Clean on the right, dirty on the left

There's a reason this painter has so many 5-star reviews! The HOA let us know we needed to freshen up our 5-year-old house. It looked fine to me--maybe just a little scuffing on the white trim--but we hated the sludgy brownish color of the siding, so we started collecting bids for repainting. John was too busy to add us to his schedule, but he was nice enough to text back several times about the job, and I asked him for advice about the other bids. As we talked, John was surprised that the house needed repainting so soon and asked for photos of the damaged paint. He said he could clean it with a chemical wash--more time-consuming than a pressure-wash, but loads cheaper than repainting. And if we didn't mind waiting, he could fit it into his schedule when it was too rainy to do his other painting jobs. I was just expecting a clean house. I wasn't expecting a completely different colored house! But that's John gave us. It turns out that the house wasn't sludgy mud brown, it's a light avocado green. You can see this best on the photo that shows the green (cleaned) area on the right and the brown (dirty) area on the left. John scrubbed and took hours getting our house clean, and his attention to detail shows everywhere. There was an area on the porch by the flower bed that had gotten splashed with red clay. John had warned me that he wouldn't be able to clean that. But he worked like a dog, and now it's beautiful! And he even touched up the white trim for us. Because John was coming back the next day to finish up, I asked him to tackle a couple of interior paint problems too. My husband had patched two drywall holes but had had to leave to take care of his mother out of state (COVID) before he could finish. John finished up the patching work with a real artist's eye for making those problems disappear and then did a meticulous paint job over them. I walk by them dozens of times a day, and it's like they were never damaged. But the most wonderful thing about that interior work is that JOHN KNOWS HOW TO DO DRYWALL WITHOUT SANDING! Those of you who've ever had drywall compound dust in every little corner of your home know why I put that in all caps. There was no dust this time because John uses a damp sponge and magic (at least, as far as I could tell). In fact, all of John's work at our house seemed a little magical, but that's what happens when a highly skilled professional works very hard to make a job turn out right. In every way, John was a delight to work with. He's an all-around great guy and an interesting person too. He communicated clearly and regularly, arrived when he said he would, accomplished what he said he would and more, and left behind a neat and orderly workspace. I didn't realize until after he left, but he even took the time to fix my screen porch door! And his prices were so reasonable that I felt a little guilty when I saw how hard he worked to earn that money.

John did a wonderful job. See the full review I posted in the photos...I wrote a review back when he completed the job but needed to update the pictures and couldn't copy and paste my original review.

    Looking up to catwalk

Could not be more pleased. Coat O Color accommodated my very tight schedule. Job was done in 2 days and is spectacular. Husband and I are both very pleased with John's crew work and attention to detail. I usually get three or four quotes for work. With John I felt comfortable and definitely chose right ! Would highly recommend and will use John again!

When I initially put my Painting Project out on Yelp, Mathew was 1 of the 1st to respond and though I originally had another company in mind, through continued diligent communication by Mathew, AFM ultimately earned my business. Mathew was SUPER communicative up until my job was confirmed and booked and then he kinda' disappeared on me a bit until the morning of my appointment, which though it had me slightly nervous along the way and pushed me to have a Plan B ready just in case, it ultimately just let me know that he is a man of his word, but not going to keep beating you over the head with communications in between time. As my pictures show, 1 part of my project was a mosaic-type piece in my Entryway Hallway and though Mat told me that he'd never done this type of design, he also said that he was confident that his team could get it done and do it well! I have to say that Francisco and his cohort who actually did the work did an OUTSTANDING job...I was and am quite pleased!! The small bedroom that I had done in addition was a layup from a 7-Footer in comparison and they did an outstanding job on that as well! =) After the crew left that night, I noticed a faint orange dusting on my carpet, which obviously wasn't there before, because my original walls weren't orange prior to the project. I reached out to let Mat know and he explained what he thought the issue might be and said that he'd come out by the following Wednesday (In 5 days) to take care of it, via a carpet shampooing or alternate method. Mat actually called the next day and said that he would be able to come and rectify the problem in an hour, if I was home and available (Which I was). He arrived in a timely manner and rubbed what appeared to be some kind of paint-thinning lacquer in the problem areas of the carpet and said that letting it sit about 2 hours and then vacuuming the treated areas should take care of the problem and it did to eyes less discerning than mine - SUCCESS!! Mathews original quote was the 2nd highest of the 5 quotes that I received, but when it was all said and done, it was well worth it. I never signed/accepted my original quote however and in gaining my business, Mathew told me that he'd probably be able to come down on the price a bit, but that was NOT the case in the end. No harm, no foul, as I have some culpability in that hiccup as well, for not confirming the final price before work started. With that being said; Though I absolutely recommend this company, I'd implore you to be clear on a price upfront!!

