In-laws took the family here for dinner recently in Cedar Rapids. It's in the downtown area so parking can be a bit tricky. The ambience is very stylish and upbeat. We were lucky enough to sit at the front since the level of noise toward the back looked and sounded fun, like everyone was having a great time - but it wouldn't have been conducive to conversation with anyone wearing hearing aides (which some of us were). Service was friendly and efficient. Never had a dry water glass (and the place was jammed busy, staff was hustling, but in an "I've got this way") The seasonal gazpacho appetizer was insanely perfectly delicious; the acid/freshness/flavor was impeccable. Two diners ordered a halibut entree that was clearly cooked to perfection, and both those diners said: OMG good! I had a duck farro that was very rich, in the right way, delicious but filling. The farro was cooked to a perfect al dente. Ordered gelato, sorbet, and macarons as shared portions, everything looked beautiful and tasted wonderful. We finished off with house limoncello that was fresh rather than creamy - great way to end. Definitely need reservations for this popular spot. We were greeted at the door immediately and received a warm welcome while being escorted to our table. Two servers were by soon to acquaint us with the menu and take our drink orders. The extra dry Plymouth martinis were spot on. We started with the Parisian Gnocchi and were stunned with the rich and complex flavors. These are chefs who really know how to create something special. We complimented the dish to our server and noted that the dish and the ambiance reminded us a lot of dining in New Orleans. That started an interesting conversation since he had spent two years in New Orleans and thought Cobble Hill was the closest thing to the fine dining there. Our entrees were both the halibut and it was amazing. The fish was fresh and the accompanying sauce and greens were incredibly bright and complex. Dessert was the chocolate soufflé, quite nice. We went to Cobble Hill Restaurant to celebrate eleven years of marriage. Cobble Hill would have gotten five stars if my other half was not freezing during dinner. At a place like this the atmosphere has to be perfect to go along with the food. She did bring a long sleeve pullover. That she used but was still cold. The woman next to our table was in a dress and kept her arms wrapped around herself so we were not the only ones to notice the temperature. The appetizers were good. The main entree was something new and different for each of us and left us wanting more. My wife and I booked a reservation here for our 20th anniversary. We had never been here before and had our expectations stoked. We were not disappointed. This is a lovely spot in a narrow but deep location with high ceilings and the history of the building being exposed in just the right ways to make for a wonderful mix of old and new decor on warm and rich side over the new and shiny side of things. They had a hand written card on our table when we arrived wishing us a happy anniversary which was a nice touch. We immediately felt welcome. We found interesting options to explore on the menu and our culinary expectations were exceeded with every dish. We each picked by our personal preferences but also shared each other dishes so as to gain as much experience with their menu as possible in a single visit. This will definitely be on the top of our list for special occasions and perhaps on some less-special occasions as well. ;-) read more

The most amazing hidden gem found in Iowa! I had the pleasure of dining here while traveling through Iowa on my move to actual Cobble Hill Brooklyn Ny! If I were in Chicago or Minneapolis then maybe, but just can't justify it for Cedar Rapids. My husband and I have loved Cobble Hill for a long, long time. We reached out to Andy and Carrie to see if we could have our wedding reception there and were humbled and so excited when they agreed! Oh. My. Gosh. It was better, more beautiful, magical, delicious, amazing (and so much more) than we could have ever imagined. Carrie, Claire, Andy, and Jordy were very thorough and intentional when it came to every detail of the evening. The food, ambiance, hospitality, attention to details and guests... it was all just incredible. We had several dietary restrictions, and they were incredibly accommodating and couple of young picky eaters that they whipped something up for in a flash ;) - above and beyond. The craft cocktails we had, a gimlet and an old fashioned were uniquely flavored but true to tradition. I don't think I can say enough about this place. I love the vintage furniture, the vintage Mitch matched dinnerware, and the ambient vibe. Very classy feel to the atmosphere. The hostess was kind and prompt. The waitress and the gentleman helping her knew everything about the menu including their drinks list down to the very tiniest details. The customer service was above and beyond exceptional. The dishes we ate were very well thought out and I'm pretty sure they didn't skip a beat upon the quality of the food they chose to use. Local and fresh produce within a thirty mile radius. Fresh meats extend a bit further due to making sure that there are no