I consider Coffee & Tea Ltd to be part of my family as I first started ordering from them in 1975. I was in college at IU, Bloomington IN. With working two jobs and studying, coffee became my addiction. Coffee & Tea is the only online store that I have ordered from because I believe the quality, price, friendship, and service has been amazing. This past Christmas, I ordered coffee as gifts on December 7th. On December 10th, I reviewed the package tracking and the package had not yet left the building. On December 15th, I called and since no one answered, I left a message. No one returned my call. Three (3) days later I called again, the same scenario. I submitted an inquiry over the website, again, nothing . I kept reaching out, offering to pay for overnight delivery to get the package before the holidays. I was almost begging for someone to contact me. As a loyal customer, I truly felt betrayed. I received my order on January 5th., 2025, almost a month later. The order wasn't correct, a receipt inside was for the incorrect amount, and the charge was via PayPal. The order placed had already been charged to my bank. The only name on the receipt was Tyler. Wow! Did I not deserve to know, what the world happened for a month, and the reason after numerous contacts, no one contacted me? I was very disheartened! I wonder if Jimmie, the founder even knew that I was calling and messaging online? I placed another order the 1st part of February, and thankfully, Jim who is employed there helped me. He had no idea that I had experienced this and shared his sincere apologies. Jim has not only been kind, caring, and great to offer suggestions, and share stories about the coffee's origin, he deeply cares about the customer. I just don't believe "Jimmie," the owner had any idea what I went through. If anything, I hope this review has brought light on how one feels when they ignored. I love this place. My wife grew up in MPLS and we make it a point to visit C&T on every trip home. It's a dying breed, a specialty shop that has somehow managed to survive the corporate takeover of, well, just about everything. The vibe is a little Steam Punk, a little Diagon Alley, a little mad scientist. Most importantly, the proprietor is a wizened soul singularly devoted to his craft. Been ordering my beans from here for several years. Used to come in but decided mail was the way to go. Well, my latest order was mia so I decided to drive over today. I'm not sure what is going on over there but the place has become a disgusting pit. Not only was there clutter and inventory scattered throughout, but there was a healthy patina of dirt and dust absolutely everywhere. Really sad to see. read more

I first stopped by this shop in the late 70's when renting a duplex in Linden Hills. Back then, I purchased a Gaggia Espresso maker from a much younger Jim Cone. I was introduced to a world of coffee I hadn't known existed prior to meeting Jim. It's been a fulfilling journey. Over the years, the shop has changed little. It's funky, eccentric, a bit ramshackle, permeated with the enticing aromas emanating from the on-site roaster and filled with jars of exotic, expertly processed beans (and quality teas). This is not a Charbucks or hipster hangout. You can buy a cup of coffee but the focus is on the sale of beans, ground or whole. I've had many conversations with Jim and other staff. I have never experienced or witnessed rude or condescending behavior. True, I imagine Jim can be gruff and likely does not suffer fools gladly. If you walk in with an attitude you'll may be rebuffed. But in my experience, if you are curious, share even a bit of his passion for all things coffee and have some time to explore Jim is a delightful and incredibly informed guide. LOVE the custom cup...pick your bean, they grind it and brew you a cup on the spot. Freshest cup in town by far. Jim, the owner, roasts coffee in a roaster that pre-dates WWI...yes, almost 100 years old. He is a classic. Try his 5 Star French roast which I have been having every morning for a month...awesome. If you adamantly believe dark roast is coffee murder, this place isn't for you. Also this isn't a sit down cafe with kid toys in the corner. If you want a mental picture, just think of the organizational aesthetic, ancient curiosities and good-hearted cantankerous shopkeeper from bookstore in The NeverEnding Story. This place is jam packed with Bialetti's, and drawers of mini roasts and teas, any of which the keeper will brew for you. Check out the awesome brass (?) espresso machine that takes up the entire back wall, or the double duty grinder that looks like it's on its last legs but probably has worked like a charm since 1985. You'll swear you found The Auryn! Then for good measure buy a pound or two to take home and he'll grind it to your particular spec. Did I mention old-fashioned packaged Moon Pies? If on the other hand you want a place where the beans are roasted sustainably *and* intellectually, or where you can get a good breakfast burrito with your friend while the kids color, there's two or three of those down the street, too. If you have not been here and you love coffee and tea, you