Matthew's is now a Hillsborough institution. We had previously visited them in their old location but were recently in town for the town's Last Friday Art Walk. It was about 15 minutes until closing time and the shelves of confectioneries were almost empty but there were still patrons inside. We purchased four separate pieces to take home with us and we rationed them and enjoyed them over the next few days. They also offer coffee and hot cocoa. The second part of my adventure was visiting this spot. My friend surprised me for my birthday month and brought me some things to try. Because I loved it so much, they brought me here to check it out in person. It's a cute shop with a plethora of options. I will warn you, this is in the downtown area and I went during Mother's Day weekend. When we arrived he was pretty cleaned out but since I've had some of the chocolates already, I really wanted to try the pie pops. I opted for Key Lime. It's literally key lime ice cream with meringue and a graham cracker crust dipped in chocolate. This hit the spot on a warm day. If you're in downtown Hillsborough, check him out as there are a variety of options from gelato, sorbet, pie pops, drinks, and chocolates. Strolling the historic streets of Hillsborough, my daughter and I walked by Matthew's Chocolates (September 9, 2017). The various chocolate delights lured us in. With so many options to choose from, it was hard to narrow down our selections. I came here on a whim after craving dessert and realizing that Matthew's was nearby. What a great idea! The location is right downtown, so it can get busy and crowded. There wasn't as much of a truffle selection as I would have liked, BUT the truffles are delicious. I got a box of 9 and ate all of them within 2 days. There are other delicious chocolates and gelato as well. I thought the gelato was great, and the perfect thing on a hot July night. I recommend the fruit truffles (cherry and lemon were amazing), as well as the gelato. The gift boxes make excellent gifts and are beautifully packaged. Our family was really excited about checking out this shop. The chocolates looked delicious and inviting and the environment seemed intimate and inviting. However, the gentleman who was working there was definitely unfriendly and when my son asked if he could sample one of the ice creams, his expression was very pained and sullen. This place is a Hillsborough gem. After a meal on Churton Street, we are always drawn to Matthew's for a gelato, or a cup of hot choca depending on our whim and the weather. For anyone with a sweet tooth, this place is a must. One look at the display cases is enough to inspire Homer Simpson-style drooling. Barks, truffles, and other blissful bites come in different shapes, colors, and chocolates dark and milk and white. All are homemade, and those sampled have tasted every bit as good as they looked. The clusters, for instance, have a good nut-to-chocolate ratio while spicier offerings pair ginger and Asian seasonings to bring a little heat to the sweet. Such is the quality that it absolutely justifies what seems at first to be overly ambitious pricing. You may balk at spending $2 to $3 for something that disappears in two bites, but when said bites are through, you'll be glad that you did so. If Matthew's Chocolates has one Achilles' heel, it isn't the layout (the brightly marked chalkboards are easy to read) or the staff (quirky and typically friendly if occasionally harried) but rather the establishment's own success. This isn't a big space, and when it fills, lines will form, your view of the goods will be obstructed or blocked, and your patience may wear thin. Remind yourself that the chocolate is worth the wait, and you'll appreciate it even more when that wait is through. read more

I came to NC to visit a boyfriend who at that time of the day was at baseball pre-game practice.... So i took my white ford focus rental car and started driving... And guess what. It started to rain like a mthrfckr and i wanted to stop and smoke. So. there i was...in Hillsborough... Quaint little downtown area with some artsy boutiques. Went to one store and they suggested that i walk two stores down and buy myself a treat. Who in their right mind will say No to Chocolates during an out of state vacation? Definitely not Moi. Okay. I ended up buying $29 worth of goodies which i brought back home to California. The smoothest homemade milk chocolate bar I've ever had. The white chocolate chips that were supposedly for baking cookies...were sooo good, my family snacked on them like potato chips. The chocolate dipped home-made marshmallows are soooo gooooood. I like to get homemade marshmallows with my hot chocolate. I always take out one with my fingers and eat it right away, a little confection dipped in choco. This is the best way to do it. Matthew's is what a designer confectionery chocolate shop should be. A rare find in this neck of the woods, or anywhere, really. Incredible hot choco selection, perfect for this chilly time of year, but modifiable for those warmer months by adding a splash of their gelato. Heaven-sent sinful. The chocolate is excellent, and the choices are often pretty creative. My latest favorite (for winter) is the hot chocolate with homemade marshmellows, with peppermint flavoring added. We often visit Mathew's after a boisterous supper at the Wooden Nickel next door, so this place is a nice transition as we head toward home. I was excited to try this place because it looked like it had good reviews. But I'm sorry to say that the quality of the desserts were nothing exceptional. I would never recommend this place, especially considering the owner appropriates other countries that he has never visited nor has any connection to, simply for profit. For example, he named a bark called "Kerala Krunch" because it has toasted coconut in it and the owner believes Kerala, India is the "coconut paradise". While that may be true, he mentioned that he has been pronouncing Kerala incorrectly for years and only very recently started pronouncing the name correctly after hearing about the Covid-19 crisis happening in India right now. As an Indian who's family is from Kerala, I'm offended and ashamed that someone wants to profit and appropriate my culture without having ANY basic knowledge of the region. I have nothing against sharing cultural experiences and appreciating other cultures. But this kind of experience for such low quality product wasn't worth that level of disregard and disrespect he has for my culture. read more