hormones, humanely put down as possible, living situations are acceptable, etc. they cut, cute, process, age, and smoke the meats there. Cobble baby, Cobble baby, Cobble baby, Cobble, yeah. This one of the fancier restaurants in Cedar Rapids, looks like something out of the big city put in Iowa's second biggest city. For starters I had the pomegranate lemonade that was so good and had a metal straw, if you haven't had one it makes the drink that much colder. I then had the split pea soup, very good soup that has a rich flavor. For my entree I had the short ribs that comes with parsnip puree, port braised red cabbage, crispy shallots, apple-parsley horseradish salad. All of it was delicious but the portions are very small for $26, the quality is there but they could give a little more. For desert I tried the apple brioche donuts accompanied with chai ice cream, milk caramel jam, compressed sliced apples. This dish was amazing, but for $8 only 4 small donut holes come with it. This is a great restaurant overall, worth a try if your in town and want a nice dinner. read more

A truly extraordinary dining experience. The wait staff was highly professional, offering excellent service with timely returns to check in progress (without being intrusive). They explained the entrees and specials well, and were prompt with clearing table and beverage refills. Top drawer. The meal entrees were simply excellent. My wagyu beef rib was succulent and tender, perfectly cooked, and well complemented. My dining partners' mains (wagyu sirloin and pork belly) were similarly delicious, and both gave their meals 5 stars. We shared an appetizer of Curried Gnocchi that was a remarkable fusion of Italian and Indian...whoever made the dish has an excellent pasta hand and an understanding of flavors and textures. We came here on a whim. A bunch of us were here for a wedding and don't know much about the area. This place is a gem. A true gem. The food is clearly made with care and the flavors are meticulously chosen. You can taste the heart that goes into the dishes. Not actual heart but the love. I've heard great things about this restaurant, so I was anxious to give it a try, and then one day the stars aligned and some friends took us here for dinner. The ambience was cool and quirky (think mismatched plates, chalkboard wall pig drawing) while still feeling upscale. Our waiter was attentive even as we were the indecisive table that required three check ins before we were ready to order drinks. When he was gone for awhile, a woman from the bar stepped in, checked on us, and handled our drinks. So in other words, the service was top-notch. Point for them. We started with the fried cauliflower, and omg. I will never NOT order that dish at this restaurant. I wanted to lick the plate clean. Definitely heavy breading (my fave) with a light sauce underneath. Amazing. The charcuterie board was also delish, with a wide variety of cheeses and meats, and even with homemade pickle slices. I'm not the best person for that dish since I don't eat meat, but everyone seemed to enjoy it. Next up were the entrées. I've gotta admit that I was surprised by the small portions for the price point ($30 for three hefty scallops and a few greens is a little underwhelming) but everything was cooked to perfection. The meat dishes looked more generous so maybe that's the secret? In fact, there weren't any vegetarian entrées on the menu, even though they'd probably accommodate them. Either way, when I return, I'll probably just order three hefty meat-free appetizers for the price of one entrée and call it a day. They have everything from salad to gnocchi to delicious soups for apps, so I think I'd be more than happy to go that route. Desserts were creative and fun, but the simple and refreshing Thai basil gelato was definitely the standout. Honestly that's all I need after such a big meal. But they ended things with little complimentary pieces of pineapple meringue, which was a nice touch, too. Finally, the drinks. Tree house stories was light and refreshing. Totally would drink it 10 times over. Some of the other drinks were a little ehh for me but the list was varied and creative, so I'm confident people would find what they want on it. They also do happy hour in the afternoon and again late at night, so you could definitely stretch it into a full evening. For the most enjoyable version of an outing here, make a reservation, and plan to fight for street parking (free after 6pm). Expect menu changes -- they rely on seasonal and regional items. It's expensive enough that I would only see myself returning for special occasions (and/or when my rents are in town, no shame) but it's definitely one of the most impressive places I've visited since moving to Iowa. read more