Unfortunately, the quality of the completed work and the attention to detail have not met our expectations, and numerous workmanship issues remain despite giving the company two opportunities to correct them. Upon inspecting the completed work, we found numerous problems, including uneven and crooked paint lines, visible paint drips, problems with caulking, and other areas that did not reflect the level of workmanship we expected from a professional painting contractor. Appropriate protection also was not used in various areas where it could have helped prevent paint drips and overspray. One of our primary concerns involves the caulking. In multiple areas, old and deteriorated caulking was not removed before new caulk was applied. Instead, new caulk was applied over the existing worn caulking. When I questioned this, Jose told me that none of his competitors remove old caulking. This was particularly surprising because our neighbors are currently having their home professionally painted by another contractor, and we personally observed their painters removing deteriorated old caulking before applying new caulk. Gonzalez Painting has already returned to our home twice in an effort to correct problems with the original work. Despite these two corrective attempts, numerous workmanship issues remain unresolved. Francisco, the supervisor, came to our home to inspect the work. During that visit, he stated, "It doesn't look bad from the street!" We found that response concerning. We contracted and paid for professional exterior painting and expected professional workmanship upon reasonable inspection, not simply work that appears acceptable when viewed from the street. Following the unsuccessful attempts to correct the work, my husband and I spoke with Jose at the main office about our concerns. My husband specifically mentioned the lack of attention to detail. Jose became very defensive and told us that if they took the time to concentrate on every detail, it would take them months to finish each house. That response significantly increased our concern about allowing the same crew to return. Attention to detail is a reasonable expectation when hiring a professional painting contractor, particularly when the problems involve visible paint lines, drips, caulking, and other aspects of the finished work. We also believe the unresolved condition of the work is inconsistent with the "Satisfaction Guaranteed" representation contained in the company's written quote. We relied upon the company's representations when choosing Gonzalez Painting, and after the original work and two subsequent corrective attempts, we are still left with significant workmanship concerns. We have extensive photographs documenting these conditions, including photographs of problems that remained after Gonzalez Painting was given opportunities to correct the work. Gonzalez Painting has now had two opportunities to correct the deficiencies, and significant problems remain. At this point, we have lost confidence in the workmanship of this crew and will not authorize the same crew to return to our property for a third attempt.

UPDATE: Originally,…read moreI was very unhappy with the job that Fillo did on our basement bathroom remodel and my initial review expressed my frustration about them hiring subpar workers who did subpar work in kind. After I posted my review, a manager reached out to see if they could send a different crew to assess the situation and come up with a solution for our concerns. My husband was reluctant to allow them because they had done such a poor job in the first place and he worried they would only make things worse. My in-laws were the only ones using that shower and after just a few months, the situation had become untenable for them because of water pooling problems and then the grout started washing away. This was on a new shower build that was not even 5 months old. My mother-in-law was struggling and it was really frustrating to see that after we had spent so much to give them a great new shower for their space, so I decided to reach out to Fillo to see if their offer to address our concerns still stood. Diana called me back right away and we coordinated a day and time for a new project manager and tile worker to come out. The new project manager, Marcello, was a massive improvement from Joe, our previous project manager in that he wasn't trying to gloss over the glaring problems with the shower build. He acknowledged that the work had not been done correctly and that the only way to properly fix it was to remove the shower floor completely and start it from scratch to ensure proper drainage. He would also re-grout the tiles. The new tile worker started and completed the fix in just two days and did a much better job than the original guy. It was obvious that this one takes pride in his work and wants to make sure that things are done well. My in-laws now have a properly functioning new shower and are relieved that their bathroom can once again be a place of tranquility rather than stress. I have to commend Fillo for excellent customer service because I don't think many companies would be willing to go the extra mile to make things right for an unhappy customer after they had already been paid. In my experience, the only way to get a contractor to fix a wrong after payment is to sue them, but Fillo did not allow things to escalate like that. They went out of their way and incurred additional expenses to address and resolve our concerns with their work, which my family and I certainly appreciate. I had originally decided that Fillo would not be getting any more of my business but after the way they handled themselves with the shower fiasco, I have renewed faith that they are a reputable company that is worth doing business with. When I am ready to paint my house or do additional work that requires a conractor, they will be at the top of my go-to list because I am confident that they will stand by their work and make sure their customers are happy with the result. That is a rare find with contractors these days and so for that reason, I highly recommend Fillo Painting & Exteriors for any of your home renovation needs.
