This is the second time i've bee. here in a week. I'm on a business trip and we were too late the first time for the happy hour price on the seafood towers. The "seafood tower" is 1/2 off before 6:00. The larger one is $50 off before 6:00. We each got the seafood tower and that more the. enough for a meal for one. It has six oysters, which are delicious. Also six pickled sardines, which are wonderful on the provided crackers. There's also a crab claw that is lovely. The tuna poke thing is very good. There a lump crab dish in a creamy sauce I don't think it needs. The crab is good. I could lose the sauce. The only bad part was the six shrimp. They're cooked in a way that they have a flavor I didn't love. That part I did not finish. But the server was wonderful. She could not have been nicer and more professional. She made our experience great. The server on the first night we came here was also great. They have great servers. The place has a high end bar and grill atmosphere. Went here for a brunch after an Iowa women's basketball game, was quite busy but great food. Great service, amazing and super friendly staff. I want to come back and try the brioche french toast sticks as well as the belgian waffle with espresso whipped cream, they sound delicious and I was super impressed with the avocado toast! My college daughter said this is the upscale place for special occasions. The 3 of us went for dinner the Friday night before a Saturday football game. Looks quiet on the outside. Oh boy, it's an energetic place on the inside. Yet, it's rather dark. I think they know how to cater to both college kids and their parents. The inside exudes upscale. Feels turn of the century (as in 1900) . We had a semi-circle table on the main floor. I heard downstairs is a different world. We ordered drinks first. One drink took a long time and so they comped us. That was nice. One daughter ordered a steak. It was a good size. I ordered fish. Really good. The atmosphere just put all 3 of us in a great mood. Was recommended this place by the beautiful bartender at mill house brewing and said they had great seafood. Was excited to see how easy it was to find and just off the U of Iowa campus, a short walk down the street. We were greeted right away and preferred to sit on the patio, which we did. Great menu, lots of really great options from a variety but definitely some seafood takes. Was tough to pick between this creamy seafood pasta and the sandwich but opted for the sandwich, which was delicious. Came with chips but I chose a salad and I picked the one with cranberries and blue cheese and my my my was ir tasty. Such a light dressing with seeds and it was just perfect with my crab, lobster, shrimp sandwich. My partner ordered the pork chop and cheesy palento and it was marvelous. Not only was it visually delicious but the flavor was spectacular. That pork chop was cooked to perfection left moist and soft but cooked all the way through. So so good. Stopped here as we were passing through town. Great outdoor and indoor areas. Food was delicious, and the portion was perfect. Only thing we didn't like was that we wanted to pay cash and they don't print the receipt so the server and her trainee held the terminal and watched me count through the money in purse, which was uncomfortable. read more