I have been enjoying Matthews's Chocolates for years. They are, quite simply, the best anywhere. Truffles look like pieces of fine art, with intricate details; truly as beautiful to look at as they are delicious to eat. Flavor varieties change weekly, but you can always count on unique flavors, such as florals like ylang-ylang or lemon verbena, spicy options like the Mexican mendiant or inferno truffle, and classics like hot cocoa or creme brûlée. There is controversy about a Facebook post Matthew made regarding a demonstration happening outside his shop. Many have assumed his post was to incite violence. His post was, in fact, not directly aimed at the conservative demonstrators outside, but more a vent of frustration at the inequity he faces as a small business owner downtown. Controversial demonstrations can occur in the streets regularly, as is their right, without any permit needed; however, small business owners (and other downtown businesses, not solely Matthews's) must adhere to strict regulations for their business signage in front of their own paid-for places of business. Although Matthew's choice to publicly post such a controversial message may not have been a wise one, it in no way detracts from how hard he works to create delicious chocolate. The debate over the rebel flag itself is not relevant to the quality of Matthew's Chocolates as a business. read more

The owner is charming and shares his stories about his creations. I feel like a little kid each time I enter the shop. The smells and warmth of the room is intoxicating. My only complaint is that it is in a small location. I always feel rushed or hurried along to leave due to limited space. Don't leave with out trying a few of the items under the case. They need to have a sampler package or discount for those of us who appreciate the flavors and craftsmanship. If you just like chocolate, go for the bars on the wall or nonpareils. Hands down the best chocolatier I've ever been to. Matt sources his chocolate from one of the European chocolate mecca's. Either Swiss or Belgian can't remember exactly but man what a difference it makes. I love chocolate and often find myself disappointed by chocolate shops that don't do it justice. This chocolate shop is reason enough to visit Hillsborough. It is filled with locally made truffles, chocolate bark, bars, pieces, gelato, desserts and both hot and cold drinks. I purchased homemade marshmallows covered in chocolate (delicious!) and an iced coffee with an ice cube made of coffee - genius! They have a few tables both inside and out. Service is very friendly. Anytime that I make a trip to Hillsborough, I make a point of stopping by this chocolate shop. I have tried all of the different hot chocolates, some of the gelato flavors and one or two of the truffles. Thus far, I have enjoyed them all. My favorite though is actually the fiery aztec hot chocolate (not overly spicy but it does have some heat to it), and I particularly enjoy getting the hot chocolate floats (though I do wish they put more ice cream in them). The staff has always been friendly and make sure that you are served relatively quickly. Normally there is only one or two people manning the counter so if there is a line, he or shee may take a little while. There is not much by way of parking unless you go to a garage a couple of blocks away by the boardwalk. The shop itself is small with little seating and few tables, but there is some fun decor on the walls. The display cases are always fun to look at and all of the chocolates look awesome ... almost too good to eat ... almost. read more

If you're looking for unique chocolate, look no further! I hadn't been here in awhile, and visited last weekend after noticing they had expanded the shop. There's now room to sit and relax, and when we were there on Saturday they had someone playing some tunes on her guitar. I love the fact that this chocolate is made locally, right down the street. You can see how much love & care goes into making the dainty little morsels. We tried the homemade marshmallows dipped in dark chocolate & toasted pecans ... and let me tell you, they were to die for. There were so many choices, I really would have liked to have one of each!
