Very poor communication, not a personal relationship. Recently I was prescribed a medication for cholesterol even tho not a nurse or the Dr nor the PA even told me o had high cholesterol. When I called to ask why I was prescribed this, the nurse on the line gave me an attitude and told me that they sent me a message on my patient portal. I didn't even know I had a patient portal. I would have appreciated a call, fe my doctors office explaining the lap results, discussed options, but instead I go to the pharmacy and find out from the pharmacist that I now have a prescription for some sort of cholesterol medicine. Very impersonal, super unprofessional, and I feel like nobody could be bothered to pick up a phone and talk to me voice to voice about a health issue. Won't be going back here ever, and I would not recommend anybody who is looking for a Dr to start going here. I'm not sure why Dr. Coates' office allows a rude receptionist to answer the phone and make appointments. When I asked her why she was being rude she proceeded to say she wasn't and hung up, then no longer answered any of my phone calls. If you aren't happy with your job then leave, some people avoid going to the doctor because of people like this woman. Great Dr, long-tenured staff, capable front office. Most labwork is completed on-site, so there's a fast turn-around. He's a DO and seems to look more for the cause rather than band-aiding the syptoms. No, he's not going to sit down and chat with you for twenty minutes; this isn't 1960. I have been going to this doctor for a couple of years. The staff gets you in on time and then you sit for a very long time waiting for the doctor to come in the door. Last time it was freezing in the little wait room. One gal told me that he does take the time to listen to concerns. But in my case I was there for a blood test and prescription refill only. When he walked in the door he went straight to the computer screen, there is no conversation, no normal doctor/patient chat. The waiting room moves customers swiftly through and the lab is top notch! I have no problem with the NPs nor the front office. But I think he should not overbook his days, maybe we wouldn't have to wait so long for him to address individuals and let us get out in record time. Worst experience at a doctors office. I received absolutely zero information regarding my visit. The doctor did not seem interested in me at all, and provided no information regarding the tests that were run. I left not knowing anything about my physical or my physical health. Only one person, the person running tests on me, seemed interested in me at all. However, he did not bother to explain what tests he was running or their importance. I felt like just another number. I will not be returning, and will seek care elsewhere. Oh, by the way, you should find a more sterile looking room to take blood from patients, I felt like I might get an infection. If you are looking for a healthcare professional that actually cares about your health and issues you may have, do not go to Dr. Coates' office. read more

My husband tested positive for Covid, so him being a previous patient, I gave the office a call because he was too sick. Beforehand, I went to the drcoates.net website and made sure I had uploaded any form they could have needed, because I knew the office would be super busy and I didn't want to delay anyone with information they might need. Before I could finish any of my sentences, the SUPER RUDE woman who answered the appointments line, started barking things I needed to furnish. If she would have let me finish talking she would have heard that I had uploaded her needs on the patient portal previously to calling. Furthermore, she told me I needed to email items to her to which I told her I did, but apparently to the wrong email. Note I got the email off the drcoates.net website and when I was trying to tell her that, so that they could update their site with the correct one, she abruptly told me "I am not dealing with you today!!!" and hung up on me. I understand frustrations can be high at an office who is receiving so many calls, but to have a medical professional hang up on you is 100% wrong. This woman needs to find a different job -- one that does not deal with the sick public. I, nor my husband, will NEVER step foot in that office again and maybe that's ok. Maybe they have plenty of other patients who will put up with this type of treatment, but we won't be one of them. Worse ever! read more