I've been here a handful of times and the food is always stellar justifying the New York City prices. I've never sat outside, but there is outside patio dining, which looks lovely. The best deal are the 3-6pm $1 oysters daily (m-f- not sure on weekends) They also have drink specials during that time. I've also come here for Mother's Day and Easter specials, which have always been again delicious yet overpriced. It's a treat type of place. I'll never be a regular aside from the oysters . After a long flight arriving to Iowa City, I wasn't in the mood for a big meal but wanted to go somewhere to get a small bite and relax. My daughter took me to the St. Burch and we headed downstairs into the Den. What a cool vibe and loved the dark interior. We had a great time and the food was spectacular. The sauce on the shrimp creole dish was amazing. Scooped up every last bit of the sauce with bread, because it was that good! I've been here just once for lunch. I sat outside, which was pleasant. I had the fish and chips, which was just OK. The fries were decent, but the fish was about half batter and not particularly tasty. It was expensive for what it was. (I often get fried fish at a place in Alameda, CA which has much better fish for a much lower price. SERVICE: Given that downtown Iowa City has a strictly enforced 1-hour parking limit, I've found that the restaurants are great at giving efficient service. Our waitress was no exception. My party of 2 pondered the menu for 10 minutes and our food still came out before we'd even hit the 30 minute mark in our parking. FOOD: We both did the "The Pick Two" option for $15.50. It's a sizeable amount of food for the price. I ordered the Chicken Bacon and Swiss melt with the classic Caesar salad. The other person ordered the Atlas Mac N Cheese with the cup of salmon chowder. The plating and taste of the food was good. The portions are reasonable and you can finish your food during your visit. The lettuce for the Caesar salad is very fresh and crunchy (a personal fave). I love the shrimp voodoo and mac and cheese options at this spot , truly, the shrimp voodoo is a MUST. It's packed with flavor, cooked perfectly, and has that addicting little kick that keeps you coming back for more. And the mac and cheese? Creamy, rich, and the kind of comfort food you dream about. Both dishes are consistently excellent, seriously, they never miss. That said, the service can be hit or miss. I've been here multiple times, and it really depends on the day. Sometimes I'm greeted by warm, helpful staff who are attentive without being overbearing. Other times, the energy feels... off. One visit in particular stood out, I ordered to-go at the bar, and the staff member helping us looked visibly irritated, despite the restaurant not being busy. When my friend asked a simple question, the response came with a look that screamed, "Really?" It was uncomfortable and dismissive. Also, something that lingers in the back of my mind: the restaurant advertises its seafood as "fresh," which sounds great, but I do wonder what that actually means when you're in the middle of Iowa, miles from any ocean. Is it flown in daily? Fresh-frozen and thawed? Just something to consider, especially for a place that leans heavily on seafood dishes. This review is for "The Den" in the basement of the St. Burch Tavern. I'll keep this short and to the point - we were on track for a five-star review. The cocktails were great, the posted prices were reasonable, and the service good. My last drink of the evening was a Lagavulin 16, which generally costs $80-$100 a bottle retail (bars should pay less through distributors). For that single drink, The Den charged an exorbitant $35. I'd go back, but I'd only buy drinks with posted prices - the off-menu prices are absurd and frankly a rip-off. read more

The host was so welcoming and recommended the breakfast burrito subbing the side for potatoes. It was an excellent choice. From a quick glance of the area, I noticed it was very laid back atmosphere. There were a lot of great options for dinner, but I decided to go with the oysters since it was a happy hour special. I tried three different oysters - the Rappahannock from Virginia, the Big Rock from Massachusetts, and the Fanny Bay from British Columbia. Each one was unique and had its own special flavor. To start, the hostesses were incredible. I called day of to make a 12 person reservation and they were super accommodating and worked to make sure we could all sit together at our requested time. All of our food came out together, which is a great feat for a 12 top. The service was phenomenal, everything was correct and coursed out. We had a reservation and everything from beginning to end was executed very well. The group split a few apps; the cheddar biscuits and cheese curds. Both were delicious and bite-sized. Entrees ranged from soups & macs from the Pick 2 menu, to burgers and salads. I had the mushroom melt with kettle chips and it was delicious. Prices are very reasonable. St. Burch is conveniently located in downtown Iowa City. An easy walk if you work on campus. I definitely plan to return to checkout the drink menu; they have a nice selection of cocktails to choose from. Fun decor and outdoor dining, too! read more

The inside of the restaurant is beautiful; it has interesting lights and the booths look very cozy. The service was pretty fast, which is good because it was packed in there and we were in a hurry. I got the mushroom melt and was pleasantly surprised by the amount of flavor that was packed into such a small sandwich. Seriously--if you're going to go here and you're vegetarian, PLEASE get this sandwich. It will change your life like it did mine. Perfect balance of saltiness, sweetness, and everything in between. The truffle aioli is perfect. This is a crave-worthy sandwich. The green goddess salad, however, was okay. One note. it needed some acid. The original breakfast was mediocre according to my brother who got it. He said the eggs were rubbery, which is a downside. The shrimp and grits were delicious. The sauce on it was rich but it had a nice balance of acidity. The shrimp looks like it would be overcooked, but it was perfect. The prime rib sandwich was one note, with only subtle hints of horseradish. It was lacking acid and needed something else to balance out the richness. Bottom line: If you're going to go here, then opt for the mushroom sandwich or grits instead of the breakfast or the prime rib sandwich.
