Great Location & Warm Water, But Pack Light and Bring Bug Spray…read more Well, it's time for my family's annual camping trip! This year we wanted to check out Bass Lake, CA. There are several spots around the lake, but since we were booking through Recreation.gov, we landed on Spring Cove. I always try to book campsites close to the water, and on paper, this campground looked perfect. The Good Prime Lake Access: The location is super close to the water. You just have to cross the main road, walk down a little hill, and there you are! We selected sites nearest the road to ensure easy access to the lake, which is our main source of entertainment. The kids absolutely loved it. The water was warm enough to swim for hours, but cool enough to be refreshing in the summer heat. Bonus Perks: We loved that our parking permit came with a 15% discount for boat rentals at Miller's Landing Resort (just about a mile down the road). We used it to book a half-day boat rental, and it was easily one of the highlights of the trip! Awesome Camp Host: Shout out to Patrick for being incredibly cool and helpful. The Not-So-Good The Bathroom Situation: The flushing toilets were shut down, meaning we had to use porta-potties. Yuck! I am not a fan and found it pretty stressful. Thankfully, Miller's Landing was close enough to "take care of business" when needed. Yes, I'm weird, but I just can't with the porta-potties. Tiny Sites: The sites themselves are small. We are used to the larger, less crowded campgrounds up north at higher elevations, so we had to seriously adjust our layout for our party's three campsites and varying tent sizes. When the website says "small tent," they really mean small tent. Don't try bringing a mansion tent here unless you want to be moving picnic benches around just to make it fit. Mosquitoes: There were a lot of them. Be sure to pack plenty of bug repellent options. Despite the tight squeeze and the bathroom bummer, it was a great trip. I think we might have just found our new annual spot!

Some gorgeous homes am an be rented if you wish, or there are plenty of campgrounds. The lake is not huge... But, you. An find some quiet coves here and there. Just like most places, it can get crowded on the weekends. Lots of beaches, just make sure you are parking legally. Don't miss the FORKS BURGERS! Or, their club sandwich. Delish! I've been camping for more than 25 years, whether it be dispersed with limited facilities or sites…read morethat have full on electrical outlets and close to a body of water (like Camp Edison). Yet majority of the time, I have been lucky to get a reservation here. To make a reservation, you will need to go on Camplife.com and select Camp Edison as your location. Reservations open up 6 months prior to your desired camping dates. So if you want to camp around June, you will need to get on the reservation site around December and compete with others in the reservation process. Reserving for May-July are the worst; similar to reserving at Yosemite National Park. It can be frustrating as you will be assigned a random number in the queue at 8am on the dot; so make sure you're logged in at least 15 minutes prior just in case you encounter connection issues. You can be either #1 or #1000; it just depends on how many are on the site at that given time. You also have a time limit to make your reservation or risk to having it swooped by another camper if you fail to do so. I recommend making your reservation on a desktop and not on mobile as you might have issues with cell signal. As far as the experience goes, I just love camping here. Sites are adequately spaced but other "Loops" may be a bit spacier. Most sites are RV/Trailer accomodating. Electric meters for eac site, communal water stations, hot showers (shower card needed) and flushing toilets. They also have a Camp Store near the Check In Booth. There are also vendors that drive around that sell firewood. You can also rent boats at the Shaver Lake Marina, and if fully booked, you can try your luck at the nearby Sierra Marina. Walking distance to Shaver Lake and a few mins drive to the Shaver Lake town. I highly recommend this campgrund if you're lucky to snag a spot online. Also, you can pay for "Day Use" only - which basically is equivalent to a Day Pass. Good luck!

