An elderly small Hispanic woman went in after dialysis next door to purchase a water and snack after her treatment. She was on the phone with her transportation as it was 105 degrees outside and she was feeling weak. The male at the register seemed agitated and yelled at her to get out. Confused, the woman asked why knowing she wasn't doing anything wrong, and he stated, and I quote "I have to go to the bathroom and don't have time for you to be on your phone in the store". The poor woman left in shame. Was this racism? I am not sure. Was this poor behavior and heartless? Absolutely. Even the choice of words. How about "Ma'am, may I help you with something? I have to utilize the restroom but want to take care of you first" would have changed the context to a normal interaction. My question to all of you is: Would the situation have been the same if it was a male? Perhaps same ethnicity? In a healthy state? I doubt it. He saw the opportunity to be rude to a poor unhealthy elderly woman-and if this doesn't speak on his character, I don't know what does. Extremely disappointed.