must go. The selection is amazing. Ranging in price from $10/lb to $420/lb. When I walked in there was an old man reading a newspaper roasting coffee in an ancient looking roaster. There are well over 50 varieties of coffee and over 50 varieties of tea. The person behind the counter is helpful, and will pull out different varieties of beans for you to smell if you ask. This morning I made the best cup of coffee ever. The shop is dog friendly so if you are dropping by stop in with your pet and grab a cup. UPDATE I was just there and they now have Kopi Luwak for $420/lb(or $10/8 oz cup). It was amazing coffee. Been stopping by here for a few months for whole bean coffee. My favorite by far is the espresso de noche. If you are a fan of strong coffee, I would highly recommend these beans to wake you up in the morning! They smell amazing in the grinder and you will feel prepared for the day 20 minutes after the coffee has brewed. The staff are friendly and some are more open to talking than others. This place provides the coffee beans for surly's coffee bender and sometimes they are hard at work getting the orders ready. We even got to try samples of it one night, which was fun! If i could just walk by Coffee and Tea every day while they are roasting their coffee I would be a happy person. The smell is just...... AMAZING..... This is by far the best coffee shop in town. They are extremely happy with helping you find the best beans for you. I started shopping here since I was to lazy to go to Lunds to get some new coffee beans and it was the best laziness that I have had. First off, for those who bash C&T Ltd....it makes it better for those who know the difference! Perhaps you should go back to your corporate coffee shops and stroke their tasteless egos. Being that everyone is a coffee expert these days, don't be fooled by the negative comments here. Secondly, knocking the cleanliness of the Linden Hills shop is not needed. No one is asking for you to rent a room or perform surgery there. It's a coffee shop people!! They do their business out of that location with limited space!! You would be doing the same, if you were the proprietor of the establishment. Get over it!! Thirdly, not every shop is going to want you to pull out your phone and snap pictures to post wherever you want to. Perhaps they would like to keep some sort of anonymity from those who don't know what real coffee is..? Please honor their wishes!! Additionally, not every store, shop, or place of business is going to praise you for being such a fantastic human being when you walk in. That's not why you should be there!!! I have been going there for many years and have never had "my feelings hurt" by anyone there. Toughen up, get your beans and leave...this isn't some college "hangout" where you can linger. Space is limited and there are other real people who would like to do business too!! No one there is going to tell you "how cute your hair is" or "how they love your glasses"...it's a specialty store that serves coffee and beans...not Abercrombie & Fitch. Finally, I assume all of the experts who say the beans are burnt, or oily are just that...experts. Nevertheless, perhaps you should open your own shop and show them how it's done??? The Twin cities has some fantastic roasters and Coffee & Tea Ltd. is perhaps the best among them. The folks here know their coffee. Price is very reasonable and the product is far superior to the surrounding shops. Only concern is a lack of indoor seating. But in the summer there is nothing nicer on a Saturday morning than coffee on the bench outside talking with passers-by. And yes, the kopi luwak is really as amazing as they say and worth $10/cup. I was introduced to this place from my friend and neighbor, and have gotten my beans from nowhere else ever since. Note, I wouldn't call this a coffee shop -- this is where you get your beans, not hang out and sip an espresso. They will make a shot, but it's much more setup for a pound of beans. Easily some of the best coffee in the city. With a roaster with this much experience it is no surprise. The coffee selection is amazing and the prices are some of the best in town. I think the tea often gets overlooked, but is great as well. They have a many choices for a nice cup. Try the special grade Lapsang Souchong - it is the best smoked tea I've ever had. This is the ultimate "little hole in the wall" coffee shop. I love the fact that you get to actually pick what kind of bean you want for the day. They make the coffee and grind the beans right in front of you. Not to mention, they roast their own beans too. Every time you go in there, it is an older man who does the work, I love it! He actually knows his shit too which makes for a really great experience. If you think you know anything about coffee at all... You probably still don't compare to the immense amount of knowledge this guy has. I wish I knew his name.. I love this place. The owner, who often is working here, is a great guy. I don't own a dog, but this place is super dog friendly. If you do own a dog, they will often have a treat ready for him or her. When I was there recently I did overhear a guy turn down the buffalo treat because his dog only eats Boar's Head ham or turkey. This is the best place to buy beans in the country. I have them ship me ground beans after choosing my favorite blend during a hometown visit, and they're always the absolute sweetest guys. And they make a great cup of coffee! And they love my dog (perhaps more than I do- what's in those beans?)