Just got back from a 2 night stay at Dorabelle campground and feel compelled to write a review…read morebased on the cleanliness of the bathrooms, Lol! The camp hosts take great pride in keeping the place clean, we saw someone cleaning the bathrooms multiple times a day. I'm telling you, you would never guess that these are non-flushing restrooms. They were immaculate. We stayed at spot #60, which is in the lower part of the loop and was a very short, easy walk, to the lake. The site was perfect, not too close to other sites so there was some privacy, and only one site away from the restrooms. Fair warning though, you do have to take some steps down from the parking spot to the actual site, so if you have a lot of stuff to carry, just be aware that you will need to travel down about 5-6 steps. The site itself has decent shade, the picnic table and fire pit are in great condition and there is a very nice, clean, open and perfectly flat spot to put your tent between two trees. If you forget something, "town" is just outside of the campground entrance, within a few minutes you have access to restaurants, and other stores. Somehow though, you feel off-grid, even though you are so close to town. We had full cell phone service, even though we chose to stay off our phones, if you needed to use them you totally could. Overall, I highly recommend this campground and we really enjoyed our stay

We will definitely return! I have to give a shoutout to the camp host Jamie! She is such a sweetheart and beautiful soul. She made the stay feel extra homey. It was a bit cold at night lowest 42 I believe and highs were 64 degrees. During day it was nice and warm with the sun shining. Ensure to bring lots of warm clothes to bundle up in the evening and be kind to the campground. Ensure to pack anything that was packed in to keep the area clean. Oh and be aware, you can hear wolves and coyotes throughout your stay. Ensure to keep all food put in a tote safely and in the provided camp storage so the bears are not attracted to your campsite. Keep a close eye on the little ones at all times!

We stayed in back-in, FHU site 42 which is in the only row of 50 Amp sites, which are near the entrance. The site was completely level! The electric, water and sewer connections worked as expected and were well placed. There is absolutely NO WiFi. AT&T, Verizon and TMobile cellular had full bars throughout the park. Cable is available, but all I could get was Telemundo. The sites were roomy enough. The 30amp FHU sites farther inside the park appeared roomier though. They also back up to the rivers edge. The Fresno River runs along the length of the park and at this time of year, there are multiple waterfalls that create very relaxing white noise. The campground was very quiet and easy to relax in. The office is well stocked with all the RV essentials and Katie the manager, was very helpful and friendly. The maintenance guy was super helpful and answered all my questions throughout the day. There is some room for the kids to ride bikes and there are two rarely used horseshoe pits. The park is dated and needs some TLC, but it is in Oakhurst, on the Fresno River, and near the southern entrance to Yosemite. The rustic feel is very nice. I would stay again when in the area.

My husband and I made a recent trip to Lake Huntington and stayed at Catavee Campground at Campsite…read more#19 which was opening weekend (Memorial Day wknd end of May). We were mostly snowed in as the snowmelt had not completely gone away from winter but the picnic table, fire pit and most of an area for our tent were clear. And just enough of our driveway for our vehicle to fit. Then one of the park folks camp with a snowplow came to clear the remaining driveway the second morning we were there which was great. This site was incredible. The best features are that it is wide, so it is great for groups I would think. Multiple landings for tents available. We loved that it was shaded and bumped up against the stream/brook which vented out to peekaboo views of the lake. Campsite #21 right next door had direct views of the lake but also lent to more road traffic. Our site was very quiet. Mostly level ground. Definitely call ahead to check the weather and campsite status. We might not have gone had we known there was so much snow on the ground, but we made the best of it. Our camp host Bob was great and lent us a shovel the first night. Several park folks checked on us throughout the wknd. The bathrooms were also great. Flushable toilets. Very clean and well kept with tissue stocked throughout the weekend. My recommendations would be to bring a pop up solar shower since your only option in this area otherwise is the RV site in town for $5 per person which is completely disgusting. 6in of standing water with freezing cold water. Not worth it. Maybe also bring your own wash basins or something for dishwashing as there are no wash sinks nearby. Only a spicket at site #19 where you should not wash your dishes as it can clog the drain and attract bears and other critters. We did not see or hear any wildlife the entire time we were there. We brought our 22lb corgi daschund dog/love of our life and felt comfortable the whole time with her on a tie down stake. Definitely will go back and recommend this site to others!!

