The campsites at this campground were extremely small. And clearly not well kept with garbage lying…read morein the surrounding areas. We were literally a tissue toss from our neighbors. Furthermore, our site had an uneven and rotten picnic table, and the fire-pit was nearly full with ash and sand which I had to clean out. It was also disappointing to encounter a staff member, specifically an older, larger Hispanic woman, who had an issue with authority. At one point during our stay, I returned to the site after my baby had been throwing up to grab some things for his stomach. I was driving around a corner at approximately 10 miles per hour (yes, I know, 5 mph over the posted speed limit), when this staff member came flying around the corner in the middle of the road, causing her to swerve and nearly hit me, with my child in the car. Rather than accepting that we were both going a little too fast, she threatened to kick me off the grounds and chewed me out for speeding while she herself was disregarding their own rules. Overall, paying $43 a night during the slow season, with no complementary services and having to clean up the site before we could even set up, made the experience very disappointing. I think paying the extra $5 for a nearby campground that offers firewood, kind staff, and a clean, well-kept site would be much more worth it. 2 stars for at least having a nice bathroom. Summary of frustration: The cramped site layout, poor maintenance, and staff's poor handling of a stressful situation made the experience feel far below expectations, especially for the price. The lack of amenities and cleanliness only added to the frustration.

Update: check out two trails. Monument RidgeTrail is the easiest and very rewarding during late…read morewinter and early spring because of all the wildflowers. The trailhead is at Chowchilla Recreation Area close to bathroom at boat ramp. Lakeview Trail: two trailheads. One is at group camping. The other (free entrance) is at Raymond Bridge outside the town of Raymond.) This trail skirts the lake and river. (I added all 3 trailheads to Google Maps, along with reviews.) The lake and the terrain is beautiful this time of year (3.18.17) with temps in the mid 70s, wildflowers in full bloom, and the hillsides a glorious emerald green. We came for a short day trip but checked out several places for future reference. The Monument Ridge Trail, adjacent to one of the main boat launches was an easy 2.25 miles one-way (4.5 miles total but you can continue or turn around whenever you want). Besides an extraordinary amount of wildflowers, we saw 2 wild turkeys, one falcon, several hawks, numerous vultures, and one eagle (yes, we totally lucked up seeing the eagle)! We later drove around and scoped out all of the campgrounds for future reference, especially those with trees or views. At the group camping area, there is 4-mile Lakeview hike that takes you to Raymond Bridge. Of course, it would be an 8-mile roundtrip hike if you went there and back. I plan on checking it out really soon. High props to the overlook area. This time of year, the views are awesome, as is the very colorful lichen on the rocks. There is also a tiny visitor center with very clean bathrooms. For those of you who want to see the Memorial Ridge Trail hike, I am posting our satellite view, as well as numerous pics. Enjoyable day. Lots of people fishing and in boats on this Saturday morning.

The kitchen was well-equipped with pots, pans, dishes, utensils, etc. The outdoor bbq has seen better days, but we were still able to use it without all the coals falling through. There's a playground, basketball and volleyball court, as well as a game room that the kids and teens got to enjoy. Beautiful location, right on the lake and within 45 minutes to the south entrance of Yosemite National Park. We had a great time and would come back again.

It was nice to sit and enjoy putting our feet in the pool and even appreciated the simple things-- vending machines to stay put and shopping close by as well. Right off highway 99 so makes a super easy stay while traveling. People reside there as well and as overnighters we appreciated spaces for us and the friendliness. Nice walk along the fire roads, but a bit long for the reward. By the time we reached the Shadow of the Giants National Recreational Trail the kid was bored. The recreational trail is hard to following with deep snow, and there's no real indication as to what you're going to see, except for tall trees of course. There's an outhouse bathroom a the beginning of the scenic loop, and I think I saw a picnic table. This would have been a lot more fun if we'd been able to drive to the scenic loop.

I highly recommend driving either a pickup truck or SUV four wheel drive just to be on the safe side. But as a reminder, the road is very narrow, barely one car fits. I'd be nervous if there were cars coming from the other side but luckily we had no on coming traffic today. The stream and the waterfalls at Big Ed trail is really beautiful and just the whole area is peaceful and smells like pine trees and relaxing. There are several trails you can take like Chimney Tree Trail , Bull Buck Trail , etc... there's a campground by the stream also. Bull Buck tree is impressive, it's 2,700 years old and it's huge !!!! It's only a short 1/4 mile hike from the campground so it's worth seeing. Unfortunately after the 2017 fire in the area , the shadow of the giants trail is closed.