! What's not to love about this place? Seriously, I order from them across the country. It's next to Tilia's and it's a cute place to stop by to have my friends try the kopi luwak coffee. Kopi Luwak is the most expensive coffee in the world! It's $420 a pound or $10 a cup. You even get to keep the ceramic cup after you drink the coffee. It's a little cramped and old school. The owner scolded at me when I took my phone out and said, "do not take pictures in my store!" He must've thought I was an undercover coffee agent. If only my life were that cool! ;) In reality I took my phone out to check into the location on yelp. The Kopi Luwak was good, not great. If only I could bottle the smell of those roasting beans.... Hands down, the best bean I've ever found. I guess I don't really think of it as a "coffee shop" that I'd go and sit down at... which is my answer to the complaints of limited seating. That being said - they do make a MEAN cup of coffee for you on the spot. Typically I just get my beans and make them at home. The owner is awesome, and was really helpful in giving me suggestions for brewing a better cup at home. He also treated the dog!! :) They have been getting my repeat business for years, as well as (unknowingly) supplying caffeinated christmas gifts for my family. read more

What a bunch of pretentious inflated A**HOLES! This little gem of a store has so much potential... It's small, it's hidden away, it's independent, they appear to roast all their own beans and take a lot of pride in their coffee and their craft... BUT... I have never been to a place where you're made to feel like you're imposing as a customer and that your notion of paying them money for what they're selling is offensive to them. Unbelievable. Know what you like before you go. If you are a fan of Vienna or French roast, this is your store. You will love the huge variety of dark, oily beans available to you. However, if you value terroir, the flavors imparted to coffee beans from the land they grow in, or process flavors, such as the deep berry notes beans get from being dry processed, you will be disappointed. I didn't see a roasted bean in the store that didn't have the personality burned entirely out of it. If you go, look for the oily sheen on the beans. If you see oil and smell campfire, you know that coffee has been roasted to death. Contrast that with a coffee from Peace, Stumptown, or Intelligentsia, and you'll quickly understand the difference. Every bean that goes through the beautiful old roaster in the window is taken into or past second crack, which means it's burnt. For a lot of people, this is the coffee they enjoy and prefer, and that is fine. Given the prices of the coffees, with many over $20 per pound, one could just as easily buy any heavily "roasted" coffee at one-third the price, because it will taste exactly the same. Freshness is irrelevant after the coffee bean is burnt. There is nothing left to preserve. I give three stars out of respect for the sense of tradition at the shop, for the gruff and cranky owner, for the variety, and for the fact that even though their coffee is not to my preference, it is appreciated and enjoyed by a lot of people who know what they like, and find it at Coffee and Tea, Ltd. read more

Summary: Great place to buy beans and get a drink to go. Not zacklee a place to sit down and catch up with anyone. Nice little bean place. Pretty good selection and knowledgeable staff. I chatted up the guy behind the counter who was very friendly and helpful. I went in for cappuccino only. It ain't built for that. But it was fine. Two kids (11-13) walked in & wanted to try a bean (because they never had munched a roasted bean before). It was provided to them kindly, if reluctantly. No ceramic cups there, so I ding a star for that and not being a sit-down oppty inside the place. It always tastes better in a mug vs cup, yeah? This place beats Starbucks any day. Moreover, the owner here is super friendly, down-to-earth, and brews each cup of coffee with such care -- He even gave me a 20 oz cup when I ordered a 16 oz Cappuccino Americana because he didn't want the whipped cream to get pressed up against the coffee cup lid. Where else can you find such service? Though, I must say, you'll pay for such quality. I found this place after lunch next door. I was originally very excited about the new prospect to feed my home espresso habit - local, fresh roasted, not pre-ground, no more shipping charges. And made on site! Unfortunately, what followed ended up being the last time I'll head in there - First off, you walk in to a great smelling place, which everyone loves. Except the reason it smells great is because they have so much coffee sitting there roasted. As in, a whole lot of it. More than a place like Spyhouse would go thru