My husband and I had a reservation at 8pm on Saturday to celebrate Valentine's Day. The staff was amazing and attentive to our needs, and our waitress was stellar. My husband was able to sample some scotch, and was given a free beer that another patron had ordered but left before receiving while waiting for me to find a parking space. He said the Old Fashions were so good as well. The dinner was delicious and you can absolutely see the care they put into their food. Having moved from the Bay Area of CA, I can tell you the food is on par with the taste, presentation, and quality as any of the high end places I have been in the 20 years I lived in CA. If I lived closer, this would probably be a regular restaurant I would go to. But I will definitely be coming back to Cobble Hill. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting. Its tucked away in the downtown area. Very dimly lit yet cozy. Service was great and food was excellent as well. We were traveling on business and searched Yelp for a nice restaurant for dinner. We did not have a reservation and was seated immediately. The server was able to describe everything in each dish and make recommendation. I settled on a duck breast which was prepared very well and was very tasty. My coworker had the pork belly which was also delicious. We shared mussels as an appetizer which could easily feed 4 people. The wine sauce with it was wonderful. I am visiting the area for a short term gig and happened upon this gem. Eating alone, I was a little apprehensive about how I wold be received in a busy restaurant, but I was instantly reassured by a wonderful greeting from a very charming hostess. She immediately gave me what I considered the best seat in the house. I can honestly say this will be the only place I am eating dinner this weekend. The French Oak Old Fashioned cocktail was sublime. Something that good is too dangerous and I had to temper my impulse to drink it quickly. Beautiful presentation, smooth flavor. One of the best drinks I have had in a long time. I began with a white tuna crudo which was beautifully plated and delivered on flavor. A recent visit to the area had us at Cobble Hill for dinner with my father-in-law for his birthday, we had been reading Yelp reviews the previous weeks before our trip looking for a place that would be above the norm for him and a treat. After reading that the chef was a James beard award winner - it sounded like just the place. First impressions upon entering, tall dark brick walls with subdued lighting, heavy wooden tables, well spaced between them, a small but ample bar area with a great cocktail program. A farm to table chalk board as you enter, lists all the local ingredients on the menu for the evening. The hostess greeted us and seated us immediately, and our server showed up shortly after (she never introduced herself to my knowledge - even asked my wife afterwards and she could not recall either) asked us about our drinks and suggested we order everything at the same time (a convenience for her perhaps?) Starting with the east/west oysters on the half shell - the east coast N*38 were large succulent and a bit on the salty side and quite tasty, the west coast Compass Points were small, compact and loaded with flavor, served with sweet pickled onions and the house made hot sauce (presented in amber dropper bottles) was a great combination (fiery hot full flavored but not over the top hot). Perhaps the best part of my meal. I ordered the local brewery; a Chocolate Stout from Lions Bridge Brewing - it was a great stout, full bodied, rich and thick with a nice head and deep chocolate undertones. My wife decided on a house special cocktail "Apples on the Bow?" a combination of apple reduction and dark rum topped with a sweet gingered apple cube - she said it was very tasty and had well balanced flavor profiles. My appetizer I went for the Chinese Five Spice Pork belly (a skewer of three small pieces pork belly over a medley consisting of shaved daikon, ginger pickled mushrooms, and charred scallions) it was very flavorful and could have been amazing but, the pork belly was way over cooked, dry and hard to cut through. A good dish but nowhere 5 star great. The father-in-law chose the Sautéed Calamari with green papaya salad, crispy shallots, nuoc Cham and cilantro, he said it was very good and quite tasty and the best part of his meal. My wife decided to try the fried Arancini (a combination of fresh mozzarella puff, pickled red onion, baby spinach and house cured salami) for an appetizer - it was a nice crisp, fried puff ball exterior with a creamy cheese center mixture, the onions, spinach and salami served on the side. She said it was very good and my sample tasting agreed. My wife and father-in-law both decided on the roasted Lamb loin with herb spätzle, Chinese broccoli, black garlic purée, laughing bird shrimp and orange, the presentation was very nice, but both said that the protein was overcooked and hard to cut. Not what you expect from a loin cut. I went for the Berkshire Pork loin with a medley of sea island peas, sugar snap peas, candied rhubarb, and fresh watercress garnish. Berkshire pork is known for its great marbling and similarity to fine marbled beef. Unfortunately this was not the case, the flavors were sort of there and it looked like a regular cut of pork loin, and sadly again very tough to cut, not what I was expecting or hoping for. It was a let down. After the disappointing entrees we did not order dessert. Again, with all the high reviews we were expecting a great memorable meal and got just okay, not bad by any means but @ 200$ for dinner for three - we expected better entrees at the 25-29$ price point they were asking.
