I have a very specific and difficult eye condition which requires me to seek expertise in certain surgical procedures. Dr Ouano is one of those specialist and came highly recommended by his peers in other parts of the country . I drive 5 hours to and from my appointments because he's that good, I trust him with my sight because my sight is everything to me. Intelligent, classy and very technically capable. Id you are looking for eye care beyond getting a prescription and may need specialized care, avoid this practice. Theiir management offfice is more concerned about liability than patient care. I have a genetic condition that limits eye dialation and a high eye pressuer that could lead to glocoma. Therefore, when I needed cataract surgery and my doctor at Coastal Eye Clinic (CEC) referred me to a Doctor at the Duke University Eye Center (which was terrific) and said he would be glad to set up a cooperative management agreement with Duke for some post op exams to avoid my having to drive 3 hours each way to Durham. Duke filled out the cooperative mgt. paper work, sent it to CEC, and told me to call CEC for a 1-Day Post op. check. When I called to make the appointment, they said they would not see, so I had to stay in Durham overnight. My Duke surgeon said they do cooperative agreements regularly and assumed CEC must have thought I should see the surgeon for an exam so close to the operation. I then tried to make a appointment at CEC 6 days after the cataract surgery simply to check my eyt pressure to be sure it was dropping as expected. When I tried to make the appointment, they reagain refused. to see me. I said this did not seem right sinced CEC's own doctor had referred me to Duke and said he would do a cooperative agreement. I was then transfered to the CEC management offce who said they no longer do any cooperative agreements despite what their doctor might have promised because "if they touched by eyes they were liable for malpractice claims." A few days later, I received a letter from CEC saying they would no longer see me at all and to find another practice. While other practices routinely do cooperative agreements, the bottom line is that this company will drop you like a hot potato if you have any needs requiring a specialist. read more

Today I called this office at 12:25pm and the voice states the office was closed and their voice mail and website and this site states they close at 1pm on Fridays. Please correct your information or your schedule... The reason of my call was to schedule an appointment for my mother who does not speak English well. My relative went in person and one Lady who works there interrupted the receptionist who was willing to schedule the appointment with my cousin and said that due to the HIPAA privacy law they couldnt sched the appointment. Someone needs to alert the entire state of NC because every medical office allows you to schedule appointments over the phone or any other available means and according to this Lady thats a violation of that law. Unfortunately this puts the clinic in bad representation because instead of just handling the HIPAA sheet to patients she should taka a moment and read it and familiarize herself with it. We are not requesting patients personal information we were trying to schedule an appointment. read more

Upon my two visits as a new patient, I was extremely impressed with the thoughtful covid safety measures in placed upon entering the facility and throughout. Dr. Ridgeway was amazing regarding his impeccable patience, experience, and knowledge. While under Dr. Ridgeway's care, I felt so confident, comfortable, and informed of his diagnosis. Not only Dr. Ridgeway but his staff that accompanied him during further testing expressed those same values. In addition, I experienced those same kind of attributes during my visit in the optical department as well. I have been to other optical clinics over the years, and I must say, this clinic I rated it 5 stars because the whole staff, from the front entrance/front desk to the examining rooms, exhibited and administered total TLC professionally. In a profession such as this, coupled today with the high pressure demands of covid, I felt this clinic's presence was a rarity and so I had to express my appreciation. I have been a patient at Coastal Eye Clinic for about 20 years. During that time I have received excellent eye care. I have had 3 different ophthalmologists who have all provided accurate diagnoses from retinal tear to cataract surgery. When I started there I was being treated for glaucoma. An ophthalmologist there determined I did not have glaucoma. That was wonderful, no drops or fear that I might lose my sight. Now my care has become more routine. My eyes are healthy. My current doctor, Dr. Scott is specializing in glaucoma and cataract surgery. I saw her recently and she never mentioned that she was transferring my care to an optometrist . I prefer seeing an ophthalmologist and called the office to make my request, and after a week of waiting for a call back I went to the office. This morning I was told that I could not see an ophthalmologist and that they would be sending me my medical records. My eye appointments usually take about 7 minutes. I don't understand. To say I am disappointed is to say the least. I will be looking for a new Ophthalmologist but I feel this is so difficult after 20 years. This facility came recommended by someone that I know. We have relocated from another state and my husband is looking for an ophthalmologist because he has diabetes and some other issues. I called twice and had to leave a message for a callback. After two weeks no one called me back. I called again and someone did answer the phone. She was the rudest person I've ever spoken to in a doctors office. I explained that we needed an ophthalmologist and she argued that we could see an optometrist who knew what to look for in diabetic patients. I again explained that he needs and has always seen an ophthalmologist because of his diabetic issues. She said " our ophthalmologists are very busy and they don't see anyone without notes from a previous doctor." I said that was fine - that he had been seen at a very well known eye and an ear facility in Boston and that they could electronically request the records. She informed me that they do not request records, that's the patient's job. So I confirmed that I would have to contact the facility and have them mail me the records rather than have their doctor's office request them electronically. She told me in your rude voice that was correct. I told her we would find someone else and we did!! read more