This past…read moreweekend my wife and I along with several family members of mine, booked a last minute camping trip to Catavee! We were all so happy with the experience. Here are a few things worth mentioning... #1: Sites 13 & 24 are two of the BEST sites at this small campground. If you are going with a group, these are the 2 you want to go for. 24 is nicer than 13 but each of these are on the same loop but back up to each other. As the pictures below show (hoping I can upload the ones we have) you are surrounded by lush forestry throughout your campsite. Luckily, you still feel like you can breathe even with the many trees. These two sites are also close enough to the water spout and the CLEAN restrooms! A small parking lot is also near these two sites as well. Keep in mind that this campground is very small, so really you are close enough to the ONE restroom facility at the camp no matter where you stay. #2: There are no showers in the Huntington Lake area. Luckily for us, a family member brought up a trailer but no one really worried about showering since we were only camping a few days. #3: During the weekdays, you will probably be the ONLY ones at this campsite. This was a huge bonus. During the weekend, just about every site was full which was totally fine because you are in good distance for proper privacy from other campsites. We stayed from Sat-Tues and the last couple days were very nice yet eerie as we were the only ones in the entire campground. Definitely gave us the seclusion and mountain experience we were hoping for! Very nice peaceful break! #4: The Lake is very close to camp. (Walking distance!) But, There are about 5-10 other campgrounds in the area. Keep this in mind when you are deciding. Best thing to do is call the campground registration office! They are very very helpful! They will help you make your selection on the campground that will be best for you. One other campsite that was literally sitting on the lake that we walked through was Deer Creek, and College Campground. If we go back, which we WILL, we will probably try one of these two campgrounds even though Catavee was perfect for us. #5: Rancheria Falls-probably one of the highlights of our trip. We drove our Chevy Tahoe all the way up the dirt road (don't worry, its bumpy but even small cars can make it up), parked, and headed onto the hike. This is a beautiful and very EASY hike to do with the whole family! We had our 3 year old son, and 13 month old daughter who was worn on the back and did it with no problem. BE ADVISED-it gets cliffy as you make your way to the falls. We did not let go of our son and kept him on the hillside of the trail. We hear of too many accidents when families go on hikes, so be very careful. Also-perfect trail to pack a lunch and eat somewhere on the way. There were only a few others doing the hike that we happened to walk past. It is beautiful and was definitely a highlight for us! It was 1 hour total round trip tops. #6: There are no bears that come through the campsites in the Huntington Lake area. This was very important for being my wife's first camping trip. She slept well at night! :)

The bear lockers were your typical ones that could fit a large ice chest and possibly a second smaller one. Our site was close to the bathrooms that were flushable. They were so clean. I witnessed the camp hosts clean them twice a day the whole weekend we were there. I didn't see any showers but I also didn't look for any. The sites are a little close to each other. If your neighbors are up all night you may hear them. The lake is really close. We had good luck catching some trout during our stay.

After staying for nine days we found out that you had to become an escapee's member and the cost was $49. To join for one year. The park refunded this in a free night credit. While staying here we met the park manager and took a tour after finding out they are a 55+ members park. After reviewing the park information and seeing what a beautiful park this was we decided to make this our home base. We travel to many places after retirement but found that we needed a place to hang out hat for Dr. appointments, and staying connected with our family in the Central Valley. We bought in and picked our site. The unique nature of living here is that the members here all volunteer to help keep cost down to run the park. This gave us a sense of ownership and community. We volunteer 3 days per week for approximately 4 hours per day and join in on special events to help set up or organize events that are for the members. It's not like having a job but more like going to hang out with folks that have the same interests. There is constantly an event going on weather you like to play cards, pool, dominoes, darts, working out , or outdoor activities like pickle ball or mini golf the fun is endless. This amazing place has beautiful views of the Sierra foothills and there's even a casino across the mountain. Becoming a member here has given us a place to call home in between our travels and our site remains ours when we're in the park. If you're thinking of becoming a full timer or if you're looking for a great place to glamp, this is the place!
