While fully supportive of any persons choice, am not into fillers, etc. and prefer noninvasive. Thought long and hard about Ultherapy on my lower face and, of course, sought Julie McCardle's advice. I have been fortunate to have seen Julie my very first visit years ago - always warm, plenty of time, answers my questions with care, candidness and warmth. I may have a thought and she makes a different suggestion. That is exactly what I desire - frank and forward thinking. No two people are the same. We discussed upper face and lower face/neck and decided on lower face/neck. I watched several YouTube videos on what to expect - while noninvasive, there is no topical used. Frankly, felt like a light snap of a rubberband against your skin. Julie thoroughly covers the procedure before hand...deeper layer first and then the upper layer second. Great conversation throughout the entire procedure. Was absolutely tolerable - no redness, maybe a touch of swelling and a bit of bruising in the coming days. Areas are the very slightest bit tender and only noticed as I used my face lotion. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend and have the procedure again if needed. Barely 24 hours and am very happy. This office, top to bottom, is just the best - every staff member is superb. Every single person I have dealt with is of the same base...candor, humor, helpfulness, knowledge and interest in me, their patient. I have tried multiple dermatology offices in Ventura County over the years for many different services; however, Coastal Dermatology is by far the best. The front desk staff always greets me with a smile and they are very understanding. Each time I have gone in, the nurse practitioner (Julie McCardell) has been very sweet and helpful. She always answers my questions patiently and will explain everything thoroughly. The information she gives me has always been correct, as evidenced by the results I have seen. I also have very minimal scaring from all the procedures and services she has done so it is obvious Julie is very skilled in what she does. One thing I also find to be a very valuable part of my experience is that Julie takes the time to get to know her patients as more than just a diagnosis or a check-up. I have been going to Coastal Dermatology since 2007. After spending hundreds of dollars even with insurance I saw zero results. First they had me doing microderms every 2 weeks and spending $100 every month on medications. Every time I would have an appointment with Julie she would prescribe me a new cream or pill, however, when I went to my pharmacy they would always be discontinued. This just didn't happen once but numerous times. I would then call the office and let them know that once again the medication had been discontinued and I would never receive a phone call back. Also, the front desk is so unbelievably rude. Even after going there for so many years, the older white lady at the front would give me the rudest attitude. At first I thought it was only me but then when i asked the lady doing my microderm she said the same thing. This woman was horrible! I dreaded going to the dermatologist because I didn't want to see her. Finally, I was referred to Affiliated Dermatology and I couldn't be happier. Great place! As soon as you walk in to Dr. Kaplan's office you feel invited into a warm, clean office, which has a gorgeous saltwater aquarium as a focal point to the waiting room. Julie prescribed me a medication and I had been experiencing abdominal pains from it but she insisted it was just a side effect. I went to see a few other dermatologist for a second opinion and they all were SHOCKED that I had been on this medication for OVER TWO YEARS. This medication caused damage to my liver and stomach. I was referred to Dr. Kaplan' office @ Coastal Dermatology by my regular dermatologist, Dr. Searle, after a biopsy revealed the need for outpatient MOH's skin cancer surgery. The initial appointment booking took less a week and the surgery was scheduled the following week. Every aspect of the surgery was thoroughly explained by Dr. Kaplan during both the initial exam and as the actual procedure took place. Preemptive medicines were also prescribed should they be required. In addition, Dr. Kaplan called later in the evening the day the surgery was performed to insure I wasn't experiencing any complications. I find this level of patient care truly exceptional. Worst Dr visit of my life. I was there last week and I had a terrible experience. I was scheduled to see the Dr., but instead got the smirking NP there (I think her name was Julie). Totally rude, unprofessional and condescending. Dr. Kaplan didn't even bother to step in. Rushed and a waste of time. Looks like they only treat old people with suspicious moles. No clue how they're "Best in the county". Shady office, next to a Dominoes Pizza and a Mexican eatery. Hope they go out of business. Absolutely shameful. *Update: Went to Pierre Skin Care Institute in T.O. instead. HUGE difference. Can't recommend enough Pierre over these guys. I recently visited Coastal Dermatology (Dr. Ross S Kaplan) to address a chronic skin issue that I have had off/on for many years. It flared up again after a long period of time; 6 years. The skin problem had been treated by another Dermatologist through the years who was retiring. I had brought some old medication that helped me control the problem that had expired. Dr. Kaplan entered the treatment room in a rush and in a somewhat harsh manner asked 'what the problem was'. I told him, and he said 'let me see'. I showed him, and also showed him the medication that I had used in the past. He said 'what are you a dog? They give this medication to dogs!' I was shocked!! He embarrassed me in front of his assistant. He quickly told me to do some different 'things' and rushed out. He was arrogant, rude and unprofessional! My wife and I will never return to his office. She is wonderful. She answers all my questions without rushing me out like a lot of medical offices do. She is very sweet, very gentle and very patient. i agree with the review below. the staff at this office is very friendly. they are all very welcoming and greet each patient with a smile. the office is very state of the art and has a spa like quality about it. i went in to get my acne treated but never once did i meet the actual doctor. they always set me up with the nurse practitioner. i didnt have a problem with that, she was very nice and always answered my questions. but the treatments she put me on never worked. each time i went in for a follow up, she would change the cream i was on, or put me on an antibiotic. once i came in for a really bad break out and one of the techs brought me into the room and asked what i had been on. when i gave her the list she replied, "wow! we've got you on the big guns!!" well apparently whatever big guns the NP put me on wasnt big enough. nothing helped. i also would go in for microderm abrasisons. the first time i had it done, they took me into a dim room with a table and soft relaxing music. i thought "oh, how nice! this is gonna be like at the spas." boy was i wrong! after the esthetician got me set up, she turned on a machine that sounded like an air compressor and went to work on my face! so much for the quiet spa atmosphere. ha. it's a great office and the staff is wonderful, but after a year+ of treatments that didn't work, i figured it was time to find another doctor who might be able to help. read more