in a couple of days. Which means, unless I hit the worst point of the week, this coffee is being sold stale or a bunch is being thrown away. More on this later. Next, I see the (infamous) Kopi Luwak. Best in the world right? Anyone that follows up on this will note the animal cruelty aspect of this coffee. Due to the outrageous popularity, civets are now held in captivity and force fed beans. If that doesn't matter to you, feel free to have a cup. It's roughly on the same level of the chickens being force fed and the massive cattle feed lots in TX. That's a strike in my book. I ignored that point in hopes of a decent coffee, and there are a lot of options here. Unfortunately, this place is really expensive. Now for what I buy, $15/12 oz of Intelligentsia with shipping gets pricey but it's worth it. But this is local... shouldn't I be seeing some kind of savings? I'm starting to think that the unbelievable volume of roasted beans might be getting thrown away instead of sold. Maybe that means no stale coffee at least? I come up to the counter and ask for a medium roast, I don't like the overly burnt stuff. I get a small speech about how "bold" their coffee is and how their coffee is "bolder" than the others. Ruh-ro, I know this talk. It was indeed burnt. The beans (both kinds that I got) were dark dark dark and shiny. Shiny is actually bad in coffee. Take note - shiny hair good, shiny coffee bad. It means that the temperature was so hot that the oils are pushing OUT of the bean. I want my coffee oils in my cup, not burnt in the roaster. I am now confident that I'm not coming back here again. I rated it a 2 because I think the tea selection might be worth checking out. At least they don't roast those. By the way, I pulled a couple doubles at home with both coffees I got there. Not many neighborhoods can boast of a place like this; we're fortunate to have it. Finding good coffee via Yelp is an interesting art; there are places I pass by on the basis of five-star reviews, and visit on the basis on one-stars. C&T is the real deal. I confess that I have wondered how Jim manages to keep all that variety on hand, but so far I've never taken home a stale bean, so whatever he's doing seems to work. (Hey, I could ask him!) Remember those old neighborhood hardware stores, that had everything, and an owner who knew where it was? All gone now, replaced by the chains. The chai here is one of the best that I have had. I've had many opportunities to try chai teas and this one really through me for a loop. The most impressive thing about it was the fact that I did not use soy milk to enhance the chai flavor. That is what made me decide that this chai was the best that I had ever tasted. Unfortunately, the coffee my friend purchased was burnt and very bitter. You could not even smell any of the notes in the coffee, just burnt. I think it was due to the fact that the trainee was the person who made her coffee and the owner was the person who made my chai. I will definitely return for more chai teas! read more

I went here once with my girlfriend to buy espresso and the owner was the only person working. Everything seemed fine so when we ran out of coffee, she went back to get more. She called me afterwards, crying, and described how she was treated by one of the associates. I called them to discuss it further. I talked with the owner, who apologized, but proceeded to try to justify the way his employee was acting. He confirmed everything I was told by my girlfriend and seemed otherwise unfazed by the piss poor attitude and disrespect exhibited by his employee. There will always be competition that actually understands how customer service impacts the success of a company and shows graciousness, rather than condescension, to the people who support them; that's where we will be bringing our business. read more

First of all, it is now called Coffee and Tea, LTD. "Lee" apparently stopped roasting coffee to return to the corporate world - something he felt he was more suited for. If you love coffee you must check this place out. I had to try the kopi luwak coffee for $10 a cup when I was there and I must tell you that it was worth trying. I wouldn't get it again but man, what a cup. My only complaint is that it isn't a coffee shop at all. They sell coffee beans and tea but there's nowhere to sit inside. There ARE two tables outside but that's it. They will however, brew a cup of anything in there which is sweet. The guy working was very interesting to talk to. I will definitely return this coming weekend. Too many choices for a cup of coffee not to. Would have given it 5 stars if there were tables inside. read more

Ok. For people who don't know anything about coffee, this place isn't for you. It does however, offer the most extensive selection and best coffee beans in the city. Ask Surly why it uses coffee and tea's Finca Vista Hermosa for their coffee bender drink. For people giving this place a bad review for poor service, I know the owner and manager; if you are given an attitude, it's your own fault. You probably said or did something ridiculous like walk into a local business and start taking pictures without asking.