I will never go back to this place!! I made an appointment to be screened for Glaucoma. They schedule me with an optometrist, Dr Ridgeway, who checked my vision for glasses, never compared the current results with my current glasses (never even looked at my glasses ) and gave me a perscription for new glasses. Upon check out I was advised that $50.00 was due for something not covered by insurance. No explanation at all! Never checked for Glaucoma. He said oh you've had cataract surgery. I have never had cataract surgery!! read more

If I was rating this on my doctor, I'd give this place 5 stars!! But...on the clinic as a whole....4. They did get in new tile, so the place has an updated look, but the time factor is still a problem. Your apts. for 9:45 your not even called back till 10:35! Then theres more waiting back there. But once he walks in, he is tunnel vision, and its "all about you" He is so great (Dr. Cameron) hes 65 and smart as a whip and even funnier. Patient and never rushing . Makes all that time stuff just dissapear.... or maybe it was because he dialated my eyes and I couldnt see a thing! read more

I've been seen in this office twice, once by Dr. Scott and once by Dr. Hamm. Neither seemed to listen to what I was saying or understand my problem. This latest visit was for a serious diabetes-related eye issue (sudden appearance of blind spots) and she was unable to find a cause. She decided to refer me to a retina specialist, but after a week of waiting for the referral I called and the office staff had simply FORGOTTEN to do it. They said they'd take care of it right away, but when I called back a week later, they had FORGOTTEN AGAIN. There was no apology. In fact, the person I spoke with was rude, surly, and dismissive. I sent two postal letters to the registered owner of the practice, a Dr. Chance, as well as Dr. Hamm, expressing my concerns. Two weeks later there was no sign of a reply from anyone. As others have noted, wait times are also extremely long. I won't be seeing a doctor at this practice again. read more

I got there on time. There are lots of providers who can give good care and take good care of their patients. I see Dr Hamm on a regular basis. She is intelligent and knowledgeable. She also has a nice personality. I don't usually have to wait but when I do it's usually only 15 minutes. Also saw Dr Oano about my cataracts. Very professional. read more

This office is more concerned with protocol than a patients eye health. They REFUSE to see an eye injury/infection because they are not the Dr. on call. The Dr. on call called the New Bern office and requested they see my husband and they are still refusing- per protocol. Skip this office and find a Dr. who CARES about patient health. read more

After two visits where I waited an hour and a half to be called in, I've given up on this ophthalmology practice. Receptionist did not make any effort to find out how much longer I would have to wait or how many people were ahead of me. Unless you're reading a 3,000 page novel and don't care if you have to wait long periods of time I would recommend going somewhere else! read more

I have been seen by Dr. Hamm and was very pleased by her attention to detail and extra care she took in my examination. I have a family history of glaucoma and she took the time to address all of my concerns and run all of the tests needed to put my mind at ease. Yes, the waits are a bit long but I know when I am seen by her I am getting all of my concerns addressed. Another time I saw Dr. Hamm was for a very severe allergic reaction I was having in my eyes. After trying all of the medications the drug store had to offer for my eyes I saw Dr. Hamm who quickly diagnosed me with a contact lens allergy. We switched contact lenses and my cleaning supplies and Ive never had a problem since. read more

I am not usually one to take time to write reviews. However, this experience deserves a few moments of my time...After suffering a severe injury to my cornea, Dr. Hamm skillfully found quick remedy to the situation. The pain was unbearable and nearly incapacitating. Dr. Hamm was able to correct the tear and placed a bandage lens on my eye. In a few days the tear had healed and the pain was gone. For a medical professional to so promptly respond to my immediate need and find remedy was a welcome experience compared to other experiences I have had elsewhere in the medical community. I will continue to see Dr. Hamm for my vision health needs and would highly recommend others to do the same. read more

I have been going to Coastal Eye Clinic for over 10 years. Dr. Cameron first treated me for Glaucoma and graciously helped with setting up a surgery with Duke Medical Center. His patience is unsurpassed, he has a great sense of humor and is just a superb human being and wonderful Doctor. However, Dr. Cameron has passed on many of his patients to a new Glaucoma Doctor. When I decided to get a second opinion on a surgery I had just gone through 8 months earlier, and now needed to have it done again..I was treated very differently! This time I decided to go back to Duke to have it done correctly. The doctor abruptly left the room. I never received a call to see how I was doing after my surgery. There was absolutely no concern about my condition. I have spent so many hours sitting in those waiting rooms..my husband would go grocery shopping, pickup our kids at school, and finally came in to the office to see if there was a problem. Ridiculous..over scheduling of appointments. I could live with the extremely long waiting time, and I did! However, I will not go to a doctor who does not show true care and compassion for her patients..beyond just seeing me in the office! read more