I should have listened and paid attention to the reviews here but my insurance recommended them as one of the closest to my house so I went thinking it couldn't be that bad. Like most of the healthcare in this country, it is ridiculously expensive. Even with insurance, my bill was $125. Eager to get out of the room. I have been going for roughly 2 years and every time I have had him his bedside manner is awful. He will write prescriptions, but won't discuss much about them. I had a problem with one that he prescribed to me for anxiety and he said it was all in my head and I was making the negative side effects all happen to myself. I had vomiting, nausea, enlarged pupils, tremors, and numbness. I was told by a pharmacist that he over dosed me with conflicting medications. I had to miss work because I was too disoriented. My fiance had to miss work to take me to the dr. He came in saying how it was my fault, he didn't even care enough to let me voice my concerns. My sister had a similar situation with another doctor and got serotonin syndrome and had to go to the ER. I hope if you have an experience that was like this or similar that you report it. My wife and I have been seeing Dr. Coates for years, He really cares about his patients and has taken care of our entire family. I have read some of these reviews and I can tell you for a fact that they must be confused with another doctor. I wouldn't change my doctor for anyone else. My wife would not be alive today without having Dr. Coates. I can attest he really knows you. I rarely write reviews, but this Dr Coates and his office staff deserve one. I am going to bypass his rude office staff and his phone that a human being never seems to answers despite's the 20 dozens people who are walking around his bloody office looking busy. First visit, I was seen by his PA, she barely listened to me and dismissed my test results from a previous ER visit that prompted me to come to them in the first place. Since they are so close to my house, I scheduled a follow up visit and requested this time to be seen by the all mighty doctor., hoping he might be better than his PA. At my second visit, I I was astonished to realize that he was actually worst than his PA, ( at least she stayed in the room with me a good 15 minutes). Dr Coates has the bedside manner of an elephant in a porcelain shop,, looking annoyed like he had better things to do with his time than being in this room with me. He spent less than 5 minutes in the room ( I am not exaggerating, I timed him). Walked out, not answering any of my questions or addressing any of the concerns that brought me to him, prescribed me some nonsense expensive medication with the main side effect listed as kidney failure ( the bloody cure is worst than the disease) and he walked out, I sat there for a minute after he rushed out of the room, whipped-lashed, wondering what exactly just happened, Was I having a nightmare or was that a doctor's visit? Ok doc, let me enlighten you for a bit, these annoying people ( like me) with their petty grievances keep your staff employed and pay your ridiculous doctor salary, so don't act like you are condescending to doing me a favor by seeing me. Me and my insurance pay you for those useless encounters you call a doctor's visit. I go to see Dr. Coates for my migraines. They were already diagnosed and I had been given a prescription by a neurologist that he simply continued. When my husband suffered an injury, I suggested we start there (healthcare can be confusing and expensive w/ referrals and specialists, etc.). He walked in, past us, didn't address us and went straight to his computer. He throws around medical terms and becomes visibly upset when you appear to have any intelligence or question his conclusions AT ALL. He laughed at me (when I asked, "well is this also true if it hurts when he does this?") and looked at my husband like, 'can't you shut her up?' My husband uses his hands for his career; yes, I was concerned about a life-changing injury. When my husband just said, "she's right. It hurts then, too", Dr. Coates jammed his thumb in my husband's wrist and said, "does it hurt now?" I rarely see my husband wince. He woke up w/ even more pain than before the visit. He already had steroids from the ER. We left with a bill and increased pain: not a diagnosis, referral, MRI referral for a soft tissue injury (but he did charge us for a needless x-ray), nor a prescription for more steroids. I wish I could put zero stars. Worst doctors visit ever. I came in for a physical and general wellness check. I gave the MA a list of my concerns none of which were addressed by Dr. Coates. I waited for over a hour to see the doctors and he spent 9 minutes with me. I was rushed out with no answers to any of my questions. I felt more unsure of what is going on with me after leaving. I'm very disappointment I drove all that way to see him and wasted a big chunk of my day. Will not be returning. I was referred to him by a doctor I work with and I made sure to let him know the poor quality service I received. Also I called the next day to speak with the office manager about my concern with the visit and make sure they weren't going to bill my insurance company for a 30 minute + consultation. I was told the office manager wasn't in and no one knew if she would be in at all this week and that I couldn't leave a message because she did not have a voicemail. I find this very hard to believe. I've worked in the medical field for years now and never have I worked in an office that the manager didn't have a direct line and voicemail. Please do not waste your time or money seeing Dr. Coates. He has a horrible bedside manner and I wouldn't recommend him to my worst enemy! read more

Dr Coates has been our family doctor for approximately 15 years now. We have no complaints. He has new, top of the line, on-site medical equipment (which is a huge health benefit), is very thorough on his yearly physicals, and allows us to take an active part in our care, rather than being the type doctor that doesn't think patients have any sense. His SAME nurses have been there many, many years. That alone says something.... He is always very friendly with our family, and is very dedicated to the job. read more

I saw Dr. Coates for my annual wellness physical. He did the most thorough physical that i have ever had. blood was drawn, a cup was peed in, they did an EKG, Chest xray, and various other tests. All of it was in house. I was very impressed. The staff were super friendly and attentive. The rooms were well decorated with custom murals on the walls. The facility was clean, a little too cold for my liking, but not uncomfortable cold. My only complaint was that I wish Dr. Coates spent more time with me, but with all the tests he ran- he could see all the information he needed. I have a follow up appointment scheduled with him for three months, so I'm thinking he will spend more time since all the tests have been already run. I'm very impressed though. read more

I have several serious chronic (pain) health issues, am disabled and see several specialists. Dr. Coates was to be my new PCP. First meeting with a specific pain that I had never experienced before. I spent several minutes talking about my issue with the assistant. She was very nice, personable. He walked in, went to computer, I move over and sat on the table, he tested the area of my body, said it was Not what I thought it might be, handed me the receipt and the appointment was over. There was No discussion about what the problem Might be. I was so disappointed. I need a PCP interested in my well being, not some disinterested person. I won't be going back. Dr. Pat Coates is the best physician I have ever had the privilege of going to. I have since moved away from the area and I am disappointed that I've never found another doctor here even remotely close to him. I may just be spoiled now but it is hard to find someone with his great bedside manner, knowledge and experience. Anyone in that area is lucky to have him nearby! On site capabilities for labs and x-ray and he really embraces modern technologies for better care and faster service. If he ever somehow embraces some sort of tele-medicine, I may have to stop trying to hunt all around Arizona to find someone worthwhile. :-) read more

I've been coming here for years. Can't say enough good things about Dr. Coates and his staff. They're always friendly, they always have same day sick appointments- even on Saturday mornings. He is thorough, listens to all of my concerns, and never rushes me. We never have billing issues either which can be easily be an issue these days with insurance companies. They fax your prescriptions directly to the pharmacy which also very helpful. There is always a nurse that will speak with you over the phone by the end of the day if you call with questions or concerns. read more

I would look elsewhere unless you really have no other choice. Dr. Coates is what I would call a "country" physician - not up to date on the latest protocols or procedures. His bedside manner is lacking at best. Fortunately, I got a second opinion which corrected the problem I was having after months trying Dr. Coates "home" remedies. Normally my experience at this clinic is pleasant. 9/10 times I have a great experience with the doctor, his PA, and the staff. I'm not going to state my name, but the clinic can figure out who I am by my diagnosis and the medical treatment given to me. I want them to know it was me because I believe they can do better, and I know this because they HAVE done better. I injured my knee several days ago and I was given an x-ray and a prescription for a VERY weak pain medicine. I also take a prescription that is slightly stronger for my lower back only twice a day, but I do not take it that often and compared to other pain meds, this medication is not that strong. The doctor had me come back a few days later if my knee didn't get any better. The WEAK pain medication did nothing to alleviate my pain. In fact, my pain got worse and I got very little sleep and had to walk with a cane. The severe pain in my knee caused pain to radiate throughout my entire leg, hip, back, and it triggered my fibromyalgia to flare up. I went back in today hoping to be taken more seriously and be treated more humanely. I was given an injection of a steroid in my knee, which could take time to take effect in reducing inflammation. I asked the PA for some pain medication to help get me through the next few days to give the steroid time to work. This would also give it time to let me know if it's working, and if it's not, I could make another appointment and review my options at that time. She looked at me like I was some lab rat she was experimenting on- observing me with a cold and clinical gaze, void of any empathy. This SHOCKED me because she has treated me twice before and was warm, kind, and quite empathetic. I just feel I could have been treated better and shown a great deal more courtesy and empathy. As I write this review, my knee is killing me and all I can think of is going to the E.R. in the hopes I will be treated better. Other than this one experience, I have nothing but rave reviews for this clinic, they physician & PA, and the staff. I truly hope this is is a one time mistake on their part and my future experiences will be much more pleasant. Normally I would give this 5 stars, but based on this one experience alone, it deserves nothing more than 2 stars. read more

Dr. Coates has helped our family in all of our heath concerns. We started seeing Dr. Coates in 2002 for general allergies and stomach bugs. He was able to help me back in 2004 when I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. He also was there for us when my daughter was born blind in one eye and we had no idea what to do. When my in-laws moved here to help us with our kids, he became their main doctor. He has a great staff and I highly recommend him to anyone that is sick. read more
